This OP is a fantastic idea. All joking aside, this could truly help with alot of the DOL's issues as of late.
While only quickly browsing the forums, I really do like your idea! Thanks for posting!
Absolutely! Getting low on inventory space, I often head out without my DoL gear when I'm not doing Fieldcraft leves and just focusing on leveling my DoW/DoM... sometimes it gets a little boring going out and just gathering at times (especially since we can't fight anything). Something like this would break that tedium for me, and I'd see myself enjoying having a companion around (reminds me of Chacha and the Felynes from Monster Hunter).
I love this idea! theres so much that could be done with it too..but honestly even if all it could do is pull hate and take a couple hits it would be helpful
you could even get culinarian involved by adding in special foods for the companion that would increase its def ect
I definitely like this idea, if only because having an apkallu follow me around would be the best thing. Also, Apkallus in FFXI specialized in yawning (AoE sleep) and dancing (Frigid Shuffle, gaze paralyze), but I haven't lived long enough to see one of their techniques in XIV.
As well, someone mentioned chocobos increasing gathering stats, and that'd be cool to have, too. Just something to stave off boredom and add some depth or variety.
I love this idea!! I like to craft and this would just make it more exciting for me. I like the concept on how to obtain too.
I would take up fishing if only to have an Apkallu derping around me while I do.
Also, I think marmots would be kinda cute to have along with me while logging.
Cool idea overall and here's hopin' they add something like this.
As someone who's been leveling Botanist as one of his mains, this isn't really something I'd want to see them have. I don't believe DOL/DOH should have any offensive/defensive abilities in the means of a pet. What they need to do is fix up the eluder abilities, as it stands now each gathering guild is in each region. As a guild they should have the proper knowledge to evade any foes that prove to be dangerous.
Since I do understand what you're trying to do to make DoL more dynamic, I think a simple enough start would be this.
Revamp Eluder abilities, for DoL Botanist/Miner/Fisherman they would get
Botanist=Elude in Grida Region
Miner=Elude in ulda region
Fisherman=Elude in LL region
The Eluders would range from I-VI and I believe it should go 1-15/16-30/31-45/46-50/51-65 since by the 40's we are dealing with mobs that range in the 50+ so it would only make sense to have access to Eluder VI in the 40's
As for eluders in the other 2 regions they should be GM that you can obtain in any of the three regions since logically they should all be investigating said areas.
----
As for any role in battle they should only serve as a means to support, since they do all have a unique eluder they should excel in being able to exploit said mob types since they analyze those mobs. But for the most part while it wouldn't be a game breaker to have them as a support it would make the usable if you are in need of another ally.(Mainly for dungeons)
-----
Roles in dungeons:
Now the two dungeons we got are interesting but I don't think DoL/DoH should be left out. It's easy enough to include DoL into the concept they can have unique traits to find special areas within the dungeon to unlock secret areas
Fisherman=Water holes and such for secret areas
Miners=Sense walls for hidden passages
Botanist=Studies the wildlife within dungeons to see any little oddities within the vegetation
----
As for DoH there is an easy way to include them, now it wouldn't be for every dungeons but I believe there should be "legendary workshops" where renown crafters crafted from. The dungeons that support this concept would have certain crafters that can gain something out of that dungeon. Basically how it would work is when you check a dungeon it would let you know what DoL/DoH can be used to find secret passages or obtain secret blueprints for special synths that can only be done if you have the KI.
However DoH could also unlock hidden areas through synthesizing the right materials. Which are mainly in the form of loot found within the dungeon or mysterious mobs that form around said passages that drops the items needed for the synth. The synth items in question would never serve any purpose outside the dungeon and would automatically be lost upon leaving the dungeon, but basically upon opening the passage you may find a secret chest or maybea hidden boss or perhaps. my final idea.
--------
When SE mentioned how mobs were going to drop RARE/EX items in XIV I feel that it was a bad move, there is a much better way to go about it. When I think of RARE/EX items in XIV I think of legendary items with hidden powers behind them. Basically another way to obtain skills and traits through absorbing your battle progress in the weapon and then drawing it out to gain said ability in which the weapon itself become a catalyst to customize if you liked the design. Like say you got a neat looking sword and you wanted to keep it after obtaining the ability. You could integrate the materia system in which a crafter can make the weapon as good or even better then other weapons of that rank.
But ya there are a lot of ways DoL/DoH can go, right now DoH does have materia going for it but DoL is seriously lacking something in the "be a class you can have a full experience" concept that they were going for.
While your idea is well though out just personally speaking it isn't something i'd want. I would rather have more focus on either being more accessible to be part of the dungeon experience or a support using my knowledge of the wildlife to help the fighters take down the foe. Kinda like how there are those stories where the ones with no battle experience are able to tell the ones that can fight an exploit they know of the beast they are taking down or perhaps they have an incantation that can weaken said foe to make it easier for them. That's the kind of gaming experience I would like for DoL.
but ya, on one last note another thing I was trying to contemplate is Botanist have gardens, Fishermen can have fish tanks? And I guess Miners could have refineries where they can alter the ore they obtain and change it into other ores if they have the right procedure, though it wouldn't always be successful and a tad risky, perhaps they could even create ores that can only be made in a refinery. A garden is easy enough, basically botanist would have a plot of land in which they can grow anything they can gather, this is FF so why be limited by seeds lol. For fishermen they could create exotic unique fish or perhaps the ability to obtain pearls and such through the proper breeding. As for miners they would be able to combine ores to create new ores and such.
For this I would say each one should have it's own level that can't go above the classes current rank. So baiscally as Botanist, you would switch to Focus "Gardener" in which you would obtain skill points while you garden, instead of it being based on RL I would moreso integrate a point system like those popular browser games where you have a certain amount of points and obtain a few every few hours like anime/guardian aspect.
Basically they would be given options to care for their creation and each material in question would take a certain amount of "time" to mature, Each move you do would use up points and spend a certain amount of time. Basically the idea I"m trying to convey is that it wouldn't discourage those that may not always have time to do it to lose out on their progress if they couldn't get online or fail because a VU/maintinence went on when they needed to be on. It's basically a concept so casuals can do it without being stressed but hardcore can also do as well, they'll just be able to be more on ball of their points and use them all up while casuals may reach their capped points saved up so they won't always use all their points.
But ya those are just all my random ideas for DoL/DoH sorry if I hijacked your thread a tad but though you might find some of these ideas interesting, while I'm sure a lot of them are scattered about if I only knew what SE had planned for these disciplines it would be a lot easier to give them ideas or at least understand what they are going for lol.
Wow, wall of text?
They would definitely have to ensure that these pets would not be able to act as offensive weapons but simply something to distract the enemy while you either escape or finish up your node. We've been asking for sneak/invis and/or better stealth tools. This is the perfect idea to give us our "stealth tool" while at the same time doing something completely new.
I want a gathering companion, and I want it to b the mining brother's little sister.
Thank you for the support on this subject everyone. I would also advise you to read my topic on the guardians, I think alot of y'all would enjoy the suggestion and the fan fiction lore!
Would love to see DoL become pet classes. I'm not even against them being able to participate in battling, beacuse if it makes these classes more dynamic - why not?
this is an awsome and cute idea, i love it and never thought about it myself
i love the idea!! :D and by the way i hope in the future make fishing more fun... i want to fight with the fish.. i hate just push enter for a lot of time till i get the fish... i think the ffxi sistem fishing was great and can be better ;)
I'd only want this if the pet ends up strong enough to actually defend you -- at that point, they become great assets and open up the pet job mechanic.
That aside, if they just suck or give weird stat bonuses or something, i don't see the point.
OP gave dev's a really good idea, use it!
I actually really like this idea of DoL having pets. I think it would be really fun! I hope the dev's read this post.
As a person who plays BTN as a Main class, I feel this could bring some great things to the gathering classes.
-Pet would serve to break up tedium
-Pet could have an inventory to hold gathered items
-Pet could open up Gathering Specific Storylines
Most important to note is SE is currently trying to figure out how to incorporate Pet Classes and Mount Raising into this game. This kind of idea could serve to fill that Pet Class and Raising aspects. If you allow users to raise their chosen pet and manipulate their stats and abilities it could become a whole new source of game play.
Good idea Kiote with the companions being able to carry items as well!
I LOVE this idea.
I also don't understand what you mean by that Deceptistar?
However if it's a solution to prevent easier content, then it's simple, just make it harder...
(Here's a few examples)
1.) Requirements and Restrictions:
-Gathering Companion will not work for you unless you give them items, that must be gathered from a specific location as requested from it.
-Must receive a set number of "Approvals" from it. "You've done well" or "Thanks for the food"
-Player must give "praise" (*the command already exists: /Tell <monster name> "Thank You")
-Before reaching rank 50 a Companion Does Not Completely Trust (you).
-Do Not harm or kill monsters the same types as gathering companion; meaning using any offense abilities or switch to DoW/DoM then attacking. gathering companion will take offense.
-It will not listen, It will not help, and It will only do what it wants; this leads to mischief and troubling situations (but that's interesting in it's own way.)
2.) Cute DoL Familliars? It all depends on a persons idea of cuteness, to me I'd say Spriggans and Goobues are cute. (*there teeth are my favor :) ). So for gathering companions I then thought "Why make difference between the strong or the weak for DoL?"
Why not from the very start rank 1 give a quest that requires gathering players to verge into a dangerous area to gather an item, then the quest soon leads to a companion, however, it turns out that your potential partner is a Boss Level Monster! (I can imagine the look on the character's faces as it the cute-beast roars and we (players) think "This is my gathering companion!?!? "Is this Cute?" and I can't tame this thing!!" ... of course you can't ... for we are DoL gatherers not fighters. However the quest doesn't just lead to an impossible mission, it takes pity on you ... the monster soon after choosing to watch over you and follow you, it wants to see how such a being (gatherers) tries to survive in the untamed land of Eorzea. This could make "Gathering Companions" special and unique and harder.
To all DoLs "Gain the Trust of a Strong Companion or the Weakest" "However it should still take some skill to be there friends ether way." [*and you'll probably get mangled a few times when missing up.]
I'de like to see pets in this game in general, the OP has a really good idea with an interesting spin on pets.. something to fight off mob aggro while gathering.. makes sense!
Bumping this 'cause I think it's an amazing idea that so far has nothing but positive support. C'mon Bayohne, pass this one on!
2 thoughts:
We have the fisherman hat, but no botany or miner gear? We need to at least start there.
And while I love gathering companions, what sould happen if the spriggan got in the way of your axe swing?
Has anyone done an Animal Listing yet? I believe Funguar would fit Botanist also and Moles fit Miner, also Jellyfish for Fisher, and so much more....
Yes! Would be great if your companion would react to your gathering and such -- hop around or seemingly happy if you successfully get something, looks down and sighs if you don't, starts running around when it notices aggro nearby, sits when you sit (seriously one of the reasons I loved puppetmaster), etc.
The option to befriend specific types of companions within that DoL type would be great too =)
This is just too awesome...come on SE you know you'd dig it too ;)
Posting again for bump xD
Anyway.. expanding on previous post, a list of pets you can choose from sounds awesome! now you would not see everyone with the same pet of course!.
Id like to point out that sneak/inv like abilities has already been confirmed for DoL classes. The pet would still be useful for gathering though, expanding on gameplay elements as has been stated many many times before in this thread ;p
Specific gear for gatherers sounds really nice too!.
As a miner myself, i can see moles being a fairly attractive pet. I dont know if i think something "cute" works so much for miner as it does for the other two. I'm not all that keen on spriggans. Marmots maybe? Tho i guess they probably fit Botanist a bit more than miner.
bump
We want the devs to see this.
This is a brilliant idea! I'd love to have a companion pet while I roam the fields, gathering.
Ack, anything but moles! lol. As a mage too I have declared them to be my character's mortal enemies. :p
For miners I like the Spriggan idea, or how about Coblyns? Back when they had follow behavior I thought it was so neat to have one looking all interested in whatever I was mining.
Apkallu sound perfect for fishers. They even throw fish as one of their battle moves. xD Aurelia might be nice too.
This is a marvellous idea. Perhaps the skills on DoL for finding nodes can even be transferred to be an ability of these pets or perhaps they're the ones to tell you that they sense x item below or above where you're gathering.
bump ,read this!
