Benchmark/Graphics Update - Show your WoL's before and after

Here's my WoL comparrison.

Left is my edit in Photoshop, middle is the Dawntrail Benchmark, and right is Endwalker. I got pretty lucky, my Warrior of Light still looks mostly like herself. I just feel there's some small tweaks that could benefit everyone. Some of the lighting is off, it really makes the model look more featureless or blurry. The lack of eye shine makes the character look sad or empty. Players from NA and JP are all making some very good comments and critiques. Technically the models are updated and improved, but there's some needed polish.

Hey YoshiP, I really dislike the changes for the posterboy warrior of light. I do not know him anymore, he looks soo different than I'm used to. I grew up with this particular face and I almost ALWAYS comes back to this settings even after I fantasia. Please I beg of you, bring back the old face that I know and love. I love the rest of the graphical update, but NOT this one. I think what's really getting to me is the eyes. In the current version, the eyes look bright and wide and show a kind of life to them; in the benchmark version, the eye shape and the way that the eyelashes angle a bit down makes her look a little more dead inside. Also the face shape/jaw looked a bit more defined in the current version vs the benchmark.


The rest of the graphics i'm seeing are great though - the details of the hairstyles, the quality of the environment in the benchmark character creator. I just wish i liked the way my character looked a little more, but it just has this different vibe right now. Maybe i'll get used to it but...

I completely agree with your feelings about the eyes. It's the same for my character and it seems to affect some people more than others. It just feels strange to see that soft glow get turned into either a piercing stare or dead gaze. I'm hoping it has to do with the lighting because in some pictures it seems completely fine.

I am absolutely in love with the update. I can't wait to see my dear WoL like this in cutscenes, gpose and so on. It's her but even more beautiful! This is 1:1 without any changes, I'll probably go lighter on the lips to give less of a makeup look.

I'm also sure this specific hairstyle has no proper highlights implemented yet, but I bet the release version will have it.

I'm really disappointed with the way the update impacted my character. I honestly feel like the older visuals (left) look much better than the newer ones (right). All the life is gone from my character's eyes. The older hair seemed much more detailed and the two color tones blended together much better with the original art. The lip shape has changed and become larger (particularly the upper lip), and the painted on eyebrows have moved to a higher location on the forehead. The chin has been shortened. The ridge of the nose has been widened. The skin tone has changed.

The quality of the lighting seems to also have taken a hit in the update as that's the same angle/location/time in both captures.

Personally I'm not a fan of sharpening up the detail on the textures for the clothing without updating the model as well, as it just highlights the low-poly nature of it even more.

I really wish you were giving us the option to use the older art assets, although I doubt that's practical. I prefer that you reduce the instances of dramatic difference, as some faces (like Highlanders) were hit very hard by the update. I went from being excited about this update to dreading it the moment I saw how my character from the last 10 years has turned out. I don't recognize the character I'm looking at any longer.

This hairstyle is bugged in the benchmark CC but I guess (hope) it will be fixed.

I play on console usually so the new pic was taken on my old dying laptop lol so it's not the best but I just wanted to see what he looked like. I'm not really sure how I feel tbh, he definitely looks different but I dont entirely hate it like I could live with it.

From browsing the thread, I think Vieras got hit the worst.

The DT lighting entirely changed the contours of his face, so much that it does not look like the same person. The spray-paint brows which were never great in the first place are no longer even close passing now.

This image right here should be the poster child for a Benchmark rework. This poor guy!

I do think there is a little issue with color coding or maybe it was an issue was in the original and have fix it in the update, And i am not talking about the lip gloss, i did post earlier in the thread picture of my main Sun and lip color was like 60-70& darker in the benchmark and i have been unsuccessful getting the same color at the moment but i haven't been trying that hard truth be told but but when lip and skin color comes together the characters can look amazing.

My main looks fine and I couldn't find anything that looks weird to me (female Miqo), except for maybe the lips being less shiny?

My alt, however, a male Viera, suffers ... a bit.

I have to point out that he uses white highlights around the eyes mixed with black eye make-up. The white highlights were supposed to make his eyes and the black eye make-up stand out more and I think it does a very good job in the live version. In the benchmark (same preview angle and environment) it goes completely wrong and he now looks like he didn't sleep in ages or something like that.. His facial features in general make him look completely different and I am very sad about this change :(

I know that the light in the character creator is a bit different than before, but it was also visible in the actual benchmark scenes too which really disappointed me...

I expected changes, so I'm not surprised to have some differences.

While I'm globally very satisfied with how my girl will look in Dawntrail, I'm a bit annoyed by the lips changes, both in shape & texture.

Her original face (Female Highlander Hyur Face 1) and features still look much better to me. I'm happy that some people enjoy this new look, but it really isn't my cup of tea. ������

The scleras definitely need to be toned down a bit, as they're too bright white and contribute to that "painted vinyl figure" feel. I've also noticed that her eyebrows have been either lightened or thinned out for some reason. Still a big fan of bringing back the persistent eye sparkle and lip gloss, if only to add interest to the face in scenes where a bright light source might not be available.

I appreciate the effort that SE put into updating the characters, regardless, and am still looking forward to playing Dawntrail.

I had no major complaints with my Elezen but my Hyur what ifs are such an improvement.

I use that face as well and I'm definitely displeased with the way the 'tattoo' makeup turned out in the update. It's extra weird because I had mine set to a darker colour that ended up looking more sheer in the update, whereas yours is light and much harsher looking. They managed to remove the darkest aspect as well as the opposite, more subtle styling. How did that even happen?

I feel like my Viera has survived the changes relatively well. I think there's some subtle changes to the width of the mouth and the position of the eyes, but nothing as drastic as the other Viera faces people have posted.

EDIT: One other thing to check! If there is another application for visuals (like Nvidia's various enhancement apps), they might be turned on for FFXIV but not for the benchmark program, and that will give totally different results. Also, certain settings in the benchmark launcher may not work correctly if drivers are not fully updated (or new settings are simply not doable on older video cards).

Also though i don't know if there is any difference but when i did use match our in-game settings it did put it in High (laptop) instead of High (desktop) for some reason and i am playing on desktop, But in the end i just put it in Maximum. then there is how or what people are using to take the screenshots and what the settings are behind that can sometime set for low quality to save space. For my self i just used steam for the screenshots

She actually turned out pretty well, and didn't change too much, so I'm pretty satisfied (the eyes aren't quite exactly the same but it's fine).
I'm not sure if I have the exact same settings, but the gamma should be the same.

As said above, this came with its own set of problems :

- The face marks are now less visible on lighter skin colors (it looks like they added some kind of transparency to it)
- The fangs are gone (see this thread for more info)
- The makeup is way less visible than before (especially when the eyes are opened as you can see with the screenshots above)

As you can see, it looks like they reduced the eyeshadow's size (Face Paint 3) and changed the color in general.

I sincerely hope they will address these issues, as they shouldn't be too hard to fix.
I also hope the best for those that were the most affected by the graphical update.

It doesn't for me. This literally looks and feels like a face 2 clone which no I don't want to have the same face as fish face (which me and my friends call it) other wise I would have picked it when I first swapped when they were introduced in the game in HW.

-Eye shape has been altered, losing the sharp edge of eye shape which I loved and the eyes appear to be staring soullessly as opposed to the pleasant resting stare that I felt with the original. There is also more prominent eye bags which I don't like as well.

- Eyes are more further apart as well as larger giving her a bug eye look compared to the sharpness I liked from before. (I tried another eye option but, she looks sleepy and not narrowed like before which is a no).

-Lips literally look like she is forever doing duck lips. And lost the sharpness of her lips overall and the lower lip looks like she has lip filler. I have tried the other ones they are just as bad. I rather liked the less glossy lip texture as well. Upper lip also lost the very sharp curve like viera did which is also not cool.

-Jaw/Cheeks looks like she got stung by a bee which I also had my friends look at the two pictures of her as well and this thing. She also lost the sharpness of the face which I am extremely sad about as well and that's what made me like face 1 so much is cuz it's similar to face 4 for the sharp face and how it's not round like 2 or 3. Her chin also lost the sharpness I liked as well and seems to be elongated as well which I am not happy about as well.

I don't want to swap to a race I don't like which is a majority of them.

New Auras are pretty cute and Face 1 looks great so Ima use that. Thank you Square enix for this much needed graphics quality update that will breathe new life into the game, i love how the new eyes look and how full of life they look as well as how easy it is to get good looking lips, and how faithful it looks to my original character. :o:o:o:o

And the worst offense, you can't see his eyelashes at all. I can't say I am happy about any of that at all. On the other hand my moon kitty looks great. But this is unacceptable.

To reiterate these quotes from what you should have read, there are people in the forum are reacting negatively to the benchmark updates rather than positive. So while yes you feel like nothing has changed which you are entitled to your opinion, you aren't playing our characters and know their identity/personality.

Overall, there is change and while yes the benchmark is not set in stone there are problems both JP and NA have brought up. If this is what they have to show then I as well as others whom express how we feel in this forum aren't happy with the changes or something seems off.

finally understood what felt off, even if i'm totally fine with the update, with the current graphics my char looks like she's in her 30 while she look in her 20 in the benchmark (and the scar being too "clean" and thinner)

... Wait, you can get away with any criticism with that argument. The fact is, the difference between the two screenshots is minimal. Unlike other characters where there are more significant changes.

You can expect a graphic change to respect the colours; not to change your character's passive expression; or not to cause glitches. But you can't expect it to respect the psychological projection you have of your character - that projection exists only in your eyes, and nowhere else.

I think this is exactly why people can't see eye to eye on this; The characters and their faces don't inherently have a distinct identity or a personality beyond what individual players ascribe to them. What you perceive in a face probably isn't what I see in that face, and it might not be what someone else reads in that same face.

There are of course some differences between the faces, but they are very broad strokes that most everyone can see, ie; slightly younger and softer looking vs. more rough or somewhat older.

No one is necessarily wrong here, but no one is objectively right either? I don't envy the devs.

I have a similar problem to yours though I've already mentioned it so I won't go on about it again, but I wanted to say -- I really like what you did with the tattoo and makeup options. I picked the same options but just for a dark smokey eye look, whereas yours is like a cool colourful gradient. Sucks that the update messed that up.

But that is one of the primary points of contention. The homogenization of the existing face options (e.g., au ra females all becoming relatively similar and cute-ish) and objective changes to distinguishing features of the (limited) pre-sets.

It's not about whether anybody else can read the detailed personality we have headcanon-ed from our characters' faces.

It's that the existing faces were/are a canvas onto which you can project certain ideas.
These ideas are obviously subjective and can go in different directions depending on the person doing the interpretation of certain features. But they are still based on those particular features nonetheless.
E.g., I don't mind if other people don't think au ra face 4 is stern and serious. Some perceive her as rather neutral. That is fair and understandable. The assessment of her perceived personality is subjective.

But you cannot, for example, deny that, her pupils are smaller now. (I don't personally mind the pupils, so the purpose of bringing them up is not to complain about them in particular. I just want to give an easy and quick example of something that has measurably been altered).
That is an objective change.
This change can lead to changes in perception in some people or not (e.g., I think smaller pupils lead to more of a harsh stare etc., others don't think so).
But no matter our interpretation, the pupil's size is different. That is just a fact.

And it's those facts we try to address.

We understand that changing the graphics will lead to some inevitable technical changes. But there is a difference between the former and actively resculpting certain features into other features (lips, nose smudges, eye shapes, etc. etc.).

So, some of what the devs did doesn't seem like mere upgrading but like consciously and actively making the decision to change established aesthetics.

And in those cases criticism is completely warranted.

I don't really agree with this sentiment because it's seems a bit all-or-nothing to me. As in, since it'll never be the case that everybody is happy nothing can really be done perfectly right, so on the flipside the current criticism is also somewhat pointless because nobody can be right or wrong.

Imagine a line and the point where everybody is happy is *somewhere* in the middle. You know roughly where it should be but not where exactly it's located.

Only because you cannot pinpoint that one perfect sweet spot doesn't mean you can't look towards the outer ends of the line and conclude that over there something isn't right and you need to move closer to the middle. You don't know how far but you know you need to move somewhat.

So imo it's better to try to at least get a little closer. That's better than saying it has no point and staying closer to the poles.
That's how I see it with features.

I completely understand that any kind of upgrade will lead to some changes. But as long as I can see that they don't actively try to remodel existing features beyond what would be needed to upscale their quality (like making convex lips concave) I can easily accept and compromise.

I can also readily accept that some people will find the new features better. I would prefer if we get more options instead of replacing old ones.

You are correct when it comes to where other peoples characters have a much more significant/drastic change compared to the ones I have with my very own I've noticed which seems very little compared to their own issues. And also agree with how there is also a psychological projection people have their characters (my own included) whether they played for long or short time frame which can also effect how people feel and react over it.


Especially towards Viera and a few other faces from the other races that changes the style/look. I feel bad for some male/female bun players especially as it is a quite difference and they are not happy with it as well. The mouth shape for elezen for certain expressions also are a issue as well among other things each race and said face for said races.

- Eyes are more further apart as well as larger giving her a bug eye look compared to the sharpness I liked from before. (I tried another eye option but, she looks sleepy and not narrowed like before which is a no).

-Lips literally look like she is forever doing duck lips. And lost the sharpness of her lips overall and the lower lip looks like she has lip filler. I have tried the other ones they are just as bad. I rather liked the less glossy lip texture as well. Upper lip also lost the very sharp curve like viera did which is also not cool.

-Jaw/Cheeks looks like she got stung by a bee which I also had my friends look at the two pictures of her as well and this thing. She also lost the sharpness of the face which I am extremely sad about as well and that's what made me like face 1 so much is cuz it's similar to face 4 for the sharp face and how it's not round like 2 or 3. Her chin also lost the sharpness I liked as well and seems to be elongated as well which I am not happy about as well.

I don't want to swap to a race I don't like which is a majority of them.

You're spot on with the changes. You're not crazy and you're character does give off a different look because of the change to make au ra more "cutesy" and some design decisions e.g. larger pupils, mouth changes, eye shape changes etc.

It really shows how the eye shape has changed e.g. smaller and the top eyelashes are less pronounced. I really dislike the large pupils too. They've been made to look more "cutesy" which is why some people have trouble spotting the differences - either because they've not used that face before or they're somehow face blind.

Dang, I love the new look. Eyes are striking... But there is still this weird "de-aged" look that is quite problematic. Of all the screens, this is the problem that comes up most often in the end.

Oh, I'm not saying there are 0 changes beyond people's own perception of the faces, I have posted my own feedback both in this thread and the Viera thread! There definitely are issues, mouths especially seem pretty universally scuffed on every race and gender.

People that have an issue should absolutely post their feedback and try their best to highlight what the issue with it is. I'm just musing that "vibes", "feel", "identity", and "personality" are so nebulous but I see it used as feedback quite often since the benchmark came out and it doesn't really mean anything. Or rather it doesn't mean any one thing.
