For what logical reason? If someone asks for a commendation at the end of the run I give them mine. Simple as that. Maybe they want the achievments or whatever. I consider it "pathetic" to ask for commendations - for me they're something you earn by playing and behaving well, knowing your job/class, being able to adjust to the groupsetting, maybe listening to advice, being a friendly person etc. etc. Or, to sum it up: Making the run enjoyable. Its something you should earn with your actions, not by asking people to give it to you. Ofc they want the achievment, but again: that should be something they earn by their actions, not by asking for the commendation in the end (it does work without it, believe me)

Because in ruins the spirit of what commendations are.
It's just a nice bonus to give a "nice job, buddy" kind of pat on the back. Asking for them just dives headfirst into coming off as egotistic.

I'd waffle about giving someone a comm while asking for it, too.

Directly asking for a commendation just seems too egocentric. Did they forget that there were 7 other people in the battle, each of who pulled their weight?
Why does this person think they are deserving of the commendations? It sounds like "Hey, I did so well. Give me your commendation! I totally don't care about the 7 other people who also worked hard! Give ME the credit!"

It's a group effort. Not a one-man-show. Asking everyone for a commendation shows me that this person isn't considering the effort / contributions / feelings of all of the other group members.
This is why we laugh at this action and also refuse to "commend" such a person.

Some background information: We're doing Hullbreaker Isle hard mode, everything is going as normal until the tank pulls 6(?) gorillas and 1 tiger. We wipe because the tank died in the first 2 seconds of me switching to cleric stance.

There's a time gap between certain parts of the conversation, I mention the cooldowns after watching the tank during the next pull and noticing the lack of them.

I edited out all the names besides mine, so yeah.

This healer must be shit for watching their tank's stats to never notice something so... essential as their use of cooldowns.

Reminds me of this guy in my dungeon was me(tank), my FC friend (healer), Brd and a Blm; the blm was playing amazingly so at the end I was like damn man you're getting my commendation. Well, you just said that you won't give him a commendation regardless if he is even the best player in the world, just because he asked you to.

Sounds pretty unreasonable to claim to give commendations based on performance, although you won't give any commendations regardless of performance just because of a request in chat.

Pfff, yea, because commendations totally work that way in this game... it's working like this:

8 random guys: You may get a commendation or not (pure random), if you're just playing normal. You may get 1-4 commendation if you do something outstanding.
4-6 People won't give any commendation anyway (regardless how good evreyone was).

You alone and a party of 3/7 ppl who que together: You may get random 1-3/7 commendation if you play normal. Highten the chance to get up to 7 by doing something outstanding.
You can commendate one, but get 3 or 7 back... how does the ammount of commendations reflect in any way the performance here anyway?!

You have to work "hard" to get 1 out of 7 commendations, when you get grouped with such a group? Not at all, this way you might get 3 times as much commendations while playing average, as in any run with 7 pugs while doing the most awesome job of all times.

And e.g. how should a dps playing on PS4 judge which of both healers did the better job dps-, heal- and no-overheal-wise without a parser? Seems like there is much room for error here, so you shouldn't treat it as an accurate tool anyway.

Also:
You can still just say "No, playing like this, you don't deserve one." or "Sure, since you deserve it anyway."
But that seems to simple and also.. no schadenfreude. :(

Weirdest Alex whichever-one-has-Twinkle NM run last night. All ok up to Twinkle boss, which we wiped at. Me and co healer were trying our best but I think there were some new people that no one had explained anything to (tank pulled too quick) who were dropping the goop on the group and not picking off the adds quick enough. I had the snakes on me right up until I died >.<
Anyway so the weirdness ensued after the first wipe, suddenly a vote dismiss pops up for my co-healer for... "cheating"!? Like... wtf? We were trying our best I didn't see them do anything dodgy and... hmm. Somehow, it goes through and 3 of the dps leave too. So we're stood in front of Twinkle waiting for the group to fill up again, while we're waiting the good tank asks the other tank (let's call him douche canoe) if he could please swap at "x" stacks. Douche canoe refuses and says he's never needed to. I mean, okay? But it makes things a little easier for everyone? Anyway, i've only got DRK to lvl 43 so I don't know enough to input on that particular point. However he then refuses to move at all, doesn't go into bird form for boost and dies a couple of times.
Eventually we somehow make it through, then (I wish i'd taken a screenshot cause I barely believe it myself) he says "no one wants the loot right?" ... :|
WTF!?
Everyone running Alex needs the loot... well unless they're helping a friend or something but like 90% of people are either getting the best gear for their mains or the rest of their classes, no one's gonna pass especially for Douche canoe.
So, to make a point, I asked everyone else to please roll and wait. We did, had a lil dance and waited for the timer to run out remarking how bizarre this all was but having fun :) At around 60 seconds this guy gives up and rolls... and wins nothing :D
Moral of the story: don't be a douche, take your chances on loot just like everyone else is doing and please don't just point blank refuse to do things. Or at least prove that you can do the run without following any mechanics.

I'm giving my commendation based on OVERALL "performance" - that does not only include being the best player in the world, but also being nice, polite, funny, helpful, open-minded, "trying your best" (please notice that you dont have to "fullfill" all those criterias - thats more of a list of things that CAN make a player outstanding for me).
But yes, even if you left for whatever reason a good impression, you can destroy that (for me) with that simple request (just as much as smoking would destroy an overall good impression irl).
Asking for a commendation because you believe you earned it (and earned it more than the other people in your party) is pretty arrogant and specially as tank its just bad taste (we tanks get enough commendations already, without begging for them). Its specially "annoying" if the person requesting a commendation didnt said a word during the entire run - that being said: I would give my commendation to a chatty player, whos asking in a friendly manner in the end. But when "commend me plz" is all you can say... nope, nope, nope

Maybe I'm coming off as pretty "strict" here, but I believe a commendation is something you earn by playing well (whatever that means during the run - it is NOT limited to being the best player in the world); the game is asking ME if I enjoyed playing with one of my fellow partymembers and I dont "enjoy" being told "Hey, I did such an awesome job, commend me!" (arrogant) or "I want my achievment, gimme your commendation" (pathetic)

Interesting but ultimately fun run of Dzemael Darkhold last night. To start with, the tank runs off without waiting for protect. He proceeds to tank the mobs outside of the purple areas, but moves inside them when I tell him to and explain why. In the first big room, he pulls half the mobs while the rest go after the healer. He never picks the mobs off the healer so the healer dies and shortly after the tank, while my mch friend and me (monk) are waiting in the purple area for the fight to start. The tank leaves after that. He never said a word.

We decide to continue on while waiting for a new tank. I pop Fists of Earth and tank the first boss, which goes down without too much trouble. I keep aggro by staying on the boss while my friend takes the adds. Then on to the part with all the roving giant frogs. Carefully we make our way through, and miraculously we don't wipe. My friend and I both end up tanking various mobs as I do my best to at least keep them off the healer.

Second boss goes well, even though I lose aggro to my friend half way through. Monk dps is not exactly optimal when you can't make any of your positionals.

Then, the room with the band of roving skeletons. Finally, here we get a tank, who greets us cheerfully. After taking care of the mobs and activating the buttons, the tank gains a disconnect symbol over his head.... and eventually does indeed disconnect. We decide to move on while waiting for him to return, and carefully and successfully make our way to the final boss. The tank has still not returned, so we decide to kick him and see if another will join.

After waiting a few minutes, we decide to just give it a try. I slap a few marauder/lancer defensive cooldowns on my monk, warn my friend to be careful to not take aggro, and off we go. It's slow going, because my friend has to curb his dps to not get ahead of my crappy positional-less monk dps, and we have no limit break, but eventually we do get him down.

It was the healer's first run. We gave him all our comms. He had an awesome sense of humor about it all.

Darn it, I normally commend those who dispelled debuffs, stance danced, and kept everyone not just alive but healthy. And if both were outstanding, the one that greeted and was more friendly. Guess I was wrong!

This is the normal acceptable exchange in our datacenter. This person was quite an anomaly.


I'm not really sure I understand your explanation of commendation distribution system. Maybe it is too complicated for me to understand. I apologize.

But for me, it is pretty simple to decide who to give my commendation to. During the fight I just watch each player and how they move, what skills they are using, how they react to mechanics, and how they help other players.
I don't really even need to focus on them. Just doing the fight and it should be fairly obvious who is playing well and who is not.
There is no need to count DPS or heal amount. Just observing is enough.

When someone asks to receive credit for their hard work, to me, it is breaching a social boundary.
Because each person only gives 1 commendation, asking for everyone's commendation it sounds a little selfish. What gives someone the right to ask for that? Why does 1 player believe they deserve everyone's commendation instead of the other 7 players? What makes them think they outperformed everyone else?
How big can one's ego be?

I'm sorry, but this is how I feel about this behavior. It just seems very very odd to me.

Had a great Stone Vigil Normal run last night as I was leveling up my MCH. Tank disconnected at the start but the three of us decided to soldier on, almost downing the second boss before a replacement tank appeared. Spirits were high throughout and as the icing on the cake Blue Steel dropped which is pretty much the most scrumptious gun ever.

It sure would be nice if that was true. But I've gotten 0 comms for carrying an entire party before, and more than I can count for doing absolutely nothing. Or for overwriting a co-AST's AoE Balance/Arrow with AoE Ewers. In the end, I wouldn't say getting comms is any good indicator of your performance, much less the achievement.

I guess people give commendations for different reasons. Each person had their own criteria for what is deserving of a commendation. I understand and respect that.

I suppose what I should have said is "Commendations should be given based on performance." But, everyone is free to give them as they like.

But for me, I believe hard work should be rewarded and rewards should be earned.
I am the type of person who does not believe in handouts.
And, if a handout is given, I believe the receiver has an obligation to repay the deed when they are able. It's just my personality.

It takes all types to make a world.

While I wouldn't deride someone for asking, it is more of a turn off to see someone asking for commendations. Unless the run is unenjoyable, i will always commend -someone-.

If someone decides to ask, or even demand or beg for a commendation, I will not. I don't find asking for it for yourself to be something commendable.

Leveling Roulette drops me, as a lvl. 60 BLM, in Aurum Vale with a 58 DRK, 48 AST, and a 60 NIN.

Us DPS liked killing the morbol fruits, because we like finishing our stuff fast.

Then this DRK, out of the blue, calls the NIN "a fucking asshole", because apparently, we're killing these fruits on purpose, "just coz u dont get exp ur ruining for ppl trying lvl". Right.

You know, we got the party through Aurum Vale, Aurum BLOODY VALE, in roughly 25 minutes. So apparently, this constitutes "ruining for ppl trying lvl". WHATEVER THAT MEANS.

This DRK also questioned why we, as lvl. 60s, were doing Aurum Vale. Because AV isn't a dungeon in Leveling Roulette, oh no. Perish the thought!

And this NIN was just amazingly nice about being insulted for no goddamn reason at all. Even tried to get me to calm down, and gave me a comm for defending him. I'm not angry at him in the slightest, but it just sickened me to see that kind of attitude from this DRK being accepted so easily.

Yeah, seems to be it. In my country if someone is trying to praise your work and you keep saying "no, I have a lot to learn" or "I didn't do very well at all" is perceived as rude. Of course humility is important, but it's also important to have confidence in what you do and to know that it's not wrong to be praised if you did something well.

Also quite normal here if workers do a good job and the boss still doesn't seem to care, to go talk with him and show that they deserve more respect and praise because of their hard work.

I managed to get 3283 commendations without ever asking for one... so I dont think what you're saying is enterily true. There are things you can and should ask for, thats right. I dont consider commendations to be among those - they're something you earn, not something you "deserve". Maybe our concept of commendations and their meaning is different, but someone is basically saying: "PRAISE ME!" is just bad taste.

There is nothing wrong with being thankful for a commendation though or admitting that you did a good job, so I dont agree with being totally humble... but specifically asking for that "reward"... nah...

I like to compliment people and I say, "thank you," when I get a compliment because while humility is a virtue, so is gratitude.

Buy you never ask for comms. It's a faux pas. And yeah, I've never asked for comms and I'm close to 1k (been playing for a year). It has way more to do with your attitude and skill level than asking.

I will just mention, two little-known facts about that last fight: 1) the poison stacks aren't applied if the person has a shield up (stoneskin, adloquium), and 2) if someone without poison picks up a potion from a coffer, it'll cure someone else with the poison (so if it really does bug you, you can cleanse it for them).

You have to remember that the mentioned player will then "depend" of others to do it for them. They will never ever move until one person talk to them in voice chat and yell at them. Why wait until then. That player could just learn to dodge and avoid beinc called out and then come to the forums to say how they were treated.

Ah so if I try to get stoneskin on everyone or most of us before he casts the poisons that should prevent them? Good to know, thank you :) When you say someone else picks up a potion though... so that'll depend on someone having stoneskin or something first so they don't get the poison, then they pick up a potion anyway and that would cure them? i'm hoping that I never need to do that but i'd rather do something for someone than have to overly worry that they're getting stack after stack, I have dubuff ocd! lol

It's really nice to not have to deal with the poisons because of shields. Just as it is with players not dealing with their own poison buff, it is similarly annoying when the healer never cleanses the slow/whatever debuff you get when he aims at a particular player. With all the time in the world as I am about to take a large hit, many times I see the healer not do anything about it or decide they will just cure II/equivalent on me or themselves.

Unfortunately I doubt he really realised he was doing anything wrong and I didn't have the time or the inclination to offer further advice that run (feeling down a lot at the moment so don't want to risk offering advice to have someone snap at me) so without being told and me just healing him through it...yeah >.< I just hope that whoever does chose to inform him doesn't get shouted at or get the "I play how I want!" response.

Simply said if you are a lvl player in AV not killing the fruit before it hatches will give around 3 to 4k exp each of them if you kill before it gives only 400 per fruit so yeah drk was right you were wrong and didnt respect the spirit of the levelling roulette you basically killed like 100k exp for that player that needed levelling.

First. The DRK is being a dick if he just out of the blue said that. Full stop, he's a dick.

But did you consider that you just took away near 3000 exp on those fruits? By letting them become morbols, you get around 3000 exp versus 300 exp. You can make them grow and still be fast. Hit them once or have proximity aggro, kill the other stuff, kill the seedlings. So there is a reason why he was upset but that does not give him an excuse to be a dick.

I would have approached it as "pls let the fruit become seedlings for the exp". If you kept doing it, then you are being a bit of an ass but no harm done.

While lots of people dislike AV, don't make it out as if you did anyone a big blessing by being in whatever you queued for.

Right, and that certainly justifies him calling us names and insulting us when we're the whole reason that run went by so fast in the first place. Of course.

See, what you clearly haven't considered is that, with the time we saved that player, he could've gone on another Aurum Vale run afterwards, and gotten way more EXP than from the seedlings those fruits spawn.

Also, people who can't even be bothered to be polite when asking for something, won't bother asking anything at all, and only type something out to insult others, have no right to lecture others about respect or consideration.

Not to mention, the AST didn't even say anything about the fruits, and he was the lvl. 48 player. This DRK was lvl. 58. We would've been fine with killing the fruits, if they'd just bothered to ask, and be even semi-polite about it, but they didn't. DPS aren't there to be the telepathic slaves of the tank and healer.

Finally, I'm not asking for comms or even recognition for how fast that run went. I couldn't care less about that. But it looks like it's just really too much just to ask not to be called names and cussed at?
