I bought this game 2 days ago and haven't been able to play properly yet because I'm forced to use a US server (massive lag as I'm in EU).
How often do square alter which servers are open for new characters?

honestly, it won't matter.
both the NA and EU servers are located in the same place (Canada)
Oh ok, thanks for the quick response. A little short-sighted of Square there. Oh well I guess I'll try to play through the pain.
ALL Eu/Na Server are Located to Montréal (Canada)
Blame it on their EU and USA Headquarters not wanting to house their own datacenters.
All servers for NA and EU are located in the same place, so technically, both regions share the same servers. It doesn't really matter which you choose.
If you're having lag issues, it's likely your internet connection, cause I have several friends in the EU that have no connection issues at all, and i had asked the community about 3 weeks ago to see if EU Players had bad times do to server location, general consensus was that everyone was fine with pretty much no issues.
Why do you assume that The people that answered me, and my friends are not level 50? Seriously, wtf is with people acting like levels make a difference in what you do or do not know. What is this, fricking WoW, or CoD, were the delusional think that being level 80, or 10 time prestige makes a difference in knowledge.
What does level have to do with it though? You're acting like being lvl 50 automatically says that you know whether or not other players are experiencing lag or not. I made a thread several weeks ago, asking EU players how their connections were because of where there servers were located. Pretty much all of them said no problem, and several of them were *gasp* lvl 50. I have several friends that live in the EU, and they have no issues.
So tell me, what does being lvl 50 have to do with latency and lag issues?
The lag is mostly a problem with endgame content like hard mode primals due to their difficulty. Thus the requirement to be level 50 before you can judge how bad it really is.
But saying that there is no additional latency from the EU to a server in Canada doesn't make any sense either way. Of course we have more latency over here than those closer to the server - the laws of physics demand it! However, I think the biggest issue is not the lag caused by server distance, but the lag caused by server performance. If I remember correctly, the servers only check player positions 3 or 4 times per second, and that's just not enough for the current endgame content. They should either improve the servers or adjust the time we have to dodge AoEs.
Until primals fight you can't really experience much of server-client synchronization problems.
Not being able to stun Ifrit in time at his eruption skill while pressing shield bash at 50% of the cast is normal?
Maybe it's normal for you, but it's surely not normal for me.
I'm not talking about lag (lag spikes, jumping ping, packet loss, etc.), i'm only talking about really existing latency (ping).
What is 250 ms in reality? It is 0.25 seconds. Or 1/4 of the second.
Double it, because you need at first to see beginning of "eruption".
500 ms? Half a second? Eruption cast time is somewhere around 1.5 seconds. 1 second time to react for EU players.
And if you are in US? 50 ms ping, 50 ms after bash press, 0.1 seconds total. 1.4 seconds time to react for US players. On "EU" (lol) servers.
See the difference.

BS, absolute BS. Ever been in a fate with 20-30+ people? yeah, these happen at ALL stages of the game. Saying your lag and latency issues are restricted to just 8 man parties, is ridiculous.
My point still stands, being lvl 50, makes NO difference on whether or not you know what true latency or lag issues are, when you can experience it at as low a level as 1. And fyi, I have experienced 8 man party latency and lag issues, and it's no where NEAR as bad as it gets in fates with large numbers of players. The only thing that 8 man+ party instances do differently, is that the server attempts to sync people to help alleviate connection issues, So in all honestly, you're not even really experiencing serious latency or lag issues during HM primals or 8 man+ raids. So that whole point is STILL moot.
Debunk BS "im lvl 50 and know better then you" logic, and all I get is lame comebacks that signify defeat.
Face it, you're wrong. Once you guys stop thinking that being lvl 50 automatically means you're better then others, then you'll start thinking properly. Being in the US or EU makes no difference in an argument in which you have no logical, or factual basis to stand on. I've done the primal fights, and I've had good connections, and bad connections during them(REALLY bad ones), both standard and Hm versions, and I'm in the US with an connection speed that trumps anything offered in Europe, so again, you're point is rendered moot. Stop thinking that you are better/know better then everyone else because you are lvl 50, and start thinking with a proper community driven mindset. Putting yourself on a pedestal is more of a hindrance to the community then anything.
Stop thinking that, stop thinking this...
Just face the fact that http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...-fix-something still exists.
If you want to feel real gameplay of EU players you can try using VPN in UK/DE/FR/etc and logging into game. You'll get some kind of revelation.
I'm not saying that there isn't server problems, or people having lag and latency issues, I'm saying you, and anyone else that claims that these problems don't exist, or people don't know what 'real connection issues' are until level 50, are full of it. You act as though you know everything there is to know about the internet and how connections work, yet you fail to use logic, and instead say "you're not end game, you don't know jack, gtfo till your endgame". That's not how things work.
There are server issues, there are also people that have crappy internet speeds. Stop acting like you have to be lvl 50 to know what actual connection issues feel like, because they occur at EVERY stage of the game, and some people have them MUCH worse then others, regardless of whether they're NA, EU or JP.
Stop, Hammertime!
This thread is about why EU players are forced to play on NA servers and what kind of problems it brings. Not about lag, crappy connection, bad ISPs. It's about unremovable delay.
And surely this is not about mine attitude towards whatever kind of players there are. There are still those who are bad even after getting lvlcap.
P.S. your signature is mauvais ton. But this thread is not about it.
