The Xbox One is only slightly less powerful than the PS4, both of which are far more powerful than the lowest spec PC that can run this game. Once PS3 is removed, it'll actually be low and mid-end PCs that will keep the game back. Also, the limitations of the PS3 were mostly due to the 512MB of RAM. Both the Xbox One and PS4 have 8GB, so it becomes a non-issue.
haha i am well aware of their specs ;) It was mostly a joke. To be honest, all of the 'ps3 limitations' 'server limitations' stuff just makes me think the dev team are inefficient with their programming. Better systems existed on machines a decade ago.
That said, both Xbox One and PS4 are fairly outdated in terms of hardware. They run very similar GPU's reasonably equivalent of my old card a Radeon HD 7870 - which was a middle range card 4 years ago.
Thing is, they won't care about low-end PCs as it does not require them to make a completely different version of the game. They already do not care about low-end PCs, which is just fine. If you can not run the game on your PC, it is your responsibility to upgrade. If you can't, well that is tough luck for you, upgrade your machine. However, you don't really have possibilities to effectively upgrade a console. Consoles are very static in their specs and therefore add extreme limitations to the game. I am only referring to the PS3 here as we all know the PS4 is decent enough, at least until the next PS comes out.
In either case, low-end PCs will never hold back the game as much as the PS3 currently does. However, for the devs the PS3 is a convenient excuse to not step up their game.
To be honest been seeing this in a lot of programs anyway. They just keep getting fatter and fatter. While you could do amazing things with like 32mbs of ram now-a-days you need 32 gbs of ram to do similary amazing things at times.
But do hope when PS5 or whatever it'll be called FFXIV will be made available for it as well - with a similar transition option as the PS3 to PS4.
I will unsubscribe if I have to play with Xbox users.
as long as the publisher chooses. that's the keyword. if lets say EA says no to battlefield playing with ps4, then it won't be cross platform.
Sony already allows it...said the PS4 and PS3 user who plays FFXIV with other platforms...removed because it's entirely possible I am mis-remembering and therefore wrong. "SIZE="1"]and played Burnout Paradise on his PS3 along side Xbox360 players and is[/SIZE]
...still wondering why this is considered ground breaking news.
Edit: It's interesting to note that PS4 and PC players already play together on Rocket league. The lack of a single central player ID/Account prevents some elements of partying up from being cross platform, but the matchmaking is. So, when Xbox One players get there, they'll run into PS4 players as well.
Sony took the stance (when it released PS4) that it was up to the developers to decide whether or not they implemented multi-player within PSN & PS Plus services or using their own infrastructure.
If the game uses Sony infrastructure for anything other than authentication and checking that the game is licensed, it will require PS Plus, and that would require some bridging because it's happening on Sony's network.
If the game only uses PSN for authentication and license checking but the multi-player is peer to peer or uses 3rd party servers (like FFXIV) then multi-player doesn't require PS Plus, and the ability to cross play is determined by the developer and their infrastructure.
PS3 & PS4 have always had open access to the Internet facilitating cross play from Day 1 - if the developer supports it.
PS4's GPU has a unified cache and 50% more compute units.
Oh, one thing that might be more interesting going forward for all players of PC/Xbox games. Microsoft already has an Xbox App running under windows. Xbox One uses an OS based on an embedded version of Windows. Microsoft's Universal Windows Platform (UWP) & Open Windows Platform is aimed at making applications a little more platform agnostic between PC and Xbox and any other device capable of running the RunTime environment. This blurs the lines further between Xbox and PC. Architecturally Xbox is a PC, and already runs a version of Windows. The Next Xbox may very well be your PC running a much expanded Xbox application that makes use of the whole UWP concept to virtualize the Xbox itself within the Windows running PC. In essence that would make Xbox and PC gaming synonymous, and would make cross-play even easier than it is today, as long as Windows gaming did not become locked into a proprietary UWP network.
The only issues FFXIV has because of the PS3 is UI stuff and that is only because they don't want an unfair advantage. I expect by the next expansion they will stop caring that the PS3 can't keep up.
The Xbox is plenty powerful enough to run FFXIV and not restrict it. I still don't understand how people who say they know so much about computers don't understand the difference between consoles and PCs. Yes consoles run on older hardware but they are designed for gaming and gaming only. They don't have to run a resource hog of an OS in the background. On top of that the engine can be optimized far better for a console than it ever could be for a PC because PCs are running different OSes, on different CPUs with different GPUs and different levels of RAM.
You can also bet they will not be pushing the game past its current base requirements because that could mean losing subscribers. Extra eye candy that is unlikely to increase sales at the cost of development time and paying customers just isn't something developers are into.
Well maybe xone can run it @ 800p, 20fps
Joking aside i do not care what platform someone plays on, as long as we all enjoy the game:)
XBox gamers still have Micro$oft to blame for them not being able to play this game on their console.
Yep. Microsoft still demand that Xbox Live players can have their own servers alongside the shared servers, even with the announcement. So it still won't come to X1.
Windows 10 mobile, unmitigated disaster (I know, I own one, the Lumia 950). Windows 10, laggy mess. Microsoft have the "we're too big to fall" mentality, so they don't care if they make a PR cataclysm.
Sure it would be nice to have FF14 on the xbox one, more revenue for the game would be nice. But to be honest if Phil spencer and SE are in talks at the moment all i really want right now is "DISSIDIA FOR XB1, DISSIDIA FOR XB1!!!!"
Everyone seems to forget about FFXI, its been done before and its most likely going to happen again.
They certainly do care about low-end PCs. Memory constraints are generally about PS3, but it's low end PCs without a separate GPU that have trouble keeping up with graphics processing. In fact, some of the so-called PS3 limitations are only an issue because SE designs systems to save on graphics processing even at the cost of using extra memory. They do that for the sake of PCs (where processing is the biggest issue), but then it causes problems in PS3 (where memory is the biggest issue). PS3 itself would be able to handle a lot more if SE wasn't designing to their real lowest common denominator, the PC.
While you raise decent points, you're blowing it far out of proportion. The PS3 wouldn't be able to handle far more due to its incredibly limited RAM and VRAM (256 for each I believe). While SE could offload some elements elsewhere (CPU perhaps?) it would cause major performance issues in areas with a lot of characters and I hear that's bad enough as is, let's remember that the PS3's hardware is almost 10 years old now. Both low end PCs and the PS3 are huge limiting factors, but they aren't going to suddenly cater development to high end rigs as that both cut into their subscriber numbers significantly, and increase costs.
You can check out other MMORPGs that tried having "decent" visuals while having decent performance, such as the newly released Black Desert. The amount of pop in is ridiculous. You thought Assassin's Creed Unity was bad? Think again, the grass reshapes itself around you even at walking speed and even then I struggle to get over 50 FPS with everything maxed out including high-end mode.
This is not supposed to end in a PC vs Console battle. I had a look at the PS3 stats and comparing them with the minium requirements for PC, I'd say it would still erradicate a lot of limitations. Also take into consideration that a PC can be upgraded for less than buying a new console usually. This makes the system way more flexible
Given I have a character on Balmung and I'm an Xbox user (Xbox 360, Xbox One, I'm a universal Windows platform developer, hence the Xbox One), I suppose she should unsubscribe now right? For the record, I love my Xbox, but I play FFXIV on PC currently.
I enjoy both my XBOX and my Playstation, my PC too... I'm very blessed to be able to play games on any platform that I want because I have a job that pays well, and a wonderful wife who likes to play video games with me...
So I'm with you, I hope that we'll see this game come to the XB1, for all those who can't have every gaming system. I have a lot of friends on XB1 who want to play but don't have a PC that can run this game, or a PS4.
Also, I believe I read somewhere that ESO when it was going to require a subscription was going to be on XB1 and allow online play with just Silver access, so if that's true, hopefully it's just a matter of time before we hear something from SE. I know I'll be buying another copy for my wife and I on XB1... :)
Are you sure this happened?
I'm just interested if PS and MS ever had a game where cross-platform multiplayer was allowed between the two before.
I never played Burnout Paradise myself, but everything I Google about it says that cross-platform multiplayer was not allowed and that PS3 users could only play with PS3 users and 360 players could only play with 360 players. Stuff about making sure to buy the version with "whoever your friends list is bigger" for on PS3 or Xbox because you wouldn't be able to play together.
Was it maybe a different game?

Good for SE. They got 190k more users by releasing the X360 version then they have to continue supporting this version for years.
Wasn't it a good lesson for them? Still want to bring FFXIV to the Bone? Hey if you don't want to bring new games to the PS Vita because of business reason then you shouldn't even think about XIV on the Bone. FFXV and KH3 should be cancelled for the Xbone as well. If I'm their CEO I'll finalize my order right now.
You know, I honestly can't say. It was so long ago now I can't actually remember with certainty. I was deep into their forum which included players from all platforms, and Criterion kept PS3 and 360 versions more or less in lock step with updates. It's possible I am mis-remembering due to talking about various aspects of the games with players from both platforms.
I'll edit my comment(s) to remove that element.
Done in my comment above, and I added this note about Rocket League...
Edit: It's interesting to note that PS4 and PC players already play together on Rocket league. The lack of a single central player ID/Account prevents some elements of partying up from being cross platform, but the matchmaking is. So, when Xbox One players get there, they'll run into PS4 players as well.
I should have gone with FFXI as my example instead of Burnout Paradise. I was wanting to include a PS3/360 cross play example, but FFXI is a better example since it's easily verified and doesn't depend on my sketchy memory, except it's PS2 & Xbox, not PS3...
I tripped over this news story about DCUO allowing PC/PS4 cross play in January, and talking about Xbox One getting DCUO this spring. Considering the timing of the MS announcement, I can't help but suspect that DCUO will allow PC, PS4 and Xbox One players to play together as well.
All this goes back to the simple point that this announcement from MS is not about bridging XBL to any other gaming network, it's about allowing Xbox One to talk to 3rd party game servers outside of XBL. So now Xbox One will catch up to PS2, PS3 and PS4 in being able to connect to servers outside their own proprietary network.
I'll be cool seeing Xbone players on the servers. I just doubt if they'll actually go through negotiations if they persist in the foolish idea of forcing the developers to have Xbone-only servers alongside the cross-platform ones. I'm very curious to see how talks will go concerning that.
Depends. XB1 still requires XBL for online games. Many people on PS4 play FFXIV because they dont require PS+ to play on top with the subscription.
Unless Microsoft changes that restriction. This information means nothing for FFXIV.
Windows support is ending later on after the console support does. don't remember when but it will.
ffxi was on ps2,pc, xb360 and on ps3 as i had a friend that played on ps2, ps3 and pc with a character on each at the same time
There was no PS# version of FFXI, but you could run the game on a PS3 under PS2 emulation on early 'phat' PS3s with the PS2 chipset pomn the motherboard. On later PS3 models that capability was dropped (stupid move by Sony) and so you could no longer play FFXI on PS3 unless you had one of the early models.
