I really hope they see this but many things were already in the benchmark and people asked them to fix and...they didn't. Also the promise of the characters lookint the same but they didn't deliver it at all...

Agreed. You can see a clear difference in the proportions in one of my previous posts, especially in the gifs.
Thanks, I'll take a look! I've already made 2 posts in this thread going over some specific changes to face 1, so feel free to use the info there for your own feedback purposes if you want. My next steps are collecting more photo comparisons for the nose and mouth, as well as errors in our new facial animations, and then I'll consolidate everything and make a post on the JP thread myself.
I'd also like to take a moment to appreciate just how terribly my catboy's portrait translated in the new lighting lol.
Behold:

And still, you can see the way his face has changed, from his jawline, to the shape and curve of his lips, to the shape of his nose (it lost the smooth feline slope it had previously), to the thickness and position of his eyebrows... Small things, individually, that combine to create a different face altogether.
I was initially going to reply to a comment about this in the Face 1 ♂ Miqo'te thread, but this is more general and I want to pretend I'm a little more organized than I actually am, so I'll comment here instead.
But the more I look at all of the races, the more eye color and eye shading has been bothering me. In the Miqo'te thread mentioned, another user was talking about how eye color was one of the worst offenders. And...I agree, but I also felt even more bothered because male Keeper eyes are now shaded the same way female Viera eyes were shaded prior to the update. So instead male Keepers look off while female Viera (especially Veena) just look...unfortunately, broken (though there are a lot of issues with female Viera right now, too. As if opposite to the Hellsguard problem, their nose smudge is much too dark compared to before, and lacking the nice blending they had prior to 7.0).
It's such a small thing that I feel embarrassed every time I mention it, but honestly, the way eye color and shading varied between race to race was something I noticed since 2.0, and was present even on the higher fidelity 1.0 models...
For example, Hyuran eye tones are generally gentler and less bright. When Viera were added, I noticed immediately they shared the same tones as Hyur. Female Viera specifically were made with a really unique dark gradient over their eyes that gave them a more "mature" and "gentle" look, and that made their eye colors a smidge darker-looking. This was especially noticeable for Veena and their larger pupils. Instead that was replaced with a dark black line just stripped over the upper portion of their eyes with that nice gradient removed...
Now, on the other end, male Keepers were designed with pupils that reacted significantly to their eye color choice. It's on the same level as female Roegadyn. Particularly, though, since male Keeper pupils are so large, this gave them an especially bright, otherworldly look to their eyes. Female Keepers actually always had colored pupils too, but it's to a lesser extent than male Keepers. I assume this is because they're a 1.0 model and male Keepers are a 2.0 model, and they changed them to make them equivalent in the update... I get where they're coming from with that, but the impression is different enough that I actually think those differences should instead be maintained.
Elezen, Roegadyn, Au Ra, Miqo'te, and Dunesfolk (Plainsfolk had tones closer to Hyur) in general all had brighter-looking eyes before the update. In Elezen and most male Roegadyn cases, it's because their pupil colors were actually also subtly affected by their iris color (again, for female Roegadyn, that difference was actually as extreme as male Keepers, which I think should be kept). Male Roegadyn eye color is affected in the same way as female Viera for a couple of face options in the update, which surprised me--basically all the ones that got changed to have stark black pupils instead and had any gradient removed now have all their eye colors looking "whiter" than before.
Maybe the old eye designs seemed sloppy and unintentional to some, but, to me, it always felt intentional and gave the differences between races and clans a more distinct feeling. In the update, it just feels like they didn't actually pay attention to what made eyes feel the way they did, and that includes even Hyur, as you can see from many examples pointing out the problems in ♀ Midlander Face 1!
I feel like I'm asking for too much with this, but, god, I hope they actually look over it...
Sorry for the wall of text and lack of image examples. I'm just tired after all the prior attempted JP thread organizations and bug reports, unfortunately.
The issue with the lip shadow was very noticeable to me in-game, especially when light wasn't shining directly on the face but the ambient lighting was still bright enough to see clearly. I've also noticed some similar shadow forming a line on the bottom outline of the bottom lip. I think the (now irremovable) lip gloss makes it look worse by lighting up the center of the lip and creating more contrast, but that's just a guess---I can't confirm my suspicion, because I can't see the new face without the gloss.
"Drawn on", as you described the shadow later in your post, is the perfect way to describe it; I wasn't sure how to articulate exactly what looked unnatural about it, myself. Your post identifies and puts into words a number of specific changes and issues that someone might look at and think "something isn't right about this" but not know what to say about it.
The nose my face 4 female miqo'te uses, nose type 6, has always had a different shape than the other noses on this face (6 is slightly downturned, while the other noses are upturned). The shine that goes all the way up the nose looks perfectly natural on nose 6 and enhances its shape, so I thought it was one of the best additions. Before seeing your post, I hadn't noticed how the shine looks mismatched with other nose shapes of this face, but you're right. Your character's original nose had a distinct shape that was obscured in the update, and the shape of the nose shine contributed to that.
On one hand, I want my character to keep their current nose shine, or something similar to it. However, if each nose had its own fitting "shine shape", it would help make each nose look more like itself, and look more distinct from each other when the face is pointed towards the camera. (In my opinion, the more upturned noses should have the shine concentrated on the tip, while type 2, which is a straighter nose, and type 6 should retain the current shine.)
Thank you for making this post, Cheapshot. It is impressively detailed and comprehensive.
Don't know if someone has brought this up yet but something that's personally bothering me about the update is the way your character automatically lowers their eyelids a lot when looking down. Sure, it's probably more realistic and I would love to see it on occasion, but I wish there was a on/off toggle because it really changes the expression/vibe I'm looking for sometimes.
https://i.imgur.com/su6tccM.png
Not to mention how jarring it is when my character is smiling. He physically can't keep his eyes open if he smiles while looking down even slightly:

It's a very minor complaint compared to how amazing everything else looks but something like this really messes with my gposes/portraits..
https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/...97#post6514897
I filed it as a bug report in hopes they consider it a mistake and return "none" to having no gloss. I only have my one character though so I can't show any before and after of lips for different races.
If anyone else would like to reply to that thread and let them know if Dawntrail gave you permanent lip un-togglable gloss, that would be helpful.
To be honest, it's the character update that has made me wonder if I should even continue playing.
My Keeper lost the update lottery badly, and feeling like my WoL is barely even a character in this story combined with the stranger's face he has now has killed all the excitement I had for the expansion. Even when I go off to do side content to get away from the MSQ, it's not the character I made on the screen anymore. I could go finish my latest replay of the previous MSQ (or replay something else like I used to enjoy doing), but this time around my character can't even pull off the emotional intensity he used to; the update-downgrade gave him a permanently tired look and there's something weird going on with his other facial animations, too. That's all previous content that I used to love replaying gone now.
On the more vain side of things, he can't even pull off many of his hairstyles anymore since the enormous mouth has made his face too masculine for them. Same thing with some of his glams: his old face was more pretty than handsome, so I liked to put together visual kei outfits every now and then. Now I'm stuck with shades to somewhat disguise his borked eyes (doesn't really work, those cursed eyelids shine through any amount of shadow now) and hoping that the many, many cutscenes show him from the side to disguise the mouth. I was definitely one of those referenced "screenshot enthusiasts", and that's gone too now. Simply put, I don't enjoy my character anymore. In a game where a large part of the attraction is falling in love with your character(s), this is catastrophic.
So, what now? The response to the whole expansion has been disappointed enough that I'm not sure how high a priority working on character models would be for the devs. I did think it was a bad sign when they doubled down on some of the most visible changes people gave feedback on - like in my Keeper face 1 WoL's case, they actually made the sleepy expression worse by increasing the size of the eyelids even more after the first benchmark. And still I bought Dawntrail because the devs had previously earned quite a lot of my trust. I figured they'd keep adjusting things like they said and things would get better again. But now, having seen how many things need addressing in Dawntrail, I don't know.
Do I turn to mods? Are there even any for restoring old models yet? At this point it feels like getting banned for it would just be someone else ripping off the bandaid for me.
One of these characters is an upgraded version of the other one, allegedly.
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...c3c24ef75e.jpg
Some of the cutscene emotes are looking okay (once you account for all the parts of the face looking wrong) and keep giving glimmers of what the character is supposed to look like, because they're Aurelie's expressions even though they're being performed by the uncanny changeling, but then you get things like this. I know what Aurelie should be looking like in these moments that call for that warm, gentle smile, and the altered character just can't manage it at all.
It's really saddening to see a beautiful character turned to this.

Ouch your character was hit pretty hard. I still say that it is the new dynamic lightings and lighting ambience which is the culprit of most problems, which include uncanny face and washed out hair/skintone colors
New lights are just too harsh on all characters. Just compare the face when standing in shadow vs on direct sunlight or near a light source, face will be unrecognizable.
Hope the developers will continue to adjust how light affect the characters, because there is still long way to go.
I just visited area in which the umbral wind weather was and my whole character was just.. GREEN :D without any contrast
Quite similar as you, so I never entered this game since the second day of DT pre-release lol.
I miss my WoL but I can't find her in this game anymore.
And to me mod doesn't help, personally I don't want to cheat myself to feel like she's still here then continuing being the cashcow of a company just threw her away.
Thank you for putting something together about this! Maybe it can be accepted as a bug report like the post about Face 3 Midlander eyes.
I wanted to make a post myself, but I'm not sure I really have the artistic knowledge or good screenshots from before the update to show a comparison.

So, for me the update has been a double edged sword. My main Miqo'te looks AMAZING and i am happy, but my Viera looks way different.
I really hope the link works, its my first time posting on here, so i am unsure how to upload images properly. . I had it so EW version is on top and DT version is on bottom. To me her eyes look smaller and her cheeks puffier, which i really do not like.
Gonna hold off on the Fantasia. Even though I'm getting really annoyed at the hat restriction, my character did receive a marked improvement in the graphical overhaul. His eyes feel a lot more alive and also preserve his resting bitch face. I just need some real eyebrows.

I'm sorry to hear that, it really doesn't feel nice. Some of the changes they made are baffling after all those demos where they made it seem like it's really just an upgrade of existing models.
And that's true about the mod. It would pretty much be just a bandage that doesn't fix the real problem.
But it's still early, so I guess I'll wait a little to see what happens.
The more i see my toon in different situations, the more defects and other mess i discover. xD Jesus, did really nobody look at the new characters?

Hello, sorry to bother you with a question like this. i had some images I was wanting to post to show how my Viera changed. how did you manage to upload yours? I tried using an imgur link but it didnt work

After progressing through msq and seeing my main in different environments I'd say that overall my boy looks pretty good when he's got a neutral face going on but Im noticing his eyes no longer properly close in some emotes ? This isn't him mid blink, its from a cutscene where he shuts his eyes to think of a response.
Dunno if its a bug or a consequence of the new bones/morphs and him using the downturned eye option but his occasional stoner squints are funnybad.
Hey o/
It's just me or female Miqo'te eyes don't look at the same direction ? Didn't notice it before 7.0 but now i can't unsee it... It's look more noticable on moon Miqo'te.
I already post a bug report on french forums but they move it to "Working as Intended" ^^'
Did you know if there is any way to ask devs for a patch ? I don't wan't to fantasia my character but i don't wan't to see her like that !

Her face feels completely different to me! I used a fantasia to switch to Viera, but it's just not the same. I miss my wonderful highlander girl.
I know others have mentioned concerns about their expressions seeming off so I wanted to add that there seems to be less variety between some of the emotes now. I'm not sure if this is just an issue for face 3 Viera males but the expressions Simper and Beam now look completely the same. Before, the Beam emote would make my character's eyes widen and his eyebrows would raise a bit which made his expression look sweet and kind. As you can see from these comparison pics there's barely a difference anymore and they both just look the same.

I have some requests regarding male Highlander face 4 after noticing changes in my character with the new graphics update. A lot of my feedback overlaps what I said in the updated benchmark thread: https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/...89#post6484989
Face Type: 4
Jaw: Type 3
Eye: Type 3
Brow: Type: 1 in 6.5 and earlier, Type 3 in 7.0
Nose: Type: 1
Mouth: Type 3
Face 4 has gone from a gentle impression of a highlander to a much stronger one. There are prominent brow furrows in the updated graphics and they make the face feel more weary and aged. The change seems to be a combination of the new lighting and the geometry where the brow meets the nose. Harsh lighting from above and behind make the furrows especially noticeable.
Here are some examples of these furrows from some early cutscenes in Dawntrail (JP name
黄金の遺産 or use 7.0). In this first set of photos I am using eyebrow shape 3.

https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...0ae801561f.jpg
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...0675a63092.jpg
I also took some comparison shots using 6.x cutscenes. I had to revert some changes I'd made between 6.5 and 7.0 for these screenshots. In the photos below I am using eyebrow type 1.
① There is a pronounced furrow and bump at the brow. The shading is much stronger across the upper nose bridge when compared to the face from 6.5. I can see hints of the geometry used to create the updated graphics in the previous face, but I feel they have been pushed too far.
These changes gives a stronger impression of a highlander and makes the character seem more aggressive. There was some gentle shading to suggest furrows prior to 7.0, but these soft furrows did not impose such a strong and angry expression.

https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...8f0c6765a0.jpg
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...621f170e90.jpg
② There is a defined wrinkle extending from the edge of the brow down the side of the nose. This wrinkle is present regardless of lighting conditions. Prior to 7.0 this area had very soft shading that allowed you to better focus on the character's eyes.
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...30639313df.jpg
[1/2]
③ The circles under the eyes are darker and more defined. This makes him appear older and more tired. The effect is visible in all lighting conditions, but in my images from issue ① you can see that harsher lighting makes the change most noticeable.
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...f50cd93112.jpg
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...acb58c9549.jpg
④ The shape of mouth type 3 has changed. I've seen these changes discussed for other races, but the philtrum and tubercule have both been flattened. I found the curve at the center of the lip quite handsome and felt it gave his expressions a lot of personality. I miss it in the updated mouth.
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...3fbdd30bba.jpg
https://lds-img.finalfantasyxiv.com/...2fa0df4466.jpg
The lower lip was not well defined in the previous graphics and I feel the new lower lip is a good interpretation of it.
⑤ The harsh lighting from above and behind I mentioned earlier sometimes produces visual artifacts on the face. I noticed a similar phenomenon in the background when recreating some reference photos of my character. The green screen behind him is curved and now has visible bands of shading on it. It seems the new lighting engine is generating these strips of lighting on what should be smooth surfaces.

I apologize for requesting changes in the hectic period after official release, but I was very disheartened after seeing how much my character had changed. I would appreciate if you make some adjustments to Highlander face 4 based on my feedback.

Mmm…. Cardboard upper chest ? Omg…
I am crying everytime I see my WoL in screen with the new eyes... give him back his eyes... the worst it's that I am very attached to him, he is my OC even, I draw him a lot, and I have stories with him and my friend's characters for fun. And now they changed him for no reason, why would you make that eyes look dead? Just why... It makes me so sad that it takes all motivation to play from me...
Veering slightly off from the usual talk of how our characters have been altered, one thing I'd like to see in the future above most graphical improvements would be animation improvements.
Things like:
- Inverse kinematics, this would allow for things like having our characters feet actually on the ground rather than floating or sinking slightly when on hills or stairs.
- Transition animations, having our characters smoothly transition from idle to walk/run/sprint with a blended animation. Someone will likely bring up the 1.0 movement physics, but that's a separate system; it used transition animations, but it had heavy acceleration and deceleration with its movement. We don't need that here, you can still have believable transitions from idle to movement and back with the same movement physics we have now.
- Extra cloth bones, namely for capes, loose sleeves like the high summoner sleeves, scarves, etc. Bonus points if we could have the cloth bones react a little more realistically than the baked animations we have now.
I know the IK and cloth physics can be very processor heavy, especially in an MMO, but it'd be nice if they were available even if we only saw them on a handful of characters at a time.
Posting this here as well - the lip indent that came with the 7.0 update on Miqo F - Keeper of the moon characters, Face 4, is way too pronounced. It makes my character look old whenever she has direct light on her face. This was not the case before 7.0. The entire mouth area has some really weird shading to be honest, but the lip indentations are the worst.

Slightly off-topic but I opened up the Endwalker benchmark today and I was so happy to see my WoL again. I honestly missed everything about it (the scales, the detailed hair texture, the way the makeup fades, the sharper eyelashes, the smaller and more stylized eyes, the list goes on) but I miss the expressions especially :(
