I have a better idea. FFXI Remaster
Hell no. Stop shoving other games into FFXIV, keep FFXIV as FFXIV please. That also includes alliance raids.
Stop asking for FFXI to be remade, it just ain't gonna happen.
Its why we have the FFXI raids now here, so a little bit of Vana'diel will live on here in Hydaelyn when it inevitably is shut down, that's the closest you're going to get.
Not that I'd want to go to Vana'diel, especially not if it is being pitched with AI slop, but there is genuinely no part of XIV that isn't taken from other FF games in some capacity, it remixes things around sure, but it is still so much, far beyond what could be called "just a reference".
For real, but I find some of my favorite parts of the story of FFXIV to be when it’s doing its own original story, or at least referencing an older Final Fantasy that I’m not familiar with. The a Shadowbringers MSQ comes to mind, and also the Endwalker alliance raids, whose story was my favorite of the whole expansion. The FFXIV writers don’t always knock it out of the park with their original stories, but I think tying FFXIV to older FF games hurts as much as it helps.
No thanks I'm kinda tired of 11. In fact I'd prefer it if they stopped crutching so much on other FF games but since they're obviously not going to stop doing that I'd rather see more FFX/FFX-2 and its aesthetic.
THIS. PLEASE. THANK YOU.
I just... maybe I'm in the minority in this situation too, but I've only played and am interested in XIV (Well, was). While yes, I think they've done a great job of blending games into the past where I didn't even know it was a reference - lately it's been glaringly obvious they've only cared to cater to nostalgia/say: 'hey guys this other game exists isn't it so cool? Go play it or if you already play it see, here, it's cool!'.
It is GLARINGLY obvious with the horrible writing for the postpatch of Endwalker, where I was so excited to see more nuance with the void and explore more of Zero's sanctuary only to have that all thrown away and the typical 'oh actually yay suddenly she's turned into a paladin and that's her arc'. With a badly written 'oh wait this voidsent Golbez is good now :) so there's your nuance'. No, Golbez was so hamfisted story-arc-wise. Gods, the ending of that postpatch series would have made me quit entirely if I wasn't kept here by housing/RP, it was so disappointing, and for what...to follow the story of an old FF game. Urgh. I love voidsent and the nuance All Saints (at least in the far past) has brought to them lorewise, and was expecting so much more only to be let down so hard.
Collabs and all are cool I guess, again if they actually manage to write the lore in a way that's understandable, but it feels so detrimental to just every. single. time. make a slight modification of something that already exists. Again - if they can do it well to the point where it's not obvious, great. But gods, please, something original would be nice. Well, something original written WELL which is apparently a tall ask lately.
And even if it is obvious to folks who are in the know - fine, but write it in a way someone who has no idea would also understand, and if it compromises the story/causes things that make no sense or ruin what was being built... don't do it, or go in a different direction, something unique.
This right here makes it sound like your problem isn't so much with adopting things from other games, but rather the moment you recognize it, it takes away from your enjoyment, which is kind of a you thing.
Everything is derivative, and so long as they can make something interesting enough out of it, I don't mind them deriving from the series' own past, I've said many times Eden is my favorite story in the game and that's heavily derivative of VIII, it's entirely about what comes out the other end.
Nah I was just hedging my bets in case someone came in saying “no the Shadowbringers MSQ is a direct copy of Final Fantasy XII-3.7 Birth By Yawning” or some such. I actually thought the FF4-inspired parts of Endwalker were fun and charming, for example, and the references enhanced my enjoyment. But my favorite FFXIV stories were ones where the writers did their own thing.
Yeah my favorites hands down are the DRK questline and Sorrows of Werylt. Sorrows I know is derived of something, DRK I'm not sure. But I'd love more nuanced stories like that, those that really take your breath away emotionally and lorebuild well in the meantime. So if those are derived, count me as appreciating things based off other things as long as it's done well - but again, original stuff is also important.
The core plot is mostly original because most Garlean lore is, the derivative aspect comes from the Weapons, all of them are from Final Fantasy VII, including Ultima back in ARR, they are much more detailed in XIV obviously, and their exact nature changes, from being Kaijus created by the planet in an attempt to find and purge the corruption that was Jenova, but being so destructive they threatened all life on the planet, some of their role mirror VII though, like the Sapphire Weapon, who in VII infamously looked down the barrel of a railgun due to not being able to understand what it was, and had its head promptly blown off, and that's the one that has the least meaningful battle content, being only a solo duty where you play as the G-Warrior instead, or the fact that only Ultima Weapon is a mandatory fight, while the other three are optional bosses, which again mirror their role in XIV, with Ultima being a major MSQ boss, and the others being optional instances.
See what I mean by taking and remixing? references aren't necessarily bad, a reference that relies on you understanding the original is bad, but a reference that can be enjoyed independent of the original is great actually, which is what I see done with the Weapons.
Although, visiting this again to double check info reminded me there is still two more Weapons in FF VII media though not the original game, the Jade Weapon and the Omega Weapon, and makes me wonder if we will ever see them in XIV in some capacity...
I think incorporating ff11's time travel system would be cool. we could visit 1.0 zones
It's too late. They already made the FFXI raid. And I'm already not that inspired by it really so I think it wouldn't work.
I want FF14 to stand on its own again, I think we've lent to hard on older Final Fantasy's and an original story would be refreshing
Well, and Meracydia, but it's clear we are not going there for a long time
The game is basically a giant FF theme park and that's a part of the game that I really love, they aren't going to stop and I don't want them to. I enjoy going "hey its that guy from that one part of [insert FF game]."
They should make an expansion based on ff7 or ff9… Sure we have some ff9 references in dawntrail, but it’s not enough!
Exactly this.
I would love the Mana (Seikken Densetsu) series to be the next alliance raid.
There's a lot of joy in re-experiencing Final Fantasy XI.
This game is a theme park. The people complaining the hardest are the ones who said in previous posts that they're leaving. So, bye I guess.
Ya know, that’s fair. I have already decided to leave, and I’m just marking time, so I suppose my opinions don’t matter. I will leave a parting warning though that an appeal to nostalgia only works on people who have experienced the thing you’re evoking nostalgia for. It’s a limited and decreasing audience … just like this game’s player base.
That's why they appeal to the nostalgia of every FF game, rather than just one. They have stated this as the reason multiple times.
For many people, FF14 isn't their first FF game, but rather one they got into after playing some of the others, because a lot of people are afraid of MMORPGs.
But if they draw those players in and it looks completely unique like no other game, they will think "this isn't an FF game". Because every FF game is different, and so if you only played FF7 you might not think this is an FF game. If you only played FF9 you might not think this is an FF game.
To solve that, they have to incorporate lots of elements from these very different looking games. You can switch the menu from grey like FF9 to blue like FF7, you can attach materia like FF7, you can visit the gold saucer like FF7, there are black mages like in many FF games, there is a Cid, in the current iteration you can summon temporarily like in older FF games but then keep a summon out the whole time if you glam Carbuncle so that it feels like newer FF games.
However there is a line we could draw between nostalgia in game systems and nostalgia in the story. As long as the systems have a lot of nostalgia to make it feel like an FF game, the story doesn't necessarily need to. That said, it is rather cool getting to fight Eden from FF8, the weapons from FF7, and to get updated familiar music from these games.
Please no more FF9, I've had the right amount of it. Look, I played a little bit of the original game so I had my fair share of "oh hey I know that reference" but - and I'm going to sound extremely petty here - the amount of attention it got this expansion - especially Alexandria at the expense of Tuliyollal/Tural has made me resent 9 a little.
