How does one pronounce "Peiste"?

This question crossed the minds of myself and a fellow LS member while we were murdering them in Halatali leves since we both pronounced it differently.

People i'm with usually pronounce it as paist.
But i say peestee..

Cause i'm a rebel.


And i think it's cuter..

When people see peiste and try to say the name, I think of "The ass who is level 90+ blocking my way to Revenant Toll"

Well I say something closer to 'Pasty' personally...however, I believe the correct pronunciation is is closer to Peest (Like rhymes with beast)

I've always pronounced it Pee-est-ay, but I am almost positive that I am pronouncing it incorrectly.

'ei' usually sounds like 'ay' as in 'weigh'. So perhaps it is Pay-stee, Pay-stay, Pay-steh, Paste?

After Googling the word, I found this: Cnoc na Péiste, which is perhaps where they got the name, since they're supposed to be mountain-dwellers (I think?).

That part of the mountain name is pronounced something like "Pee-stuh", probably with very little emphasis on the 'uh', almost akin to the "Peest" mentioned above.

Kind of like how you'd pronounce "paste" but with a bit of an I trilled in there... Like if you were going to say paste in a bad fake british accent.

I was actually curious about this awhile back and tried to look the word up. The closest I could find that actually fit the context was Peist Given that it is spelled there with no E at the end I just figured I would just ignore the E myself.

Though if you look at one of the links on that page for stories containing Peists, it shows it written (in gaelic) as Payshtha (linn-na Payshtha or lake of the peist) which would probably make for an acceptable pronunciation too.

I say it like Pest =P Lol after doing the magian trial in FFXI to kill like 800 I REALLLLY hate thems ; ;

Relevant to my interests. I pronounce it /'paɪs.tə/, if you're down with the IPA. (Roughly, "PICE-tuh", where the "uh" is the reduced vowel you find at the end of, say, the word 'comma'.) But practically everyone I know pronounces the word differently.

OOH OOH can we make a thread for pronunciation in general? Actually this subforum might already have answered this question and I don't want to derail, but while we're at it how in the world do you pronounce Goobbue? I actually asked Tanaka-san in person at one point (long story) and I think he pronounced it 'goo-boo' but it's been a really long time and I have tarubrains, so I can't clearly remember and that sounds so silly to me. (Then again with a name like Goobbue it's gotta be silly.)

Hello all!

As you all know, FINAL FANTASY XIV is a veritable cornucopia when it comes to oddly spelled words (I believe, 'keyboard mashing' was a colorful term one player used). In the past, there have been multiple questions on how to pronounce certain names, and I've tried to cover a few of those in Localization posts. However, after discussing it with my fellow voidsent peers, we've decided that it is high-time that something a bit more comprehensive be introduced, especially with ARR and a whole new batch of players on their way.

Over the next few months, we hope to provide you all with some pronunciation guides for NPC, place, monster, and item names. If possible, I'd also like to get up some actual audio files, but if that proves impossible, we'll at least get some IPA action in there.

If you have any words we'd like to cover, use this thread as a place to list them up.

P.S. (Peiste is an Irish word for 'serpent' and to the best of my knowledge is pronounced roughly 'peace-tuh'. It is interesting to note that the Japanese rendering of the word comes out sounding like 'paste')

P.S.S. (Goobbue is, in fact, pronounced 'goo-boo,' as Teakwood mentioned.)

I'll have to remember that by thinking of the Little Caesar's guy.

Thanks very much Fernehalwes, my friend and I were both incorrect! My latin heritage was seeping through my pronunciation of it (pay-ee-stay), it looks vaguely Spanish. His was pie-stee.

To tell you the truth ever since you guys came out with the information on Roegadyn names I haven't had any issues figuring out how to say NPC names.

I'll cover this one in the future as well, but I wanted to reply right away because leve is such a major term.

Here on the team, we've been pronouncing the word 'leave'. In fact, 'leve' is an archaic spelling of the word 'leave' that was used between 13th and 16th centuries.

Why look! Here's an example from Fitzherbert's The Book of Husbandry (1523)

"Seldom doth the housbande thryve withoute the leve of his wyfe."

Preach it Fitzherbert!

The reason behind using this word in the first place can be seen here in the in-game explanation given by leve distributors:

"In a city as large as this one, there will always be those who are looking for someone willing to assist them with their troubles. Instead of doing the searching on their own, they often come to us. We, in turn, document their petitions and then offer them to our clientele―fine men and women such as yourself. These tasks are what we like to call "levequests," and if someone happens to be interested in accepting one, we present them with a guildleve that is used in conjunction with the quest. Guildleves are, in effect, passes which grant their bearers "leave" to perform various actions which might otherwise be prohibited. These actions include, but are not limited to, the collection of forbidden items, the eradication of beasts, the admittance to restricted areas, and more."

I've given up on a lot of the NPC names, but Shposhae in Japanese is written シュポシェ which would be pronounced as shoo-poh-shay (without lengthening any of the vowel sounds).

I just thought of another one last night. How do we pronounce Miqote? I just skirt the issue by calling them "catgirls" :p

If we take the Japanese pronunciation as the official way to say it -- ミコッテ would be pronounced mee-koh 'tay

Sorry I don't know how to write proper phonetic symbols...

But "mee" just sounds like the English word "me" (I wrote it that way to avoid pronouncing it like "may" as one might be inclined to do if they know how to romanize Japanese characters)

And there is a glottal stop between "koh" and "tay", as indicated by the (reverse) apostrophe when written as Miqo'te.

As for Shposhae... someone mentioned "shop-shop" on his blog so I'd go with that cos it's cute :p

I've been wondering about peiste for a while. I've heard "paste" "pee-ist" "pyste" "pyse-tee" ... but "peace-tuh," huh? I never got far enough in the research to get to that one.

The first time I did some research on it, I thought I hit paydirt with the fact that there is a "peiste" in the Spanish language; however, that ended up being a form of the verb peer, which means to break wind ... which would make "pee-ay-stay" a good name for a dodo... but I digress.

LATER research led me to the gaelic term "pèist," which means reptile (same as Ferth up there), taken from the same Latin roots as the word "biast" (which led in turn to the English word "beast"). However, the modern Irish pronunciation of this word (which is now associated with worms) is something like "paysht."

If you combine all that, you'd end up with a few technical options that nonetheless sound extremely similar if you were to say them over Mumble or such... You've got "paysht" and "paysteh" ... "paste" if you're lazy.

Now I have to remember "peace-tuh" if that's what they say 'round the water cooler at SE. I need some Eorzean IPA.

Now if only we can force someone in a voiced cutscene to say "Thaw-muh-terj" we'll be all set. No more of this "thurm-uh-tahj" or this "thur-ma-mage" nonsense.

Also, if you can't get audio files up, I'll try to find a way to do it with fan resources

Thermamage (Thur-ma-mage) is a special kind of casting class specializing in fire and blizzard spells.

Everyone knows Peiste is pronounced like Pasties lol.

If you look at Reinhart's translation page for his work on Yoshi-p's latest posts, in the section where he is talking about Louisoix the translation Reinhart comes up with is Ruizawa, which fits with a french pronunciation "Loo-ee-s-wah" pretty well.

Just a small note. In Japanese his name is written ルイゾワ which would be Ruizowa (middle is an "o" rather than "a").

Sweet, I've been getting it right with zero experience in French pronunciations.
