Implement it! If something small like auto sort is done, please don't wait for a content patch to put it in. Put it in as you complete the small thing! Especially when they should have been in the game the first place.

Didn't they say in the producer letter a bit back that there's some sort of flaw in the architecture that prevents them from doing elegant, single-feature implementations, and that patch 2.1 is updating stuff server side to allow them to do just that in the future?

As it is right now, my understanding was that to add anything that isn't just an adjustment, they have to shut off the servers and do a full maintenance cycle no matter how small the addition.

I think she means the inventory sort function the dev's said is just about ready for implementation. The difference being that the current auto-sort only applies to stuff coming into your inventory, it doesn't let you organise things are already in there and just leaves them wherever.

If that's the case, that is terrible.

What ancient tech are they using ?
In any case they have periodic maintenance so they can implement small patches then, what's the excuse exactly ?
They need 10 hours maint to patch a small functionality in ?

Yoshi said that they don't have an auto-sort function because they want to save server resources. And if that is the case, they could just add something client side that only show it organized.

I don't understand what's so hard or why they're even doing it server side when it can easily be done client side. They just have to sort the display order of the icons client side while the database still keeps the original table order, it's just a data display issue.

Then again they've said text takes up far more memory than graphics so there you go.

This is exactly why I want add-ons: mostly to tweak how things are presented client-side. Indeed, to sort an inventory, we don't need to use server resources, we just need to "show them sorted" with filters and whatnot on the client-side, regardless of the actual order of items server-side. Likewise you could show all your inventory tabs at once...

I understand it's hard for a studio to cater to everything that players want, and this is where add-ons come into play: to each player her own preferences.

Apparently the OP doesn't understand how software development works for massive multimillion dollar projects. It is much, much harder to push incrimental builds, especially before you're completely certain how one new feature might affect or be affected by another, especially if you seperate them to implement in different patches.

I don't know other games that do it. Not MMOs anyway.

Every MMO has major patches that include a collection of content and fixes, and sometimes minor ones for EMERGENCY hotfixes. No MMO I know of does patches to release features individually.

In fact, I'm informing you you should raise your expectations, not lower them. "other games" that aren't MMOs are smaller and have fewer features to begin with, so there is both less to break and less to implement in order to make it happen. Again, you understand nothing about what it takes to manage such a massive project as an MMO.

Tell me, when was the last time WoW made a patch to add one, meaning singular, brand new feature to the game. I Don't know of a time this has ever happened. New features are always added in major patches, not individually by themselves.

It's clear to me though, that you're intentionally not getting it in order to black-knight bash the development team. But I could be wrong. Maybe you can link me to an official patch notes page for a major MMO we've all heard of, that includes nothing but a single feature addition with no other content or fixes, and one that does this on a regular basis.

All projects are developed differently though, so even if you did, the argument "So and so does it, so they can do it too!" is a logical fallacy. (Oh yeah, and anyone who liked the post below also has a similar lack of understanding about how patching major software pojects works)

-edit again- OH, one last thing. Do you realize how many people it took to make this game happen? This game has like the world's longest credits roll in the history of gaming. It takes more than one person snapping their fingers, going "BING! feature done!" *snap* "uploading patch!"

Please provide the information you have that hasn't been made public yet that the patch has a specific date? Sort of irritated with people assuming they know when SE is bringing 2.1 out...

I'd love to have the auto-sort function in at this very moment, but if they feel it isn't ready to implement until patch 2.1? Not much we can do about it.

Exact reason because trash like GW2 is a fail from launch, hopeless junk, with every single patch overbugged, fixing 10 bugs and bosses stop to work or worst haha :D

I would be for this, except every time they put the servers down they have to do maintenance on the fix and then another maintenance on the maintenance. They have stated that the reason they are not implementing many of the changes is that they effect other things and are a larger fix than you think. I would really rather them do it all at once.

I agree.

It's almost a crime that this game wasn't released with a sort function for your inventory. Trying to find some elusive crafting item in that mess of an inventory is frustrating.

A fix is a fix. They will have to fix stuff either way. Implement it now, or later, if it breaks something it will break something. Big update or small. Their coding doesn't seem to be that great. Isn't the whole reason to have 2.0 was to bring a new system and coding(one of the main reasons.)

What mess of an inventory? Is really automatic sort so common these days people lost their abilities to sort themselves? Really? I've never had any difficulty locating any items in my inventory or retainer.

I have spent more time than I am going to admit here trying to find stuff in my inventory. I would very much like to see a sort feature. I like to spend my time playing the game. Not playing hide and seek in my inventory.

Simple reason they don't / can't do it like that. It costs alot of money and time. If this game were PC only they could throw a patch out ever 30 mins if they really wanted to and somehow had the resources to pull it off. However this is cross platform PC and ps3 soon to be ps4. There is a lengthy approval process to get something to patch via Sony's PSN or Microsoft's Xbox live sservice. Each respectively company has the right (that thay always excercise) to review the contents of a patch before it is released. With as many games as they have on these networks, this takes time. Also companies have to pay on ps3 and xboxlive to have ttheor patch distributed through that network. I'm not sure what the exact cost is per patch, but I'm sure the amount it significant.

This not only causes more effort to keep track of where everything is but also generates a high risk of releasing content with missing patches and fixes.

This is exactly how many other software companies do it. I good place to see where it would be advisable is in open source software. If the software isn't controlled then one person puts in a much needed feature. Then starts bug fixing other problems that it might have caused. While he's doing that, another dev pushes a feature in that breaks not only the first feature, but creates more bugs. Now multiple that by 10s or 100s of people. You get a code mess and it becomes a beast. A single pack of feature implementation followed by a code freeze is the most efficient way of doing this. If you think other companies do it differently, they have major problems headed their way or just ignore the bug fixes.

I haven't seen a single patch go through PSN. Yes, I downloaded the initial game through PSN, but all the patches have been through the client.

The client goes through psn to update, you simply just don't see it as such. Try to patch the game while logged out of psn and you won't be able to do it.
