By all means. Let's tell them to bring the servers back up so YOU can play. This game was only made for YOU and YOU are the only person that matters in the game.

    Seriously?

Since you now have some free time on your hands, I suggest you update yourself as to what is happening in the real world and not the virtual one you apparently have your only residence in.

The Japanese government made a request. SE is honoring that request. Most of us who have traits called "logic" have no problem with this.

It is now time for you to leave the confines of your basement.

Maybe the OP is living in some Vault-Tech vault where the experiment is you don't have food and water access if you're not playing a game 24/7? Anyways be glad they have said that atm this is just for a week. Though I do personally doubt the electric shortages will mostly if not all be fixed after a week. SE is a company and know that they will be loosing money the longer the servers down and that those like myself who have a merge sometime down the line are having it pushed back even more now which for some causes some stress. So, yes the push back of the update and merge is a little annoying for some along with not being able to play; but I would rather have them take as much time needed to help out the power grid so that more important things can have the power they need. Along with SE knowing that there will be a higher chance of the servers not going down due to any black outs.
Oh and I would be 100% for an in game item that would be a sort of memorial type thing, that we could get to show our support. Especially for those who might not be able to donate money via other means at this time.

Hell guy, they are in a difficult time now, there are more important things in live than Final Fantasy, if they are turning off the servers for a week, it is because the country has requested to keep electric power usage at minimun, playing a game is nothing important compared to other things they can use there with electricity, don't be a dumbass and try to get some emphaty to those there...

This topic is odviously one-sided, while i feel bad for the japanese part of me agrees with the OP.
If it were an american company and the gov "kindly asked" them to shut down power they would have told them to suck a rail-road spike were still getting paid.

I agree with the responses to this post. Being in emergency management, the most frustrating thing is trying to save and preserve life with inconsistent power sources! We all have lives outside the game. Use this time to get in touch with REAL life, go outside and thank your lucky stars that you can do this as an option, not because you have to.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan and all those worldwide affected by the earthquake and it's tsunami.

That said, what a crock to shut down the game!!! Calamities happen every day somewhere, some more devastating to the local population than others. However, we are told over and over in their own publicity that SE is a global enterprise with major centers to serve their 3 main areas of gameplay: Japan, North America and Europe. So how about proving it and transfering game control to your servers either in the US or Europe and allowing your paying customers to continue on with their gaming lives. I seriously doubt the game would grind to a halt had this calamity occured in the west coast of the the US (earthquake or volcano). No, they would have put out some cute sympathy article and everyone not in the affected areas would continue on without interruption. Ever hear of mirror servers so backup sites can take over the workload should the main site be affected?

Will our monthly bill be reduced by 25% to compensate for this voluntary worldwide interruption of service, I doubt it as Final Fantasy customers outside Japan usually seem to be second class citizens. (ok didnt totally read SE notice b4 writing that part, my bad)

Fully agree with Square Enix's actions here.

Furisouls' respect for SE skill rises 0.5

    Good idea indeed.
