That is from Xbox.com, from the head of the crossplay division at Microsoft. But sure, I'm wrong.

Here's a recent Article for you. It's all down to Microsoft (and Nintendo) to be open to cross world servers -nothing private that isolates one platform- so regardless of the platform, everyone can play together.

Considering that Sony is being a big baby about Crossplay I wouldn't expect it on anything else.
That is actually the head of ID@xbox (independent developers publishing their games on xbox live). He's not the head of the crossplay division. That would be Phil Spencer. Either way, the article you linked just confirms that they never said that they didn't want to do crossplatform. Saying that players will always have the choice to play within the Xbox ecosystem for the then current lineup is a given. That's basically them saying don't worry, you won't forcibly be put in FPS lobbies with mouse users for example. Nowhere do they categorically say: "No we don't want you to be playing with PS4 users". Again, in the 3 years that followed that article, several games launched with cross console multiplayer.
What I was referring to is this https://www.polygon.com/e3/2016/6/17...rosoft-e3-2016 A quote which is in hindsight, pretty disingenuous on their part.
I know what you're saying. But what I'm saying is that those restrictions do not exist with the other games. Those restrictions only exist on the PS4. For example, Rocket League on PS4 was/is the only platform that couldn't play with other consoles because Sony didn't want them. Sony being extremely close minded when it comes to crossplay is common knowledge by now. So I'm asking you, what is more likely? Microsoft refusing to let other consoles mingle with theirs on FFXIV when they're fine doing just that with every other games, or Sony actually being the ones blocking the whole thing like they've done with every other games?
And what do all of those xbox cross platform games that require xbox live to play have? That's right, option for xbox exclusive servers so xbox players can play only with other xbox players if they want, which is one of the guarantees xbox promises for xbox live subscribers. Yoshi has said flat out that he will not support that since he doesn't want to split the community.
OK, but that wasn't the point I was making. The point is microsoft also requires Xbox only servers, in addition to crossplay functionality. You can't have crossplay on Xbox without Xbox only servers. What sony is or isn't saying doesn't matter in this case, because SE will not put the game on a system that requires its own servers. It's all or nothing.
That's actually entirely up to the developers. You know what those games also have in common? The total absence of the PS4 in the crossplay lobbies, again, at Sony's request. I mean come on, you can log in xbox live on your switch ffs, let's stop acting like it's Microsoft that's being stingy when it comes to FFXIV.
That would certainly be something. A possibility for more numbers to our playerbase always gets me excited.
I am looking forward to the Nintendo Switch making it's leap over to Eorzea, so i would imagine that further partnerships are destined to occur at some point. :)
