Gil cost for Teleport - Throwing money up in the air while casting?

Imagine that your character is casting a magic and throwing money up in the air.. Does not make sense.

I know it's a thing to make people spend their gil (gil sink) but that does not make sense, since it's like the same of costing gil to cast a spell like Ruin I or something. I'm not a Samurai to spend Gil on skills (Throw Gil).

If they want to make Teleport cost something, should've implement something more plausible, like Ragnarok Online's Warp Portal skill, which costs a Blue Gem (bought on store) to actually being able to cast.

This could add some economy as well, since that item for teleporting could be also Mined or crafted.
I know simply spending gil rather than having an item on inventory is a lot better but it does not make any sense if you look closely.

What you guys think?

Not to sound like jerk, but honestly, why does it matter?

The point of making it cost gil, is to lower the reliance on using the spell, and instead try out exploring or using chocobo porters. Using teleport comes at a cost. Because its a faster mode of transportation, it's gonna have cost(even more so come later in game when teleport costs get higher).

The idea of using an item that can be mined and sold on the market board is a bad idea, because now you're allowing players to control other player's ability to teleport. As you see with many items on MB, the cost of such an item would be ridiculously high. So to avoid it, players would in turn spend gil on the cheap, yet still expensive, item from vendors, sinking large amounts of gil into that way. Anyway you look at it, it would be a MUCH greater money sink then it is now.

The Gil cost for using TP serves as a money sink. There's no difference between using Zeny to purchase the Blue Gem in RO and using it to TP, and using Gil to TP. It's working fine as is.

You didn't actually go talk to the NPC who met you when you first went to the aetheryte at L1, did you? >_>
In a narrative sense, gil is actually spent as... Toll.
Literally, every aetheryte camp needs money not just for maitenance, but also because setting up an aetheryte camp is very costly and most of them had to be repaired/salvaged after the calamity, so they are deep in debt with ul'dahn investors, and excerting a toll from everyone who uses their aetheryte as a gate (paying on exit since you can enter anywhere but exit on a gate) is a way they use to pay back their debt.

It's explained by an NPC at level 1 if you remembered to talk to him! He even mentions the true physical cost of teleporting, which is an energy known as anima, yet the cost on the body is so minimal that it doesn't really matters how much you have or how much you spend.

Actually on RO you can get the Blue Gem by killing monsters or buying at npc also, pretty cheap (but constant value).

I actually didn't bother reading the starter text (I started the character on beta, so I wanted to maximize my little time on playing rather than reading text).

Thanks for pointing out, I'll start another character just to read it's explanation, this one you provided is actually interesting.

Unless you're in a monster hurry, you don't have to teleport. I usually use my chocobo or airship then chocobo to get where I want to go. I'm not usually in such a hurry that I can't take my time to get somewhere.

No need! The NPC actually is sitting by the aetheryte, he only gives like 5 lines of explanation when you reach the aetheryte the first time and then goes "I'll be over there if you want more information" and if you go talk to him he says all that.

Have you ever used the market board before? greed run rampant on there, as do RMTs. And yes, you can buy at vendor, or farm for them yourself, but that doesn't stop the fact that the market board can and will control things.

I was already thinking i am the only one.... I agree with the op. I mean, yes, i know its explained why we have to pay, but the way we pay for it doesnt make sense. Like where does the money go when we teleport? We are not giving it to anyone, they just disappear from our pockets. Buying crystals for teleportation would make more sense, and we could buy them in every camp, which would make even more sense.

So you accept the fact that you can be magically teleported from on place to another, but you can't accept the fact that your gil is magically teleported out of your pocket to whoever collects the gil?

Whats makes these crystals make so much more sense? the same questions can be made about your crystals. what happens to them when you teleport. Do they break? do they turn to dust? are they the actual portal? or do they just magically disappear?

I did like sometimes how 1.0 did it, instead of it costing gil it cost a resource (anima i believe) that would regenerate slowly. It had its issues, but the gil costs of some are just way too much to make sense.

The further away you are, the more it costs to teleport there. Makes sense enough.

We would just need one small crystal and we would have to fill it up for money to teleport. We teleport using magic, of course, and yes, i can accept that explanation. And yes, i COULD accept the explanation about the money being teleported, but it is not explained in any way in the game.
Just because its a fantasy world doesnt mean that the world shouldnt make sense and the things shouldnt be explained.

Actually, it doesn't need to all be explained. That's part of being a fantasy, not all of it needs to make sense. There doesn't need to be a perfect outline for everything. If there was, it would remove all allure and mystery to be had.

To be fare, nothing in any fantasy world makes any sense. Why are there so many humanoid species existing together, when nature plays to survival of the fittest, and races like Lalafel would have been killed off by the stronger races. Why are Mi'quote considered a cat people race, when they don't resemble anything like cats(they don't posses cat ears, at all, and they're far to human-esq in appaerance). point is, not everything needs to make perfect sense. And worrying about something so miniscule, makes no sense either.

Yes, and that explains just as much about what it does, as why you have to pay gil to teleport.

Lol I whent broke last night teleporting too much... but yeah I feel like it should maybe be on a timer or something and maybe time gets reduced by killing monsters and doing quests?

You all making this game like real world with logic explanation. But tell me , why we need logic explain when we already in fantasy! ? IT IS A FINAL FANTASY !! Hello ~.~ There an NPC when you first encounter it.

I rarely teleport anywhere. It's such a small world and so easy to sprint. Plus I like to save my gil for anything I may want later on in the game ;)

Wait, so your complaint was basically, this doesn't make sense (which is really a lore issue), but you didn't read the text that explained the lore of the game... So your opinion on this subject was negated in its entirity. It really bothers me when someone complains about lore, or lack of, but doesn't take the time to actually read all the NPC, quest, dungeon, leve, etc. dialog that the game provides.

Lore or not, still does not make sense money disappearing out of nowhere. But it's a bit more acceptable if the game tries to explain, even if that does not make sense. Why? Because you see that they at least try explain hahah

Regards it disappearing out of nowhere. Well, you can only do so much for the game's lore before you start having a severe impact on gameplay. Imagine every time you used your teleport you got halted for a moment to stop and pay the toll, worse in case you don't have the required money that you're forced back to your return point.
Unfortunately this is a point where a bit of immersion had to be sacrificed for a smoother gameplay

Well, if you notice, they do that with airships, but in a LOT worse manner:
You pay > loading > go to the other side to board > loading > animation of airship leaving > loading > animation of airship arriving > loading > get out of the place > loading > arrived at city.

That's why I only use teleport, it's a pain to have all this useless loadings.(It's just like Waking Sands, why two damn loadings to arrive Minfilia's office.)

See, that's part of the reason why the airships are cheaper than teleports, same with chocoporters.
They are bothersome AND takes times. We already have the time-consuming, cheaper travel methods, and teleporting is the fast and costly one

I actually use chocoporter if travel is 1~2min (good time to go bathroom, stretch, etc).
Airship would be nice if didn't had so many loadings, my pc is 4years old, loadings take time xD


Well, I don't feel teleport as expensive (only if compare with choco/airship). Max it cost me was 200 and something. lv50 is so much more expensive?

I liked anima a lot too. Thought it made a lot of sense. I also remember the *constant* whining on the forums, "Please just charge us gil to teleport! It'll be so much more friendly for the people who don't have a lot of time to play the game!" (which made absolutely no sense; since anima accumulated whether you were playing or not, it was inherently favorable to people who couldn't get a lot of play time in--which was one of the things I liked most about it) Well, folks, you got it. I'm only level 39 and I'm already seeing teleports in the 500 range depending on how far I want to go. That's not terrible, but it adds up, especially when Minfillia only ever uses the linkpearl she gave you to tell you to come see her face to face so she can send you somewhere that was closer before you went to see her.

Because it's the main quest hub after level 20 so they break up into two zones to avoid zone overloading problem.

I can tell some people never played FFXI where you had to pay a mage sometimes up to 5,000 gil to teleport you around and sometimes there was no mage around to teleport you. FFXI didn't have the job change ability (when I played it up to 4 years ago) like FFXIV does. I could'nt change to a mage job to teleport myself then turn right around and change to the job I wanted to go play as. I had to pay for a teleport and shout and shout and shout. I love how it is now. It is PERFECT!
