I dont like his ideas about turning this FFXIV in a mobile version.
With the amount of combat removed from the MSQ if they do this I'm just done. May as well have a video play as a MSQ and be done with it at that point.Quote:
Yoshi mentions that recent games allow auto travel or instant warping to quest destinations. They are discussing if auto-movement would be alright to implement in XIV too.
MSQ right now is pretty much just running from one area to another picking something up or talking to someone which is very boring already.
I think removing the restriction is a bad idea. It'll result dead queues if the restrictions are removed, people won't have a reason to keep signing in throughout the patch.Quote:
In general they are in the process of re-evaluating things that they used to say as "well this is what it is/can't be helped" and seeing what could actually be helped, though some aspects might take up to six months. This includes things about Allagan Tomestones and if "0/450" is still something to work with in this day and age.
Oof. Hearing how heavy his focus is on mobile games is spelling some really, really dark future for the development of this game. Auto-move and teleport? At that point just don't do the MSQ or put a big 'skip' button at the beginning of 8.0. Three big booms for him.
I've been saying this all along. A very large part of DT's pacing issues (and why Wuk Lamat had to be in right up in your face every second) was because the Zero story took up all five EW patches. DT didn't get the EW .4/.5 patches to do all the initial prep. Instead, the DT leveling MSQ had to waste a HUGE amount of time doing very basic setup and characters introductions and stuff, that in any other expansion would have happened ahead of time.Quote:
They felt that 6.x resulted in the transition to Dawntrail being weak, which is why they went back to the x.3/x.4 split of story that they used to do.
So a few things:
Glamour
I find it really interesting that Yoshida still is actually against the unlocking but finally gave in (it seems that even the other devs were surprised by that).
I am completely in favor of keeping racial things restricted, be it gear or character creator, though I wished they themselves would actually stay true to that stance and stop deleting racial features in gear.
Definitely against the auto travel and instant warping. The game has already a borderline useless overworld and is an instance simulator.
That will only ghosttown it even more and is for me a very dangerous direction to think about.
Even mobile games like Genshin don't do that because in the end it's still a game. I really want them to reconsider that idea because even if it's an option, it would still effect the way others experience the game.
If the time for traveling between quests is the problem then, I don't know, go back to ARR map sizes?
The solution to boring travel should be to make it more satisfying and interesting instead of deleting it altogether.
MSQ
Sounds definitely like Krile might finally get some more love (guess the criticism was right here).
It's interesting that he also sees most of the scions as fully portrayed and I kinda hope that means room for newer characters.
It also gives me personally a bit of validation in thinking that G'raha Tia has had enough adventures with us at this point, despite what some want to think. Personally though I am mostly tired of the twins tbh.
The transition to DT was definitely weak and really hurt that expansion. As much as I liked the void story, it could have been shorter than five patches.
I like that they truly seem to consider feedback and go with the times like with glamour.
On the other hand the "chasing of the modern gamer" honestly worries me. It's akin to the "wanting to get the players who never played an MMO" which resulted in dumbed down jobs, too easy EW content and extreme safe play.
I really, really hope in their chasing for the modern crowd they don't forget that people like me actually play because it's an MMO. And to be frank, SE doesn't have the talent or money to "make their Genshin" anyway.
One thing though because it's not mentioned in the reddit digest. He did mention that glamour might not be the most crazy thing to come. Here directly from Discord:
"YoshiP has confirmed that the mindset will not be applied to just glamours but each and every aspect, as well as the fundamental rule of FFXIV as long as it adheres to what he mentioned above (business sense, doesn't obstruct the company's operation, make FFXIV even more enjoyable, etc). He mentions that don't be surprised in case there's a change of THAT degree in the future".
Square Enix chasing after players they won't have while steering further away from the player they have, episode 352...
The whole JRPG is going "you know stick to the fundamentals gameplay wise, but reinvent yourself story wise", but SE keep going the opposite way, and now they do the same with MMOs : "Actually, mmo players don't want to play to a mmo, they want a mobile game". No we don't. Coming from the people that didn't want to see how the JRPG was more than "a RPG from Japan", but something with well identified codes and methods, I'm not even surprised.
With all the respect I have for Yoshida and what he brought to XIV, I feel it's time to push him out and bring someone that actually wants to do a mmorpg, or if it's the execs that push the game in that direction, it's time for him to stand up against them to defend the game he once saved. It's time to stop being the PR guy.
We're here to play a f*cking MMO, one that repect our time but still is a mmo. Stop wanting to be everything but that. There will already be a FFXIV mobile game, no need to have a second one. The same way you don't transform non high end raiders into high end raiders because you put a haircut or don't make a normal mode to your content, you won't get the mobile game players chose a mmo (especially a subscription one) over an actual mobile game : they already have better options, actual mobile game that are not a mmo that tries to be something it's not. Stop doing the same error again and again.
G'raha still has to do a proper tour of Ishgard with us at some point, so he can fanboy over Heavensward some more. And maybe we introduce him to Count Edmond so he can fanboy over him too.
Other than that, I agree that his character arc is pretty much over, and he should retire. ALL of the Scions need to retire back out to the background.
We need to miss them for them to be fun again.
- Thancred becomes the guy we go to when we need to break into something
- Estinien becomes the guy we go to when we have a dragon problem
- Urianger becomes the guy we go to whenever we have a problem with a Society
- Y'shtola becomes the gal we go to whenever we have a serious magic problem
- Tataru becomes the gal we go to whenever we have a money or math problem
- G'raha becomes the guy we go to whenever we have an Allagan problem
- Alphinaud becomes the guy we go to whenever we have a diplomatic problem
- Alisae becomes the gal we go to whenever we have someone we need punched (metaphorically) for being stubborn
Bring out the Scion B team! Lets get some more development with Arenvald, Coultenet, the Boulder brothers (Hoary and Ochre), and the Cockburne sisters (Aenor and Clemence)
Surely that's why the same DRG has been able to wear short uwu skirts and bikinis since forever right?Quote:

Back in EW, I was fully thinking the Students were being set up as our new order of friendly allies after the Scions disbanded, with the two being in the same position as Minfillia was way back. G'raha's technically a historian and was a city leader, and just as equipped to do the research and "office work" of our group as he is a fighter, probably much more so, in fact. He's been perfectly set up to take a backseat without disappearing as the leader of their rebuilding order. DT giving us Krile also felt like they were going that direction again, but nope.
I still want that, since we would have a great route to both do big world level travels, discoveries, and influence things on the same scale as we did with the Scions, but have a perfect home for new characters to join us and have old favorites return as needed.
So they DO plan to expand the character creator?!Quote:
They have gradual plans to increase the scope of character creation. The example he used was giving moles to races that do not currently allow you to put them down.
Putting Au Ra horns on a Lalafell was given as an example of what they don't want to do. Racial identity is important to them and the players both.
I'm not so sure about "large part". I personally believe that even if 6.x do the traditional .3 - .4 split, DT would still be a very flawed expansion. If anything, I struggle to come up with what more they could introduce in 6.4 and 6.5 if they decided to start the transition to DT there. Unlike in previous expansions where things has been build up over the years (and especially by ARR laying the foundation), DT is kinda a "fresh start", which means we have nothing else except introducing characters (as they can't really show Tural at this time)
And honestly I think DT simply doesn't have enough substantial material for lengthy msq, which is why the first half of it comes off as being padded as heck, to me at least.
Looking at mobile games to judge where FFXIV goes in the future? Auto pathing? lol whoever came up with these ideas needs to go. They are essentially alienating their western market this way and just putting more nails into their coffin.
Time to WoW it full time I guess, esp with this amazing Midnight housing update that makes XIV housing look like....well like something I cannot say on the forums.
the focus need to go entirely away from ultimates and savage and actually maybe focus more on the core game, it would be nice for a change, and nope I am not opposed savage and ultimates... but let me put it like this... savage and ultimate should be like 5% of the update to the game where as the other 95% is adding to the game as it is for the actual core players.
Before yelling nasty words at me... the way I am trying to put it is that you get the amount of hard content as it is now and has always been but actually be adding additional 95% more to the game as in general as well.
It is all like Dungeon, trial... ilevel update content with new 'raid' (enhanced Trial and ex Trial)
A bigger investment into the game as it is than just the basics to try and keep it alive with the absolute basics as it is currently been going for the past few years.
He's not wrong about mobile games, but only focusing on them makes me nervous. It's more than just mobile games, other multiplayer games, and RPGs are leaving MMOs in the dust. They should be looking at those as well.
The problem with normal content and the core game is just the lack of incentive to actually engage with it more than once.
They just need to be less afraid of trying to steer people away, or less afraid of asking them to engage, and to be honest... Resource allocation only solves this to a very small extent.
I honestly can't see deviating away from savage nor ultimate will solve that much to be honest.
I think that combat with bosses does need a major update and overhaul but then with the delay / snapping we have how the reflex of a player will determinate if they are good?
due to this issue already certain bosses ain't match the telegraphs.
So i hope we won't receive snappppp fiesta like already does exist with fall guys event.
The entire thing is padded. "Lets spend a full zone familiarizing ourselves with the culture of these interdimensional soul vampires before we pass any kind of judgment" shouldn't have fucking happened. If the characters were actually being written as themselves, they should all have started formulating a plan and putting it into motion, because they should know that preventing souls from reaching the Aetherial Sea or dredging them up from it endangers the Source and all remaining shards even ignoring the morality of it.
So much this. People do not come to play FFXIV for the raiding, they come because they are told the game itself, the world, story and playerbase are fantastic.
If you get someone to join and they then have to realize that the experience they were expecting while leveling (slow, at times tedious and time consuming) just is not that and that the real focus is, in fact, on instances just like in other MMOs it is fully to be expected that they will leave before they can get as attached as more veteran players are who might be hesitant to jump ship.
FFXIV used to be considered the 'casual MMO'. It's what hooked me after years of burning myself out in WoW and it kinda feels like that identity is getting lost in favor of streamlining production.
I think content like Exploratory Missions should evolve into more engaging content like Eureka Hydathos. That was peak performance. Challenging content with aggro enemies and high-HP enemies followed by a whole system of taking on an even harder Proto-Ozma.
I just wish Occult Crescent could aspire to be Eureka Hydathos.
Hard agree, honestly. My biggest issue with DT was the first half due to being a boring meaningless slog, but the second half was also absolutely horrid because of this. I couldn't even believe we were CONSIDERING humoring these people abusing souls like they were given everything the previous story had established about the cycle of souls and the Aetherial Sea. We aren't talking about "culture" here, we are talking about gluttony so extreme you are perverting the very cycle of reincarnation to keep yourself breathing or gain power. I was flabbergasted, the first thing we should have done was recoil in disgust and the second thing should have been to set all their trapped souls free and destroy the means of harvesting, not go comfort the populace and try to make them feel better about potentially dying eventually. That could all come later.
I disagree with that, but only because Hydatos is the final part of Eureka, and OC isn't. Please don't put high difficulty content (or rather content needing high organisation in this case) in the middle of the narrative. put that at the end, like they did with BA.
That's how I feel about The Arcadion.
The whole thing is annoying that we're a fighter. We can't just meet these people outside of the arena and tell them their lives are at stake?
What is even the point of us participating?
If they don't listen to our heeds, go ahead and kill yourselves. Knock yourselves out. Doesn't affect us one bit.
It's just bad writing all around, really. The entire expansion from start to finish is boring, nonsensical, poorly paced, and directly spits in the face of the previous story and the source material. Even the side content like the Arcadion, as you pointed out is pure drivel. I will honestly be very surprised if the guys who wrote it still have jobs come 8.0. I don't even know how they messed up this colossally considering this expansion was supposed to be FF9 themed and FF9 is my favorite entry in the series. They had a WEALTH of ideas to draw from with it and instead we got this slop, I have to wonder if the writers even played FF9 or just read a synopsis ChatGPT spat out at them. FF9 tackles subjects like thanatophobia and nihilism beautifully while DT just kinda says "People are afraid to die but if you're nice to them they get over it eventually, also yum yum tacos!". Like, are you kidding me? What?
Plus DT didn't even introduce the thanatophobia theme until halfway through which gave me EXTREME whiplash. Contrast this to previous expansions where the message they try to get across is introduced VERY early, sometimes even pre-expansion. Take for example how Endwalker was HEAVILY dealing with nihilism and the meaning of life, we got hints of that message in the Shadowbringers patches when Fandaniel declared he wanted everyone to die in an orgy of pain and suffering.
Honestly it felt odd to try and use 9 in general as nihilism is, as I pointed out, one of its central themes. We just dealt with this as a theme in EW, and they clearly didn't want to double dip there so they just half-assed it and went for the thanatophobia side of 9 alone which without the other piece for context really just falls flat as they chose to avoid nihilism at all costs here when it truly goes hand-in-hand with thanatophobia in the source material. They shouldn't have used 9 here at all and instead saved it for way down the road imo and should have picked another entry for DT, they shot themselves in the leg from the very beginning.
I appreciate that you think patches should get harder as time goes on, genuine props there, but meanwhile OC is an absolute *chore* and not even remotely fun. If you're not playing Forked Tower, and demiatma is already done, all you have going for it is playing more phantom jobs which have been a terrible grind.
I'd expect it to at least be Eureka Pagos or Anemos at the barebones basics.
This is the second time recently that he has steered FFXIV towards appealing to "busy people in modern society". Patch cycles are already about 4 weeks longer on average, and anyone with just 2 million gil (which you can easily get from the MSQ and a few tomes) can stop playing at X.0, return 2 years later at X.5, and simply buy a crafted set to be fully geared for the entire expansion. What else do we need? Most casual content they release doesn't last long either...
I do think we are going to see a transition toward more F2P aspects being integrated. I would not be surprised if we see more in-game rewards, a seasonal battle pass, and other features from popular MMOs and mobile games get implemented. My biggest fear is they do go F2P and then keep a monthly sub for folks wanting access to certain perks each month like ESO. But I feel a move in this direction will ultimately see a quality nosedive.
Sadly this is entirely to be expected from a studio that thinks NFTs and AI are the future for gaming. Profit first and foremost.
I miss the times when games were for the most part made for the sake of having made a cool game, not only to make the stocks go up...
And for the love of the Twelve, don’t put normal-level rewards (field notes and Triad cards) in the high difficulty, PITA to organize content! I will forever be disgruntled that Forked Tower didn’t get a normal mode, even more so if there’s a reward for collecting all the notes like Bozja did. IMO it killed any replayability of the zone for me, and makes me feel like I’m missing a big chunk of the zone experience before going into the next zone.
"racial identity is important to us and the players!"
>Viera/hroth still don't have unique hempen sets.
Be real Yoshi, you're not gonna make the devs whip them up because then everyone else will feel entitled to new things and that's too much work, just fit all of them to every race already.
Yes? He might not have the one and only input on decisions but Joshi-P absolutely has massive influence on things that are done or not done in FFXIV. Just look at the focus on BLM, the JP data centers, the focus on the JP playstyle and the fact that this game has mostly been following his vision.
And let's be real, any stock holders and big boys in the company will be behind making FFXIV more like a mobile MMO because there's big bucks in mobile games. Why the hell do you think they have been developing a mobile version?
Yeah. I do not think they will retain their base if they kill off FFXIV in favor of creating it as a competitor to the mobile market. Almost feels like they just gave up on being a proper MMO because that is expensive and a lot of work and mobile games are the easy big money option at the moment. Absolutely baffling that we on one hand have Blizzard going 'yeah we look at what other MMOs are doing actually and what their people love and try implementing it in our game' and SE on the other hand just shrugs their shoulders and goes 'You know what we should do as the MMO known for innovating and revolutionizing the MMO space? Let's gut the game completely and turn it into a mobile cash grab. Yes, that will work long term and our fans will love this!'
You will not be alone in that exodus should they go down that road, so much is clear.
You guys got the short end of the stick, too. Nothing wrong with Midlander hempen set (I am a midlander after all lmao) but Elezen would have looked amazing. Or Highlander. Or Miqo'te. I would love to see them adapted to all races, they're just clothes after all.
Despite all of this people posting here are still on copium mode.
