I'm a returning player who's having a hard time getting back into the swing of things after playing that abhorring mess called FFXIV (it's actually kind of fun, but after playing it for 11 months, I've gotten so used to its controls this game is almost impossible for me to play lol). I haven't played since early 2013, and even then, I wasn't into the game very much by that point.

How does this campaign thing work?

As I understand it you basically just try and log on and your characters will be active and available.

    Ooh, I see.

So once you log in, that starts the one week timer? Or is it a set length of time (like say 9/8/14-9/15/14?)

You mean like the exclusive login campaign items/limited time items that are only available to people who play the game regularly?

But you can use the time cards to speed up XIV's reward system with little amount of actual play time.

Soooooooooooooo.... the point of speeding things up is to get rewards faster so you don't need to play as much? To me, it seems that would be like giving SE 20 bucks every month to get the fancy reward of the week, and only wanting (being able to play) for 30 minutes each week.

Never said it made any sense yet I know there are people who have the next to latest reward stuff on as glamours or riding around on the newest mount a long while before anyone else has them.

The difference between the rewards systems used in XI & XIV:

XI: you physically log in to accumulate points day by day, slowly accruing the amount needed for a reward of your choice.

XIV: you subscribe for a time period (up to 180 days at a time) and you get rewards based on the total amount of days you have subscribed for.

So if you subscribe for 180 days you'll get rewards instantly in your d-box for up to Rank 4 Veteran rewards. Once you pay for another 180 days you'll get up to Rank 6 rewards. I prefer XI's method more, but I can see why XIV's model works.

As a paying customer, the Return Home campaign was a treat. It was nice to be able to play with some old friends again. I only wish that it was actually two weeks long instead of just one. It's hard to get a group of people together long enough to get anything accomplished.

I understand it's a marketing campaign, it's still pretty disrespectful to paying customers to give it away for free and give no loyalty bonus that offers something.
You get tons of loyalty bonuses just for playing e.g. the login campaigns that other people miss. Why would you surrender hundreds of thosuands of dollars topeople who are already paying and playing and would keep doing so anyway? the goal of the program is to invite former players back. I don't know of any game that offered free game time (subscription) or free cash stuff (f2p) to current players in a campaign designed to win back former customers.
