Actually I think a US company could get in trouble law wise if the same thing happened on the west coast. Not sure what or how exactly but I'm sure it would be equal to whatever happen in the case you're burning a fire without a burn permit during a burn ban issued during a severe drought. Just that it would obviously be on a higher scale and maybe even more costly money wise

    Good idea indeed.
You know that is a damn good idea right there! I'd be in full support of this. =D

If it were an american company and the gov "kindly asked" them to shut down power they would have told them to suck a rail-road spike were still getting paid.
The US can much more easily get access to power from other areas than Japan can. Japan is a small (in area) island nation who can't get power from other nations as easily as mainland nations. And for all we know, what they call "asked nicely to stop using power" in the official statements might have been something that was much more like a direct order from the government.

And you're still not taking into account that even if there was enough power to run the servers now and then, would you really want to play a game where you got DCed every half an hour because the SE servers lost power for a little while? This server park they've got might not boot back up and be ready to run in just a few seconds after complete power loss, after all.

It's not an issue of SE not being able to afford the power, it's an issue of there not being enough power in total to power the entire nation. It doesn't matter how much you tell the government to "stick it", you can't magically make electricity out of nowhere, and thus, you're going to get brownouts.

And yes, I do believe that if the US declared a state of emergency, they could take power from whoever they wanted to power hospitals and other critical infrastructure.

Solution for all you complaining about the servers going down. QUIT THE GAME! Honestly how are you going to complain about the servers being down for a week with what is going on over in Japan.

Slowly losing faith in humanity... >.>

The only thing were I agree with OP
3 days later shutting down. I really was surprised that I could log on.. and yesterday pissed at myself for going to bed instead of leveling some more.

I will miss the game, during the few free hours I will have this week, but I fully understand it.

Let me know when you feel like an ass. (Hint: read PoL's site for information about how we won't be charged April 1 for an entire month.)

Well mr. hordecore all i can say is "Open mouth insert foot" that is one of the most stupid comments ive ever seen , i really hope you are a kid 11-14 yrs old and dont truly understand what is goin on around you. After goin thru hurricane Katrina i know what its like to totally be without , i mean totally. I didnt even make the connection that we might have to give up the game for a bit , all i saw was devastation & my mind quickly went back to my experiences. Even after the initial shock i still didnt conn the two eathquake + Japan = loss of game.I play this game everyday & will miss it too but its not "MY WORLD" !!! Sounds like you need to go AFK for a bit. Go throw a football or frisbee hang w/ your family do something productive for a change. I know for me every night will be movie night w/ my kids not just "Saturday Night" movie night. They'll be happy so will I.

During a state of emergency, individuals and companies rights are temporarily placed on hold to ensure the good of the general populace. Not only would a company that refused to follow emergency decrees face serious criminal penalties, the backlash from consumers who found that company's behavior self-serving would more than cause them to lose more revenue in the long-run.
