Viera Race "Confirmed" for 5.0! Are you gonna change races?

What Yoshi-P thinks has shown to be very important. He was the one saying all those years ago blue mage would be impossible as a normal job, and that he would do it as a solo job. He's the one who started to talk in interviews after Heavensward about how he was thinking SAM as tank didn't make sense and that it should DPS. Previously they had said it almost was the tank job for Heavensward, meaning the team wanted or at least didn't mind SAM as tank.

This is probably my biggest fear. Yoshi-P seems to be okay with genderlocking Viera because the men weren't 'beast-like' enough for his taste. A part of me wants to think maybe he got that itch with male aura instead and perhaps changed his mind on male Viera.
Whatever it is, I do hope the dev team fought for no genderlocking. However, if we had two genderlocked races I feel like there would've been more hints to something to come beside Viera. Like, the big reveal wouldn't just be Fran but alongside her with someone else too. Having a second race show up would be so out in the long field and somewhat misleading.

Have we gotten any lore hints on a lion race?

Yeah this has me kinda nervous lol. I'm trying to be patient since the next fanfest is this weekend, but GDI. Knowing how some guys (including apparently Yoshida) are when it comes to something like this makes me feel like we're setting ourselves up for disappointment by hoping for a neat looking male version of this race. I'm just trying to put the worst case scenario (for me) in my mind so that I won't be too disappointed if it turns out they do something like genderlocking or making them all "lion-like."

I'm just trying to look on the bright-side of making them look leonine or having a leonine race as a means of having extra-fabulous hair.

They already showed male Viera once before in the form of concept art, so you can bet they are going to use what was shown previously and include both female and male, they wont add only female.

Making a gender-exclusive race now undermines previous gender-locked races. They have artwork of males and if the patch cycle is any indication, SE will keep to the cycle of keeping things like Miqo'te and Roegadyn. There'll be both genders.

Most of Fran's model is ripped from FFXII, and uses a messy hybrid of the female midlander and miqo'te skeletons. She's as much a placeholder as Yugiri was in ARR.

That's all covered in the quotes that Beckett posted. They don't vanish into thin air, they are 'adopted' by the adult males on the rare occasions that they come to the village.

It might be this very fact that is bugging some people. She's such a direct rip that in some ways she seems to be an older lower quality 3D model built for a prior era. Her polygons might be out of place here... I'm not sure though, I didn't play the prior game. But I do see that seems 'off' of the standard look I see in FFXIV.

I think that's even a higher percentage than the percentage of people here that play Ro or Elezen (not sure on that though).

It's pretty common for people to play things that either look familiar to them or look cute. No matter how reprehensible. The Blood Elves of WoW were quite popular when they came out - though for the first year they were in that game they survived by devouring the souls of others, and kept a 'being of the light' as a slave to power their magic. Most players ignored that lore with amazing levels of willful blindness and RPers would describe themselves as 'good' based purely on the physical appearance of their toons... (and judging goodness by that standard is something that the 1940s-1960s basically proved to the world as the near definition of evil).

My point was really to show another game where the 'furry' concept was a success... and I didn't have much more of a point AT THAT TIME...

But now that we're here...

13% is a lot of a playerbase to get for a race that looks like a monster. You've got these horribly huge beasts with cat heads, giant fangs, massive claws, four horns, taloned feet, and advanced technology in a world were almost everyone else is using 'stone knives and bearskin rugs' (The Asura - the deep earth guys, have sci-fi tech, as the only people more advanced than Charr. But the Charr tech all looks like stuff you could make in your garage is someone was poking you with a cattle prod while you were making it - it's mostly realistic, but harsh). But then they just have this amazingly deep pile of lore to them built around overcoming the adversity of being driven out of their sacred homeland by the humans, being overcome by a xenophobic religious cult, breaking free of that, fighting to take back their lands, and then stepping up alongside the very people that worked so hard to destroy them in past centuries that they were willing to sink an entire continent just to prevent the Charr from 'despoiling it'... And the game just keeps dropping lore for them. A lot like here actually - the more you play the more you get rewarded with that lore.

All of which is to say... they could easily repeat that here with any of the beast tribes.

Many of whom are nowhere near as monstrous. Imagine if the Beast Tribe they gave us as a PC option was the Gnath or the Ixal. That's still more 'cuddly' than many a Charr (they did add a cute kitty face later on with one living story NPC).

The races we do have here, they are all amazingly similar. So much so that it actually surprises me that Ro and Elezen are so underplayed. Then again they don't do much to explore the lore of the races here. The cities yes, but the races only in fragments.

The lore we already have from Fran, is almost the equal of the amount of lore we have for the Elezen...

ps: yes... lore wise Guild Wars is my favorite of all the modern MMOs. Gameplay wise I've gotten dissillusioned... but yeah my love of their lore gets the best of me from time to time.

Elezen have awkward proportions and animations) to the dev's desired aesthetic for the game (like how Butts where changed in the move to ARR so that they could put as lil work as possible into designing gear that goes on everyone). Either way a culture that seems to adore the cute has become the most noticeable and as such races that don't look traditionally cute are far less played.

Could they make a popular Beastly Race? Of course, it takes effort and all but it can be done if their know the target player base. Will that ever happen? I'm sure it wont. I'm just pleased that they seem to know that they have to push for super high heels for these Bunny People and if the concept and Fran are any indicator they seem to want to put some butt into them. I don't see them making a non-human based race like the Charr when they can't even be bothered to put in tail holes.

We just know that they apparently still live in caves... somewhere... except for the ones who've taken up banditry who are 90% of the NPCs we meet.

The lorebook has some brief "details" (eg. food and crafts) but nothing big-picture.

Character choice comes down to the things you can put up with versus the things you like! I have a male Duskwight and female Roegadyn alt, plus a male Au Ra, so odd proportions all round... but that also makes them interesting, and I like their faces. Gear also makes a big difference.

I feel like it's partly down to the character selection screen as well - some of the default character designs just don't look that nice compared to how they can look if you play around with the settings, and the straight-on default camera view can look awful compared to an angled view of the same character. I wouldn't have picked any of my characters based on their default appearances, but "found" them by experimenting with all the races whether I thought I liked them or not.

If the devs can afford to design the third job this expansion in a way that almost no one plays it after a week, it probably wouldn't be a problem for them to design races that don't immediately become the most popular.

I'm not a fan of how long the ears are... maybe if there was a bent ear option? or a slider for the ears? granted the slider probably wouldn't get the tip of the ears near the head....

Yeah, my friend is the one who sent me the video, and told me that gunblade or whatever he called it would be a tank (glad about that). Apparently, no word about males yet he said.

I was hoping to see what they looked like as well, I never thought I would play them though. If I play a male character its 10 times out of 10 a human. Just wanted to see if they look cool for what they are.

In all fairness, that's how they've always looked. Viera are wiry, cold, and aloof. That only breaks if there's enough Mist to drive them berserk.

Exact reason I don't play midlander. I cannot stand their run animation.

I thought they would be more like elezen and less like miqo'te to be fair as well.

I'm reserving my judgement until we get our hands on the benchmark and the character creation in it.

I will admit that I am glad we're getting them. I would rather get them than not have them at all.

They look amazing. You know it's never going to be easy to please everyone. The features, animations and overall look seems very very nice. I was pretty concerned about their animations overall but they've shown a good number in the teaser trailer and they all look awesome. I'm going to have a hard time deciding which of my alts it going Viera. I will probably have two of them fantasia I suspect.
