Server Disconnecting Clients - Wireshark Proof - Server sending FIN TCP flag- BUG

FFXIV server keeps sending FIN TCP flags to close the game connection and cause constant 90002 Disconnect Errors

Here are 3 packet snippets from Wireshark, which show the FFXIV server sending a Session Termination (FIN Flag) packet to my PC, which is causing the 90002 error every few min. This data shows the last packets sent from the FFXIV server to my PC during 3 different sessions where I was disconnected.

    ------------------------------------------------------
I've had this issue for over two months, and the game is unplayable, getting disconnected with 90002 and 90001 errors every few min, sometimes seconds. I've tried all of their troubleshooting tips, emailed support a dozen times, provided concrete data it is an FFXIV server/game issue with the below summarized information, begged for the issue to be escalated, and they keep telling me it is my PC or a network issue and close the ticket without any help whatsoever besides sending me the troubleshooting tips they've sent me already 10+ times.

1.) My wife plays FFXIV with NO issues on her account, and she plays on the SAME computers, on the SAME network as me. Not one disconnect. Ever. So that is 100% proof it is a FFXIV server/software issue, and not my PC/Network/Routing/Packet Loss issue.

3.) There are dozens of others on the FFXIV forums with this same issue, most of which FFXIV Technical Support team has closed without resolution, as they did my ticket and other tickets so far. They close them stating it is our network, when we have proof it is yours.

3.) I have sent data from wireshark that the FFXIV SERVERS are closing my connection by sending TCP FIN flagged packets to disconnect the connections.

4.) And yes, before all of this, I have tried all of your 'troubleshooting tips' including router ports, IE config, administrator privileges, etc , in addition to uninstalling the game. Considering point #2 above, this would make no difference anyway, but for giggles I tried every one of them anyway.

THIS GAME IS CURRENTLY UNPLAYABLE, and has been for over a month now for me. The FFXIV Technical Support team has been completely worthless in helping with this issue, even though I send concrete proof and beg for their help.

My wife and I play at the same times but her destination FFXIV IP is different, even though we are both on Midgardsormr. Months of playing at the exact same time, I've gotten disconnected hundreds of times, and she hasn't been disconnected once. And again, her route is the same as mine, only difference is the destination IP on FFXIV side that is different. My FFXIV server endpoint is 204.2.229.93, and my wife's is 204.2.229.87, but both go through the same path, including the 204.2.229.234 node.

Update:FFXIV support emailed me stating that no one else had reported this disconnect issue and no one was complaining on the forums. I told them they obviously do not know how to browse their own forums, since besides the 10+ of you that responded to my post, over 10 other posts show similar issues, and if this is only the amount of people posting, there must be a bunch more who haven't posted.

In addition to posting here, please post your own issue, to ensure they track it appropriately, and can see how many people this is affecting.

To FFXIV support: Stop telling me it's my issue when I've PROVEN it's an FFXIV game / server issue. I'll even help you troubleshoot further, if you just reach out and work with me, instead of ignoring all of my posts and emails. I've spent countless hours doing your job.

Update: Square Enix emailed me stating it is not their issue, and they will not troubleshoot this. Email details quoted below. More or less they gave us all the finger and said a majority of the players aren't experiencing this issue, so those of us that are, too bad.

Since there are no issues reported with the server directly and common connection issues are not affecting the player base as a whole, we cannot agree that the game or server is having consistent issues.

If you are still experiencing these disconnections, unfortunately, we do not have further troubleshooting to provide for you as it would be outside common disconnection conditions. Additionally, we would not be able to escalate this error further as it does not stem from the game server itself. However, if you feel this does have something to do with the game, you are free to make a bug report either in-game or on the bug report forums.

Not SquareEnix support or anything, but... out of curiosity, have you tried having your wife log in on your computer, or logging yourself in on hers? I'm assuming yes, but it isn't mentioned above, and it'd be a useful piece of info. That account A on computer A can play without issue while account B on computer B cannot, and the network topology is seemingly identical between them... well, that's useful info, but not as much as what happens with account A on computer B, and account B on computer A. That second set will make it pretty clear if the issue is the account (in which case, yes, it's almost GOT to be on SquareEnix's side) or the computer.

If you can play fine on her computer and she cannot on yours, I'd suspect something wonky with your computer's networking setup. Yes, Wireshark shows as receiving a TCP FIN, but Ethernet traffic does go through software (drivers, VPN implementations, etc.) on its way to the layer where Wireshark receives it. As Wireshark is a software-based sniffer, it's definitely possible that the traffic you see in Wireshark and the traffic across the physical adapter are not the same. Usually you'd expect those sort of things (firewalls, router rules, etc.) to use TCP RST to communicate that the connection's not going to happen, but I have seen Windows networking stuff use TCP FIN to close a connection on the Windows side when it's blocking it or shutting it off. So even with Wireshark logs showing TCP FIN, it's possible it's something with your computer and not with the FFXIV servers.

But if your account has the same disconnections on your wife's computer, while her account works fine on yours? Then yeah, I'd say the issue almost has to be on SquareEnix's side at that point, at least to some degree.

I hope this can get squared away for you, either way.

Yep, I've tried tried logging into her Windows account, and playing from there. No dice.

I've spent over 2 months troubleshooting this issue by myself, with no help from Square, so hoping if I keep posting, someone can help.

And THANK YOU so much for for providing suggestions. Seriously appreciate it. If you have any other suggestions, I'm open to anything. So frustrating not being able to play a game I've been playing for years with no issue, then after last patch, I've disconnected hundreds upon hundreds of times.

Hrm. Honestly, were it me? The next thing I'd try would be using a VPN to play. I'd recommend ExpressVPN—when I had a night where my ISP was basically cut off from the FFXIV servers for several hours due to a router somewhere between us choking on a digital hairball and causing frequent connection drops, that's what I used to still connect and play—but honestly, any VPN that's high-performance enough for gaming (which is a lot of them, these days) would be fine.

If you still get disconnected there, that narrows it down still further to SquareEnix's side, something within the server system itself. If you don't get disconnected... well, it doesn't really determine the root cause, but it would at least show that it's more likely tied to network route than to the account.

The other thing I might do would be talk to other people who are having the issue, since you mention there are others affected. If you all prove to be on the same ISP, or in the same geographic region, or on the same datacenter, or anything similar? That's still more useful data to have.

Unfortunately the data provided by Wireshark does not proof that the server closed the TCP connection to your PC. A packet with a TCP FIN flag could have come from:

    a) the application running on the server, if it actually closed the connection (or crashed and the OS closed the connection)
    b) any network node on the route between your PC and the server’s location (including your router)
    c) software running amok (brain-dead “anti-virus software”, firewalls, ...)

AFAIK there’s no sure way to figure out the source of a FIN. You could take a look at the TTL (Time To Live) field in the IP header of the last few packets received from the server prior to the FIN and the FIN packet itself. If the FIN actually came from the server, the TTL values should be identical. If the TTL of the FIN packet is different, it probably did not come from the server.

You already tried a few things with your wife’s Windows user and PC. You still get the disconnects if you use her Windows user on your PC, but with her FF XIV character everything is fine? If you use her Windows user on her PC, you also get the disconnects? If the only difference between a stable and a bad connection is the character being used, I don’t see how this could be anything on your end...

Did you try creating a fresh character (just for testing purposes)? That could clarify whether it’s somehow related to your character or your Square Enix account.

OP already mentioned the endpoint for their account and their wife's differ; if the destination IP is based on what server holds the character data and the issue crops up on the wife's computer, it could still be that there's some misconfigured rule somewhere along the line that causes issues going to that IP and not the other one. Which would mean it would be account-specific but still not the SquareEnix servers directly.

Hence the VPN suggestion, since it'll presumably eliminate one more possibility. I'm not expecting it will, but... hey, more data is always good.

BTW, there’s no need to blacken your IP address. 192.168.x.y are private IP addresses.

Yes, I get the disconnects on her Windows Account on her PC. In using WinMTR/Tracert, the route to the FFXIV server is identical, where the only difference is the final destination IP. I get disconnected hundreds of times, and she has never been disconnected once.

So if routing path is identical, VPN would not work, correct? Also, it's hard for me to pay money for a VPN on a game I've been paying for, and getting zero support. I'm very thankful for your insight, since I'm getting nowhere with Square. So again, thank you!

All other 30+ users experiencing this are across all servers... no real pattern on server, sadly.

I know I don't have to block out the IP.... did it out of habit and didn't feel like taking another screenshot.

Here's a WinMTR and ResMon screenshot from one of the disconnects, which shows no packet loss or latency issues. In case this helps.

That really sounds like a problem on Square Enix’s end, or at least with the data center they’re using.

Do you still have a Wireshark capture from a disconnect? I’d really be interested in the TTL values. If the TTL of the FIN packet is identical to the packets received before, the FIN most likely came from the server itself. But if e.g. the TTL of the FIN packet is greater by 1, it may have come from the node directly before the server (assuming both use the same TTL for packets they create).

The fact that the connection is closed by a FIN instead of aborted by a RST also points more to a problem in the data center IMO than to a problem with your router or anything else on your end.

From the data center’s point of view, both your and your wife's PCs are indistinguishable, because they both use the same public IPv4 address (which you get from your ISP). Maybe the data center’s DDoS attack detection is “misinterpreting” multiple TCP connections to your IP address as some sort of “attack” and kills one of them? But you get the disconnects also if you’re trying to play without your wife, right? (I’d also expect to see a RST in such a case instead of a FIN, or the data center’s firewall simply swallowing packets silently without any reply at all.)

Actually VPN would work fine in that scenario, because you'll be coming at those destination IPs from a different direction.

To try to put it in a more approachable analogy (albeit vastly oversimplified and not 100% accurate to how things work, but let's go with it for the sake of explanation)... let's pretend the packets are packages, and they're being driven from your house to somewhere, or back to your house from there, by a UPS delivery person. If everything is going right, UPS picks up the packages from your porch and trundles off with them, then returns with packages for you.

Now let's say that your neighbor has a delivery box on their porch as well, but it's a small one, and so they send a note to UPS saying "Hey, any packages larger than this can't fit in my porch box, please don't deliver them." But they mistype your address instead of theirs, causing only packages smaller than a certain size to be delivered to you. Now you still receive packages, but... sometimes they don't show up? This is weird, and you call UPS, but all they can tell you is that they're following delivery instructions. Does that mean the person sending you stuff wrote the address wrong? It certainly seems like it could be...

Getting a packet from point A to point B on the internet involves a lot of weird logic, including what packets will be let through or dropped and why (curse you, Maximum Transmission Size!), and sometimes rules get misconfigured. The TCP FIN could be from anything between you (point A) and your particular FFXIV login endpoint (point B). The FFXIV servers could be dropping the connection, your router could be misconfigured, etc. And since the endpoints differ, it's quite possible that you're tripping a broken rule somewhere along the path where your wife's login is not. This could be causing packets not to come back to you because something along the way went "I dunno what to do with this" and cuts the connection off, or it could be cutting you off from the server in certain situations, causing the servers to believe you disconnected and send TCP FIN just in case something along the way needs it.

And the way some of those rules are set up, it wouldn't necessarily be packet loss (which will involve retransmission of the packet in most scenarios) but something along the way deciding that entire connection is bad and arbitrarily generating the packet that says to close it. In this particular case, since the login servers are sending you to one IP address and your wife to a different one, there might be a rule out there somewhere misconfigured which involves the specific server address you are connected to.

That's the reason for the VPN. In our UPS analogy, it's like you go, "Okay, something's wrong here. Let's try getting packages delivered somewhere else" and went to go get a P.O. Box and try having the packages shipped there. In the analogy above, this works; the mis-typed address in the delivery instructions no longer applies to you. Similarly, since the packets to/from you are wrapped in the VPN layer and then tossed back out off the VPN at a different server, different rules are applying when you use one. The VPN is doing the same thing inasmuch as it lets us try a different path to the servers (different UPS drivers, as it were) so that maybe we don't hit whichever thing is responsible.

As I said, I don't actually necessarily expect a VPN to fix that. But if the issue isn't on the SquareEnix side with the FFXIV servers, it might. And if it doesn't fix it, that's definitely a strong piece of evidence that it's probably an issue with the FFXIV servers themselves. In essence, we're just fiddling with the knobs here and seeing which, if any, have effects on the situation so that we know what things are involved in the issue.

At any rate, a number of VPNs have a one-month free trial, so if you do want to follow that road it should be easy to use one just briefly to see if it changes the situation at all. (Just remember to cancel afterwards or whatever.)

Either way, hopefully someone—whether one of us or one of the SquareEnix folks—can help you track down the cause.
