Only one character on this list is in the MSQ, and that's Omega. He was literally a part of the Shinryu story and was his foil.
And even in the raid series, he was trying to test us out by having us fight all these simulations. These simulations being literally just basic one-note parallel universe beings in design that is never meant to be talked to, and we never talk to unless we're fighting. Halicarnassus and Chaos is literally just stuck on their own respective floors and was never introduced in the MSQ, so yeah there's nothing to explore here.

They're throwaways, but they make sense to be throwaways considering Omega literally uses them to "test" our abilities. In fact, I'd go so far to say that these characters are a part of Omega's character exploration as well. It's an extension of him, puppets or familiars if you will.

Not in the MSQ, but has an amazing build up in ARR. You see him in a bunch of Hard dungeons, trying to do something, and always just barely escaping after we beat him.
It all culminates into the Heavensward 24 man story which is one of the best payoffs I've seen and also intersects a lot with the PoTD story too.
He's very well explored for a "throwaway" character. If FFXIV treated the Fiends like Diabolos, I'd be plenty happy.

You literally see her as you go through ARR, and then it finally culminates into one of the hard dungeons where it's revealed that she's actually performed necromancy so she can get her abusive tank bf back to life, and then she falls off and then returns AGAIN to POTD, and then the story is actually finished.

... Actually maybe not, cause you can still see her around the citystates sometimes. Just watching you, like the creep she is.

For a throwaway character that's not in the MSQ, she's pretty damn well explored.

Yes. We are experiencing FFXIV's story and writing and literally anything else other than that is irrelevant.
It doesn't matter if I pick fucking idk, Kefka from FFVI, and put it in the story. I'll still apply the same standards that they have established from ALL THE WAY back to ARR to these characters.

I do not care where these people came from. I care if they're well written, and right now they absolutely aren't.

And don't tell me that the Fiends are literally the same as Chaos or Halicarnassus or Kefka in O8S. They're not.

We literally TALK to them. They're literally in the MSQ. They're the big baddies.
They should not be one note throwaway characters whose job is to be "HURR DURR I WILL EAT YOUR WOLRD WAAAAAAAA" like some basic highwayman in an RPG.

Glad you said this. Because it just reminded me. Not Shb, but Anima. Anima was from X, what was Anima in X? Seymour's mom. What is Anima in XIV? Zenos' dad. Wow imagine that more fan service. Crystal Tower raids? Wait for it... Fan service to FFIII. Thordan and the Knights of the Round, fan service to FF7. You let me know how many people give a flying shit about Edda for one. For two even did that hard mode dungeon. Three even remember who she is now. Pretty damn sure I'm gonna remember a whole lot more about literally any character in these post patches, than I remember about Edda.

Also they treated the fiends 10x better than Diabolos, lmfao. Diabolos got a dungeon and then he was in an alliance raid. And what conversations did we have with him btw? Oh wait we didn't. Got it.

My literal argument is that some random healer back in ARR is actually better written than the BIG BAD MSQ VILLAINS in this arc.

Moenbryda was better written.
That Talos short story from back in Shadowbringers was better written (albeit deus ex machina ish)
Hell even god forsakened ASAHI was better handled, along with Yotsuyu's mother and father.

If thats what you took from the Four Fiends in FFXIV with them just "hurr durr I will eat your world" then wow you must've just intentionally tuned them out. Not gonna gonna say that they're deep and meaningful but you seriously dont need an emotional and complex backstory to every single thing, just need to have enough motivation and understanding to know why they do the things they do in a jrpg for villians. Its clear that the writers didnt want to drag out the four fiends into this current arc and wanted to give them enough screentime and weight to achieve whatever the plot needs them to do and honestly thats enough.

While I understand the premise behind this persons issue with the fiends, the point is they were never more than canon fodder to a wider goal. Not the first or last time, even if they spent more time with them their goals would still be the same. I come to the source to finally die because I can't back in the void...no amount of writing is going to make that any different the premise is still the same or how I see it. I am holding out for what 6.4 does before I lean into any criticism of their handling because at the moment nothing has stood out as terrible...I have experienced terrible in many games and this ain't it.

And that's the worse thing about it.

They've literally hinted at this backstory. Hell it's literally the story about the 13th! It's literally a shard of the our world that became corrupted and its inhabitants being summoned into the Source for all kinds of bullshit. They literally dangled and mentioned and acknowledged that "Yeah we're actually stilll human xd" with Rubicon, and that's just a missed opportunity to explore that instead of just watching Zero eat bread for 3rd time.

That's what's disappointing about it. There was so much potential, but we just kill two of them in a dungeon and that's all she wrote.

Lifestream, aether and the aetherial sea is just FFVII, FFIX and FFX when it comes to the afterlife. Doma is FFVI, Krile who is one of the Scions (albeit minor) is ripped straight out of FFV, Crystal Tower and everything having to do with Allag is just FFIII, uh...

The first time around, you don't even fight three of them; they're defeated in cutscenes by two other party members each, and the one you do fight can be made a total joke just by equipping Auto-Float. The second time, they're out-of-nowhere speed bumps in the second-to-final zone who get a couple lines of dialogue and then die. The final time, they're crystallized trash mobs in the final zone, which is pretty short, so you might not even see more than one or two.

I was hoping we would get more stuff done this patch, but we just got baited by Cagnazzo and they destroyed our portal, that's it, I guess the focus of this patch was Zero's character development (which was something I've seen a hundred times but eh, I hope she stops spamming that tip hat emote from now on).
But we fight Golbez next patch for sure. SURELY things will start to become interesting in 6.4, right?

You're not supposed to tell others that the series loves to get it's kicks by taking it's self out on a date and then go back to its place to do the horizontal foxtrot. I had a person say I was crazy for wanting to know the difference between why some things when they die just turn into aether dust. You know the stuff you see all over the Delta Quadrant in Azys La and how some people like Yasale, Elidibus, Haurchefant ect get the Farplane sperm thingies.

For me up to ShB Hydelean and Zodiark felt like they were going beat for beat of the Altana Vs Promethean storyline from XI. Heck both MMOs have the players beat up Hades at the end of one of their expansions. And yes the it has to be all one way or the other is one of my gripes with the community as well. Especially when it comes to liking or disliking something. You say you like something and somehow that must mean you don't have any minor faults with it. Or that you have to be a shill.

I think there's probably more people who remember and care about Delores Bear and his ill fated party than Edda herself. There were even people who had forgotten who G'Raha was when starting ShB due to how long ago they had done the CT raid.

I feel she does it or did it due to being uncertain about how to respond to things. Like it comes off as the same way someone might fidget with the hem of their shirt sleeve or the hem of their shirt. Or biting of their lower lip. I'm fairly certain we will see a lot more build up and more action mid way to late in 6.4.

If it truly wants to follow FFIV I would see the dungeon we fight his sister because he had a shadow dragon so he may possess her...then the trial be him. But that is if they follow 4 closely that could of course be completely different.

This has been a big topic amongst my friend group. Its not a coincidence that this entire expansion is heavily inspired by IV and we're literally going down the list of boss fights from IV. With all of that and knowing how things go with Golbez and subsequentially Zeromus (Zemus prior to his death and his emotions forming Zeromus) after that. Having a character in XIV having the name Zero, there is no way thats just a coincidence. I'd be heavily shocked, if Zeromus doesn't play a part in 6.5 or 7.0.

I think the Four Fiends are decently written. Like, what we see of their past in the side quest is really good and lets us get an idea of their motives and what life was like during the Contramemoria (Its just a sin that all that is hidden in a side quest and not incorporated into the MSQ itself.) The writers just decided that they where not going to be long-term characters in whatever they have lined up. It sucks when that happens to characters you like (I still miss you Moenbryda...) but it happens. I wonder if the complaints about the Four Fiends would be the same if they where unique FFXIV creations, or if some are putting them on pedestals just because of their legacy.

Nothing. Someone got their pantyhose all in a twist cause they didn't feel the Fiends got enough screen time. Then yelled at people for bringing up FF IV when they didn't bring it up. While completely missing the point that it's kind of weird to get all huffy about that when they didn't get much in the game they're a reference to. And putting way more stock into Edda than one probably should have in how memorable she was.

Oh so I'm your Renault. Sorry about that. You lasted longer than I did. And yeah with how we got the tale in ShB it felt as though some of the devs had just done a speed run of RotZ and CoP. As I went man this all feels like what happened in XI.

I feel that if their back stories were part of the MSQ we'd have more people complaining about the pace these last two patches. Along with how much more filler they'd both feel like. This is the XIV community when hasn't it put things on absurdly high pedestals only to get grouchy when something doesn't meet their expectations.

That's why I just approach everything as it's own stand-alone thing, even if it's from another game. "oh neat, they added this" is about all I go into it.





Remember the outrage when fenrir was "just a dungeon boss"? People expected it to be some huge summon/major boss thing because of XI.....

This is how I go about it. I'm just glad we get to see these characters in different views in this game. IV and VIII are my top two FF's. Being able to see the Fiends and Eden in whatever capacity they're added in, is good enough for me.

HAH, I do like Renalt but his posts have summed up my feelings about this entire thread so I haven't felt the need to comment.... until now. This is really the only thing worth commenting on since I refuse to give the OP the time of day.

Word for word when I saw the Tempest and they had been talking about the ancients and Zodiark and Hydaelyn being the oldest and most ancient of primals earlier was "so I'm playing FFXI RotZ/CoP, just in XIV?" and my friends (who also played XI) went ".....holy s[kupo]t you're right." It's not a bad thing, those were fun xpacs! The only thing we're truly missing is that the main spoken races are just aspects of what amounts to the 7 Deadly Sins and we'd really be just Vana'diel Lite. :D

Wasnt saying that. Just that people complaining that the we defeated all of the fiends within these patches while I can understand wishing a bit more from them (me included), its also a bad thing to drag them out for longer than necessary. I reserve my full judgement till 7.0 comes and then I can see how I ultimately feel how post-EW was handled. So far I think its just ok, interesting but just curious whats it building up to.

Yes, "filler" happens from time to time. Not everything is or was filler, and some exposition isn't bad for the slow kids in class or new players that haven't been absorbing all this lore and information for nearly a decade. Not to mention there has been new lore revealed, though you probably missed it by having your angry-goggles on as you did the MSQ. Namely, some hints at who Golbez might be and what he may have done to get there. And we also got to see the 13th - the actual world, not little sections of it - for the first time. Which is a pretty big lore reveal.

Opinions are opinions, but seriously, not every patch is a 5.3. I'd be interested in hearing you answer - without looking them up - what happened in those other patches and how they were all better than this one.

What you seem to be missing is that's the problem. Imagine just watching the Tatooine scenes of Star Wars: A New Hope/Episode 4 and then complaining that it's a boring trilogy just about an annoying kid on a desert planet. You don't judge a story arc by looking at only a section of it. I mean, you CAN, but generally speaking it's a bad idea. You have to judge it as a whole and as it fits in the greater series/universe in which it's set.

The GBA version is still the best one and let's be honest if we get a Zeromus fight there is no way they aren't giving us a arrangement of it. Given it's all that have to give us before 7.0 happens.

We pretty much have Golbez/Azdaja, maybe fight the 4 Archfiends again and most definitely Zeromus. If they want to go a bit further on fanservice they can throw in the Creator from FF4:The After Years.

Hmmmm ......we did it once via the Exarch, we use the Tower gate opened by the Exarch as our method of travel, the other five got summoned the same way at the cost of ripping their souls from their bodies The 13th to the First yes, the ONLY person that can travel freely between the First and the Source is us..even the Exarch cant get back. The 13th yes..but to the Source? Hell even Unakalhai had to ask us to use a damned crystal to get him there.

I mean I get your drift, but the Exarch himself said that that barrier had yet to be breached, and that his summons of us to the First was a case of "hit and miss". Feo Ul for all her power, is able to communicate only via dreams...so yeah, that has to be coming..a way to go from the Source to the First. Even she cant penetrate that barrier.

My fondest wish is to have seen what happened when Alisaie materialised..Id love to have been a fly on the wall when she told him just HOW displeased she was....
