It's not really about being Merced. I personally don't mind the time gate as it's content to do. However, this forces you to pretty much choose between focusing on your Prime weapon or completing Empy +2/3 upgrades which seems kinda wrong to me. Not only as someone who has returned to the game recently but also for anyone that starts playing the game. I don't really understand why the gate couldn't be the drites. Ultimate weapons should have ultimate requirements but it usually doesn't take away from being able to concurrently do other content (upgrades in this case). Correct me if I'm wrong.

You just choose to make armor or weapons.

People are going to need to accept these weapons either aren't for them. Which is no big deal as plenty of other vastly quicker weapons exist. Or that it will take a long time.

ergon are the only weapons with a similar time gate, and that's for the whole weapon (plus the one you didn't pick, you can do right away). this is just one of 3 final stages. its not cool at all.

it shouldn't be for anyone, that's the point. 20 years ago when we were kids maybe, but now? ffxi people all enjoy being given long arduos tasks for the enjoyment both along the way and when finished, but you gotta draw the line somewhere or its just ridiculous.

Perhaps the game is no longer for you then?

Idk what to tell you. It's a long term objective. That is the point. If you have time to do Sortie then you have time to work towards one.
