To be fair, the animations are a lot larger on mobs that aren't the size of a peanut.
Still, you wouldn't be the first to point out lackluster spell and ability animations. They certainly aren't what I would have hoped for.
You pretty much forgot, alexia, that to achieve that kind of coreographed animations FFXIII completely removes any kind of actual direct control on the character's position and movement.
It's not a matter of single player or multiplayer. It's a matter than the more positions and environments an animation needs to work with, the more that animation needs to be generic.
Wow I just hit 34 Conjurer and I was looking forward to better spells, but that is the saddest thing I have seen in a long time. I realized that all of the spell effects in FFXIV are 2D. What is up with that? Give us some 3D spell effects for God's sake.
Not to sound like a total ass but, this is the 500th thread on this subject since the game was released. I think SE gets that we don't like the animations.
Didn't FFXI have some pretty cool effects? If it's really impossible to make good effects in a MMO environment, then why has SE already done a good job with this problem in a previous MMO they made? Oh wait, that's the same question to about every other problem with the game....
I think this thread has a lot to add to the discussion. One video says a lot.
Except that video has been posted many times before. Everyone who has played XIV for more than a few hours feels underwhelmed by the spell and skill animations.
The comparison isn't even accurate. They're using AM2 spell animations from FFXI to compare to AM1 spells from 14.
Though even compared to the AM1 spells in XI, the animations/effects are VASTLY inferior. Still I'd feel better if they used the proper comparisons since trolls jump on the slightest things to attack an argument.
(I hate to see a sound argument derailed because of silly, trivial mistakes.)
IMO
Y dun SE just use magicks animation from ff 12 ,
look at this

its beautiful
I agree the magic animations are lack luster. I did in the last 12 threads that said the same thing as well. The fact you think you are important enough to start a 13th thread about this topic is sorta sad... use the search feature........
Sorry for being a duche but posting what has been said, and agreed on multiple times makes your post extremely trollish.
I hope they know, and also hope they will do something about it too. I could stand few more repeated threads if that message got through. It would be really lame to just have to deal with all the spells be sooo uninteresting. I mean.. I'm not expecting the BEST animation ever for high level elemental spells.. since they are more or less "generic" anyway, but this puts a damper on everything.
Although, I also have high hopes the dev team will continue making other things look more interesting too. Including armor, mobs and other classes' abilities. The thing is, there might be a point where things will have to be cut due to priority in adding content or fixing other problems. fingers crossed that animation makes the list, and we get better looking spells/animations/etc.etc.
This MMO has nice effects too:

whoever in charge and created those awful magic animations should be fire
are we talking about animation or spell effects? because in ffxi, white/black mages only had 3 different spell animations. one for dps spells, healing spells, and buffing spells. in terms of spell effects, yes they are very disappointing
you know, I was disappointed by it slightly but not enough to really think about for some odd reason. Seeing that video really made me have a reality check though.
Curious of what on the dev head when they make those lackluster animation... Are they trying to minimize lag?or holding the AWESOME in next expansion? or maybe they just clueless....
Heya!
You know what would be great? Having a One-time Activation code generator included in an ipothetical FFXIV application.
That would solve problems like "I forgot/lost/destroyed/ate the token!". What do you think?
See ya!
[EDIT] Of course, my phone is posting this here because it's an a**... Sorry about this guys
"Better", may always be possible and warranted. Comparing the animation of a game that does *not* feature position control and free movement (FFXIII) with a game that does (FfXIV) is simply silly from a basic technical standpoint.
Oh and by the way, those that talk about "firing" people that created animations or any other part of the game, should learn not to be completely out of line. Animators work with the resources they are given, including budget, time and engine/memory/skeleton limitations. Talking about "firing" them (esoecially considering that they did a very, very good job with other areas of the game's animations) without having the slightest knowledge of the conditions they had to work in is completely nonsensical.
