Server Disconnecting Clients - Wireshark Proof - Server sending FIN TCP flag- BUG

FFXIV server keeps sending FIN TCP flags to close the game connection and cause constant 90002 Disconnect Errors

Here are 3 packet snippets from Wireshark, which show the FFXIV server sending a Session Termination (FIN Flag) packet to my PC, which is causing the 90002 error every few min. This data shows the last packets sent from the FFXIV server to my PC during 3 different sessions where I was disconnected.

    ------------------------------------------------------
I've had this issue for over two months, and the game is unplayable, getting disconnected with 90002 and 90001 errors every few min, sometimes seconds. I've tried all of their troubleshooting tips, emailed support a dozen times, provided concrete data it is an FFXIV server/game issue with the below summarized information, begged for the issue to be escalated, and they keep telling me it is my PC or a network issue and close the ticket without any help whatsoever besides sending me the troubleshooting tips they've sent me already 10+ times.

1.) My wife plays FFXIV with NO issues on her account, and she plays on the SAME computers, on the SAME network as me. Not one disconnect. Ever. So that is 100% proof it is a FFXIV server/software issue, and not my PC/Network/Routing/Packet Loss issue.

3.) There are dozens of others on the FFXIV forums with this same issue, most of which FFXIV Technical Support team has closed without resolution, as they did my ticket and other tickets so far. They close them stating it is our network, when we have proof it is yours.

3.) I have sent data from wireshark that the FFXIV SERVERS are closing my connection by sending TCP FIN flagged packets to disconnect the connections.

4.) And yes, before all of this, I have tried all of your 'troubleshooting tips' including router ports, IE config, administrator privileges, etc , in addition to uninstalling the game. Considering point #2 above, this would make no difference anyway, but for giggles I tried every one of them anyway.

THIS GAME IS CURRENTLY UNPLAYABLE, and has been for over a month now for me. The FFXIV Technical Support team has been completely worthless in helping with this issue, even though I send concrete proof and beg for their help.

My wife and I play at the same times but her destination FFXIV IP is different, even though we are both on Midgardsormr. Months of playing at the exact same time, I've gotten disconnected hundreds of times, and she hasn't been disconnected once. And again, her route is the same as mine, only difference is the destination IP on FFXIV side that is different. My FFXIV server endpoint is 204.2.229.93, and my wife's is 204.2.229.87, but both go through the same path, including the 204.2.229.234 node.

Update:FFXIV support emailed me stating that no one else had reported this disconnect issue and no one was complaining on the forums. I told them they obviously do not know how to browse their own forums, since besides the 10+ of you that responded to my post, over 10 other posts show similar issues, and if this is only the amount of people posting, there must be a bunch more who haven't posted.

In addition to posting here, please post your own issue, to ensure they track it appropriately, and can see how many people this is affecting.

Other Users Experiencing This Issue, and have already tried all troubleshooting steps.

To FFXIV support: Stop telling me it's my issue when I've PROVEN it's an FFXIV game / server issue. I'll even help you troubleshoot further, if you just reach out and work with me, instead of ignoring all of my posts and emails. I've spent countless hours doing your job.

Update: Square Enix emailed me stating it is not their issue, and they will not troubleshoot this. Email details quoted below. More or less they gave us all the finger and said a majority of the players aren't experiencing this issue, so those of us that are, too bad.

Since there are no issues reported with the server directly and common connection issues are not affecting the player base as a whole, we cannot agree that the game or server is having consistent issues.

If you are still experiencing these disconnections, unfortunately, we do not have further troubleshooting to provide for you as it would be outside common disconnection conditions. Additionally, we would not be able to escalate this error further as it does not stem from the game server itself. However, if you feel this does have something to do with the game, you are free to make a bug report either in-game or on the bug report forums.

I'll take your word for it that there wasn't any (permanent) packet loss in capture #1 and #3, but at the risk of being pedantic, I can't rule it out just from what you've shown. Only capture #2 shows the sequence number of the last client transmission prior to the server's FIN, ACK.

Edit: Actually, scratch that. I forgot that the ack number is the next expected sequence number, not the sequence number of the last received segment. None of your screenshots actually show how long its been since the server last ack'd one of your segments.

With that aside, you've indicated that you and your wife play on the same computer. So key questions:
    • Do you use the same FFXIV client installation?
    • Do you use one SE account with two different service accounts, or two completely separate SE accounts?
    • Do you use the same local Windows user account?

To more fully isolate the problem, we need to eliminate these differences. We can do that either from your end or from your wife's end, and ideally we should try both.

For example, let's suppose you separate Windows accounts, separate SE accounts, and a single (presumably non-Steam in this case) FFXIV installation. Then:

    Test A
    1. Log in to your wife's Windows account.
    2. Launch FFXIV and log in with your SE account.
    3. Log in to the game with your Midgardsormr account.
Does the problem still persist? Do you still get a different socket endpoint than your wife? Make a fresh char on Midgardsormr. Same two questions.

    Test B
    1. Log in to your Windows account.
    2. Launch FFXIV and log in with your wife's SE account.
    3. Log in to the game with your wife's Midgardsormr account.
Same questions as test A. Make a new Midgardsormr char on her account and check that, too.

If you have a single SE account with different service accounts, the process will be slightly different, but hopefully you grasp the logic. We're want to determine whether the problem is bound to the client installation, the Windows user account (and all the environmental differences that entails), the SE account, or the service account.

It could also be very illuminating to reproduce the problem, and then immediately close and relaunch FFXIV using her credentials and character without touching anything else. Exact same Windows login session, exact same running processes, etc.

Sending a FIN flagged packet does not mean the server is having problems. It means the server has not heard any acceptable traffic from your end for X number of seconds, indicating that something is wrong (hence the 'terminate session'). If this were on the server itself, one would expect a multitude of sessions dropping constantly from that particular server.

The 10 'exhibits' are not all from Midgardsomr, some aren't even in the North American data centers. Yes, you are all encountering errors, but, no, there may be no real rhyme nor reason for the problem you encounter.

Since your wife runs fine, as you say, I'd focus on what is different there. Are you using the same set of game binaries? Are you accessing FFXIV from a single system account on your PC, or do you have separate accounts? Are there environmental variables and/or application programs you have on your account that she does not have on hers? Stathol's suggestions are a good start.

I'm not convinced that this is a server issue either, but there's not enough evidence here to say that the server hung up specifically because of a timeout. Though, per my edit, there's not enough evidence to rule it out, either.

All that "FIN, ACK" means is "I acknowledge receipt of all your segments up to n-1. Also, I'm hanging up." In a vacuum, there's no way to know why the server hung up. There could be a lot of reasons for that.

The game might use TCP keepalive; I don't specifically remember if it does. But I know for sure that it uses an in-band application-layer echo/response that goes out once per second. Even if your client continues to send data and respond to other application messages, missing too many of these specific heartbeat messages, will give you the DC icon, and eventually a server-side disconnect.

But there are plenty of other reasons it might hang up. The client might have sent a malformed or otherwise ah... "suspicious" client response (not that I'm accusing anyone), or the server/load balancer could have run into a resource limit, just to name a few.

Without a raw capture dump, it's pretty much impossible to say, and any conclusion would be premature. That includes the OP's assertion that there's something wrong server-side.

OP, could you provide a screenshot with more TCP history? At a minimum I need to be able to see the last time the server successfully ACK'd on of your segments so that I can determine how much time elapsed between that and the FIN, ACK response.

Here's a longer snapshot of the Wireshark conversation. I really do appreciate your help. Square-Enix is just completely ignoring and not helping at all. After playing since the game came out, with zero issues for years, this happened following last patch a few months ago, and has not been resolved. I get disconnected constantly still, even after a complete game reinstall.

I did try to log in with my wife's Windows account, and still get the errors. I can only create one account per server, so I can't try that approach. But I have created a character on a different world, and it shows I connect to a different IP, but I have yet to spend any time playing it, as it was just created. I will update when I play on that account more to see what the results are.
