As far as controllers XI only supports directInput, which is why the xbox controller can't be (properly) supported. DirectInput doesn't support all of the features of the latest generation's gamepads, which is why when you DO get them to work, some buttons (namely the analog triggers) don't work as you expect. Xbox controllers use the XInput interface and it would probably be a lot of work for SE to implement.
That's a keyboard though. I'm not aware of any keyboards that aren't compatible with this game. Good game pads on the other hand are few and far between and it just so happens that everyone moving from PS/360 already has one.

Their gamepads are just as reliable as their keyboards. You might have had bad luck with one but they generally make good products.

Xbox controllers are compatible with PC but not this game because of the technology used, which did not exist when FFXI was created. It wasn't a concern in moving to the xbox 360 because the system handles that stuff. Those who do get the controllers to work find that the analog triggers on those controllers are not recognized as buttons by the game.

You could also consider learning to use the keyboard to play. While it will be likely awkward for you at first, if you can get used to it, the larger number of buttons at your disposal can be quite an advantage, especially when it comes to macro use. The only downside is movement is less smooth (though you can overcome this by learning to use the camera and movement controls in combination effectively)

Yeah, while I agree that keyboard is probably a superior interface, sitting a few feet from the screen isn't an option without a game pad or a weird set up. I've used 3 different models of Logitech controllers and had the same issues with them all. The A/B/X/Y buttons stick and wear out after a while. I've even gone as far as buying their cheaper models and swapping the buttons into my worn out but more expensive model in order to extend it's life. Another problem is the responsiveness. There is a notable lag in the wireless versions. I've been lucky enough not to experience the largest common issue though, which is the controller dropping connection and / or not even being able to function with windows 7/8. The reviews here are pretty telling: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-940-0...ess+controller

My 360 controllers have never had any issues whatsoever other than the lack of support on FFXI. I understand that SE didn't feel the need to support these specific controllers before because there are plenty of other options (although none as good IMO). But now that they are cutting off support for the 360/PS, they have the opportunity to extent a giant olive branch by not forcing the people who played on those systems to go out and buy another device (assuming they have / buy a PC) just to play. Also like I said, the 360 and PS controllers are extremely reliable and well known. Purchasing another controller would mean placing faith in online reviews or even worse.... The blue shirts at best buy.
