Please change ARC close-range auto-attack from punching to striking with bow

The current plan for ARC in ARR seems to be that when enemies are too close, the ARC will punch the enemy rather than shoot arrows. Even if the game had these punches deal significant damage, it just wouldn't make much sense for archer's to deal large amounts of damage with an offhand, unarmed punch. Since we already know arcanist's will be slapping around enemies with their books, why can't archers strike enemies with their bows?

I think all of us have seen movies where bowmen smash their bows into enemies who get too close, and I think most of us can agree that this would, at the very least, look way cooler than an unarmed punch. Since archer's soloing are likely to use the close-range auto-attack a LOT as enemies creep up on them, I'd really rather not bareknuckle box everything.

Alternatively, you could allow archer's to dual wield, and have them strike with some kind of off hand weapon when enemies are close (sword, dagger, etc.). Which would also do more believable damage than hitting enemies with your bare fist.

Edit: Yeah, or as people have stated, stabbing the enemy with an arrow at close range would also work.

True, but they made a big show about alluding to a unique Auto-attack animation for arcanists...

Frankly, I'd rather just see bows come with an obligatory melee weapon (that comes in a set, like h2h weapons.) and they just hit with that when in melee range. Doesn't even need to change the damage modifier it would just look better than trying to punch stuff one handed with your bow out.

wha? dude, bows are fragile and expensive. I'm not getting a scratch on my garuda's spine.

Aren't archers auto-attacking arrows in ARR?

He said he wanted to have an exaggerated auto attack where you hit the enemy with the book in a way it looks like it will hurt a lot, but its not really going to hurt much all that much.

Unless it was stated elsewhere the only time they discussed it was in the live 25th anniversary event, and they went out of their way to not say anything specific other than the animation team was devoted to making an epic auto attack animation with the books.

It very heavily intimated that it would be a physical blow with the book, but they didn't actually say that's what it would be.

No. You're thinking guns or riflemen, not bows and archers. I have never seen an archer smash their bow into someone.

They are removing ammunition from the game, they no longer have an excuse to prevent ARC from having a ranged auto attack.

This is true. And, could quite possibly end up happening. Classes are changing, and maybe they will get rid of light shot in order for archer to auto attack with ranged. tho, that will end up changing Barrage too.

Painful indeed.

Punching makes way more sense than smacking with a wooden (though sometimes reinforced) bow. You can whack someone with a gun np, but a bow? lol

They will have a ranged auto-attack, but it will switch to punching when the target gets close to you. As for striking with the bow, Skyrim did it, so I don't see a problem with it, but I'd rather they just keep shooting the enemy with arrows honestly.

They should keep shooting with arrows, as punching does less damage than arrows. making them punch up close would make it hard to do anything solo as an archer, as it is difficult to keep your distance. Along with that, the 8 yalm range requirement for combos on archer skills also makes it difficult to solo with them :/ unless youre fighting a ranged enemy.

It's hard to argue from a realism standpoint in a video game... but really trying to hit someone in melee range with a projectile from a bow is incredibly difficult, so having a melee option really does make more sense. Hitting things with your bow would largely be more diversionary and defensive rather than a reliable offensive tactic.

Keeping in mind that when I say "Melee range" I mean close enough that your target could be physically hitting you too, not to mention pushing your bow to the side or out of the way .

So when they are close range their AA switches to punches with gimped damage, thus encouraging ARCs to maintain distance and attack from range.

Nothing to see here folks. Move along.

I would think a stab attack with an arrow would make far more sense then smacking them with a fragile bow

Of course shooting arrows at melee is unrealistic, but they're throwing out realistic animations in favor of better gameplay, so why not this too?

Be cool if they added a fist-like weapon to the ARC/BRD offhand that was stylized based off bow. Kinda like brass knuckles.

Legolas was an imaginary elf that can walk on snow and was the prince of Mirkwood and he never was close in combat he stayed far back if you read the books. Also he carried a couple of daggers for close combat (though I'd have to re read his description from Fellowship I could be a bit off on that but I do believe he did mention running out of arrows and having to resort to his daggers in the defense of Helms Deep)

Given the amount of random spikes and armor plating that is tacked on to most bows. I think it would hurt like all get out to get wacked up side the head with one.

Do you realize how ineffective a bow is at close range? If you're so close that you can punch something, when shooting, the arrow contacts the target before it has left the frame of the bow. An arrow is not at its maximum velocity until it has left the vertical axis on which the bowstring sits, unlike a gun where the projectile is at full speed well before it leaves the barrel.

This. Stabbing an arrow into someones neck seems like an effective close range attack.

If we melee with a bow, i would expect to take increased damage to it. but really i feel this is not needed. punching makes a lot more sense than striking with a bow.

it's fine in movies and what not. but reality is you can only do this with certain kinds of bows or you wont' have a bow that shoots arrows anymore. and the bow has to be specifically designed for this.

Any composite bow may work for this. because they are typically a bit more durable. but self bows or compound bows are a lot more fragile. but really any bow not specifically designed to be used in melee shouldn't be used in melee. a punch makes 200% more sense.

Given this is a game i wont' complain either way

stabbing with an arrow also is fine though.

There is in-game canon lore for archers actually using pugilist weapons as their 'CQC Off-hand' weapon. In at least one crafting leve it mentions crafting gauntlets for the Quiver because they use it as CQC weapon.

oh that's neat. I'd love to be able to equip something in the 'throw' slot that would increase my punch damage. we're archers, wtf do we need to throw stones for anyway >.>;;

They really need to re do the animation before 2.0 comes out and let us smack the mob with a bow like Archers would have done in medieval times. It makes no since for an archer to punch an enemy when his bow is a much better weapon for the job. Bows were made super sturdy and could be used to even parry blows from big swords and other weapons. Instead you make us punch the enemy with our fist? If that is the case they just need to make an offhand dagger that only gets used during close range auto attack. At least that is semi imposing.

actually I don't know what facts you're talking about. My cousin is a hunter and has a hunting bow. I've used bows and arrows irl and I never whacked anything with my bow nor has my cousin... Actually if you want to go with more factual then why does it take more than one arrow for us to kill something seeing as how most of the time (especially with animals) one shot is a killing blow to them because they're either aiming for the heart or brains ^_^ . also one shot can disable them and keep them from running to do another killing blow with a different weapon like a dagger or something to that extent.
