It's easy to understand, really. They don't want to just release the English ones and then cause people to misunderstand something by translating it themselves.

It was a jest, guys, geez...
@ Lydeck
This is the quote I was talking about; not the naming conventions themselves.
"Due to preparations for the launch of Heavensward, Au Ra will not be available immediately after launch. We do plan on making them available in a future patch. Please
look forward to it."
When I read this, I see someone "quoting" that the Race isn't available at launch.
Thats why I asked if they could source it; or would just call it troll.
@ Viridiana
actually I doubt anyone would think that was a Joke. With as many things throughout XIV's lifetime that have been getting pushed back a patch, til relaunch or expansion; "quoting" that could have been real and I, for one, wanted to know its authenticity before launch. The fact that the multi-languages are taking so long to translate the Naming Conventions just leads to what other troubles could they be hitting
So if someone quotes something without a link, name, or source, you demand the original poster provide one or it's trolling? OK, would you take this in earnest?
Just because something's quoted doesn't mean it's an official statement, or even that it was a forum post by anyone.Quote:

Can't comment on the taste of the joke, but people shouldn't have to spoonfeed you that it's a joke.Quote:

Hoping we get them this week, running out of time.
I have to admit I'm starting to get worried about this too. If they don't release this soon then they're going to have a flood on their hands when people all over the place go to change their character names. Not something the Mog Station needs when it's already going to be fielding Pre-order codes, registration, etc.
There may be a flood anyway, but please make sure it happens well before the 19th!
How many times do I have to tell you people... it's coming soon™! Not tomorrow, not after breakfast, soon™!
but when will then be now?

Anybody else suddenly worried we'll get the naming conventions with the Live Letter on the 18th?
I hope not D;
I'd like to name change my main before expac
Clearly they've decided to release them during the extra Q&A from LFtPL Part XX. Just give them a little more time.
No! Let's not let them off the hook on this. Nearly two weeks ago they said they would be posted 'soon'. It would be a violation of our trust to put off releasing them until the Live Letter so they can have more filler for it. They're already 1 1/2 weeks late for the time they promised us that they would release them.
To the SE Devs:
You noted that we've been waiting patiently and indeed we have. But it's getting tiring, and to hold off announcing these until the day before Early Access would violate the trust you've worked so hard to build with us. We were enthusiastic that you would release the naming conventions in Late May because there are many of us who love the other races you've designed for us and don't want to abandon those. So instead we want to create new characters so we can enjoy all of the amazing content you've put together for us over the years.
You promised the community almost 2 weeks ago that they would be released 'soon'. 'Soon' is already beginning to feel strained, and if you hold off announcing these until the E3 conference, it will simply feel like a word you used to string us along. Please don't do this. :(
-- A fan who believes in you.
I think it's more a case of resignation than anything else. It's not even slightly surprising anymore that they would break their word in the first place, and then be vague about what 'soon' meant. That doesn't make it ridiculous in the extreme though. I have sympathy for the 12+ hour days they're putting in currently, I really do, but it's insane that something they said was done MONTHS ago, and is a reasonable request from the community, is taking so long.
Unless they were lying through their teeth about the naming conventions being done, and are trying to pull them out of their butts now? Which, wouldn't entirely surprise me either. We got the same kind of thing with the housing prices and other things.
In all fairness, Koji's exact wording was "we have the naming conventions done and are fleshing out the lore behind them," so while the conventions themselves were done, the details of Au Ra society and physiology weren't; I'd like to imagine those would color peoples' choices to some degree. They've also admitted (in the Japanese version of the "they're not ready yet" post) that they have no excuse for it, but are "prioritizing the release of Heavensward" and want to have the conventions simultaneously released in all supported languages, so they're on the back burner.
(Still, the fact they have to put off a long-ish (maybe) forum post for such a long time doesn't exactly fill me with hope.)
Most people have just accepted we're getting them soon™. Not much else can be done.
Bummer, I suppose I'll have to name my Au Ra something like Kirito Sephirothh
One can't walk around Mor Dhona without bumping into 3 or 4 Kiritos. Still, I'll hold until the Au Ra hype dies off a bit to change races so that means extra time, or might not even change my name...
Sure, but why change it now? Let us suppose that naming conventions get published today (that is the 10th where I am) You change immediately and walk around with an Au Ra name for almost two weeks before 23 comes and you get the CE fantasia to change.
True if half the player base changes names at the same times it might take *gasp* a day or two before all your friends and FC members are confused about whou you are. I hope I don't come up as an inconsiderate jackass, but I don't see why this is such a huge tragedy.
What I do consider sad it that this is curentlythe most active discussion on the lore thread, even though no lore is being discussed.
Well, I'm pretty much taking a break right now since I'm not a raider and already have the best gear available to me (except a Zodiac Zeta; got burnt out on the grinding). So I'm prolly not gonna get on before EA except maybe make an Lv30 tank set for when I change to Dark Knight, lol.
I agree it's sad this is the most active Lore thread, but we've already discussed pretty much all available lore at-length (hell, several other people and I wrote a practical treatise on Au Ra physiology in the titular thread).
It's my understanding that the English naming conventions have been ready to go for quite some time, and are only being held back because they want to do a worldwide release. If this is the case, please stop punishing NA players for the incompetence of devs in other countries!
I could understand if it was in-game content, like new quests or something like that, but all releasing the NA naming conventions would do would be to allow some players to consider name changes sooner than others. There is literally nothing wrong with this, and everything wrong holding back this information when you have it ready to go.
I think incompetence is a bit of a strong word there. The FF14 staff have been working 12 hour days at the moment because it's Crunch. There is a difference between being slow and prioritising in game translations over translating web content.
Also its worth pointing out if it was a case of the Japanese naming conventions getting released before the English ones people on our side would almost certainly put up a huge stink over it.
Ehh, it's not quite so simple. If they release it in any given language before another, the people who don't have them yet will cry favoritism. Players would probably translate it for them, but might lose the spirit in translation, which is one of the key things; they want it to feel the same in every language, so they have to cross-reference it across every available language to make sure it feels the same. (Also, no using Babelfish or Google Translate. That's cheating.)
It's not so much incompetence, but the effort that goes into it we don't see.
The reason I say incompetence is that (again, this is just from my understanding of what we've been told) the NA team has apparently had these naming conventions ready to go for quite some time, and they've had to translate and localize just as much as the other language teams.
It's true that they've had the conventions themselves ready since March, but not the lore behind them. I can go and dig up the post if you like.
With that in mind, the lore behind the clans could very well color players' choices on which tribe to go with and what to name their character. Your average player doesn't really care and just goes with whatever they think is cool and/or sexy, but some people do. It's not really the names themselves holding it back (as far as we know), but information on the clans beyond the most basic of outlines of their social structures. And while Raen names have solid guesses based on in-game Domans and Yugiri ([Japanese name] [Nounverb(er)]), for all we know the Xaela have their own pseudo-language like the Sea Wolf Roegadyn.
Yeah, posting what they have would assuage the irritation of the people who it's been translated for, but it would further irritate the people who don't have it yet. While it's extremely irritating to be so close to the wire and still have nothing but gods-damn "soon™," at least everyone has "soon™" so it's fair.
That said, the post from Koji is back from mid-March, before 2.5.5 was even released. I don't think it was crunch time back then? /shrug. Either way, they've admitted they're at fault for screwing the pooch on that one, so all we can do is wait with bated breath for soon™ to come. Being upset and impatient isn't going to help.
EDIT
Here it is (with the relevant information):
Dated March 8th. My birthday, coincidentally.
It wouldn't have been crunch time but things could have easily changed and required things be redone. Do remember the game is actually launching a month slower than they originally aimed for. They won't release stuff before its set in stone and if the devs feel that narratively something had to be changed to make things work better, anything already written up and nailed down would have to be reviewed and changed. That would mean all the other translations would have to be redone as well to match.
My point is, I don't think they are delaying out of any lack of desire on their part. If its being held back it's probably because either it's not ready or they simply don't have time at the moment to get it all set up and out there.
The one caveat I'll give to the other teams, is that I'm pretty sure Koji is the one who makes up all of these naming conventions (and a lot of the lore that goes with them), so the other teams have to wait for Koji to create it, and then send it to them to translate and localize.
