Is it, though? It just looks like propaganda for the sake of spreading intolerance to me and has nothing to do with Sena's voice acting work. I just checked out Sweet Baby's website and FFXIV is not listed there as one of their "projects." Alan Wake 2, God of War Ragnarok and Spiderman 2 are, though (as well as "that game" that made Sweet Baby infamous in the first place, though it was really because of a Streisand effect). I doubt they have control over who SE can hire for voice acting.
They most likely don't. They're a consultancy firm whose job is to make sure you don't accidentally do a bigotry in your game. That's literally it. Chuds are acting like SBI are literally Satan and and singlehandedly responsible for some games being bad. It would be hilarious if it weren't so sad.
Then you might want to read better. None of what I said has anything to do with intolerance. But from the recent scandals that broke about this, it certainly looks like it 'COULD' have caused this. They're clearly talking about using Intimidation tactics you should do with the marketing team to get your way. That doesn't sound like pure 'consultancy' to me. That talk I linked, is from the CEO of Sweet Baby Inc, miss Kim Belair herself
Now if you kept up, you know Square did show off in their recent stream that they partnered up with Microsoft/Xbox. (Unless that kind of news is also propaganda?) And that journalist showed, that Microsoft requires the hiring of a DEI consultancy group/Sweet Baby inc. And sure enough, Square Enix is in SBI's their client list. So so far, it's on track following the logic.
Sweet Baby Inc mostly lists the games they've worked with/on from the start. However there are plenty more unlisted projects where their writers are listed in the credits. Nor are they the only consultancy group out there. But it IS the one that's been caught publically boasting about using intimidation tactics. Hence it's relevance.
Now never once did I state this as definitive. But when you have so many red flags, there is at least a likelyhood. That's all I'm stating.
Because many have found it odd that an English studio, went out of their way to hire an north American, to do a South American accent.
And many have also rightfully pointed out that by Sena Bryer's own logic which she has openly expressed on twitter. That she's doing something she's highly against herself. If she thinks woman aren't allowed to voice trans characters, then why is she voicing a woman's voice?
Now mind you, I personally don't have anything against that. Acting per definition, is pretending to be a different person after all. Nothing wrong if they do it well. And not once in this thread have I stated the fault to lay with her, but rather the hiring company itself.
Considering how I'd never heard about any sizeable backlash for any other voice performers in FF14, I had assumed that it wasn't a coincidence that the only such backlash was towards a trans performer. But I play with Japanese voices so I never heard her English voice.
Until I did. My spouse finally played through the Wuk Lamat stuff and I had the opportunity to hear Wuk Lamat's English voice, and I was honestly startled...because Wuk Lamat's voice acting is easily in the top 20% of the English game's voice acting. Is it great compared to the acting in Baldur's Gate 3? Nope. But compared to the majority of the English voice-acting in FF14, it's hands-down a homerun.
The idea that any person who can tolerate the Scions' flat droning delivery would find Wuk Lamat's acting so bad as to be worth campaigning against is so backwards that there's really no way to make sense of it without asking the question, "Okay, but what is this really about?" And once that question is asked, the answer is transparent.
And in case you really think "I'm" the one spreading hate bait propaganda. You can read the messages from one of their main writers Chris Kindred for yourself, who's part of the Sweet Baby Inc team.

This is still omitting everytime they've been throwing around the N word. We're on the same team here. I am absolutely against intolerance. Everyone should be welcome to gaming. But don't make it forced.
Then you missed out on the people complaining about the Scions voice acting at the start of 2.0. And how a lot of people agreed the voice acting got better afterwards when they got replaced. Stop trying so hard to make it about transphobia. Nobody cares. If you think it was a stellar performance, that's great. It's good to enjoy something.
A lot of people in this thread seem to disagree, but that shouldn't take away from your experience of the game. Nor does it invalidate our opinion.
Considering the hate toward Sweet Baby first started on a certain "farm" forum (intentionally vague here. It's where the worst kind of people go), that's why I say propaganda.
And this is also why I say it has nothing to do with Sena's voice acting work in FFXIV.
This is actually untrue. I did check it out because I was curious myself, too. But that thread was slow since October, and barely made it to page 7 before this all started. Mostly just talking about Alan Wake 2 at that point before this all started off. By all means, this is just one website that happened to talk about it in 1 small thread. Unless simply talking about it is a crime, this site has nothing to do with where the 'hate' started. Though I've certainly seen Chris trying to blame that site to make it seem they didn't start it.
Heck, it didn't even start with the curator group either. Cause they started in January, and JUST listed the games for the people who cared. Much like some do for the DRM Denuvo, or how your food has an ingredient list in case you're allergic. It barely had 10k subscribers before it hit off.
It was when Chris Kindred, the guy that I just showed the twitter posts off. Writer of the Sweet Baby Inc group, started their own harassment campaign towards the curator group, and trying to get the curator banned. This started End february, starting March
This is why a timeline is important.
Having recently come back... the voice acting is jarring for this character in the trailers. On the other hand I watch most shows in their native languages so not sure why I did the dub versus the sub on FFXIV (probably because when I started a decade or so ago I generally watched dubs- whenever the .3 of ARR was).
That being said I know nothing about the VA, and have nothing against her. Just because a voice doesn't work *for me* doesn't mean she did a bad job, just I really didn't jive with the trailer or anything else (though to be far some other voices have become slightly annoying to me too in game).
Edit: Oh nice the Japanese VA was Carla in the latest Armored Core. Love that game and love me some Carla. But I can not emphasize enough- nothing against the English VA. From her twitter (hadn't checked it before today) it seems like she does a lot of work to help out others who are trans/non binary and she has an impressive resume of works before this. Wishing her nothing but success as well!
This was my understanding as well: SBI got their collective panties in a twist because of group on Steam making list of their projects with less than positive motive, aka helping people to avoid games they had been involved with. I think this is entirely within the rights of consumer. And then they tried to have the group's founder banned; I am console rat, so the heck I know, but isn't there side implication that if the guy would have been banned he would have lost all the games he bought by Steam?
Now, I haven't followed this situation too closely, but neither have I ignored it. I feel like seeing and listening people to talk their mind gives most of the time pretty good window into their thoughts, so at least I tried to find some videos of Belair talking about her work. I just wanted to find the whole context to her "go to marketing and twist their wrist a little" and "babypigs" comments. Didn't find everything I was looking for, but heard and saw enough to help me form my own first impression of her and her company. It's less than positive opinion now.
Summa summarum, in context of this thread's topic; I haven't seen anything what would point towards Bryer being hired having anything to do with DEI stuff directly. I also think it would be naive to hard dismiss the possibility with Microsoft link and SBI link, to SE, provably there. Even if it's by other projects than FFXIV. I think these things absolutely can be so squiggly that SE could get some benefit they see worthwhile by doing some diversity hiring for any of their projects. It's just business, come on...
And even then, then what? Well, if the proof of nepotism will be found and proven, I won't be surprised. All I can do is speak with my words and vote with my wallet.
I am not fan of Bryer's work in and with FFXIV, or some pretty lame opinions she has seen important enough to broadcast in X. But I want her and her fans to continue living their best lives. I don't play with audio on most of the time anyway.
I wish I could upvote your post more than once.
Just read up on Steams ban system, from what I understand they would just restrict parts of the account. https://help.steampowered.com/en/faq...35F9-F395-5C23
This is about correct. Now whether he would've actually lost his games or not aside, it seems like he would've been restricted from community features. However, it is clear by Chris's post that I posted earlier, that at least HE hoped it would affect his gaming library. Which just shows a toxic vindictiveness.
I applaud you for doing your own research. I just try to provide what I can since most people do not have the time. And it beats the people blindly sticking their head in the sand throwing more buzzwords at it. I've also decided to finally post some of the twitter links of Chris Kindred's further racist behavior on twitter. And I do have one of the posts of another SBI employee they posted in the steam curator forums before they got closed down. (They were semi-succesful. But the curator group lives on)
A big issue here too is, that whilst you're a 'console rat,' they've just been behaving like rats. Scrubbing the internet, locking their accounts, hiding their tweets. And getting a lot of gaming journalists to cover for them by omitting parts of the story that make them look bad. (Not even just gaming journalist... this is a continuously evolving story. And a lot of people are doing their best to archive tweets and evidence of involvement. And illegal blacklist activity, etc)
Yeah, I've no direct links. But certainly a lot of red flags that, as you said. "It would be naive and hard to dismiss the possibility."
As I stated many times in this thread. I do not put the fault on Bryer. I'm just annoyed at people on the internet gaslighting people like you can see even in this thread, and wanted to find out the truth. What people do what that information is ultimately up to each individual themselves. I'm not here to tell anyone what to do. "You don't pay my sub" kinda attitude.
It's just sad, but not too surprising to see. Having followed Square since the psx days, this to me seems like Square is having a rough financial time. As all the signs are repeated from their historical Big project failures. (Spirits Within, Final Fantasy XIV 1.0, now Forespoken.)
And mind you, this isn't THE reason for my own break/quitting either. I've got so much reasons I could start my own thread. I've had my love for XIV dwindling for the last 4 years with all the simplifications and single player focus, jobs that got neutered to a 2 minute meta so people barely need to talk even within raids anymore. I play XIV for the social experience and glamour, and most of that is gone or moved to the cash shop. I'm still waiting to see for the press tour to see if they fix the Astrologian, and if that can change my mind.
It's just about enough for me to say; I've played since 1.0, I think I've had my best times with it. And with how XIV is made, I don't feel too bad for taking a break that I 'might' not come back from unless shit gets sorted. My only sunk cost fallacy is the housing, which I've left behind before for personal reasons.
Heh, yeah. I agree with you there.
Glad to be of service o7
It's the people like you that I do this for. As there's been so many great contributors to this thread with interesting and valid opinions. And of course people may disagree, to each their own. I'm not trying to invalidate other people's experiences. But the gaslighting and trying to invalidate ours, just shows the amounts of bad faith. And why the reddit totalitarian mod team has been so hard handed in making over hours deleting any evidence of criticism.
As someone who spend about a 3rd of their life on this game, it's not weird to want to know what's going on. And a forum should be one of the highest forms of discussion and enlightenment in the world. Things may get heated, things might even get vile. But in the end of the day, words are just words. And we stand to learn a lot from them. Even ones we disagree with.
Yes, you have nothing against her. You just want to push a conspiracy theory and try and tarnish her reputation. Nothing against her, right? Taking this thread so far off the rails and turning it into your conspiracy theory bully pulpit to rage against DEI.
Also, please learn what nepotism really is. When there isn't an open casting call (and to my knowledge SE has never done one for FFXIV), then casting is done via pared down recommendations. Casting directors will send out role requirements to one or more agencies/firms, and get a list of potentials for auditions. Then, whoever does casting for the localization team, does the auditions and hires. It's not nepotism just because you don't like one of those possible firms.
Seeing this thread, I now know why the forum mods, community reps, and dev team abandoned the EN forums. (ㆆ _ ㆆ)
Oh hey, you said more than just buzzwords for once. Go you.
I like how you've gone from straight "Transphobia!" and "Conspiracy!", to slowly admitting more of this is true though.
I said these are the links to what could've likely happened. And what people have suspected of being nepotism. No need to assign me with ill and toxic accusations, when you clearly don't know me. Straw manning and ad hominem attacks mostly makes You look bad.
An account where 24 of its 29 post are on this thread and the remaining 5 are from 2019 and before. You couldn't even be bothered to post on this character during covid.
I personally don't get the appeal of multi-accounting on the forums but to each their own I suppose. ꉂ (´∀`)ʱªʱªʱª
This looks more like something that belongs in the BG3 Steam forums. Blaming Sweet Baby Inc. for the Final Days? Another thread about not liking some woman's voice because (insert whatever borderline sexist reason here) and demanding SE immediately fire her?
Good gravy.
Yeah, nobody is asking for her to get fired. But she's certainly been advocating for other woman to get fired for doing what she's doing. Sweet irony.
But these children don't know how to use forums and keep going for personal attacks instead of engaging, to derail the conversation. Lets keep these facts up here for sane people to learn about ♥
They can keep sticking their heads in the sand throwing ists and phobes slurs at people. 9 outta 10 times it's just self deflection any way.
And now all you're doing is trying to play the victim for being called out on your bigoted conspiracy theory junk.
Now who's using buzzwords? (◍´͈ꈊ`͈◍)
ya ya, more buzzwords. Get back to me when you learn proper English and know how to discuss like a grown up.
Quite a bit ago, also less than 1% of this thread.
Oh, you actually replied... sortoff. Try laying actually arguing the arguments.
That would imply I take you and the arguments seriously. (◉‿◉)
Lord knows the devs clearly don't, so why should I? ( ♡´艸`)
