Your thoughts on Astrolgian so far?

@vlady: i feel you misunderstand something about the healer...

- White mage pro is the power of him healing, it's the one that can launch the most potent heal, him direct heal is by far the best, especially for group healing. the regen offer it more flexibility avoiding to stuck it into chain heal. however is not it main tool, the main tool of the white mage stay the strong direct heal.
- Scholar pro is the exelent capacity to adapt to the situation. it main tool are the shielding of him healing and the fairy that heal with them, they can even leave the healing to it and adopt a more versatile position into the fight. it role is the most free of the three healer. because of the shield and the fairy it can easily switch between dps and healer.
- Astrologian pro is the utility and support of the class. it's not to outshine either of the other healer, but to complement each of them. plus it have a lot of possibility in the domain of the buff, by far it's the most buffing jobs we did get, the closer of a support jobs.

astrologian will not make the other jobs irevelant since him jobs it's actually to complement and cover the lack of either healer. for make simple a group that have a scholar and don't have a white mage, the astrologian can adapt it gameplay and become more like a white mage. if a group with a white mage don't have a scholar, the astrologian can adapt it gameplay to be more like the scholar.

it's not a point to become better than the other jobs, since it can't do both role at the same time (it can't change him sect in fight). but, asking for the astrologian to be on par with other healer is legitimate. what you say is not different of the dragoon and monk when the ninja was announced, you are scared to loose your place, but that not the case, it's only another option....

At present it seems like... really weak. I don't know what to think of it yet.

I will level it up soon, but at present I am not seeing the appeal.

The buffs from cards? Nice, but you only apply their decent effect onto a single party member which is a letdown.

I really only find Bole/The Balance good. Mindyou I LOVE The Balance. Perhaps the MP could be useful on a Bard/MCH using their TP/MP songs, or on a WHM directly. But really aside from that just reshuffle those other cards.

At low level ewer is good on flash-hallpy pld and great for drk-they cant get mp recovery from the party but cost reduction sure works!

Spire is good on aoe-ing phys classes or ones that just run through tp stupid fast. can be used on tanks too.

Spear is the most situational. when in doubt I toss it on a mch or something that has a lot of short cds they use rotationally

arrow is best on casters sofar- it increases skillspeed, spellspeed, and autoattack speed so good for any dos or yourself in a spamhealing pinch

bole needs little explanation-primarily for tank. same with balance-whomever is doing the most damage

you can make these aoe but lesser potency with royal road. or extended duration. or increased potency.

yes their heals are weaker. this has sofar only been an issue in very large pulls that are extended too long due to lack of aoe, or tanks that use no defensive cds, but I see this becoming an issue along with mp consumption later on.

spear is maybe the most powerfull of the whole. i'm not joking, if you put it under +50% of effect, it lead to a -30% of cd, place it on any machinist and it will be a pure bliss for him, since it do play with tons of CD, when you think about 20-30 second less for the next phase of burst it's very powerfull.

actually it work for any dps that use CD for complement them dps, well used the spear can have a really huge increase of dps, since it will reduce the time between the use of CD like Blood for Blood for example.

an example of what i means, cast spear improved on a ninja before it use TA, it will reduce the cd on TA of 18 second. (or 12 second if you don't boost it) if you count the time TA effect is up, it means you only need to wait 32 second before the next one instead of 50 second. more TA, means more global dps on the monster.... if that not powerfull.

ps: one point very important, Spear don't reduce the CD that are running, but the one that while start while having the buff.

I agree. a good MCH makes great use of it. Then I get a crap MCH and feel like I wasted a buff.....

i play with a friend with a vocal, we coordinate the buff and all, and he ask for it himself, he prefer this at balance buff actually. since less time between CD will be far better than a flat +10% or +15% dps for him.

So Nocturnal Sect only applies to 1 skill?
Not much point...and said skill is level 58.

Not like FFXIV ever is capped at Lv.60.
The thing about AST is simple, it can take the Role of being the WHM or SCH in the Group with the Stances.
Both have their Advantages, Nocturnal Sect is Damage Mitigation when there is a lot of Monsters around and Diurnal Sect is the Stance where you can Regen the whole Party while trashing Mobs with Gravity or other Abilities.

I have seen so many AST in North Thanalan while FATE Grinding, they use Spire/Balance Buffs on theirselves which is wrong.

I always give up the "Arrow/Spear" Card after drawn, which results into AoE Card Buffs. I had 2 AST's in the Chrysallis Thanks to Trial Roulette with different Stances over the Fight.
Result : The Boss in there just got trashed and the Tear Add didn't need to be LB3'd *lol*

My AST is iLvl 121 btw with a iLvl 120 Orb dropped from Dusk Vigil. Heals are critting around 4.000 ~ 4.400 and MP gives trouble only when I use Lightspeed in combination with Cleric Stance and tons of Gravity^^

AST is very lackluster and while it may be fun to mess around with there is no way ever that ast will replace either whm or sch, you cant match either whm or sch at what they are doing by that logic why would i bring an ast which is meh at both over a sch which is the god of utility and mitigation or over a whm which is the god of group healing. Also ast/whm is much less viable than sch/ast due to losing supervirus covenant or sacred soil (talking bout progression)

So i have my astrologian at level 54 now, done lots of stuff with it :). The cards are strong when uses correctly, like seriously strong. Manipulating them through spread, shuffle and royal road brings a nice level of skill to the job. The healing is fine, my co-healer in Ravana story mode got them selves killed and managed to rescue the sitution on AST, its through put of HPS in that situation seemed to be fine. However, when going into Sohm Al (lvl 54 dungeon iirc) i had some issues, which may have been down to the tanks choice of play style. So new dungeon, new people, tank decided to speed run the thing O.o. It went fine, however the AST theough put of healing for this was ditincly low. Even in Diurnal Sect using Aspected Benefic, Benefic and using procced Benefic II and then shoring up the healing with Essential Dignity, there seemed to be something slightly lacking with its healing capabilitites. However, this could entirely be down to trying to speed run a dungeon when undergeared as well. What also didnt help was the abrd who stood out of aoe healing distance all the time on the opposite sides of the boss arenas, so far that if i wanted to get him in the aoe healing, the BLM would have been out of range O.o.

Also, synstry seems to have applications in raids, but in 4 man dungeons this seems to be less useful :(. Nice skill, but has its distinct times and places to use.

The lack of cooldowns on AST to boost your own healing is also noticable, making the AST through-put of healing feel noticably weaker compared to WHM/SCH.

My only real concern once i get to end game is with tanks not understanding AST vis-a-vis speed running end game dungeons, i am not sure if AST has to tools to get the HPS ip to where it should be.

In a raid, its going to be strong. :)

SMN also brings supervirus, AST brings Disable which can stack with supervirus. AST has exactly the same skill as sacred soil whilst in Noctural Sect, albeit on a longer cooldown.

WHM can not match AST buffing power through cards.

SCH cant match AST buffing capabilities through cards.

Three healers, each bringing something unique to the raid.

Exactly, the tooltips are non-existent so I have no idea if it's just not there or?
I'm asking if the SCH effect works on all of what Diurnal works on.
Also Rez+SC doesn't work as a macro.

My own take on it right now is that AST suffers too much in its basic heals in return for very circumstantially useful buffs. It results in a number of "if this and this and this happen, then using the cards this way was worth it". For example getting Spear card just as someone is about to trigger several abilities with cooldowns, or Bole before a big boss hit, or Spire on someone who would have ran out of TP if you had not used Spire. And the more times you spend redrawing to fish a good card, the less useful it is overall.

Take a best-case and always-useful scenario where you royal road Arrow or Spear, then draw Balance or Arrow, for raid dps. You increase raid dps by 5% for 15 seconds, at the cost of two draws, so once a minute. This works out to 1.25% dps to the raid. This also only has an 11% chance to actually happen, without using additional abilities like spread and shuffle. Compare this to Selene, a pet, who offers 3% speed with 50% uptime, and works 100% of the time. So about 1.5% bonus dps.

Celestial Oppression seems sadistic.
You extend all your party's buffs by 5 seconds but also stun enemies.
If used in the wrong location, you could easily throw off the tanks' stuns during a boss or trial.

Cleared FCOB with both Whm and Sch. My Astro's 56 now but I find it fairly weak compared to the other two.

Just a few comparisons

Whitemage - Raw healing power (Divine seal +30% heal potency), Holy (stuns and doesn't require a target), Benediction.
Scholar - Fairy, almost OP lustrates for instant heals, great mana management.

Astro heal/shield potency is slightly lower. When your tank or entire party gets smashed and everyone's low on health, Astros have only 1 emergency instant heal which is on a 40sec CD (single-target too). No there's no Cure III for you, no Divine-sealed Medica II, no lustrates that can bring your party back from the grave. Lightspeed? LOL! And oh yeah those cards aren't going to make you a powerhouse, the randomness just means that you don't have reliable on-demand answers to whatever is thrown at you. To those who don't understand, run some level 50+ dungeons and you'll immediately notice the difference. A lot of the bosses do so much party-wide damage that sometimes it's difficult to recover from, if I had my Whm/Sch on those occasions it would have been a breeze.

I like AST so far(almost 53) but my observations on where it needs help:

enhanced benefic is not useful. freecure is MUCH more useful than a random proc that probably won't do you any good because if you're casting benefic 1 no one is probably in need of a benefic 2 immediately
spear: spear isn't good, aside from royal road. I always groan when I pull it and already have extended up. spire isn't my favorite but I just don't know much about tp usage
nocturnal sect: this is really bad. what is the point of this stance? it doesn't have throughput, or efficiency. it stinks. why would I ever want weak shields that cost a ton of mana.

that said I don't think the sky is falling just yet. we're 3 days in.

what do you mean how so? they have better buffs than ast, if anything. and don't try to say 'smn can virus too' because they is no guarantee a smn will be in your group. and all of those buffs are controllable. just look at how much easier it is for a scholar to do a 10% aoe damage reduction than it is for an astrologer. well actually ast can only do 5% so.. another point sch.

No that's not better then AST. Unless your goal is to make it easier to heal. Instead of trivializing the DPS check like AST can do with the right buffs.

Hopefully we will get calculations and parses showing how much DPS each healer contributes.
SCH+AST can add alot of extra damage to the raid. Compared to SCH+WHM. Normally the difficulty comes from the DPS check.

SCH is probably alot more enjoyable to heal with over AST lol.
Would rather see a SCH/WHM in duty finder then a AST.

I just got to 38 and I'm not really sure what I think. I loved it for awhile, loved drawing the random cards and seeing how I can best put them into play. Now that I have RR though there's something less exciting about it. Like using RR on a card I don't want I feel like takes forever before you get your next one. I mean it's 1.5 mins from the time you first Draw, so I'm finding that unless it's a boss fight, usually RR doesn't help much in a dungeon pull as many times (even without RR actually) I'll pull the Balance as the last enemy has like 10% HP left. I agree with another poster now that I read it, it does feel like healing as an AST is like WHM with Cleric Stance on. I'm so used to seeing a tank at a certain point of HP, and knowing exactly that one Cure II will fix that etc, but Benefic II just seems to do 70% of what I was expecting. Might be my gear as well, just torn on if I should keep at this or get my WHM to 60 first instead.

I think my other issue with the cards is that people don't know what they are or when they are up on themselves, and for me healing you don't really see the direct benefit. I mean if I use The Balance on a DPS, I know that more damage is being done, but it's not visibly more damage, and sometimes (like in Sunken Temple just now) the BLM I used it on would just keep spamming Physik over and over to the point I told him I know how to heal. So because of that I found since Friday I've lost some of the excitement of drawing a card, like drawing Ewer at the start of a fight, or Spear and it becomes more routine on who you use it on. Like when I use I forget the skill but where you get the 30% healing bonus on WHM, you can visibly see you're pumping out higher heals. But when I do like the Bole on the tank, I don't really ever feel like oh wow look at how little damage he's taking now. Again maybe this will change at 50+ when things are harder as well. Not going to fully judge until I'm at 50 with it where I can run the stuff I do now as a WHM to compare, as that's the only real way I'll know. Just finding when things have gone south in a boss where the whole party is getting low, Helios I need to use sometimes a couple times to get everyone back up, and I do actually find myself looking over to see if I forgot CS on!

I'm also finding when doing leves that they seem way harder than when I did them as WHM, like I'm constantly healing myself or having to try them a couple times even at the recommended level, when as WHM I'd always do it at the highest level possible and never had problems.

the math was already posted and selene is a better raid buff than a perfect balance uptime. when you consider that you're not always going to pull extended arrow or balance it gets even worse. ast has worse damage buffs, and it has worse defense buffs. like I said the sky is not falling yet but when the dust settles I am not going to be surprised if we see some ast buffs.

I like AST. Coming from Scholar, I am missing the "security" that the faerie and the shields offer, but I'm a sucker for cards and orbs, so I will just have to bit the bullet and play more like a White Mage. I can't wait for Nocturnal Sect. Anyone have something to say on the shields? Thanks!

Just to confirm, you can't stack aspec bene and helios shields, yes? Regardless that is kinda upsetting T.T

Makes me wonder why they don't allow stance switching. To me, that would excuse the weaker potency and add some flair to the class.

No the shields don't stacks unfortunately, the regens does.

I don't really see the point of not being able to switch stance during the fight when you consider that only 2 heals ( +1 if you count collective unconscious) are affected by stance.

I find AST a bit lacluster for now, even if i have fun spamming gravity during light speed and listening to this awesome sound effect ^^

The nocturnal part of the tooltip sows up after unlocking nocturnal sect. I reported the macro bug in the forum last night. Diurnal and nocturnal also give you stance benefits aside from affecting those 3 spells, diurnal gives haste and nocturnal increases potency.

Okie dokie, here is my level 50 comparison feelings.... I used the same gear on diurnal/whm and the same gear on sch/nocturnal for closeness. weapons excluded of course but all ilvl 100. sch and ast had 30 points mind, whm has 30 points piety (don't judge plz)

My diurnal sect astrologian heals are slightly weaker than the whm, but my spells are all slightly quicker cast. I actually found the potency of the regen aspected helios slightly stronger than the regen of medica 2, though medica2 had a better frontloaded heal...I assume this is from spellspeed affecting hots now. Aspected helios also casts faster and costs less mp than medica2.

my nocturnal sect astrologian had the same casting speed as my sch but had a higher healing potency than my whm very slightly (probably due to the piety points), retaining of course the lower mp costs. helios and succor share casting speed, aspected helios is slower. aspect helios is about the same as succor and same mp cost, aspect benefic is slightly weaker than adlo but also instant. Sch galvanize also doubles on crits, ast shields do not. (at least the tooltip certainly doesn't state it like adlo does. though succor doesn't have that note so idk...)

I was surprised to find out that at lvl 50 ast mp costs were actually lower than the other 2 healers- it sure didn't feel like it leveling up. the lack of free heals from the fairy or highly potent, mana efficient hots to shore it up is what I think may be the cause of the feel of being weak/spammy to me. WHM still has amazing self healing buffs, and sch still has amasing party buffs. ast's self buff seems much too situational-you really don't want to use it in an emergency for something like bene2 spam because of the potency loss, but it's great for stuff like spamming esuna or raising a lot of people. The card buffs will shine the most in a static when you know which buffs affect your members in the most efficient ways.

ash/ast shields don't stack whm/ast hots do. 4 regen effects like double whm sure is fun :p

Ahhh Chrysalis "1 minute Aoe Balance goooooooo!!!" When I drew the balance card it was like "Thats on spread." before being dragged into the tear I pulled spear and proceeded to giggle maniacally.

Iunno an instant cast galvanise is pretty damn useful to use during akh morns/bahamut claws.

Currently people don't seem to get what kind of healer a Astro is, and that is a speed healer, they can react faster and do more clutch heals then either of the other healing classes. I made a lot of people go "Wow" when we were doing the mario kart method in T9 since I popped lightspeed and could use even Aspected Helios, also mana management if properly managed is no issue since I was less oom than I normally am playing SCH.

Tooltips are there, it has both diurnal and nocturnal effects explained on aspected Benefic and Helios read the entire tooltip.

The buffing capabilities from AST are exceptionally strong when used correctly. They are a burst buffing class, unlike SCH since selene buff. The ability to significantly manipulate things like burst dps checks with Balance, mitigate huge tank busters with Bole, reduce healing costs and blm costs through Ewer etc.

Eye for an Eye is avilable on all other caster classes, Supervirus is brought by 2 jobs, sacred soils has its AST equivalent.

Disable is a brilliant ability that can stack with virus and more.

I have just recently reached 51 on my AST, this is a class that I have been looking to play for a long time, but it has many flaws.

the card mechanics are designed well -SE did an amazing job with the cards and it is well thought out. It seems to me that in 4-man dungeons single buffs may be more useful than waiting for a royal road buff ( sometimes taking a gamble by spreading and royal roading at times can pay off too) and in 8-man dungeons a party wide buff is just too good to pass up.

The ast is like a "short burst" type of healer i.e. less potent but more frequent heals. Practically it doesn't work though - to match the healing output of the other healers you are almost casting two heals in the same amount of time as another healer would cast one, despite logic dictating otherwise (380 potency vs 400 potency). It is just not mp efficient.

At level 50 both whm and sch have aoe damaging skills (bane, shadowflare, miasma II and holy) and ast only gets gravity at 52. This reduces the usefulness of ast in my eyes, sch or whm being able to cleric stance and do damage seems superior to being able to apply rng buffs.

When doing level 50 content, I struggled with ast more so than I initially thought I would. In 8 man content, If the other healer dies, you have no idea how difficult it makes it for ast - not to mention eating a huge chunk of mp trying to raise the healer. Ast just does not have the potent heals to bring a team back from the brink of death efficiently.

To me AST looks very bland when you get down to it.

First.. The heals...

They are weaker.. they cost more MP... due to no way of getting reduced cost or free cures 2's.

They have stacking issues... AST dots don't stack with eachother (WTF SE, we went through this once already back in the day) and the shields don't stack with a SCH.


Overall an AST has subpar healing with bad efficiency for the tradeoff of being able to act like both classes and have RNG Buffs.

The damage Spells...

AST Dmg spells are boring.. and kinda suck.

RNG... RNG...RNG... Ive got Ewer 7x times in a row..

The duration is to short on the buffs, in no way reliable. SCH Pet is Reliable.

It just seems like a lot of effort for a whole 1.5% raid buff for what ? 15 seconds ?

BOLE, save it back and have a clutch cooldown to help tank.. but.. SCH and WHM already do this with eyefor an eye..


The RNG factor makes it where when you need that buff... your not gonna get it.. even with a redraw.. The only good thing the cards have is you can store one.




They are going to need some help... but I can see why they would be left weak as they can act like both classes for healing.

Would you guys say AST is proactive or reactive healing? I find it really hard to be proactive with my heals on WHM, as much as I love healing, just don't think I'm going to cut the mustard at end-game content, and highly unlikely I'm going to get any better :/

It depends on who you're grouped with or if you're solo healing.

Solo healing, I imagine you'll probably have to be more reactive than anything.

With a SCH, you'll be more reactive. With a WHM, you'll be more proactive.

Get to level 57/58, go heal The Vault last boss and open your eyes people. Your lightspeed 'fast heals' which is on a 150sec cooldown ain't gonna cut it.

The party takes so much AOE damage (during last phase every 3-5 secs he AOES on top of smashing the tank) that what you need is raw healing/mitigation. At that point your priority is to keep everyone alive, not to have your fancy cards reduce TP cost.

The party takes so much AOE damage (during last phase every 3-5 secs he AOES on top of smashing the tank) that what you need is raw healing/mitigation. At that point your priority is to keep everyone alive, not to have your fancy cards reduce TP cost.

This is what ive been expecting sadly

Still torn here, was over it last night so was playing my WHM trying to get it to 60 instead. I find I keep comparing AST to my WHM wondering which skill is most similar to one on WHM so thinking why am I even playing a different role when I think WHM is perfect lol. I wish that RR worked in the reverse. Like do your draw, pull the Balance for example, but then do RR and in return for waiting another 45 seconds, you get the enhanced Balance, instead of throwing that card away in hopes for something better. Not that I'd throw the Balance away, but I mean sometimes you pull the Ewer, have no use for it, so RR it, and then get the Spear, so it's just like you wasted 1.5 minutes for really a minor benefit.
