It's like the people who play a video game and say they can do a better job and it "should have been released after months work, not take a year or longer."
This is why some call you out, because when you have to translate something, as accurate and understandable as possible, it's going to take awhile. Blizzard for example doesn't even translate to chinese, there's a 3rd party that does the Chinese translations even though Blizzard officially supports that region.
It took if I recall, 3 months for the first version of the Japanese patch to WoW to be produced, by a 3rd party because it's not officially supported. A professional company taking a week or so to translate in 3+ languages is more than acceptable.

This is pretty darn funny considering China to Blizzard is the English community to SE. Half of their players (at least) come from China. And Blizzard is touted as having the best community relations in the industry. LOL.
Best community relations when it comes to their own region, you mean. But that's not relevant unless you are not part of said region. Hypocritical to the maximum.
Now that I started, let's continue. Korean MMO's are sometimes compared as having quite good community relations. How this makes sense is unknown to me. The development is completely outsourced to some F2P company in some cases, and in all cases the development at the very least lags behind the Korean, sometimes even the Japanese version. One would think that having the patches come out simultaneously would be the most important way to have good community relations in all regions.
In other words, on a global scale Square-Enix and FFXIV are the best in the industry when it comes to community relations. Blizzard outsources the communication to a third party while the Chinese WoW is at least an expansion behind the international version even though the Chinese make up half of the playerbase. That is not only due to lack of attention from Blizzard but also due to Chinese laws that are completely insane, but to say that Blizzard couldn't be any faster at bringing Chinese the newest patches would be silly. Korean devs outsource the development altogether or at least the patches lag behind for 3 months to years at time. The only way for someone to make an argument that any other developer is better at this than SE is hypocritical at best, completely ignoring that other regions outside their own exist at worst.

I feel embarrassed, disheartened, and somewhat outraged.
The level of self-entitlement that I saw from one poster in the beginning of this thread is astounding.
Japaneese isn't a Roman language. Anyone who understands anything about languages realizes that official translations are a pain to keep accurate, and when you're translating: you're representing a company by that translation. The slightest slip can cause an uproar, given how internet communities are often like an autistic child with anger management issues.
I also like to mention that a year ago no one, not a single individual here would have imagined we would get developers and project heads broadcasting themselves, ever. Now we have people insulting the company because the translation isn't up quick enough for them? It just shows as a perfect example that you can never please everyone, and that there are some people so miserable that they look for things to complain about.
Lastly. A small reminder to the world, that people are human. Propping up a perfected image of yourself or others will always wind up in disappointment. Some things don't happen the way they are expected or even intended to be. This is also true with businesses, especially in entertainment. But using it as an excuse to play the race preference card is nothing short of a public embarrassment to everyone who has to share the same public space.

Things will always be like this sadly. People have no filter when it comes to the internet, so they say whatever they want to say without really caring about how they come across. Being polite is such an underrated thing, not only in the online world, but in society in general.
Yeah, and just like everyone else, we got the live letter broadcasted live at the exact same time. There isn't a device on Earth that exists yet to instantly and accurately translate between languages for you, I'm sorry. The problem with your demands is that they dream of the impossible.
Because they're Japanese magazines published in Japan? Maybe if US magazines weren't so biased against FFXIV we could get them published stateside, too, but it's more of a problem on our end than anything.
Can you imagine them translating everything in every language in a live setting like that? They would cover only a quarter of the material if they had to repeat the same information in every language on the spot over and over. Not only this, but you can bet there would be errors due to rushed translations that people would rage over.
It's better for everyone to get as much information answered as possible and take the time necessary to get a solid, accurate translation. Everybody involved gets more out of it this way. All that is ask of you is to wait a few days to allow for translation. Is that really so much to ask considering everything they're providing for us?

I understand it takes time to translate. I get that, but it's not like a camera crew pushed Yoshi into a room within mere seconds and made him give this live cast. They had time to prepare. They had an entire forum topic dedicated to questions that could have chosen, prepped, and pre-translated for all of the languages. He also could have followed a loose script, and even answered some untranslated questions from twitter and posted those later. Why drum up all of this excitement for people to watch a live letter they cannot understand? Why defend that? I'm not asking for a miracle, but I am requesting better planning with these kind of events.

But on a more serious note, it takes time for them to translate this kinda thing. It doesn't help that Yoshi-P talks really, really fast at times. When I was listening to him during the broadcast, it was something along the lines of "We're going to release a mobile app andyou'regonnabeabletoviewyouritemlistchocoboand view other stuff". He can be a bit difficult to understand. He didn't have much time to prepare--he was reading off of a twitter feed, and I think that if he were going to plan out what he was going to say beforehand, he would have opted for a written developer's letter.
We did have something along the lines of subtitles, which was the twitter feed; those translators were working as fast as they can to translate, and they were running about 10 minutes behind, while missing a good share of information that was said. I can't really hate them for it. I don't think youtube would be easy to work with as far as making real-time subtitles go. It would take too much time for a verbal translator to translate each language in real time, as well. They'd probably rather be developing this game. It's a long way until we get our content, and if you haven't seen reinhart's posts, I'd suggest you look at that. He (or she) has done a magnificent job with translating.
As for why there isn't much media that's in non-japanese languages for ffxiv... well. FFXIV is a Japanese game, SquEnix is a Japanese company. They're headquartered in Japan, so there will be more Japanese media until the game makes a major breakout in International media (Right now, the USA just looked at the game and said "Welp. this sucks, onto other things!") . I hate to say it, but most of the active players that I have seen on my server have been Japanese. Do I think it's fair? No, not really, but I assume that for them, it's not really worth hiring a translator to translate those PDFs when: 1. Forum Reps can Explain stuff 2. Fans will probably translate it before the translator does.

Again, it's this age of self-entitlement that just because they shell out money that they deserve vip catering. To which the only reply I can think of is: "Get over yourself."
What you pay for, put simply, is the licence to log into the game. Nothing more. That's the paid contract. Everything else is pretty much just promises and expectations: enticements to keep you as a customer beyond what you pay for.
But as companies have shifted their perspectives to 'value the customer' more over the ages, customers in general have, in turn, gotten progressively more and more self-entitled. Working in customer service, I've gotten to see just how bad it is.
That said, that doesn't mean the company should have the right to stomp all over you and be closed off, like Square Enix has been in its past. However, to be honest, that's not happening here. We are receiving a perk, a special additional treat to help keep us excited and around. It has nothing to do with the paid contract or even the promise of making a better game they're trying to keep. This is pure extra, free content.
There's no grounds to believe you're entitled to anything here, paying customer or no.

Yeah, a lot of us paid a lot of money for the game, but it's been over a year and we still get to play for free. I made the mistake of buying the 80 USD collector's edition.... so I've gotten over 40 bucks back because of the lack of subscription fee?
At this point, they're essentially refunding us, and still providing excellent service given the circumstances.

But yeah. I'm on the same boat with you as far as the collector's edition. Honestly, what upset me more about the collector's edition was how we ended up with so much less than others who paid, as far as collector item wise. I've always been a big fan of the artwork.
Ahahaha sorry! I usually don't care what gender you are in real life vs. your character's gender; as long as you're not using your gender to cause controversy (e.g. Fake girls who use bad voice changers on vent to ask for items), you're good.
I'm just glad we didn't get the moldy cups other regions got. A few posters would have been nice, though... I never got my character's certificate, come to think of it.

I'm not telling you to be a "lap dog" I'm telling you to stop spewing hate about things you don't seem to fully understand. If Square Enix didn't care about what we had to say they wouldn't have set up these forums and they wouldn't have community reps acknowledging our problems with the game and in turn relaying it to the developers to result in *gasp* changes to the game based on player feedback.
When Square Enix does an interview, they can't simply translate it over into English and say "OK here it is!" Imagine if you copy/pasted an entire interview from a magazine online somewhere. Do you think that the company trying to sell said magazine is going to be happy about that? If there are any large announcements we'll 100% hear about them. Also, we do have a few websites for North America that get frequent interviews with Yoshida-san around the same time as those Japanese magazines. The NA FFXI community used to get an interview at Fan Fest each year and a rare premiere site summit- it was a somewhat rare occurance. With FFXIV we have been given several opportunities to submit questions. Communication is infinitely better with XIV than it ever was with the XI team.
In regards to having translators there for every language they support the game in... the broadcast would have to be five times longer than it already is because they'd have to have people on hand to repeat everything 3 additional times in other languages. The only thing I'll agree with you about is images- those can be done ahead of time but only if they know they're going to answer the question that encourages Yoshida to present said image (which is usually wordless concept art anyway). Which is hard to predict when they take the questions live.
I've worked as a translator and all I can say from my professional experience is that the actual translation for an interview like this could be done in a few hours.
Perhaps the problem lies in making the actual subs and encoding them into the video. But it still seems like a long time.
Even the fastest translations I've seen take at least a day to come out, and the subs end up with tons of inaccuracies. This is with multiple people (usually more than three) working on them the whole day, with the translation being up for interpretation (which really can't be the case here) and the series being translated lasting from 22minutes to 50 minutes.
