Is Final Fantasy XI Still A Thing?

I bought Final Fantasy XI way back in 2004 when if first released. I played it for around 2-3 weeks before moving on to other things (I was 14 then.)

Anyways, I've been playing Final Fantasy XIV for a little while, and now I kind of want to play Final Fantasy XI again, for whatever reason. I recently bought the "complete collection" that has all of the expansions for XI thus far, but it's been 9 years (whoa!) since it started and there have been so many expansion packs I'm wondering if it's too late to start playing XI at this point (the storyline has already been played out, everyone is level 50, etc.)

What do you guys think? Is it too late to start such an old game? Do you think Square Enix neglects XI now, or when XIV 2.0 releases? Is it even worth playing?

If any of you are still playing XI, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

It's not too late and SE doesn't neglect it as they're working on an expansion pack for it for next year (may I believe?) Once you hit level 99 you'll be able to blow through a lot of older content so that's the general plus about the higher cap -- Start on Asura server where a lot of new players and returning players go so it's usually always active there. Unlike 2004, you'll level in Alliances called Book Burn parties in Gusgen and the like, which is using the Grounds of Valour system (the test bed for XIV's Leve system essentially.)

It may be difficult for you to play FFXI.

Gaining Sea access could be very hard since hardly anyone may be doing CoP storyline anymore. That's f you even care about the story though.

It's pretty terrible now, plagued by Tanaka's ideas and drop rates as bad as Darklight and Militia Trousers. Maybe since Matsui picked the game back up, it'll be less shit, but I'd wait for the new expansion before bothering with anything.

I wouldn't say it's too late to get into, since someone can PL you 90 in a few days or so, and then you can solo the missions. Endgame is very lacking, since they decided to increase the level cap from 75-99 in roughly one year with little content to support that jump. But you can explore a lot of the locations in XI, since that's what made the game so great.

Level 50? the max level in XI is 99.

It might be an "old" game, but they're releasing another expansion. it still has life in it. The games are coexisting rather well.

You can solo CoP.

Terrible now? Because of Tanaka, who isnt there. Your playing both sides of the fence, "now" the game is easy-mode and you can 100% get basically any drop by procing mobs, and if the game is terrible "now" that would mean you liked it "before" the drops were jokes to get. The only piece of Tanaka that remains relevant appart from the amazing storyline was voidwatchers which he got flamed for because it was "to hard".

If you like good games that have some version of challenge, dont go. If you want to start at lvl1 and beat the game in a month, go ahead, you may enjoy it.

FFXI right now is super easy to start you log on get 30+ and you can have 2-4 level 99 within 1week or less with good gear and even have sky,cop done pretty quick seeing how everything can be solo when it come to sky,cop stuff and i guessing whitegate also.

Any content not designed with 99s in mind, i.e all content prior to Abyssea era+ can be soloed with few exceptions -- You can't solo Dynamis Lord because of the fight setup alone.

That's been my hope as well, since Matsui was the lead designer behind Abyssea, which for all the griping people do about it, has been the most fun I'd had with the game in years. Too bad he's back in charge of XI now and if he hasn't already will likely be replaced on the XIV team - I can't see him working 2 MMOs at once.

Did they ever say who our new battle director would be?

Matsui is working on both games.

Except they've since added those mobs that are lv105 that con Tough and Incredibly Tough to lv99 characters. Because SE couldn't leave well enough alone.

Up to "One to be feared", maybe. I had to three-man Tenzen because I couldn't kill him quickly enough.

There is a vast amount of content to do in XI. Starting now can be challenging but it isn't as hard as it was orginally. Once at a suffcient level you can grind out alot fairly fast. It will however be challenging to find low level parties, iwithotu a sub job, and get some aspects done. If not familiar with the game (you will need to use guides) it will be a slow process. Once familiar grinding out jobs isn't all that hard.

A majority of the community are level 80+ and have leveled most jobs to at least 75. THe community isn't what it used to be so gettign help can be tough, even with level synch.

It's much easier to get going in FFXI these days. Aside from needing to stop for limit break quests (some of which they adjusted to make significantly easier), you can get max level in a relatively short time. Sure, some people just pay for exp in fell cleave parties in abyssea (myself included), but with Grounds of Valor you can still get upwards of 100k+/hr in some areas.

Most of the old content is also very easy to do now. The level limits on CoP were lifted long ago. RoZ, ToAU, and WotG are even easier due to players being 99. Dynamis got a complete overhaul a while ago as well, so most people farm solo or lowman groups.

The current endgame hierarchy is pretty much abyssea > voidwatch > neo-einherjar/nyzul > legion. Leaving out neo-limbus since it's just, well... not really worth it for the vast majority of items (few exceptions though), plus it's stupid easy. Easier than limbus at 75 was.

Xbox 360 is a console from 2005 which is still quite powerful -- PS2 is a console designed in 1998 which is less power than probably something you can pick up in a dollar store these days.

Since we're talking about this subject, i'm strongly considering buying FFXI to play while XIV is down. Heck, I almost bought it a few hours ago, but gave up =P.

Thing is that I have 4 hours experience with it, tops. How hard would it be to, at the very least, play thru the main storylines, not counting abyssea, as a completely new player to the game?

There's a lot of waiting after JP midnight to progress the story after certain missions, (most noticeably in ToAU) a lot of running around, and a lot of things needed to stand a chance at soloing the storyline missions. (subjob quests, limit break quests, etc.) Because of FoV, abyssea, things like that though, it's not really, really bad. If you've only had 4 hours on the game in general, I'd definitely recommend doing it. XI's a rare game, the slogging around makes what you do feel that much more worthwhile.

Something nobody ever wants to deal with. I hate when I forget to change the settings from where it disconnects after 20 mins to never.

If this was XIV's update system, the same amount of data would probably take me like, 12 hours. sob.

Wait, people sit there and actually update within POL? You all do realize that you can reinstall the game from scratch and be done updating everything within a couple of minutes right? Just get the updates via Bluegartr.

If the link gets nuked just PM for it. SE doesn't like people being able to update fast and efficiently.

I have the complete collection dvd, can I play without have to buy the expansion?

I'm currently playing both, it's rather nice actually. My linkshell exists on both XIV and XI, so whenever I'm bored of XIV I can do stuff on XI. I'm usually running both games at the same time on weekends.
