Yes the playstyle of a DoT Affliction Mage. Much Summon much Egi. Your pets are a glorified DoT and the main draw for Garuda is the use of Contagion to extend your DoT's so you can cast your other weak shit and pop all your sissy AoE oGCD's.

Titan is only used in the overworld to draw some hate and kill thing before it kills you, Ifrit is mainly used for specific fights where it might be useful due to specific skills like a stun perhaps or just physical damage or in other cases where Ifrit is available but Garuda is not.

Ifrit in this case is the advanced pet. Garuda is a fire and forget all purpose pet with little to no depth involved. Especially now with no new pet skills for existing pets in HW and a new focus on the Summoner firing off oGCD's and it will continue come next expansion. I expect more nuanced trance skills.

First I want to mention this, don't use lore as a straw man excuse for game play design. That's not how it works.

Sadly we are still talking about the same issue we were discussing 3 years ago.... We won't get new Egi's because the current pet design is fundamentally flawed. The game is designed around three methods of DPS; single target, AoE, and DoT. CC in this game is strictly for PvP and tanking pet is for soloing unless they make changes. The player base falls into two different categories in pet job design; DoT and Nuker.

4.0 should add a new pet job, Ranger, that works for the player base that wants a nuker with pets. Then they should focus SMN design on DoT and pets design.

Well I can't remember if 1.0 had elemental weakness but recall the reason for this removal was they didn't want players to stack BLMs for fights like Primals. Regardless, FFXIV's SMN design lacks imagination.

I understand the issue of wanting to maintain balance, and with a great bit of reach, understand the limitations the lore put in place but to be honest, it's insulting to the actual job of Summoner to only be able to summon three egis. This actually goes against what this role has been about in Final Fantasy mainstay games and hell, even some characters who weren't summoners were able to summon more than FFXIV summoners. If you ask me, SE took a rather lazy way out of not giving summoners egis because they didn't want to spend the extra effort on balancing and coming up with new abilities for them. It's just stupid that FFXI summoners had at least six summons available to them AT LAUNCH and it's been over three years with FFXIV and summoners are still stuck with the same three. I couldn't care less for the glamours and probably won't even use them out of principle.

Exactly.. It feels like a lazy cop out, they even made it part of the SMN story so now its Cannon to the Lore for a game that barely feels like (if at all) embraces its lore and refects it in the game itself. For a job that has always had one of the highest aether potentials in the series to now be remembered at its lowest ever. Not even sure if the job can even be called SMN as this point lol I understand these guys work there butts off to make stuff like this. But when you make lazy design decisions, that laziness is refected into the game itself (espeically the Lore) and the player base can feel it as they play the game. And I do understand they wanna keep the game balanced, but balancing is preventing them from doing anything that might be really fun for the job (if not the game). As far as the Egi-Glamours go. There a joke, insult and lazy cop out design decision to SMN lovers through out the series. And as much as I would like to see them not get used, they most definitely will but still have the same abilities and effects because "Balancing" demands it.


So there's my 2 cents and will speak no more on this.

It's really still at it's core the Arcanist base class. Not much else needs to be said.

Perhaps they'll add some new ones to the cash shop ;)

^ Tear down ACN and make both jobs separate too.

The Egi itself just a useless nugget. SMN needs to be revamped from bottom up in some way to feel like an SMN imo.

Using lore to interfere and to limit gameplay is Gods awful and should never, EVER be used.

Ahk Morn I like more than the Egi I think... Like you suggested though, I'd have quite liked Summoner to effectively have a rotation that takes it through various Trances, Inferno Trance > Gale Trance > etc., it strikes me as a different enough form of summoning to work... It creates a real sense of "I'm doing this", which is perhaps something Summoner shouldn't have, given they've always just called upon powerful creatures, but it's nice regardless...

Either that, or give Summoner a fairly low cooldown form of Dissipation, that provides Swiftcast instead of Aetherflow, and split the pets cooldowns, even move some more skills onto them... So say, you summon Garuda-Egi, she does Tri-disaster, then you sacrifice her to bring out Ifrit-Egi, who does Fester... That kind of concept builds Summoner around summoning...

Instead, we're getting Egi-Glamours... IDK, I have hope for Egi-Glamours, but I shouldn't having seen the current Glamour system... I'd be OK with an off-hand item that dictates my summon, so I equip an Inferno-Focus, I summon Ifrit-Egi, even for Summon and Summon II. That almost strikes me as the truest form of summoning... Most games it was never about a rotation of summons, you found the most powerful option, and you stuck with that... I wouldn't be picking the most powerful Egi, I'd be picking the one I like the most, and arguably that's better... It still does nothing for Summoners gameplay being more DoT Mage than Summoner, but done right, the Egi-Glamour system can at least tingle my nostalgia for going out and earning summons, and picking them...

I hate the whole idea behind "egi-glamours", I find the whole concept of glamoring any skill/spell/summon/ability/action.. in general, undesirable to say the least. (If not handled with extreme care.) It really annoys me , the idea of having to take an extra step in my brain, instead of being able to immediately identify, in combat, at a glance, what is happening ... which is the door this opens up. All this, just to pander to some nostalgic fans, that just can't let it be. I currently kind of like the fact that If I see a Carbuncle, I know it isn't a Summoner.

As a long time fan of Summoner and the FF series in general. I am fine with the way Summoner is right now (Trance & Dots), I don't need to dress up my pet and I have other FF games if I want a more traditional Summoner experience.

I'd rather they take pets away and transfer the abilities all to the Summoner, in the form of stances/trances and Dissidia like type attacks etc... instead of "egi glamor"

On topic, I have no idea if they are going to add new egi in the future. With the way Summoner functions right now, I don't really see the point. Unless they take a dramatic shift in 4.0 with it. I really don't want them to force them in, just because people want variety or w/e though. I think the Dreadwyrm stuff, was a step in the right direction for Summoner, specifically for XIV. The raw power coming through the Summoner itself, is a much more appealing idea, than little pets that you barely have any interaction with.


This obviously, is all my personal opinion on it.

Ya, that's kind of the Dissidia type stuff I was talking about, not entirely, but the Ghost Image thing. I do think there is an opportunity to make Enkindle cooler, they could definitely make the Egi's transform / ghost image or whatever during that ability.

I'm actually surprised Spur and Rouse doesn't do some sort of physical pet change... since there is really not much visual feedback other than an Icon on your party list.

One thing that might address some concerns, is an idea I got from a certain cutscene in Final Coil: have a ghostly image of the primal briefly appear when certain Egi abilities are used (e.g. Enkindle). Something like like that already kinda happens when Dreadwyrm Trance is turned on, and would also tie in with the Ultima Weapon.

Playing a summoner, I'd have no problem with one of two possible outcomes.

1.) The Aion spiritmaster route. Basically have the summoner with two sets of abilities: caster damage (a.k.a. the standard rotation) and more enkindle-like direct pet commands. This way, the dot rotation makes sense since while you're letting those dots tick off, you can issue all those pet commands for extra damage. The only major downside to this approach is that among all of the things the game doesn't pull off very well, unfortunately pet UI and pet control are on that list.

OR (the better option....)

2.) The "invoker" route. Scrap the egi concept and replace it with a stance-based system where every primal has its own permanent trance that affects summoner spells in certain ways much like how the Aspect spells work for astrologian and perhaps even the summoner's stats. On top of that, summoners would have one "Summon" skill that would bring out the primal of their current trance for one signature attack a la Ultima Extreme (i.e. Earthen Trance "Summon" brings out Titan to do its Geocrush skill on a selected target area).

Overall, the short version for any idea on a pet job is relatively simple: go big or go home.

The whole Ark Morn is by far the closest thing we have in this game to the original Final Fantasy Summoner Job.

Summoner Job was not original a Pet Job in Final Fantasy but was a Job that "Summon" the Summons to perform their Ultimate attack as the Summoner's skills.

It wasn't a Job that dragged around their summons like a wiped slave but used their Summons as a actual attack ability.

Problem is they copied Warlock from WOW to make Summoner for this game. Instead of just being creative with it. Sorry to say in my honest opinion WOW did a better job.

At the moment, we got something like a DoT-mage with a small support of his pets. The main problem here is, that those pets arent that strong or even helpfull (like Titan). Better rework the whole job and focus on pets OR DoTs:

1. Focus on direct and DoT damage from the summoner itself. Use your summons only for burst damage and ultimate attacks (like Ark Morn from Bahamut or Arial Blast from Garuda). Gain aether during combat to summon those ultimate attacks.

2. Focus on your pets (like a real pet class). Your pets are doing the main damage, while the summoner itself must buff them, keep them alive and position them correctly. You are able to summon more than one egi, which means to control both of them. Losing your pet will make it much harder to re-summon them again (no swiftcast), so you have to keep an eye on your pets.

And btw: Please get rid off those egis! I want REAL summons!

Every pet-based class in mmorpgs usually had the common sense level of micromanagement like taking a pet off of something you shouldn't be attacking or redirecting your pet to a different target.

Aion's spiritmaster has it on a much higher level, but it's baked into spirit command skills you could actually put on your hotbars rather than on a separate pet UI bar (which you still had for aggressive/defensive/rest/despawn). Those commands could be done rapid-fire, overriding the default attack, and performed in order of player activation. Usually when I see or hear someone griping about wanting a "real pet class" or if I want to make a class/job concept that works that way, that spiritmaster from Aion is what I go to as the prime example of how a proper pet class should work.

Back to this game, it was stated during the job skill debut for Heavensward that summoner wasn't getting more egis because of something along the lines of making more sense just to empower the summoner. While this could be considered a more logical answer to the question of long-term mechanic progression for summoner, it could just as easily be considered an understanding that the pet UI and pet controls for this game just aren't suitable enough to expand on at both the gameplay level and at the coding level. Even if we wanted that full-blown pet job, I'm not so sure the game systems are at that point just yet.

Ultimately, I more in the mindset that egi glamours are the best way to go right now. In a game where damage takes precedence over utility and CC is something a tragic amount of players might have never even heard of, the current options we have for pet choices (the tank, the melee, and the turret) work just fine. Getting at least some level of individuality over what egis we have serving in those choice roles is about as good as I suspect it'll get.

The only real concern I have regarding this matter is what direction will summoner go in the next expansion. Would there be more focus on the egi this time around? Or would there be more focus on the caster once again, sinking egis into deeper levels of uselessness?

Theyre probably trying to please both sides of the equation, by phasing out egis so they can figure out how to make summoner more like a final fantasy summoner, we have to remember that arcanist was at the very least, an idea from even 1.0, as its guild was apparently around they may have attempted to slide in the concepts during the opening of 2.0(for one big reason: we needed another healer [SCH]) and are realizing that that route from a fan perspective, is very off base alien and foreign. So what better than to turn the focus on the player, until they get a couple expansions out to where summoner transforms from a pet class to a pure blast burst caster like it normally is in most series, minus 11 and x and 12(the summons being "playable"

I want to re-emphasize some points about a thread that was started a while ago, ill look for it in a sec but it had an img doc of planned "classes" for the original 1.0 among those was a shepard with distaffs. which seemed to be originally designed to be like the machinists turrets. Not eery enough to consider, id like to point to the planned assassin class, whose sole ability was -Dark Arts- sound familiar? Like DRK? I'm just saying i am sure theyre crunching their butts off with content and balance, but i think theyre trying to drain some already done ideas even from 1.0 until theycan really get into the nitty gritty with this job stuff

If they remove the Egis might as well re name the job altogether.

If we're gonna re do the whole job all over again the best thing to do is to divide intelligence between the Pet and the character so the Egi becomes relevant.

I don't think reworking the class should be an issue we could give the summon a new Story quest looking for the true power of the Egis. Dividing his soul with a Egi for true potential. (Give an egi mission every 6 months giving you a chance to create the brand new Summoner/Egi system) and of course re draw the Egis to actual beast size a bit like FFXI look a like

well think about it this way: bonus stat allocation between sch and smn is still a problem, much less with stat inflation now, and theyre learning towards going straight to making more jobs, rather than classes, or especially branching classes,you probably heard they arent pleased with sch/smn, but you shouldve heard yoshi talking about that dual job/class idea before the entirity of 2.0. things like wanting dark knight to branch from gladiator, etc. It wasnt until they got at actual idea of this idea in place, you know it looks good on paper sort of thing, that they realized. Now im not saying theyre getting rid of egis, but im saying it looks like theyre refocusing summoner on itself, and may consider phasing them out in the future, esp hw the new skills in HW are and work, at the moment.

They should also get rid off those bonus stat thing. I mean, its quite useless, because you ALWAYS spent your points the same way (the main stat of course). Better way is to invest those 30 points to improve specific skills (like pvp does).

I would be down with that being able to summon random summon's to do one off attacks and then you would have to wait for the cool down to finish before you could summon it again.

Comparing MMO to single player game is a moot point. You just can't compare the two giving the different system revolving around Summons. How would summoning Ifrit to perform "Fire" be any different than BLM casting "Fire"? The problem isn't that it's a pet job, it was an ill conceived pet job. To further compound the problem is the fact that the player community have given SE many great ideas on how to fix the job but meet with silence. Maybe the Devs don't read the English boards, maybe the forum mods aren't doing a good job at forwarding job specific feedback.

Only have seen SMN as a pet job in XI and XIV. X would be a stretch. Other then that it's been big attacks at the cost of MP.

Why? Why change the name? There is no reason you can't have some versions of them fly out when using abilities and dissipate, via the trances type abilities.

FF10 and FF11 are the only two, off the top of my head, that I can think of where you actually micro a "pet". Summons that I remember from Final Fantasy for the most part have... flew in > done something > left. There is no reason you could not keep in line with something like that via abilities or spells.

Pet Micro Management is not a prerequisite to be a Summoner or use Summons in Final Fantasy, in general. Now, that isn't to say I couldn't enjoy something like that, I enjoyed it in 11, and I also enjoyed it in 10 - but my point is, it doesn't have to be that... to be called a Summoner.

Edit :I'm pretty much echoing sentiments people have posted before I responded to you, but this is my gut response before reading those. lol

I'm actually kind of surprised they didn't do something like that while using DeathFlare instead opting for a head when entering trance. It would have been pretty sweet to see a ghostly version of Bahamut surrounding you as you lifted into the air for the Death flare. Or a ghostly smaller version of him burst from the Summoners chest while in the air, throwing wings back and head forward, right at the moment the Death Flare effect goes down, on where ever it is targeted. Things like having a Wave fly out from the summoner as leviathan spirals forward with it then dissipates, or whatever ... stuff like that... could be really cool with the use of Trance abilities... at least in my opinion. At least, way cooler than little egis sitting around doing... not much, in different colors and shapes. lol

Like Masekase_Hurricane said below a few posts, that is some options right there, of which there are many.

What makes a DD WHM different from a BLM? Nothing, at a basic level. It's the other tools that separate it, and what those spells can do, how you use them, playstyle, visual flair, animations, sound, lore etc... that's what makes it different. I mean how is a melee dps different from another melee dps? Same idea. I mean If you boil everything down to the basics, we all click buttons and do damage, does that mean they are all the same? No.

My only beef with that is, comes from that if you strip away most of the visual flair, and you were to just play the game as Grey boxes , no textures , no gear, no fancy animations etc... Some of the jobs play a little TOO similar to each other, not all of them... but I digress on that.

I don't feel like that is a HUGE issue with SMN. Honestly, the biggest hindrance right now, that I can think of, is SMN being shackled to SCH via ACN and vice versa for that matter. I mean, as far as changing anything on the base class or tweaking anything on those core abilities / traits

See that's just a cop-out, at anytime SE could just add another quest into the storyline saying "Summoners have found a way to harness/consume more aether" Maybe they find a safe way to enter the aether stream.

Well you are looking at it without using imagination it wouldn't cast basic fire it would be something like inferno leaving a burn dot, garuda casting tornado flipping the monster in the air briefly stunning the mob, titan causing an earthquake and inflicting slow and carby doing light based damage and leaving the party with regen.

Oh I totally agree on this, bc of stat inflation this system is getting really weightless to begin with. As for my speculation on the egi thing earlier, i dont think theyll get rid of them right away, but if they really are looking at the jobs vs classes thing, it wouldnt surprise me if they eventually seperated scholar from summoner, which would then give them ways to fine tune these jobs as seperate entities entirely,is all i was saying,in the end the they can either focus more on the pets, or on the dots burst, well i mean hw skills were proof what avenue they took on that decision in my honest opinion. Dont really care for being able to make ifrit look like a mini shiva or ramuh, id rather be able to one time use power summon ifrit for hellfire, flashy and powerful, as a cd tied to dreadwyrm trance, or something. But thats just me, im only stating what i noticed
