I am the friend in question here. And this run was indeed horrible. And I had a difficult time recovering from how disastrous it all started out. The rest of the run I just couldn't focus no matter how hard I tried.

I don't understand why everyone thinks that everyone wants to/enjoys learning things blind (something one person in the alliance said). Some people may, but it's exactly that. SOME PEOPLE. Not everyone. Like Forte said, not everyone learns from watching videos. I am an example of this. I could watch videos all day, but until I experience a fight and the mechanics involved, I won't know what to do. I appreciate it when people explain fights. I don't like going in blind. And I genuinely believe that our new SCH wanted our help. Why should I be kicked for wanting to help people?

How would explaining the ENTIRE RAID in a short, 1-2 minute period be efficient? How can you expect anyone to retain such an overload of information? Snippets, while they may take more time, are better in the long run because it's easier to process smaller chunks of information rather than one large one. And yeah, some people may be able to remember an entire run-down of a dungeon or raid, but you don't want to assume that EVERYONE can. Remember what happens when you ASS-U-ME.

This is extremely discouraging, especially since I just became a mentor (read: just now got my crown, and decided not to hide it, as I initially wanted to do). I don't see why I should be kicked from a raid for wanting to do my job as a mentor and help someone. I also don't understand why people act like this. This week in particular has been full of bad people in DF. Rude people. People rushing ahead. Tanks that look like they picked their gear blindly from a hat. It's making playing FFXIV exhausting, and I really don't want it to be that way. It's supposed to be something fun for me to do after work to unwind. Instead, it feels more like a chore.

Worst part, my healing boots STILL didn't drop, which means I need to go back in AGAIN. And I'm honestly scared to because of the way the last few runs have been.

Btw, they eventually did wait a *little* bit longer as the raid progressed for us to explain. And each time they held on and didn't pull too early, we didn't wipe. Every time they pulled early--WIPE. So tell me again how explaining mechanics at the beginning of the fight is useless and a waste of time?

Cutter's Cry with a mentor who doesn't mentor the sprout tank (he just wanted the title. I asked), who really didn't have a clue what he was doing. It's like running Satsasha all over again. I had to make a very difficult decision on who to kick (it ended up being the tank. The show must go on I'm afraid :[ ). I guess a pipe dream update I got in mind would be that if your mentor status is on, mentor roulette replaces the standard leveling roulette, an effort to keep mentors honest. Definitely should've just ran FATEs instead :/

What was the sprout tank not doing for you to kick him? Cutters' isn't very difficult to tank.

The only time I have encountered Ozma doing meteors during pyramid was that 1 run I had where we had such slow DPS that we got Hellwind on Forgal... 4 times.

It feels to me that Ozma either switches forms at specific time intervals or casts meteors at certain health intervals. So when the fight progresses at I guess the expected speed you almost never see meteors during pyramid. Only when the fight is going super slow have I ever seen meteors combined with pyramid.

As for assimilation, it actually surprises me how many people do not know that the way to remove the debuff is to look away from ozmashade. You look away to dodge, but if you could not dodge it (such as flying through the air) you can remove it by looking away till the debuff is gone. I guess they put in the mechanic that way as a safety mechanism since it would not be fair to have a entire flying alliance get assimilated.

You could have told him the basics of tanking that you see other tanks do. If he was willing to talk then you do not need a mentor tag to inform him of what he can do to do better.

Had meteors during Ozma's tetrahedron form yesterday, was expecting the awkward situation you described with the bleed AoEs. Turns out it stops casting that until after the meteors have landed.

There isn't a mechanic in this game that, when handled correctly, will just randomly screw you over anyway. SE's testing is at least better than that.

That would've taken too long, at least as far as actually sitting him down and showing him positioning, what button to push when etc. Again, it wasn't like he needed only a pointer here and there. He needed to be taken aside and actually have tanking explained to him, to get him out of solo questing mode. Not something the rest of us - and most certainly Mr. Mentor, who just couldn't be bothered to do the job he signed up for - had time to do. We are trying to get a dungeon done after all.

Just had one of those Duty Finder moments.

Had a tank who was in Halatali for the first time as a tank. (But not a new adventurer.) That's fine. But then I realized he couldn't speak the language of the other group members, even though he queued for that language. Okay...well...that's... "whatever, as long as we do fine." I thought.

I've done many beginner dungeons with first timers and have very rarely had problems. (Only one other time comes to mind.)

The first pull goes fine.
The second pull, the tank gets too close to the bombs in the room and pulls all 5 mobs. Some mobs are attacking me and the summoner and the tank doesn't take them off. So now I'm healing 3 people.
Tank dies.
I can't use Raise during battle yet, so the summoner uses Resurrection. Tank comes back. I heal him. Cast protect, we kill the remaining mobs.

Tank stands around for a while saying nothing. O-kay...
He goes to attack the next set of mobs.
I know he is in a weakened state from dying earlier, so I watch first couple of hits before using Cleric stance. He seems fine. I heal him to full and then switch into cleric stance to drop Aero once or twice.
As soon as I switch into cleric stance all 3 mobs hit him at once and he goes to about 10% HP.
Wait for cleric stance cooldown to come off and switch back. Begin casting Cure, but he dies again.
Summoner uses Resurrect again.

Should I not have tried switching into Cleric stance? Maybe. But the first few hits looked fine, and the simultaneous attack by the 3 mobs was unexpected. I've definitely dealt with stickier situations.

So the tank goes "Heal pls". It's the first time someone has ever said such a thing to me. (I can understand English well enough, so I was okay. Not sure about other members though.)
I was SO tempted to say "Don't pull 5 mobs at once "pls"." But I didn't...... well I guess I did now.

So everyone was silent and we continued. But the tank continued to go afk randomly and not attack the next mob after one died. Just standing there doing absolutely nothing.. I tried poking him and still no movement.

So because you died once due to your own fault by not handling hate and poor positioning, and died a 2nd time due to being in a weakened state and my miscalculation (yeah, I did make a mistake), it gives you the right to go super slow and hold everyone else up? Very very rude, unthinkable, behavior.

When the tank's HP got below 50% he would start running around in circles and towards me. Because running towards me is going to make my heals go faster?

So the summoner was getting annoyed at the tank's lack of effort and tried pulling one set of mobs.
And the tank did absolutely nothing. Just stood there and watched as I heal the summoner.
Finally, the tank picks up the targets, but again due to poor positioning, pulls another group of mobs. Miraculously, I was able to heal him to survive the onslaught. (Weakened state had worn off.)

Right before the final boss, the summoner has bad positioning and 2 bombs attack her. The tank does absolutely nothing to pull them off. I use fluid Aura on one of them to push it toward the tank. Still no effort to pick it up...

The other DPS, a dragoon, doesn't move out of self destruct and instantly dies. I kept the tank and summoner alive. While the dragoon is running back, the tank begins laughing at the summoner.
(I doubt they know each other since the speak differently languages.)

Also, the summoner didn't seem to know to destroy the tiny flames that approach the first and last boss, so the dragoon was doing it.
I was told to "heal pls", so I focused mostly on just that. Healing. And only dropping DoT at the beginning and only DPSing when there was one mob left.

Not by itself, no. But when I'd also have to say:

• Also: Fast Blade, Riot Blade, in that order. You don't have them, get them on your bars. You need to make use of them. gotta keep that MP up.

• MP full or nearly full? Then Fast Blade, Savage Blade, Rage of Halorne, in that order. Use it on whatever monster is taking the most damage ie. it's going to be the one that's about to be pulled off you.

• And get.Provoke.on.your bars. You DON'T want to know what the healer is saying in my FC chat whenever he's getting smacked around because of this.

• Main menu > HUD Layout. Select "Enemy list" then move that to where you can easily see it without it being in the way. That's going to be one of your best friends when tanking. Need to monitor it to see who's doing what to whom, so you can act accordingly.

• Also, while you're in the HUD layout menu, look for "Party list" and move that to where you can easily find it without it being in the way, another very good friend of yours. You're specifically looking for the little bars underneath each class icon. Those show how much threat they got on what you have targeted. Pay close attention to them.

• Sense a theme? Don't just fight one monster until dead, switch targets often. We don't always attack what you attack.

• Always try to keep monsters in front of you, barring AoE attacks. Always try to keep still as well, so we can do our jobs properly. This is FF XIV, not The Benny Hill Show lol.

• Looking at your gear.... MY EYES! You need to choose gear with VIT on it and avoid gear that can be used by "All classes". You want gear that says something like "GLD PLD MRD WAR DRK" on it, which are specifically for tanks. Some may also have "LNC DRG" as well. Those are subpar but better than the "All classes" gear.

....then that takes up way too much time, and I'm sure the other guys didn't queue up for this (and I know that mentor sure didn't!). Not very fair to them.

A while ago I was just doing a Mhach run on one of my characters. We stopped before Ozma for a couple of minutes while waiting on someone to relog/fill a slot I think, but once it was looking like we were ready to go, the last player remaining outside stopped right before the jump into the arena and kind of held everyone else up for a short bit, so people jokingly commented on it. In any case, we had a one bar LB ready so I was watching the map for the last player to make it in so I could initiate a pull. Once they began moving again I waited until they met up with their party, gave them a few seconds even then to get settled, noticed my Tank(MT) was targeting me so figured that maybe he was waiting on me to LB to begin. Took a last look to make sure everyone was here and ready, then pulled with LB.

Our healer mouthed off, "like a dumbass". I didn't even know why he was spamming emotes but I was about ready to politely ask him to please stop spamming my chatlog and do something more productive. In any case, someone from another alliance noted that everyone was actually inside.... and that was the last I heard of that. Rather than his outburst, what annoyed me most was how unbelievably sad it was that he couldn't even work up a half-hearted apology for speaking out of turn. Twit.

Except there's no way--short of making a premade of experienced players--to make it 100% that a party won't get a beansprout or someone who doesn't know how to perform a specific job (sprout or not) because they are new to it. If you or that mentor or anyone else "don't want to sign up for that," form a premade or use the Party Finder. If this was that (bad) mentor's Mentor Roulette, then he's guaranteed a sprout with each roulette, so he will always have a newbie. And some may do alright, others may not. If he doesn't want to mentor (sounds to me he's in it for the shinies), then he needs to not be a mentor. Shinies or not. Because he gives the good mentors a bad name.

Secondly, runs tend to go much smoother if people would wait patiently to let a (willing) mentor help a beansprout/person new to a job. Less wipes, less confusion, less anger. Typically anyways. Of course, the sprout has to be willing to listen, and I know many are not. I'd rather have a slightly slower, but smoother run with less wipes, than a speed run with wipes every other trash pull.

It's also not very fair to kick a sprout after not bothering to explain to them how a new dungeon works, or help them out. And yeah, maybe he should have a little better understanding of his job at level 38-40, but still trying to nudge him in the right direction couldn't hurt. Like someone else said, you don't have to be a mentor to help.

Not fair to them?!?
That "mentor" queued with a crown on, that means it's his job to do that sort of explaining. If he is not only so bone-idle that he refuses to actually do any mentoring, but would even have the temerity to complain about someone else doing it, then he deserves to have that crown ripped from his head and shoved up his backside.

Signed up for Midas normal runs on SCH this morning because I'm tired of tanking it. We get to Twinkledinks with no problems, go down the slide, start party buffs, then:

PLD: who's going to do bombs?
Me: not me, we will wipe <----- *has wiped the raid doing bombs*
SCH2: not me, I'm terrible at them.

We shuffle our feet for a moment. The PLD points out that we have four melee and says bombs are easy. I tell him, will you say that again after we wipe?

I step up and volunteer and SCH2 thanks me. I ask someone to help me with three bombs and the tank pulls.

The first few rounds of bombs away are fine. I even manage to get two bombs where I'm sure I would have failed before.

Then the real test: three bombs. SCH2 jumps in to help me. We gorilla up and punt all three bombs away; but, we both get clipped and die on the way back to the party. I joke from the floor, the good news is we didn't wipe the raid! Group dps was so good they killed him before anyone else died. \o/

Actually had a *better* run of Weeping City last night. Not perfect, but better than the other runs I've had all week.

Had a Battle of Which Tank Has the Biggest You-Know-What on Forgell and the trash mobs before him (but it was very entertaining to read lol). The other healer in our alliance (I was running as WHM for those healing gears) was quiet impatient and a little rude. And after Forgell, about 5 or 6 people left after getting their drops, the majority being healers (including our rude one). XD Got a WHM who was a little spacey during Ozma (resulting in lots of deaths), but the apologized. Also mentioned they'd already ran Weeping 11 times that day for their loot (dang, please take a break!).

Still no healing boots.... Looks like I know what I'll be doing all weekend! ;-; I just want to get rid of my VA boots already!!

My first time doing Sohr Khai tonight, we got to the last boss. Because it was my first time I let my Cutscene roll (Yes I like to do that) but the rest of my party went ahead and fought the boss (I'm the healer fyi).

It got sealed off before I could go in. My party died, of course. The Tank (A paladin) and a DPS (Black mage) were trying to pin the blame on one another. PLD said that BLM was pre casting so she had no choice but to pull, but BLM said he didn't. Monk was blaming the Tank.

I couldn't see myself cause, cutscene, but that goes without saying.

If you have newbies to a dungeon in your party and they bring it up more than once, try to not go ahead and run fights without em especially if they're a healer. :D
Before anyone says "Why not just skip cutscenes?" Because not everyone would like to skip on their first time and possibly forget to view it later. But that's just me.

I get really annoyed by twitchy BLMs that are constantly casting/canceling until the tank pulls. :( I imagine the tank didn't realize the BLM wouldn't let the cast complete until the tank ran for the boss.

It's okay. ^^ I actually enjoy Weeping when people aren't being butts. Hopefully my boots will drop when I spam it tonight XD. I'm glad to hear that your run was good too! I know a lot of people have had crappy runs all week. It's exhausting.

Speaking of like triple drops, I once ran and the Boots of Scouting dropped four times for our alliance. First boss and second boss--double drop in our treasure chest. And it did it to another alliance too! Like game, pls.

Had a lvl60 roulette earlier in Fractal. Tank says they're new. Dps claims they need to, uh, have a bathroom break and bails out. The mentor healer follows suit. I stay with the tank and said I'd ask my FC if someone's willing to help. Another healer with a crown comes in, casts protect, and after a minute or two leaves. A few moments tick by, yet another healer with a crown, and this time my FCmate queues in as a DPS. We go through the dungeon, with my FCmate and I trying to explain the boss fights. No wipes, might have taken a bit longer than usual but I have no gripes with that. I'm just astounded that Those With the Crown are the ones that bail out.

I'm just astounded there are people leaving Fractal period.

If it's through lvl 60 roulette, literally anything beats landing in ARF for the 50th time.
If it's through Mentor roulette, Fractal's as easy as you can get.
If it's through direct queue all I can say is: wat.

I love Fractal. It's easy, it's fast, it's great. It also has an Owlet minion I don't have yet so maybe my opinion's a bit biased.

That minute when you ask people to please save the lb3 until 5% on Ozma and Calo in case a healer lb3 is needed--and they use it the minute it pops. Funnily enough, both times resulted in an entire wipe of my alliance.

Even better, when they don't bother to let the lb even build up past the first bar during Forgell.

Way to go, DPS. Way to go.

Are you serious? You kicked a sprout because It'd not be FAIR to the mentor and other people who are max lvl!? Give your head a shake man get off your high horse and help the new players if they're struggling. It literally takes 2 mins out of your day and makes that person more confident for future content, what did you think "Oh I have a mentor he'll explain everything so I won't have to!".

I"m not a mentor and I still take time out of my game time if I see someone struggling I don't care if the group complains it's not "It's my sub I play how I want" it's being a helpful player and a nice person in a already toxic community that if you're a tank you need to lead, you need to know what you're doing 1000% of the time, no that's not it at all if someone's new and they are struggling then you'll quickly jump to the conclusion of man this guys terrible.

All those points you outlined why didn't you say them? To me it's like you didn't even try to help this poor sprout at all. As for that mentor we already know that the majority of mentors just want it for the crown and the 2000 achievement for the mount which'll take years to get and rightfully so. Having an incentive to even be a mentor and help people is counter intuitive to actually help people.

sorry I made that mistake as dps before. does anyone else have people leave for reason even when group is going well. or get kick when group is going well at any point this does seem stranger to me

This bugs me as well. I had a BLM who tried to do this or precast or something on the first boss of Halatali normal. You know, that level range when tanks have crap aggro generation and have a really difficult time if dps, especially BLMs, decide to go full ham from the first second. I ended up trolling a little and kept running forward and stopping every time I saw him begin to cast so he had to cancel constantly. (He had been a bit of a jerk earlier when I lost aggro to him because he was attacking the wrong target...) He got annoyed and left after the boss was done. It was a good run after that. :D

That was actually a sarcastic remark made towards the mentor. He was a mentor but didn't want to mentor anybody. You'd have to read my early posts a few pages back. I was left with a choice between kicking him or the newbie (I called him out for not helping the tank, he said this wasn't his mentor roulette so I guess he implied it wasn't his problem. He immediately became a kick candidate). The other guy (he was with me) was already saying the same thing as well. Not very fair to us if we have to put the brakes on the dungeon run in order to break in the new guy, especially when we have a mentor in the group who should've been doing this to begin with. If Mr. Mentor hadn't have been there, things might have been different. But, it was what it was.

Secondly, it'd have taken a lot longer than just 2 minutes to train this guy. Most if not all that stuff I'd have to explain to him, not just 1 or 2. The guy looked like a solo quester (he had a little of everything, gear-wise, from all different levels) who was only there because he had to be, not because he wanted to be. Chances are he couldn't have cared less about the advice anyway or maybe even be annoyed by it (had that happen in Haukke Manor once, with a mentor that actually did try to help). A no-win situation at the time.

I had to run Weeping City multiple times today for my loot, and finally got it on my third run. And I think I've earned it. The first two runs went okay, a few people goofed here and there but nothing too bad. Third run was looking to be pretty slow at Arachne Eve, and then after wiping on Forgall, I, against my better judgment (because I don't like setting people off), asked in the alliance chat if vets could explain things for the new people before things got worse. Thankfully, no one raged, although I did get someone that thought we were doing fine.

Anyway, long story short, we wiped twice at Ozma and Calofisteri dragged on for a long time, but we finished with no one leaving. I had to explain and re-explain a lot though. I'm terrible at words. And typing. And people.

I guess I must be really lucky as I've only had a BLM like this once before.
But rather than beginning casting and stopping casting, he would just pull the mobs instead of the tank.

He also refused to roll for loot, so we couldn't kick him. But thankfully the timer expired RIGHT before the tank pulled the 2nd boss and I was able to get in the "vote dismiss" option just one second before the tank pulled.

He was kicked within 2 seconds.

Ran a daily MSQ scenario for some quick poetics to save for White Mage gear on my ninja spec. Turns out to be Nidhogg and we had one major issue: 2 summoners. Both were pretty bad, and they would use Limit Break on the 3 mini bosses during add phase. We couldn't clear it because the DPS was severely hurt by this and after wipe 3 they began to blame me (the ninja) and the Dragoon. We busted out butts to do damage, good rotations and used everything at our disposal. After the 4th wipe me and the Dragoon both agreed we couldn't carry with 2 bad casters wished everyone else luck and we left... we threw away what should have been an easy 60 poetics with bonus.

Sometimes I wonder why Summoner is allowed to be so low on damage.

Ran Weeping City for the first time, cuz I'm a lazy turd, (aka.. I had work related things to take care of before this patch) it went .. good considering I had no idea what I was doing. With that said, I'm not completely sure after that first run what the complaints are about the "difficulty" are... it seemed fine?

I couldn't end this post without giving a shout out to the person that gave me extra insight when needed ( you know who you are, out of respect I did not name you here).

Anyway we hear about a lot of bad encounters in this thread... I felt like mine went ok, So I wanted to share that "ok" experience with people.

Even more reason to have kicked the mentor together with a report. Phathoms me how you guys kicked the sprout, really. Now we have another prick mentor who got away with this behaviour. Thanks pal.

You just proved my point though you and the mentor didn't help which you should have i'm not saying you have to but as a fellow player to another player who is just starting how do you think they feel when they get kicked by a mentor and someone who is also max lvl/knowledgeable of old content? You said in previous posts there were many things you could have said to him, I know I would have but i'm not you, I don't know how you play it's not my business and I can't be bothered what bothers me is you guys did nothing but kick him and that's a really crappy thing to do for someone who hasn't even hit lvl cap.

People learn at different skill lvls people are good, people are bad, people will listen if you got his attention i'm sure that the leaf would have said "Understood". I mean hell I just did a Hullbreaker normal with a lvl 60. LEVEL 60. Never did the dungeons, explained every fight to them, took maybe 30 seconds at most. You could have said in Cutters Cry "Hey this worm guy goes underground! Watch out and stick to the walls and away from people!" or for Chimera "If the eyes shine blue move out! If they're purple move in!" since that's the most people struggle with.

Again you bring up the mentor to do the mentoring when the system is flawed? People are greedy and do it for the rewards so basically you let him get away with it so you're part of the problem in that dungeon run. There are mentors who do it to help so i'm not saying all mentors are just in it for the crown and achievements but the ones you run into are and they're the ones you'll remember.

But I just have to ask why not kick the mentor instead of the newbie and try to talk to the sprout to give him more insight on tanking? Because to me and everyone who reads this it's really sleazy what you guys did, don't mean to provoke you or anything but was really unjustified.

I've been neglecting my roulettes all week. I think I did Expert/Leveling/Trials roulette, all as lvl. 60 jobs, for maybe 2-3 days since reset? Those are all the roulettes I did this week, that gave me tomestones of lore.

Long story short, I've capped on lore this week, from doing nothing but Wiping Shitty, which should be a good indicator of how many runs I had to do just to get the 1 piece of gear that I wanted. Caster gear was starting to feel like a mere myth, and so was basic competency from people.

I just can't even be bothered to dig up a list of specific incidents now, there are too many to count. But most of all, I am so very tired of dying and wiping, not through any fault of my own, but because of the incompetency of others.

And also, tanks need to stop pulling bosses to the other edge of the arena when I've already slapped down Ley Lines. I wish this wasn't a frequent enough occurrence for me to complain about it.

One, it might not have gone through (you need 3 votes as far as I know). The guy I was with probably would've voted against it, since he was fed up with the tank as well, so that was out. Not sure what the tank would've done. He was the wild card. He could've been trolling us for all we know (my partner suggested that, and having been there myself I took that into consideration as well). As far as reporting, the mentor was a lvl 60 so I presumed he had more game knowledge than me or the tank did (I wasn't even sure how reporting actually worked, since I didn't see a 'right-click' option). He could've reported me if he was kicked. I understand that, theoretically, the tank could've done the same thing, but I was just going with what I got at the time, it was a judgement call.

It's not really that WC is super hard, it's just really easy for one or two bad people to mess the whole thing up for everybody. Lets hope you keep not running into such people.
