This has already been addressed by Yoshi P. Read Dev posts before wasting server space. The current goal is server stability, then the afk can be addressed. Its not some magical fix be good button they didn't press. There is coding, decoding, uploading and implementation. It has to recognize what an afk player means, instead of arbitrarily booting you if you have been online for 15 minutes.
Does that mean I don't think its needed? No. But I would rather see an increase in the amount of servers and a balancing out of the population than the dev's working on an afk ticker first.
the reason people started AFKing to begin with is because SE had to lower the server cap due to the duty finder being overloaded. fixing the server problem will get rid of most of the AFKer's since everybody will likely be able to play whenever they want instead of having to battle with 1017.
AFKers have never been the cause of this problem; only a symptom.
you realize the only reason people AFK was because they couldnt log in with the very strict login restrictions. if they can get in instantly all the time they will log out. AFK only started when it got hard to log in. fix it so we can always log in and 95% of the AFK will log off.
fk the afk kicker make the server hold ass loads more people and bam good forever
More children not knowing what they are talking about smh
Didn't know you worked at Square.
Dude, AFK people are NOT THE PROBLEM!
The PROBLEM is Yoshida and the DEV not 100% prepared with providing enough Servers and Services that initiates the LOAD BALANCING for each Server which also include the QUEUE system and Duty FINDER.
AFKer are not the problem.. But they are adding to the problems....
In FFXI the reason you weren't kicked when connected to the server was because your character could sell items in a bazaar which people checked your character to see which made logging off not be able to do this.
In FFXIV there is no such bazaar system. I don't really mind the servers being full, at least someone is actually interested in a Final Fantasy game is satisfaction enough. They do need to fix login issues but if you know a trick or 2 you can be logged in within 5-15mins of first try. The game just launched you have to be patient and expect a surge of gameplay, it will settle down when people find bigger and better things to do with their lives.
I can't stand when games log me out for inactivity. If I want to go AFK and come back 10mins later nothing should of changed and that is the way FFXI players like it. Its such BS when you have to type in your password, type in your security code, and then wait for all the BS to load up when all I did was go afk for 10mins to go take a gd poop... or better yet when your standing next to that entrance for 15mins waiting for that last guy to start a event and the whole party gets auto kicked...wouldn't that be awesome. lol fail.
No sir, they're not. All they're doing is adding frustration of players... Whether there are AFK players or 0 AFK players, there is a HARD CAP on how many concurrent connection are allowed per server. That is an infrastructure / hardware issue. As has been prior stated, when SE fixes their hardware capabilities and loosens the cap on concurrent connections, there may still be AFKers, but they won't be noticed because everyone will be able to play.
You'll find out in roughly 8 hours, before that believe what you will.
I guess we'll just have to wait a few measly hours to see before making any rash judgements.
Speculation's all well and good, but really this is just being borderline paranoid.
And I know borderline paranoid.
Actually they are... When SE stated they are limiting the number people logged in at a given time.. The AFKers are taking up them slots doing nothing... Which in turn gets people spamming the login server... You know the funny thing is the JP server their culture is respecting others they log off at the end of the day... Opening a slot...
So yes the AFKer are adding to the issue and most of them know it...
It has been on my mind for a few days now, but I wonder at what point the bing phrase "load balancing" became so mainstream? I mean, I have used the term once or twice, when appropriate, but it seems very unlikely that the number of people using the term actually know what it means; or more specifically, what it entails. Load balancing requires a dedicated process on the server or - more likely on large processes - an entire server to handle job scheduling, memory optimization, inter and intra server data traffic, and any number of small tasks that I have forgotten. All of that requires dedicated maintenance, development time, and - most importantly - actually represents a nominal hit in performance. The more balancing you have, the more processing time is devoted to managing all of the various tasks and messages have to be routed to more and more complex subsystems. That isn't to say that load balancing isn't a good thing; but it's a tool not some magic wand you wave over the bloody servers to make them go faster.
As an aside, after a quick Google search (and someone with a more intimate knowledge of the subject matter can and should refute me), it looks to me - according to this fairly scetchy survey site - as if WoW concurrency numbers are slightly less optimistic than some have been proselytizing.
Regardless of it's it's respectful of others, people are doing it, and I don't blame them at all. It's only an issue because there aren't enough slots for everyone who wants to play.
SE didn't/doesn't really want to spend the money to upgrade the servers.
From their point of view, this is the kind of problem that should have fixed itself a long time ago.
People who stick around through this are more likely to sub.
Those who don't, already paid.
You know the funny thing...?
That would happen anyways if there were ZERO afk players right now. You know why people are spamming the login servers, because there is a cap on allowed concurrent connections. It doesn't matter if the players are sitting in inn's or running lvl 50 dungeons... If EVERY SINGLE PERSON logged in was playing, the EXACT SAME ISSUE would still be there, because SE's servers can't handle the necessary numbers reliably. So your login server spamming argument is a red herring. It's a falsetto, because it's true, but it would be true even if they didn't have a single AFKer on any of the currently 50 servers. So no, AFKers are not "adding" to any problem. Only to the frustration of players.
Why do most of you just assume that after the maintenance everything will be just fine and dandy? I hope it is but I for one am not going to believe it's fixed till I see it for myself. With that said I'm glad they are at least trying to fix the issues and are starting to update us on the status a little more then they did during early access.
If people are willing to AFK, they are willing to get a mouse-clicker...then what?
Just got in and trying to catch up, the maintenance stats 5pm pst / 8pm est. and finishes when again?
3am PST if I recall.
AFKing was a common thing in 1.0 . A lot of LS's would /sit or whatnot in Uldah and stay logged
Ill be jumping on as soon as servers are back up and then go afk to finish sleeping. Wake up at 6am and play until 8am. Go to work and hang out with friends and finally get home around 7pm. Play until 10pm until I go afk until I wake up the next morning. Repeat.
Don't trust SE to have the problems fixed so wont risk logging out until I know it is.
All ye with to much faith that everything will be fixed. Where is that faith coming from. Have to earn my trust and SE hasn't. I expect servers to become stable only when people give up and quit playing.
I'll run in circles to keep from being disconnected when I am AFKing ... Think I can't rig a joystick lol..
Seriously, I don't think anyone, except employees at square-enix really KNOW what is going on or what the plan is, and thats all fine and good as that's what we pay them for. Increase space you say?? Sounds like a plan to me!!
As far as AFKing.. that will never end, as said in previous posts its symptom of something else in alot of cases....
Imagine your playing final fantasy, you just logged in, your guild event starts in 15 minutes, but you got to go ! Can't hold it any more! Unfortunately, you took too long for undisclosed reasons, so the AFK timer booted you !
Why not just log back in ?? Rubberbands come in handy, if your that worried about it..
I am not...
How do you expect them to test extreme server loads without anyone on the server? What a dumb statement.
Unfortunately, the OP is right. The AFKers are going to continue to be rude, selfish, entitled brats. They're still going to take up 3,000 slots from people in other countries while they're sleeping, ruining the experience for everyone.
SE needs to at least restart the servers every 12 hours. That's an extremely easy step they can take to at least alleviate the problem. Don't even need to do any coding on an AFK timer.
That's not going to happen. People are running dungeons and doing important things in game and they need to worry about being thrown off. The afk'ers aren't really that big of a deal. I'd rather them get rid of the gold sellers and spamming bots, that will clear up A LOT of room.
We just need more server for NA/EU, since we had more player over JP. at the current issue, some NA/EU player stay in JP server to avoid most server issue. It doesn't make sense to limit the server 1-1 ratio Japan vs global, Final Fantasy Title are name long reach oversea.
Actually any good MMO has daily or nightly restarts. Not just for afk and such. But like any computer, memory gets full. And since ram only clears when the system shuts down. Restarts on a normal schedule are important for stability... Play defiance they rarely restart. And then tell me you don't want them...
Are yall still reading this...? If so, why? Kid finds forum page, gratz. Kid tries to pretend like he knows what he is talking about...futile attempt. Kid sparks replies which should never have gone past 1st reply. Wasting of site memory for something so trivial, Success!
so yeah how about that 1017
