I don't think it would work in this game with the way summons exist. Maybe being able to call one to do a single move and then leave would be fine but go do or watch the R38 mission and you'll see.
Summonner would be nice. Now question what shall becone summoners weapon? Cane/wands are already taken. some kind of talismans? Cane with piece of aetheryte in it ( as teleporting is done by ether currents, maybe summoning would have somethig to do wih that?
There are some elemental creatures in game, so we can hope:)

I think Summon is a must have for any Final Fantasy game ^,^)b.
As for it not working with the game now, I think the Team could come up with a really innovative and fun story-line for the Job/Class to work as soon as all the other kinks in the game are fixed.
I'm against summoner....I am not, however, against a Beastmaster type class, Puppetmaster, or Dragoon type class, as I feel they would work well, especially with them redoing the battle systems. Summoner though, as stated above, wouldn't work unless it was a one attack basis.
My question is why navi needs to be in any Zelda game to begin with? The argument Nyrumi made was that Summoner should be in every FF game, yet was not even in the first FF game to begin with.

Tanaka talked about adding Summoners in a expansion awhile back ago. obviously things have changed and hes no longer in charge but i'm certain you'll still be seeing Summoners eventually.
Summoners are a must have the way i see it. EVERYONE wants to see the famous FF Summons. The battle system is changing alot. and even at this moment they could easily be intergrated. the way i see it NOT having a summoner is a slap in the face to fans across the world. doesnt matter how they do battle just not having that class in the game is just wrong. and nothing is wrong with pet classes. your only limiting the game by not wanting these types of classes. and everyone knows that FF has become to be known for its awesome stories summons and intriguing characters. so the way i see it not having summon is a sin.

Even with the revisions to the battle system there's no way that they could put summoners in the game the way they were in XI. The connection and power structure between the summoner and the summoned is completely different this time around, it wouldn't work. Again having them come in and do a single attack may work though again for story reasons this would also probably be a bit difficult.

On Summoners: Bahamut actually was in the first FF game -- though not as a summon. But still it predates the first appearance of Chocobos (FFII), which I'm sure you would oppose in FFXIV as a matter of consistency, amiright?

it's going to be added in expansions, more than likely. They said quite a long time a go that they have no short-term plans for pet classes.
SMN was a broken job in FFXI and it was never fixed. It was however possibly the most entertaining job: epic Lv20 solo battles with mini espers or cool team battles against big espers, the ability to Magic Burst skillchains, many different abilities and elements to use, lots of breathtakingly powerful Astral Flows..... it required much skill and cold blood and was actually fairly powerful, but simply didn't have its own role in a party.
I would like to see a SMN made with the same mentality, but this time around with a proper role and place in a group.

The whole concept of summons post-FFX probably wouldn't work as well in FFXIV unless they're making some sort of compensation for it in the newly revamped(for the second time) battle system.
I agree that I'd rather a return to old-school "single fire" summons, as well as use of other summons such as Quetzacoatl, Siren, and Brothers.
On the topic of summons, it'd be interesting to see if they'd be willing to incorporate Doom Train or Eden into the storyline in some fashion.
We obviously also need Gilgamesh in some capacity.

Summoner Has SOOOOOO much potential in FFXI it was a support wasnt broken but just used as support with minor healing. But there is SO much they can do with summoner this time around and they should have learned from FFXI. dont base this summoner convo of comparing it to the FFXI summoner because it is VERY different game now. But the is no reason why FFXIV will not have a summoner. its a obviously VERY potentially awesome class. and like i said not having pet classes is only limiting...
Also on the topic of single use attack style summons that would be just fine as well like i said i wanna see summoner i DO care how they impliment it but i will say i think this new development team is good enough to think of a good way to bring them in. wether single target attacks while they walk with you like a pet or a cast summon and dissapear style of play. but just so many good summons in FF it would be a shame for them to go to waste. and i would be highly upset.

^ what evangela said is pretty much the initial thoughts of most of anyone who first thinks of a FF game yes the first 2 didnt have but that was before they knew what was good for them. lol. not saying those games were bad. just saying there is a reason why they have kept them in every game since then.
Right and they ARE in this game but the circumstances are drastically different. Again, R38 main story quest explains a lot.
you know in the other summoner thread somebody came up with an amazing way to implement summoners, you should take a look at it. the way he described putting it in it made it very old school final fantasy...I was just worried about the type of lag it might cause.
ok i will deffinatly check that out for sure i wasnt aware there was another thread about summoners when i made this but i will look to see. i would like this thread to stay as a convo on wether people want it implemented and if so how and if not why not but yeah i will deffinatly check that out.
Also BTW guys. out of the summons they have introduced so far in their games which ones would you like to see show their face in XIV?
I could see summons being used as a one time attack, kind of like your 2hr ability in FFXI. You pick a summon (you can change summons every now and then if they granted your their strength) and use it in combat in those tough situations where it can save the day.
I would very much like to see SMN come back because it's a very important aspect of every Final Fantasy game (imo) but as it has been said, it's hard to picture players walking around with Ifrit or Garuda this time around (the main storyline explains why I'm saying this).
I never played SMN much in XI but it was a vital part of the game.
PS: SMN wasn't broken, what happened is you probably saw terrible summoners... which isn't surprising considering half of them didn't have a clue.
Tie it into Battle Regimens IMO... plus it would be hard to balance the badassitude of summoned demigods if classic PVP were ever implemented =3

When they introduce more class specific gear, maybe Genji gear will be for a certain title like Warrior or Dark Knight, and to obtain it you have to go through a quest line where you have to fight Gilgamesh a few times.

Nothing I've posted has stated what SquareEnix should or shouldn't do. I have merely voiced an opinion of what I'm in favor of and what I'm strongly against. If you can't handle it, or take something like that too personal, you need to get off the schoolbus and maybe try to grow up, mkay?
I want summoner back but this "show up and leave" crap is so pathetic. If you want it to be instant effect why not just give new regular spells to casters. Beleive me summoning an avatar every 10 sec so it can cast its spell would become annoying visually pretty fast for everyone.
Seriously people played SMN in 11 cause they could control the avatar like pets and having a giant like Titan running next to you was cool specially when it was new.

Which would not work with how summons exist in FFXIV. Judging by the Limsa story and the R38 story (and some before that) the Summons are never going to bend to our will. In fact they're using others more than anything. Not going into specifics for sake of spoilers but go watch the story missions if you haven't and want to know.
