Sounds like someone needs to go back to elementary school and learn basic categorization and sets of numbers. Venn diagrams, a square is always a rectangle but a rectangle is not necessarily a square? No?

I feel like the whole "games review" industry (or whatever they call themselves) is really beating the whole "XIV is dead" horse a bit too much. Like really, sure when the game was launched it was less than sketchy and more or less deserved most of its poor ratings. But it's been a year now and the game has made leaps and bounds of improvements and while it won't really be finished being overhauled until 2.0, it seems like these reviewers are just taking jabs at the game while its down for the amusement of the internet. Being fair and accurate is one thing, but kicking something while its down with the same old story just makes you look like an ass after awhile.

The announcement about 2.0 should have been more than enough proof that the game won't "die". Even if everyone stopped playing as the reviewer claims (which couldn't be farther from the truth), the dev team would simply close down the servers and continue their work on 2.0 as they would regardless. With the new version coming down the pike SE has already budgeted out development for the new version just like it would for any other game that doesn't already have people playing it. Subscriptions merely lessen/negate the financial impact of keeping the servers active during development for another year.

The game is totally dying gaiz! The 3-4 shouts a day I see in Ul'dah saying "NEW player looking for a LS" is a sure sign of death. The fact that I've see more people lately then I've seen in some week combined. The fact that 6 of my friends went and ordered FFXIV from SE and are enjoying themselves shows the game is dying...

First of all, Old Republic is going may not do too hot. I think Bioware is overestimating the number of Star Wars fans, and most of all I'm hearing tons of negativity about the game.
I agree though that current 15$/per month isnt the best way to go. There are better ways to go about it.
I say either remain 15$ per month and all updates and expansions come with it.
Or
F2P with expansions being purchased in a box every year. They could charge small fees for having a mog house and small things but I dont like RMTing items like they did with Mog Expansions in XI.

First I'd agree, the game has come a long ways from where it started. It was pretty bad, but being less bad doesn't make it good :S I sure hope it gets much better. I don't want the game to die certainly not but many people will leave and from a business stand point, losing any customer is bad.

Second, a planned version 2.0 doesn't mean it's proof it'll happen... I think they're starting to charge because they actually do need funding for a project of this size. Large companies drop expensive projects all the time... take Duke Nukem Forever, it was dropped a few times but was finally released recently but was too late and out dated. Starcraft: Ghost was cancelled by blizzard after being on indefinite hold.

I wouldn't agree that the game will die, but he has some valid points. It's a shame people here can't take another's opinion. I really do have to say many a fanboys on this forum that deem anyone else's opinion that's not like their own as invalid. But most definitely the population will dwindle down quite a bit before climbing back up or dying. I have my doubts it'll be anywhere near the top as far as most popular mmo

The game already died in a sense, its kind of come back from the dead a bit, its hard to say what impact the paid subscription will have although I'm guessing for the ones that have held on this long will n doubt stick around, I know I plan to.

Guess time will tell.

One thing is for sure if it had been any other company but SE making this game it would have died a long time ago.

As I said before this isn't a great deal to look forward to over the next year, most of this stuff is coming in the next 3-4 months.

I just hope they have a good bit planned to keep people entertained.

Cause the same people who want to play FFXIV want to play a WoW clone with a Star Wars Skin, and such(i wanted swtor to be playble but bioware dialogue can't save a wow clone to me). The way he said "its been free to play for a year, and now they deciding to charge for it now" proved he was ignorant about the game and the time/money put in it. Also he said "the devs say this is what should of came out at release, so they're now charging for it", hahahahahahhahahahaha, they said "this is 50% of what we think this game should have, specifically talking about the standards of mmos.

I don't care if you hate on XIV, but hate on it while being informed.

Because it generates website traffic. If a lot of "gaming journalism" websites could, they'd just slap pictures of naked women all over their sites for max monetization. Since they can't, they just stick to editorializing as much as they can in a negative light and as they say "if it bleeds it leads".

That being said, the FFXIV server population leading up to patch 1.20 seems to be increasing on Mysidia at least. Its anyone's guess as to how many people are going to remain once payments begin, but if my linkshell is indicative of anything(new players who just lurk the Lodestone forums), the game will probably be just fine. Besides, Square-Enix has to have taken a decrease in players post-1.20 into account for their financial figures, and yet they're still trucking along with the prep for 2.0.

No matter what, this project will continue, I think that much is obvious. Hopefully it will be worth the wait, but I'm happy to stay (and pay) in the meantime as I do have a good time with the game, even if I am a dirty casual! Saying that though, most of my money goes towards games, and I currently also have a DCUniverse sub and fully intend to also be playing the Old Republic.

I used to think it was a tough amount of money, but now that I'm working it's like...I can pay for *all* my MMOs in around three hours work on the first day of a month, and for what I get back out of them in terms of entertainment, I think it is completely worth it. Honestly, even if the game was perfect now, like the best game ever, they would lose customers as some folk just aren't willing to pay monthly for a game. Such is life, and it is their choice, even if I raise an eyebrow that they then happily drop down £50 a month or so for Sky Sports without complaint.

Though he does bring up a valid point about people not wanting to pay for a product they've gotten for free for the last year, and about F2P MMOs changing up the face of the online gaming world.

Personally I think a better decision on SE's part would have been to implement a F2P model (with a cash shop to buy services/vanity item/etc) until 2.0 is released, at which point they would switch to the P2P model. This way people who want to support the project financially can do so, while still keeping interest among the players waiting for the game to be worth paying for high. Instead they're telling all the potential customers waiting for the game that should have been released last year to screw off until next year, or pay now for a game they don't feel is worth the monthly fee as it is.

ya then when p2p does come people who pay for item would be overpower and that what SE never like when it came to final fantasy xi or even final fantasy xiv. I think it smart to go p2p it would fish out the troll and the forums would be fill with ppl who really want to make this game work.

There will always be an audience for FF XIV. It will never be as successful as other MMOs like WoW and probably Star Wars. Japan alone will keep this game alive though and Square will continue to support it.

I see a lot of people making this assertion; that SE won't get enough subs to sustain development because people are going to leave.

1) Does anyone here honestly think that SE doesn't realize they're going to lose players due to charging subs? The obvious answer should be 'no, of course SE realizes they're going to lose players when subs start". Yoshi even concedes as much when he suggests that players who feel it's not worth it now perhaps follow the game's progress and come back and check it out again after 1.21, 1.22, etc. Why else would he make that statement unless he already realizes there are people who won't subscribe yet?

I think it's more than a tad arrogant, not to mention ignorant, for people to assume that such a thing as "people will quit when subs start" could only be conceived by people posting on a message forum.. but that it wouldn't have occurred to SE themselves. FFS.. it happens with every single MMORPG to launch, ever, after the first 30 days, once the subs kick in.

Folks, you don't get to the size or status of a company like SE, and stay there, by being naive or not considering or preparing for all the possibilities.

2) They've maintained the game up 'til now, over 12 months, without charging a sub. They've clearly - per their own say-so - re-structured things within the company to make sure XIV gets the man-power and the money it needs to keep going. They've been saying time and again that they are absolutely committed to doing what they have to in order to turn the game around, because both their reputation and, of course, that of the FF franchise depend on it. They've already said at least a couple times that they see 2.0/PS3 release as their "last chance" to turn things around.

They are implementing subs because they have reached the point where it is felt that FFXIV would be sufficient as a launching sub-based MMORPG, just as they said they would do almost a year ago. This isn't some act of desperation... They're doing precisely what Yoshi and Wada stated they would do months ago.

Any revenue they get from subs going forward will be 100% more than they've been getting for the past 12+ months. That can only be an improvement for them.

It's just amazing to me, in light of the past year and all that SE has done to turn the game around, that people so quickly forget all of that, and revert to the "Internet Armchair Expert" mode of declaring "what SE needs to survive", and that "the sub money won't be enough to continue development".

3. The guy in the video is simply using the same regurgitated, baseless and false dichotomy ridden "logic" as so many others... "Oh.. ToR is coming out... People are gonna wanna play that! Dur hur".

It makes the assumption that somehow the launch of ToR is something everyone's waiting on. There are plenty of people playing FFXIV who have no interest in ToR. There are people playing FFXIV who are going to also be playing ToR simultaneously; keeping both subs active. They are interested in ToR, but they also enjoy FFXIV and want to stick around to be part of where it's going. Almost every member of one of my LS's alone is in that category.

All that video goes to show is that even someone who's putting their face out on the Internet can be just as incapable of using basic logic and thinking through obvious logical fallacies as any person posting on a message forum.

I don't know what your idea of a vanity item is, but it's not what I suggested.

And I seriously doubt SE needs a bunch of people sucking up and defending every bad decision they have ever made to get FFXIV to 'work'.

Have you ever played a F2P MMO? 99% of the stuff people buy in the cash shops are VANITY items. Costumes, weapon covers, stuff that has zero impact on the character's strength whatsoever and is mostly (if not entirely) just to show their characters off.

And considering people have been playing for a year with multiple 50s, I don't see what other way they could possibly be OP except selling ridiculous weapons/armor. What, did you mean more people will be OP?

No one really going to buy it anyways there better off going p2p and getting a income then a maybe people would buy this item for 5$ this month. Even if they lost 50% of players 50% players can fund for 2.0 without issue they need some cash income and how i'm seeing it a lot of willing to pay for this game.

That's pretty much what I'm doing anyways, I'm just worried that a lot of the people that have spent the last year building the community of this game will be gone. I'm particularly worried about the effect on the in-game market if even 25% of the playerbase quit. It's gonna be a rough few first months after they return to the P2P model...

Market? everyone have 50 craft most people have 3 to max of the craft level to 50 and overprice on the ward so i don't think that be a issue. Community i can see a lot of my friend leaving by then again the one that i'm playing with are staying so i don't mind much but i can see world like yours and other being very small due to the p2p unlike selbina which is full and lot's of players even from besaid reroll over to my world.

I think they should cut down world to 2.0 so people be more together or something.

Protip: 5-10k subs (you're crazy if you think it's gonna be any higher than this, sorry) won't "fund" the game, but will help cut some losses. That's all they want, anyways; SE does know that the game will not be slightly profitable till 2.0.

I must be playing the wrong F2P MMO >_> because those that I do play, big spenders spend minimum $500 on NOT-VANITY item, and it can cost a few thousands dollars to get the uber leet enchantment you want.

How hard it is to accept the fact that SE themselfs said they will keep the game going at the very least till 2.0 even if there's very few players at that point? Are you going to say that "someguy on the internet" is a more reliable source than "the company who makes the game"?

How hard it is to accept the fact that not everyone will suddenly stop playing all and every game and go play Star Wars? Last I heard something like that, FFXIV was going to be a WoW killer.

Wow, that guy has no personality. I know people on these videos are basically reading off a teleprompter, but this makes it obvious. No one really cares much about gamrTV anyways.

He obviously didn't read about current and upcoming content on this game. While true the population will decrease, but in all fairness, the majority of that are people who are not even really playing the game to begin with. I guarantee I won't see anything different when I log on after subscriptions come back.

Joking aside, I think F2P has its place, sure, but I prefer P2P as one MMO fee isn't going to cost a fortune for me. Making the game item shop based on the other hand...

...now that would kill XIV for me. The differentiation of players should come from skill and team spirit and not from the size of your bank account.

Yeah, I'll be paying for TOR along side FFXIV myself while seeing about paying for a few friends' subscriptions all the same. Hopefully one or the other will be payable by the bulk so I won't have to worry about paying monthly at all. (But if not, I got three free months in XIV waiting regardless thanks to crysta.)

I find it funny that the word fanboi is thrown around so much. It's not his opinion (paid or not) that is to be white knighted against. The fact that he has no clue what he is talking about is what makes the (as you would call them) fanboi stand out because you as a *Hater* which I officially deem Death Knight, want the game to fail. It's obvious the game has done you wrong.

As for Swotr; Almost 4 out of 5 of my friends who have gotten in to beta are already disappointed with it. Swotr will have no real effect on XI/XIV type players, because simply put, much like XI *in general* most people that played XI did so because WoW didn't do it for them.

PS: Btw im'a roll a Jedi Bloodelf Consular, how bout you?

FFXIV has nothing to worry about, sure the game will lose a few players at first, but as those subs start funding dev work and as better reviews inevitably come out this game will gain paying subscribers. I also have a few friends in the SWTOR beta who all say it's WoW with lightsabers, nothing special.
