Here is what I posted in a similar thread about this subject.
This is supposed to be a next gen MMO, I realise this is an MMO so can't compare to a single player game but I still expected something more along the lines of this:

but instead we got this:

for comparison here is FFXI and they are still better:

Come on SE you can do better than that, in fact you already have..
To be fair, the animations are a lot larger on mobs that aren't the size of a peanut.
Still, you wouldn't be the first to point out lackluster spell and ability animations. They certainly aren't what I would have hoped for.

You pretty much forgot, alexia, that to achieve that kind of coreographed animations FFXIII completely removes any kind of actual direct control on the character's position and movement.
It's not a matter of single player or multiplayer. It's a matter than the more positions and environments an animation needs to work with, the more that animation needs to be generic.

ummmm.... No. The animation needs to be better regardless. (emphasis on the period)You pretty much forgot, alexia, that to achieve that kind of coreographed animations FFXIII completely removes any kind of actual direct control on the character's position and movement.

"Better", may always be possible and warranted. Comparing the animation of a game that does *not* feature position control and free movement (FFXIII) with a game that does (FfXIV) is simply silly from a basic technical standpoint.
Oh and by the way, those that talk about "firing" people that created animations or any other part of the game, should learn not to be completely out of line. Animators work with the resources they are given, including budget, time and engine/memory/skeleton limitations. Talking about "firing" them (esoecially considering that they did a very, very good job with other areas of the game's animations) without having the slightest knowledge of the conditions they had to work in is completely nonsensical.

Wow I just hit 34 Conjurer and I was looking forward to better spells, but that is the saddest thing I have seen in a long time. I realized that all of the spell effects in FFXIV are 2D. What is up with that? Give us some 3D spell effects for God's sake.

Not to sound like a total ass but, this is the 500th thread on this subject since the game was released. I think SE gets that we don't like the animations.
I hope they know, and also hope they will do something about it too. I could stand few more repeated threads if that message got through. It would be really lame to just have to deal with all the spells be sooo uninteresting. I mean.. I'm not expecting the BEST animation ever for high level elemental spells.. since they are more or less "generic" anyway, but this puts a damper on everything.
Although, I also have high hopes the dev team will continue making other things look more interesting too. Including armor, mobs and other classes' abilities. The thing is, there might be a point where things will have to be cut due to priority in adding content or fixing other problems. fingers crossed that animation makes the list, and we get better looking spells/animations/etc.etc.
Didn't FFXI have some pretty cool effects? If it's really impossible to make good effects in a MMO environment, then why has SE already done a good job with this problem in a previous MMO they made? Oh wait, that's the same question to about every other problem with the game....
