Looking for random player tips on the fight.
Doing it with a group. And having a rather hard time.
Edit: Props to SE for making a good and hard fight though. When I beat it I will actually feel pretty good knowing that I am actually good enough :-)

Is how the fight makes me feel
Get blm's and whm's and 1 tank + 1 melee, don't let any meteor touch the ground, get into the area of his aoe to not let him steal life. Te tank can move a bit to avoid getting the charge attack. Win.
You make it sound so easy >_<
Took me about 10 tries with a full LS party to beat it down, but afterwards once we knew how it was done it was fast, nice, and easy.
Consider ringing a BRD too to help mana regen for the BLM's so it should be 1 tank, 1 melee (to kite and kill the earth elementals, as Nael won't use his meteor attack until those are dead, and are almost immune to magic) 1 brd to help the mana regen, melee with dps, 2whm and 3 blms. Meteors are weak to aero, so maybe one whm coudl be in cleric stance is the party is not taking too much damage.
The setup we used was Pld, 2x Drg, Mnk, Brd, Whm, 2x Blm.
Monk with FoW is a godsend on the golems. Since this is a pretty lengthy fight Drg does over better damage compared to Blm/Mnk.
Boss's teleport isn't hard to predict and avoid so melee can stay on the boss for most of the fight.
Bluegartr has a good guide if you dont' know about it already
edit: I believe OP is talking about the hard mode darnus fight, I think some people are confused.
Well, I consider myself a good WHM, but i dont think I can outheal Darnu's dmg if 1/2 the ppl constantly get hit by every AoE.
Also, what do you do with the 2 BLM? middle level for whole fight?
Tried running with 2 MNK 1 BRD 2 BLM 2 WHM 1 PLD, our damage was SO BAD! That and people constantly died because whats self healing and holding hate?
This fight is not a complete pushover that can be done with a random group.

BG's guide is pretty much a step by step.
At phase 1 (which is after his initial megaflare) one blm will always be on middle platform taking care of meteors, after 60% health 2nd blm should join the other blm nuking meteors. Once Darnus is below 40% health one blm can return to help dps the boss.
When Darnus is nearly defeated he will teleport up top for a second megaflare, melee should dps as much as possible here to prevent a instant wipe from megaflare.
Phase 2 starts after his megaflare and he recovers to full health.
edit: right I forgot melee should be using featherfoot whenever its up to help mitigate some damage. Our whm usually runs out of mp on phase 2 from nuking the golems.
youtube hard mode darnus
most parties seem to run with 3 melee and 1 whm, but we run with 2 DRGs for damage on darnus and 1 extra WHM for healing + golem/meteor nuking. the flex WHM's job is pretty important because if they're not able to immediately esuna the defense down from plasma acoustics off the tank + aerora darnus to strip off his defense up buff, your tank will probably die and/or your healers will run out of MP and/or you likely won't do enough damage to finish the fight in the 30 minutes.
it's also nice because the flex WHM can run up top to help nuke in 10 meteors phase. aero on stuff moving slow, stone on stuff moving fast. even though stone won't do a lot of damage it's usually enough to take care of that meteor if the blm/thm hits it with thunder
using 1 whm and 3 melee puts more healing stress on your whm but less stress on your melee to perform. it's also a little easier to have a monk with fists of wind handle golems than to ask a squishy whm to do it. using 2 whm 2 melee shares healing load without really sacrificing much of any damage since you're able to immediately strip off his defense boost. this does put a lot of pressure on your melee to do enough damage when he goes up top, though.
either way it's a tradeoff and you just have to figure out which strat works better for your LS
(and yes, drg does do the best damage to darnus himself in this fight)
We killed it x2 WHM, x2 THM, 1 DRG, 1 MNK, 1 PLD, 1 BRD.
We had time as an issue, so we didn't have our 1 of our thms sit on second platform, whenever a meteor spawned we would have the thms combo thunder on darnuss-> Thundara 1shot the meteor. Then both THMS run onto the same platform for the Meteor Phases.
The only time you need to run to seperate platforms is the phase 2 sub 40% 10 meteor phase, where you need people on both platforms to reach everything.
THM is also very important because they can cycle Sanguine Rite on your melee as they run out during his beam attack. Also, you have access to Aero.
MNKS+THM+BLM can all kill the golems. Makes it a lot less stressful.
During phase 2, 10 meteor phase, it is very important that your PLD Hollow Grounds, and pops all of his CD's to sustain himself for ~ 45seconds. Having 1 thm and 1 whm on each side to kill meteors (+ BRD floating) Is extremely important. 1 good THM can solo it, but it is far less stress and far more reliable if you have a whm backing you up. ONLY target the ones on your side, and target them in the ORDER they spawn, regardless of which spawns closest to the ground.
Make sure your MNK knows they can dispel his DEF+ Ability, and your WHM's Aerora it if the mnks dispel doesnt land.
You can skip some of his phases entirely, makes the fight pretty gimp. Once you figure out how you can bring in a very damage efficient setup.
Well, if we're gonna get the claws out. My point was I actually have a video on there using BLM's point of view which is basically the hardest role in the fight. It would have provided good insight into the mechanics of the fight were you not so busy coming up with witty (yet absurd) responses like comparing playing a video game with skydiving. Bravo to you though, this is exactly the kind of horse-high attitude I was expecting to come from someone "seeking help and advice".
I'm sorry I took 2 seconds of my time to reply to one of these stupid forum threads and didn't blatantly try to spam the boards with my own video. I just assumed "youtube hard mode darnus" would yield the darnus videos in different job point of views had the person who read the message had any common sense at all whatsoever. Obviously I asked for too much.
Because watching a video (something he has probably done before now) is the same as asking for tips? You shouldn't have wasted '2 seconds of your time' to reply, if it was going to be a pointless post.
Saying "lol look at youtube" is about as useless as it gets.
Sometimes it's more helpful to get a written guide/set of tips, rather than trying to glean information from videos with no commentary. Although there are already a few gems of information out there, at the very least OP is asking for help in an open manner, rather than getting frustrated and making a thread about how this fight is impossible (something that is pretty common every patch...).
No one should ever get derided for asking for help.
If you were ACTUALLY familiar with the subject and actually youtubed "hard mode darnus" you would know that only 2 videos of it are up on youtube. One was from BG which was posted when they made a guide for it and one was a BLM pov video that I had JUST uploaded 2 days ago so I HIGHLY doubt he would've seen it already. There *may* be other videos there but they're not as easy to search for. What you assume to be useless isn't just so in this regard, but thanks for *your* 2 seconds of useless.
Someone had already suggested the BG video (As in actually helped).
The other video is some anime music on top of a 480p video with no commentary to explain what is happening and what to do.
Hence why written guides were requested. So no, telling him to youtube it wasn't useful at all.
Most videos are just gameplay videos with no commentary or tips. Just some guys playing with awful music playing in the background.
Suggesting videos without commentary is useless.
When i made a group for this, it was a requirement for everyone to read the BG guide and watch the video before we started. Your comment was just useless. Thats why i had the "horse-high attitude"
Edit: there are actually a few videos on this. There's one that's MNK PoV that's rather good.
Okay so petty trolling aside, what is your main issue in the fight insofar, seeing as you've watched the videos and read guides? From page 1 post, your DPS was bad? Are you parsing? Are they taking too much damage and spending too much time half-dead to do anything to Darnus?
Ok so you read the guide and watched the BG video but you still had troubles so you came here for tips. I told you to youtube it and you found some other good videos including the MNK one you mentioned. How was my comment useless exactly if you did what I said and you found other videos helpful?
Edit: as to your actual problems with the fight, when he teleports for the beam/explosion it will target the tank (or whoever has hate), have him run sideways in one direction while the rest of the party runs to the other direction (or if safe, directly behind Darnus is 100% safe spot from beam/explosion).
Assuming you're still running with a PLD, do you have an idea on their rotation? Who is your tank primarily losing hate to, healing or DPS?
If losing hate to WHM's, you may be able to assume one of the following:
- WHMs over-healing
- PLD taking too much dmg., possibly moving around too much, not mitigating/healing themselves enough
DPS:
- flaw in PLD's enmity rotation
Personally, tanking isn't my department at all; but at the least I'd like to maybe open up the conversation some more to help people provide solutions
So anything you did before someone said it is branded useless. How dare us not use our psychic abilities and know the things you've done prior to us writing our useless tips. Or know that being told to watch videos will be frowned upon so by his majesty.
God I swear some people...
Are you even aware of what's happening here? You asked for random player tips. The first few tips you got told you to read the BG guide and watch videos and now you're complaining they're not the tips you want? Ever heard the phrase "beggars can't be choosers"?
If you're waiting for some miraculous random tip that will magically win you the fight then it's not happening. There's no trick to the fight that you wouldn't come up with yourself out of common sense. Although I'm actually beginning to think that you may be sorely lacking in that regard...
Actually... In most cases of over healing its the people getting hit's fault... in this fights case, they don't know where to stand... is your DD group giving the PLD a 10sec head start?
There is a 'sweet spot' much like on coin counter, where if you stand there they will not get hit at all, therefore will not get knocked back into the dangerous outer ring.
Have the tank, tank him on the points closer to the stares on the white drawn ring. think of it like a clock.
Tank at 12 and 6 dependent on where he pops. party stands just indie the 3 or 9 nearest to hit for the safe spot. Move back a bit when he does that move where a line of fire shoots up.
When he spawns on you, do not panic, he won't actually hit you. Tank needs to drag him back to 12 or 6 always.
Tank needs to run in a line so that his laser beam never ever hits the party. Since the party is standing still that should be easy.
When meteors come, one blm runs up the stairs to the platform and kills them before they hit the ground.
When Van-Dan goes into Mag resist mode and is allllll the way up the top, have a single melee run up there and wail on him till he respawns down the bottom.
At this point the whms and pld can very very easily kill the golems so the blms can kill all the meteors.
Then its just his limit break, and repeat stage 1 of the fight again till his butt is dead.
This is an extraordinarily fun fight, I think most LS's who wanted to figure it all out by themselves took 7-10 runs before they had him on farm, because once you have the mechanics down, its cake ^_^
Best of luck!
Could you possibly tell me at which percentages (in both stages) the BLM is supposed to go up?
ex: 100-60% 1 BLM 60-40% 2 BLM 40-20 no BLM stuff like that.
