We want 3D polygonal battle effects [dev1037]

The proposed change to increase size is good for right now. But we want to see 3D polygonal battle effects. All the buffs in FFXIV look great:

-Protect
-Shell
-Stoneskin
-Rampart
-Effect of getting hit through protect

Great effects!

All offensive magic effects look flat and 2D.. resize isn't going to fix it. Please redesign it to look like great 3D elemental magic.. this is 2011 for Christ's sake! We don't want SNES graphics again now! We've been imagining great spell effects since the 1980's.. come on! Look at this stuff right here:

I am in agreement here. 3D effects would rox

Are you sure Last Airbender is the greatest demonstration of what you want? Even in 3D, it was really just 2D layers with space between them, the picture was overly false due to the process of turning 2D shots into 3D images combined with the dark glasses, and I STRONGLY prefer Yoshi-P or even Tanaka over M. Night Shyamalan as director.

Damn it, can I not say 3D without meaning 3D movies? I'm not talking about glasses, I'm just talking about 2D sprites vs polygonal 3D. lol @ your last comment though, haha.

Those pics definitely aren't the best examples, but we see your point.

There are already multiple threads and hundreds of posts about the lackluster animations/effects. But I agree that protect/shell looks pretty decent.

I'm so touched by your mention of the hundreds of other posts.. let me point something out though. This is about polygonal graphics. It's the difference between something that looks like a fake overlay and something that looks like real elements, like in the movie stills above.

Good luck in making polygonal fire and air effects.

Oh you are saying you prefer a 2D photoshop overlay for your fire effect? Why don't you go make a thread called 2D Photoshop overlay fire effects then?

3D fire and air effects are doable. Just take the Ultima spell for instance cast in FF7, Bahamat Zero's Tetra Flare, Sephiroths super nova. Those may not be as sexy as we want them to be, but 3D spell effects are certainly doable.

Sure and when 3D effects will come out, you will whine about lag/freezes and others. I think there are just enough polygones for the Crystal Tools. Don't make it explode please.

I agree. This would be awesome, especially for the higher level spells.

Every spell in FF11 looked epic and cool. The higher level ones looked REALLY awesome and epic, especially some of the weapon skills. I actually forget that abilities/spells/ws/etc have animations in this game, most of the time I'll use something and go "wait, did that go off? -checks my action bar to see if its on cooldown-".

I just wanna say that most of the air and fire gfx that have been used in ff series have been particle effects. The after mentioned abilities like Supernova and Bahamut ZERO from FFVII are not really the best example. Sephiroth's ability is not only ridiculous, but it's really all an after effect. Bahamut's ability isn't any different either. After the beam of energy lands on the ground, it then creates an explosion. Now fire abilities aren't really about explosions but rather emiting fire from the user.

If the user instead used meteor then it would apply accordingly. Meteor hits the target, causing an explosion.

I do wish certain effects to be more energetic, cause as of now all we have are just bits of sound to pump the effect more. Even the sounds are a bit lacking. If you compare the past final fantasy games in sound effects to ffxiv, you'll notice it lacks a specific charm. The game is still good, but it's lacking those similar chimes and jingles even in the battle effects. I will use this as an example.

You'll notice that after the first effect, when the shield pops up, there's this crisp clean crystal sound effect. With it, it creates this charming final fantasy atmosphere. Along the video there are various other examples showing very different and similar sounds that could be recognized through out the series.

So my suggestion is to not only to bump the effects, but the sounds as well. What do you guys think?

Great suggestion, and I think you should make a topic about it with the battle effects dev tag. The sounds for quite a few of the character skills/weapon skills/magic attacks and buffs do need improving, or at least have a stronger punch to them.

I like the enhancement of the battle effects. I hope the [visual] enhancement will also include vivid additional animations for particular battle effects. Example: BATTLE REGIMENS!!!!!!! Please make these combos (or some of the combos) visually distinctive--instead of just pink limbs, weapons, and monsters.

Particle, polygon, whatever, I just want to see 3D objects on screen where appropriate, for instance: earth, ice, water. Maybe particle would be better for fire, air, and thunder. Make the particle effects as good as polygonal effects. Most of all, get rid of 2D effects!!

Also some incredible sound effects are welcome too!

I didn't say that I wanted 2D effects idiot, I said that fire and air are very hard to make look 3D, water, stone, ice and lightning are all relatively easy to make in 3D, but fire and air both act like or are gases how do you render that without it looking solid or 2D.

The only way is to have an advance physics engine and that's would just be eating resources on already unoptimised code.

Fire is plasma. You posted in opposition to my thread, I assumed you supported the crappy 2D effects we have now. If you support better graphics why didn't you say so?

I'd like to see them add more battle animations first, but this is a second thing to do.

Battle Effects like in final fantasy X. Something that whats use to cast that magic again. or add more then one battle animations for each magic that.

Mmm I agree that there is a lack of visuals for spells ^^; Everything in the game looks so good then bam... I like the visuals for things like Protect, Shell, Shock Spikes, Stone Skin, but all the elemental spells look dull. I want to see things like Lightening coming down when I use Thunder, and more of a burst when I use fire, etc... I realize some things are quite difficult to make all 3D, but having a mix of the two would be nice ^^. Not sure how hard this would be, but by the looks of the rest of the games visual quality, should be attainable.
