either the result of the "artist" waking up very, very hungover after a night drinking a lot of Sake, looking at the calendar and seeing "Yoshida-san Live Letter, hair needs to be finished" and a mad screaming panic session in photoshop as the "Artist" gulped down a few dozen tylenols.

the "artist's" cat used the finished artwork as litter and the "artist" needed to make new, but was still drunk from all the sake of the night before, so had their 6 year old start up MS-Paint and slide some masked hair layers onto our dear Lion-boys.

It really does feel like there is something going wrong in their modelling department...

Yeah, a lot of players had their hopes pretty high. I set my expectations pretty low from the start, even with viera hairstyles (which I desperately want). I have pretty much given up on it at this point.

I'm not a Hroth player, but man! I have no idea why they can't just do this correctly!? It doesn't seem like that difficult of a job. I believe 3rd Party Creators have better results than the official team! And those are just fans doing it in their spare time!

Saw it as it went live, and even left a comment. I am so glad to hear someone just say it as it is! Those hairstyles are trash, they are not flattering! And one of them even made a great point in their video that I didn't hear anyone point out. They don't look like naturally grown hair, that is not how it would sit on their heads. Even if it was made as more of a joke it pretty much encompasses the problem with these hairstyles in this context. Say what you want about the other races, but when they are wearing these specific hairstyles they look like they have brushed their own hair in that style, but on Hrothgar, it doesn't look good or natural, it looks like they have taken the hair models from the Hyurs and glued them on the Hrothgar's head.

Its good to see people are in outrage over this and aren't all like "are you aware there is a global pandemic going on atm? They have to cut corners(ears) somewhere!" anymore

Production of these races are insanely slow, I don't fancy Hrothgar waiting an extra 6 months just to get ears on their hair. I don't know about anyone else, but I want SE to SHOW us their work of porting hair to the limited races - Why does it require so much time? What were they discussing in those meetings they kept mentioning for the past 3 years in regards to these races?

They should allow the hats/hair and clothing mods. I admit, I ended up looking on Twitter for photos (You dont have to look far) and so much of their work is so detailed and astounding. (Disclaimer: Don't do mods, still against TOS)

This! If it were ANY OTHER RACE than Hrothgar, this wouldn't even be in the discussion. But because it was Hrothgar they saw it as being perfectly acceptable! Cause what are the Hrothgar players gonna do? Complain about it? They are less than 3% of the player base and the JP players don't care about Hrothgar, it's just those westerners and F them, am I right?

Lo and behold, no one was happy with this change. Not even the JP players, who I have heard that they started some threads on their forums, it is not only ugly for the Hrothgar players but everyone that has to see them. Everyone saw this as a massive slap in the face for the Hrothgar community. They are getting backlash for it as they should!
When you promise something for more than 3+ years, don't be surprised that people will get rightfully angry about it when it's done poorly.

The thing that hurts ME the most is that everything else they showed was amazing and it is clear that the dev team put a lot of care into it, EVEN the PARASOLS got more care than a playable race, an item you can only use when you are out of battle and in idle animation! That was on their priority list, not the players that have to pay real-life money to do something that every other race would pay 2k Gill.

So who gets to pick the hairstyles that get converted? Is it the same person who decided which Female Viera hairs got ported? If so fire them.

Yoshida-san as the producer and presenter seemed to have high standards in the past, to the point he did the apology at 6.0 delay. But he waved this through, without care, when it's such amateur "artwork" that it's shocked people over all ff races, and in multiple real world countries to boot. It's rare the NA forums agree, and it's rare the JP forums come out and say something's outright horrible as well.

Honestly, he should have said "no!" and not shown it. He could have just talked about it and said they couldn't show pictures as they were WIP.

These earless hair-styles make me fear Yoshida-san is spending too much time on XVI now. I am starting to wonder after that showing if he's actually stopped caring about XIV.

As a 3D modeller for games, I know what they did. And it is so baffling to me! I hate to hear people that in this regard is the 3D modeller's fault for this when no... it isn't! If it was then the problem would have been resolved in less than a few months! Cause then the easy solution would be: Rework the models! It's not rocket science! If my boss says that a model is acting weird, I will try and fix it, but if it gets too complicated and hard to work with, I put forward to my boss that this needs a rework. What they did was push the blame. And frankly, I won't swallow that pill, especially since they deem it necessary to create a male Viera model, why couldn't they just remake the Hrothgar model instead? And push back the Male Viera with the Female Hrothgar. Let's fix the foundation before we paint the walls, is all I say!
And I want to be clear I am not saying that male Viera was a bad addition, quite the contrary, I really like them. But you can't be telling the players that the reason for Hrothgar's limitation is because of the model and then instead of creating a less-restricting model for them, you add the counterpart for the other race. And don't get me started on the Female Hrothgar cause I can write a thesis on the 2 designs bull! Like you have made an entire model for one of them, but didn't even start on the other? At least a concept art? Yeah, good job on that one. BTW the design stage is the easiest part and the less time consuming of them all, since you put your artists to doodle on a page their interpretation, you could give them a time frame, but that is if you want them to make a mood board. Do not expect for them to come until 7.0 and even then I wouldn't put my hopes up and would keep it to a 7.5 patch folks with how little of a priority this race is that even a parasol accessory was more important and cared for!

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a dartboard and put the number of the hairstyle on it and while blindfolded they throw the darts at the board and on the hair number it lends that one it is! I feel really bad for the blindfolded person though, they seem to be awfully unlucky.

At least with the dart board you're statistically going to pick random styles both good and bad fits, not the 6 worst possible fits.

I keep waiting for any sort of communication from the devs; an apology, a promise to rectify, or even just acknowledge the players being disappointed after 3 years of promises only to get mouldy bread crumbs.

The FFXIV team shot themselves in the foot with their own strict polygon count they imposed on themselves in ARR (and have not updated despite no longer supporting the PS3). To get around this self-imposed limitation they're offloading Hrothgar ear models from the body to the hair since the beastly Hrothgar details require more polygons than humanoids to look decent. This is why the only communications we get are "it's technically very challenging."

They already have a system for hiding/showing ears via metadata. That's why Miqo ears will show with some gear and hide with others. The structure is all there. But instead of using their existing systems and revising their own restrictions and guidelines on polygon counts, they run around like headless chickens screaming in agony about "technical difficulties."

It's extremely unprofessional and frustrating for the players who have gotten empty promise after empty promise for years.

Even with this Hrothgar crisis aside, let's look at an actual model from the game. (Lord's Clogs)

Tell me we aren't long overdue for an overhaul of 3D asset restrictions. I know MMOs are designed around having potentially over a hundred players rendered on screen at once, but it's 2022 now and the PS3 is no longer supported. The average gamer these days plays on a GTX 1060 or equivalent card according to Steam's survey.

It is an answer for the masses. :) You get the reasons behind it, i get it and some people in the forums get it too. But the average player does not care because he does not read the forums. Those "technical challenges" would be solved very quickly if the playerbase would drop due this. But as long as the players accept it, they will put their game developer/designer ressources into new shop items.

From what I recall, Hrothgar is even less played over there than they are here. So if anyone is upset about it, it's likely to be a very small subset of players.

I genuinely love Hrothgar as an addition to the game, but I constantly wonder whether they should have just benched the idea for it - or, y'know, not imposed that "this is the last race we'll ever do, probably™" limitation on themselves which made them feel forced to deliver both a race they wanted to make, and a race the playerbase had been asking for, for actual years.

Even with their steps to rectify some of the issues with them (adding the male counterpart to Viera and promising Hrothgals are coming, giving Viera access to some all-race hairstyles) we're still seeing half-baked and frankly pathetic treatment of both races. Hrothgar are suffering even worse, and I can assure you it's because they're not as prolific as Viera are in terms of player's choice of race.

If they were going to treat them this poorly, they should have just waited and added them after Viera were implemented properly; not hand both camps some half-baked product with severe limitations compared to all other races in the game.

At least Viera can still change their hair via the aesthetician, though, and aren't losing their ears with every new hairstyle added. I genuinely feel awful for Hrothgar players, and this does not set a good precedence for what to expect with Hrothgals in 7.0 or whenever.

I said before but it's long lost in this thread, I don't think they're "picking" them as such, but to me it looks like the first steps in a systematic conversion of everything.

There are the most recently added hairstyles for the other races, which were probably made at the point when it was known behind the scenes that Viera and Hrothgar hairstyles were coming, and so they were made at the same time as the others.

And the rest of the selection seems to be early items: the first available shared hairstyles; FFXIII, which I think was the first one added to the Mog Station, and the ponytail which must have been one of the earliest unlockable styles.

I don't know the order for certain, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is the case that together they are all just sequentially the earliest shared hairstyles in the game.

Edit to add: checking the order that hairstyles are listed, first you have the FFXIII Pulse style mixed in among the semi-race-specific styles, then the first two fully shared styles: one being the style we got already, the other one shown in 6.1 gear previews. (The exact order of the two styles varies by race.) The ponytail is a bit further down the list, but seems to be the second unlockable hairstyle after Pulse.

At the other end of the list, the NieR hairstyles are most recent, though there are two others between them and the Controlled Chaos style. Still, perhaps they are coming later.

Overall it definitely looks like they're being done in a sequence regardless of whether the specific style is a good one for the new races or not.

SERIOUSLY, I have always fought for the Devs and tried to be understanding, but these Hrothgar hairstyles are just plain LAZY. They dedicated absolutely no time or resources for this. I'm am really hoping that they just messing with us because even modders have done better work then what they showed us and they don't get paid!

I think I get what you're saying now. I have a feeling we'll have a better grasp on things with 6.1 as I feel like Viera are getting more than 1 old hair unlocked (And a major "test" should be coming up. 6.1 is about the point where I'd expect them to release a new Hairstyle for reg races as they have released a new hair in 3.1/4.1/5.1. Would like to see if Viera are on-track to get new hairs released in the game even if they don't have all the old ones yet or if they're just going to play prema-catch up for the race.)

Given the fact that 7.0's graphic overhaul will likely involve updating hair textures as well, I'm not sure if they will release new optional hairstyles at the rate that we received them back in Shadowbringers. Each new one added is another new hairstyle to retouch up for then. However, by giving them older ones that will be updated regardless of race, it may lessen the workload.

I guess, they have already high-res textures for the hair styles. It is a common approach, that the game designers create textures with a high resolution and then scale them down. Because it is much less work. But i also read, that they do not have high-res version of the textures and have to recreate them.

Please only use machine translation if your knowledge in the base and target languages is sufficient to see when it messes up and you can it correct as needed.

So... it's been a few days. No reaction to this on Twitter, nothing at the Lodestone, nothing in the forum (that I am aware of. Should there be any comment from a mod or a dev, I'd appreciate a link). Guess it is safe to say that it is not a prank, I know a few people were still hoping it would be. If they stay silent because they read the feedback and are now trying to fix things, so they can present us something better before making promises in statements, or if they just don't care... that's hard to tell. For me, personally, I can only say that it certainly feels like they are ignoring us. Due to time, due to the feedback being unexpected, due to a lack of resources, due to a lack of interest... I can only speculate and I don't want to spread any unfounded rumours while doing so. I just wish they would say something, anything, even if it is straight up stating "nope, we don't care" or "well you got your hairstyles now, we kept our promise, don't complain", still better than silence.

All I can do now is hope that one day Hrothgar and their players stop being an annoying afterthought and get at least the option to change the existing hairstyles more freely without Fantasia. But I don't want to spend more energy for hoping that this will happen in the forseeable future, let alone that we will get customization options that are more than wigs and let us keep the ears. I am too tired and disappointed to keep believing.

It‘s kind of frustrating that the English Forum needs to heavily rely on the Japanese Forum because we feel like our concerns don‘t get addressed as much…

I can give you a good example: The Female Hrothgar thread is 284 pages long (and about 2834 comments) and the mods have not addressed anything, not even a pop in to say "Yeah, we are seeing you and taking your thoughts into consideration!".
All while on a JP thread with less than 50 pages the mods went right in to reassure the players and say that their feedback is taken into account.
That is a bit why is baffling that the people would be upset for us going there, cause they don't hear/they are ignoring us here. So it is natural that we would at least try to get heard.
Now I agree that going there without knowing the language and using google translate more than once could be seen by them as annoying. (a simple like on the original post should do the job IMO.)
But I had this feeling for a long time that the fans that matter for them are the JP fans and we are an easy cash grab. Don't want to feel this way, but Hrothgar is more popular here than there, do you think they would have done the same half assed job to a Lalafell?
