Legitimate reasons why many of you do NOT like Gear Swapping

I got a better idea!!!!

Armor Layering! Like Ambacrombie and Fintch....

Like you can wear THREE polo's at a time one for each stat you want to buff, then expose your baskeball shorts with Boxers all under a set of saggin jeans you see....each with their own stat buffs....

then we add the mount swapping,

the food swapping...

then we have layers and layers of armor we can swap

it's like swapping to the extreme man!!! It adds SO MUCH game excitement to the battle you can REALLY squeeze your all out of your avatar and jobs....

Right now the only way you can quickly modify your stats mid-combat IS by food swapping. The cool-down on consuming food is very short with the new effect immediately overriding the old effect. Unfortunately this is costly...but I suppose if absolutely needed you could alternate between Attack Magic Potency food and Magic Accuracy food depending on what your casting...etc...kinda sucks though that this is the only way to adaptively change statistics mid-battle.

I personally do some very minor gear-swaps already mid combat to get some small boosts for certain abilities/spells. It's not that it is necessarily needed, but I do like to try an optimize my performance as much as I can.

I can't recall exactly where I read it....I know it was some post I read recently...where someone mentioned (maybe it was a Paladin thread) adding in a stance ability for Paladin (similar to Cleric Stance) that allowed a Paladin to alternate between defensive and offensive stats... like a 25% increase in attack in exchange for a 25% decrease in defense. I know at least for Paladin this would kind of 'off-set' my desire for being able to gear-swap. (I don't actually play Paladin at all, but if I did...) I really am a fan of Cleric Stance for this reason. I don't much like healing, and playing CNJ with healing gear really sucks when you get in a situation where you really need some extra damage for whatever reason...Cleric Stance offers that quick solution without swapping gear.

Maybe viable gear-swapping doesn't need to be added, but having something in the game that allows for a change in a player's role mid-combat would be cool and allow for a more flexible combat style.

that's exactly what we mean,

remake the battle engine so it makes more dynamic fun types of play.....so gear swapping shouldn't be a needed or wanted thing.

Instead of gear swapping for situational stat pushups SE could reduce the cooldown timer on the medicine potions. Then we could use them more to push our skills.

Because you missaplied Descarte. Imo, conclusions drawn from subjective thought experiments are only valid in terms of religion/philisophy, being this is a discussion about an objective science (ultimately math and computer science) Descartes conclusions have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

The libertarian side of me screams, "Why restrict players from playing how they want to play?!" If people want to gear swap let them gear swap. If you don't want to gear swap don't gear swap. If you want to complain about it well that's what the forums are for. :p

if you use let players play the way they want argument i wanna use a bow on my blm then. have both lvled i should be able to. Also i wanna be able to dual wield lances, i have an off hand slot i should be able to put another lance in there.

That's just going to the extreme..

BRB dual wielding swords on my DRK/NIN because uh... it looks cool but fails miserably in the accuracy and dmg department.

I can just exaggerate the same way and tell SE to remove all stats + TP from the game.

I don't really see how terribly different it is, your asking SE to change a game mechanic to allow you to swap gear mid-battle, and to make it viable you have to fix the blinking issue because of the major slowdown and bind it causes. They also may have to make it work where you can auto-attack while blinking (un-verifiable atm) and maybe overhaul the stats to make it even worth doing to begin with.

That seems like just as much work as incorporating the ability to dual-wield lances, new animations templates for 2 lances, and maybe a new ws template to utilize them.

Ah but all that is SE's fault. For trying to over complicate the game because they didn't want players figuring out what goes on behind the animation. And the blinking... especially the length of the blink, lol I'll just never understand.

Actually I believe the reasoning for the long delays in just about everything in this game.. is due to the fact that SE wants to track every single little move you make, including changing of jobs/classes/gear/trades/melding/converting to materia etc..

Aye they purposely put that barrier in there because they didn't want it to become a standard like in FFXI, just the same way they didn't want people dual-wielding weapons.

Since the game doesn't have something that lets you change all gear at once, there's really no way to avoid blinking. And why would they go around making such fixes if they still have no intention on incorporating gear swapping (probably the only thing keeping mages from having too much of an advantage tbh). If anything I'd say SE went out of their way to make sure it didn't come back.

Actually SE's excuse for the slow menu interface was to help counter RMT actions, but IMO it just hurt the game in the end. It doesn't help the servers internal architecture is horrendous making things that much worse to actually accomplish anything.

Actually I think he is more referring to perception of the truth and reality itself. Separating the two is more difficult than people give credit for. A fact is a fact based on the perception of a person(s). If my perception(s) is/are different then the fact(s) are different or do not exist at all. Hence perception is 9/10 reality. The other 1/10 is doubt, fear or instinctual skepticism. Both the 9/10 and the 1/10 are based on thought or reaction and since that is true then there is a distinct possibility that reality would change or cease to exist if we were to change our perceptions. At least that's what I got from it :).

To apply that concept to our current forum topic.

How far down the "fantasy" hole do we want to go. Are ninja flips by mages ok now? Do we allow gear swapping at will in any location or situation? Do we allow skills to be mixed and matched by any class/job?

The real question is...what is your perception of how this game should be and what we should be capable of and how to balance that out while considering content. If you feel like a Dev now then your are starting to understand their job. Good Luck guys :).

They can now, but until a few patches ago they couldn't cast w/o their weapon out, so it's more of a unintended side effect rather than SE actually adjusting the mechanics so mages could gear swap. That's not true, you could always cast with your weapon put away. I know because my LS used to hound me about putting my weapon away because I liked the way it looked when I ran with it out.

Challenge accepted.

Swapping means itemization becomes watered down, leading to the creation of "situational" gear. This means that your abilities are no balanced around the stuff you're wearing, but around what you could "possibly" be wearing. This leads to encounters being balanced around that, increasing stat requirements. This in effect leads to inventory bloat because *gasp* you have to carry multiple sets of crap in your inventory to do anything half-decently, which eventually create larger inventory problems as the game ages because the developers find themselves in a spot where they have to add more and more situational gear, which then leads to asinine attempts to circumvent the problem (gear storage NPCs). Which is then further compounded by the fact that you will have people with multiple classes and jobs at level cap. Leading to more wasting of resources to circumvent the problem (porter moogles).

What I find funny about this is that people in FFXI complained about lack of inventory, yet are utterly blind to what was causing their inventory woes in the first place.
