Because people make mistakes. People are on autopilot when throwing stuff away. Sometimes something enters your inventory when you have something highlighted, causing the highlight to shift to another item. People aren't perfect. That's the ENTIRE REASON THE SERVICE EXISTS. And where are you getting the idea that OP waited over a week to make the GM call?
Then why didn't they do this for OP's weapon? I bet he would be thrilled to get a 70mil item back, even if he'd have to re-augment it.
Other people have had stuff like relics restored to their pre-augmented state, but it's not consistent. I'd bet that most of the support staff knows so little about the game, they'd have no idea where to start so they just deny it. A significant percentage of valuable items are augmented, much more than when the policy was implemented. It needs to be revisited, but that won't happen if people keep white-knighting them, claiming it's fine the way it is, claiming we should be thankful to have the service in the first place. If the service won't replace the most valuable items in the game, it may as well not exist.
Also, for reference, it's not even a one-time deal.
