New Player Etiquette

This isn't a "OMFG NEWBIES BEHAVE" but a: Seasoned players chill out a bit.

I'm not a newbie, but one of my partners is a long time Fiesta online vet, WOW vet etc -- He just started a couple months ago, and is now ALMOST in mid Endwalker (first half).

For the most part, 7 times out of 10 - most people have been fairly chill. Mentors that sure aren't perfect, but a few that aren't perfect have at least attempted to be on their best behavior, and at least of course - mentor the sprout the best way they could.

Weirdly enough my minor complaint isn't with mentors - we know a few of you don't always respect the Mentor rules - and that's like normal for XIV... As a trade mentor i've even been ABUSED PERSONALLY over having a trade crown because of that (sadly).

It's with seasoned players that AREN'T a mentor.

And no, it's not even with tanks.

If you're a DPS with a new-ish tank that isn't as fast as you like, and your healer asks you to SLOW THE HECK DOWN? (And you're losing health faster than your fellow melee because you decided to tank the dungeon as a melee yourself?).

Please slow down.
Don't leave the dungeon, don't be rude - just slow down.

These are just story dungeons, this isn't savage content. Totally valid if you don't like him not pulling wall to wall, but thats him - he's getting used to the mechanics and will start pulling more when he's used to mechanics.

As someone who has been learning to tank themselves it's INCREDIBLY important we still give "STORY" space to those that are walking through things -- new jobs, new story - new content.

I mean granted I don't expect the same treatment as a sprout since I have a level 100 GNB and i'm 81 on WAR... But I admit i'm not a great tank, i'm a DPS main with a strong side heal game.

But dude, I request heavily: Please don't pull mobs before the tank unless you're going to BRING THEM TO THE TANK. I wasn't healing, this was Tower of Babil, and you literally in both sections before the first boss just sat there and pulled first.

Maybe you're an amazing viper, ninja whatever -i'm not knocking you.
But to whatever players still do this in story dungeons and then LEAVE after being politely told not to do the thing?

Don't do that LOL.

2. No i don't pay your sub, but I can promise you this isn't a knock on your job skills
3. Anyone who does this just don't.

Gentle reminder to the crystal player base: JUST CHILL it's just a story dungeon.
We're all level 100s grinding likely to get mentorship one way or another - You'll get there faster if we chill out and have fun while yes- taking the mechanics seriously...

but mechanics aren't "I'm the tank." when you're a Melee DPS. You ain't got enough mitigations to survive. Even as a SAM main, I know i don't. :) :cool:

Respectfully, if you are tanking post lvl 50.. pull more and get the dungeon over with. Simple as. I can give leeway to tanks at 50 and below. Above that? Nah, pull more and keep up the pace.

Before we had the Mentor system, it was just seasoned players. The truth is that seasoned players in any MMMORPG I've ever played have often become overconfident, impatient and determined to do things the most efficient way, forgetting that new players don't want that. They want to be lost, take things slow, experience this new world and absorb it slowly and figure it out. But the seasoned players sometimes don't feel like doing that because they've seen it all before.

While some people who have the trade crown are genuinely experts at crafting and gathering, it's mostly a common way for sprouts to stay in the Novice Network or to shortcut their way to mentor status. A good example of the sort of people who would pick it up are twitch viewers who will bring their twitch lingo into the Novice Network and it's obnoxious and disruptive.

Moreover, what has bothered me in the past is seeing them answer battle-related questions that they don't actually know the answer to. Because they don't know the answer, they try to google it (which gives them an outdated or wrong answer) or they go and blindly quote The Balance or some other discord, rather than answering the question directly with knowledge they actually possess themselves.

I always feel that when someone has got battle mentor status that, in the vast majority of cases, they actually have a lot of battle experience and got the status naturally, and the answers more often feel like they are from years of actual experience playing the game.

So my guess is that it stems from people not appreciating the low requirements for trade mentor status.

Personally, when I see trade mentors in duties I expect that they know things. Not necessarily the amount battle mentors do - there are going to be gaps in their experience. But usually wearing that is them trying to say they want you to expect more of them, to know some basic things, such as using tank cooldowns, how to heal, etc. Because while a few crafter/gatherer mains will use it, 99% of the time it's just battle players in disguise.

Didn't quite understand your specific example here. But I can tell you, as a tank main myself, that it has always been the case that seasoned players (whether they be healers or DPS) have either run ahead and pulled themselves, asked that more be pulled, randomly abandoned the duty when they noticed it was slow, or flat out insulted the tank at some point.

Once I started doing big pulls, the complaints stopped. Never had them again in almost 10 years. No abandons, nothing. There was 1 person who complained that I did big pulls but they could handle healing them fine, and they were "concerned" about other people enduring my pulls rather than themselves. Yet, again, not a single other person has struggled with them nor expressed a problem with it.

It doesn't always happen, and if I heal/DPS myself, I just roll with however the pulls are and let the tank choose what to do. But from experience this isn't the case 100% of the time, sadly, and you will find people even on these forums that won't agree with letting them experience it slowly their first time.

The argument for experiencing it slowly has also diminished since Duty Support was added, because now you can do dungeons your first time with NPCs and take it slowly.

You can lvl up jobs without ever playing it (FL/beast tribes/WT per example). So using the LVL of the player is kind of a bad indicator.
You're free to suggest to the new tank to pull more but if they don't feel comfortable doing it, does it hurt to respect their wishes? Doing single pulls vs doubles only really adds like 5 mins to the dungeon clear. Sure it's the millionth time you're doing it but it may be their first.

Ultimately though, it's up to the group. Majority wins for wanting to go faster or not. If you can't stand it, you're free to leave the group.

Then that is on the tank to understand their job. They have 50 levels to get used to their kit. 50 and below, I will give them all the time they want, let them set the pace and learn.

Above 50? No, I expect them to start to understand their job, skills and role. If they are uncomfortable doing that, do duty support at early levels.

Also, add to that, this example the OP is talking about Tower of Babil. Like, come on.

And look, to be fair, if you are melee DPS and going to do this? I will also be expecting you to use your Arm's Length, Bloodbath and Second Wind.

Respectfully, everybody is entitled to do with their limited lifetime what they want. If you want to play really slow - ok, you can do that. But other people can also decide they don't want to participate in that and click the "Leave" button.

Ignoring everything else I have a question:

What trash pulls in dungeons actually have a mechanic beyond auto attacking and throwing an aoe MAYBE once a pull, sometimes? This is what causes wall pulls to be the norm. There's no mechanics to trash pulls, Tower of Babil is no exception.

Shadowbringers dungeon trash has many casts that should be interrupted or stunned. Not doing this makes it significantly harder to heal. While it is possible to heal through, it's equally fair to say that the tank should have interrupted or stunned certain attacks. This was a gimmick they did throughout Shadowbringers to add sophistication for tanks, but of course they wanted to continually dumb it down into Endwalker.

Alright so this reminds me of Dohn Mheg with the frogs, and the one or two mobs at the start that periodically do a stronger hit. The end result is otherwise the same, auto attacks and an occasional stronger slap. Holminster Switch uh... the manticores near the end that sometimes need to be stunned out of their aoe? Those are irrelevant though since they're avoidable point blanks.

Still means wall pulls are the norm. Majority of the time it's still boring trash mobs that sometimes do an aoe or minibuster (though calling them that is generous).

Criterions might not have been overly popular but they at least had interesting trash mobs.

If he's already in Endwalker then he should be used to pulling multiple packs. If he wants to go one at at time then used the Duty Support.

Just because you're the tank, doesn't make you the main character. There's 3 other people in the dungeon with you. I'm fine with stopping at the final boss for people to watch the cutscene if they're new, but pick up the pace during the boring trash packs. There's nothing scenic or "storylike" about slowly fighting the same enemies you've seen dozens of times before.

ShB has a single mob in two places in a single dungeon that needs to be interrupted, the Dohnfast Fauth in Dohn Mheg. There's no other interrupts in all of ShB iirc that are even remotely threatening. Even doing the full W2W pull between the 2nd and 3rd bosses in Anamnesis Anyder is less dangerous than not interrupting the Fauth. And the W2W pulls in Mt. Gulg are dangerous simply because of the number of mobs, not any special mechanics that are casted.

Cmon really?! The trash in every dungeon is handled the exact same way, pull, use cooldowns THERES NOTHING NEW TO LEARN lol. Walk in dungeon, grab big pull, if you die, adjust and pull a little smaller.

IF a tank or healer has decided to level via any other method outside of virtually INSTANT queue dungeons then that's their problem.

I will give tanks up to the first boss, if it's gone smooth and been no deaths and the pull hasn't increased then ill "accidently" hit extra mobs with gravity

Frankly, some players simply ask for YPYT mentality. I even just let he die when I'm healing if he's not pulling for the tank.

Nah, let their salty a** leave. If they run ahead of the tank and don't bring mobs back, I'm not chasing them out to Narnia to heal them. I encourage my tanks to pull more since I can handle it but I also don't care if they pull small. I just adjust and add more dps since I need to watch health less. So a salty dps running ahead is going to die in my parties because I'm going to be back there with the tank.

true... but you still can start with a low lvl dungeon. thats what i do with every new job to get used to the new skills.
lvl 30, 60, 80.
you dont have to be a genius to come up with that.


i do think they should change it though. i think you should only be able to learn dark knight as a lvl 30 warrior or paladin. and gunblade as a lvl 60 tank.
and schoolar as a lvl 30 conjurer.

I mean, lets be real. If someone picks up GNB and immediately goes into a dungeon, I am going to expect them to know how to tank. Even then, that starts at 60. So ok, yea. But come on, SHB/DT/EW dungeons? No, you should know what your job does. And if you dont want to level up in dungeons and learn how to actually tank and and you get 20+ levels, that is on you as a player.

Sure, they could've gone with Gunbreaker as their first tank, or used a level boost, or leveled entirely through frontlines.
But that's on them, it was their choice to not go through the normal leveling process and gradually get used to the role.

And if someone decides to skip that part then it's on them to learn how to play their job before jumping into higher level content with others, not on everyone else to accomodate it.

The funniest Prae run I ever had was with a tank who I suspect was on shrooms. Apparently he decided the best approach to handle the bosses was to kite them. Most fun I've ever had in there.

Because there is very little of interest in trash pulls, even if the dungeon has fun bosses, like I really love the 1st and 2nd bosses of Strayborought for example, getting to those bosses is hardly interesting, so skip past them as fast as possible becomes the norm.

A friend of mine started playing xiv because they loved how Gunbreaker looked, they grabbed it as soon as they could (I think they job skipped on something they had no interest in)
They still went and learned how to tank in general, make big pulls, etc.

I specifically turned off my crowns and never bother renewing despite being able to simply because, as a mentor, people get distracted by the crown instead of focusing on learning. Collection of thoughts:

1. Lowlvls under 50? Sure, do it slowly, my baby.
2. High lvls above 50, doing Heavensward? Bro, you have plenty of time to learn, keep up. Stop wasting other people's time.
3. I notice a less-skilled player and push them to improve, so i carefully pull more to pressure them into going faster but not too much so we wipe. If i die because i was reckless that's on me, no worries.
4. If a healer is pulling ahead of the tank that's pretty shameful of the tank, pull more, please. See points 1, 2 and 3.
5. DPS need to do more damage when tanks pull properly because if trash takes too long to kill, healer and tank may run out of cooldowns in a W2W. If you don't know how to play the job then find a target dummy and practice, read the tooltips and put 2+2 together, practice in Duty Support. This is problem-solving skills they teach in primary school. Keep up.
6. if you're distracted irl, be it a pet, baby, family or work then don't queue up with randoms, don't waste other people's time.

It's not about elitism, it's about respect of others and not wasting their time. The bar is set quite low, you can even ask for a break if you have to use the bathroom or answer the door. It's not a big deal, but sabotaging a run out of negligence or needless incompetence is disrespectful.


Like i said: if you're learning a new job and ask in chat to go slower because you JUST unlocked Gunbreaker and it's your first tank: it's ok, no worries. Make sure to practice on a target dummy to set your action bars first AND do a Duty Support run to practice BEFORE you match with randoms.

You can have any playstyle you want with bots or friends, don't hold other people back on purpose. It's one thing to have some sort of physical disability or be a newbie in Sastasha. I will absolutely wait for you and pull one by one if you're a new player learning. This isn't elitism, it's basic civism. This happens everywhere: driving a car too slow, taking too long at the ATM, strolling across a zebra crossing, stretching your legs over a narrow public corridor. it's just impolite to waste other people's time. These exames are just extensions of the same thing.


I am happy to teach and guide anyone TRULY new and willing to learn. I find such people are never slow, they strive to improve and push themselves, and often thank me for helping them. Purposefully holding others back due to some toxic sense of individuality is something i'm quite alergic to. I apolagize, it is difficult to explain the difference despite being a simple concept.

I disagree. I will attempt to collate them since we're in a maintenance, if I can find good examples.

Whether they are threatening may subjectively depend on the tank and the healer, but when they were current I saw many wipes and even occasionally still do, particularly in Dohn Mheg, The Twinning, Anamnesis Anyder and Amaurot. I've also found them tough as a healer myself in some cases. Battle system changes and gear changes will have had an effect, but it really depends on the party overall.

Additionally there were loads of interrupts on hunts. It was always fun when someone missed either Dragon's Voice or Ram's Voice because either all the melees got hit bad, or all the ranged jobs got hit bad. They added an interrupt in Ktisis' last boss then they just continued dumbing tanks down after that, giant hitboxes and all.

There are actually some interesting ones in ARR and Heavensward and to a lesser extent Stormblood, but it felt like they were actually trying to add them on purpose in Shadowbringers as you can see with Dohn Mheg and the Berserk cast in The Twinning, to make use of their new "flashing interrupt" that replaced Silence. Now it's mostly just trash and 1 big enemy with too much HP.

Because I like seeing the game providing me a clear feedback that I & my group are doing something right: packs melts away, or XYZ actions are still on cooldown because how good the group is. Also, it’s really one of the few moments you get to use many of your AoE-only buttons because the rest of the game seems really afraid to highlight multi-target situations except FL but that’s a diff issue entirely lol.

Respectfully, be the change you want to see. Newbie good-hearted tanks could have tankxiety and will try their best to not screw it up for the party, making them pull less out of need for safety.
Reassure them they can pull more, teach them that the standard is 2 packs (or wall to wall in later dungeons), make them feel comfortable trusting the healer.

Build their confidence so that they can start pulling more out of habit. If they have a successful run where they themselves decided to pull more and it worked it does 1000x more for them than being forced to play catch up with the group and then just consider it as getting lucky.

I never understood this tanks being uncomfortable with large pulls. If anyone should be uncomfortable it's the healer, the tank just pulls and pops a mit or two the rest is up to the healer (and dps).

It is wild to me that people say SHB/EW/DT content is new players figuring it out so be nice to them. And, if they purchased a story skip, that is really on them too.

Fair enough. I had a Lapis Manalis run where we kept wiping to Galatea Magna who didn't know you could use Esuna to remove the Doom debuff. Had to teach them how to tell which debuffs can and can't be removed with Esuna. They had pleeeeeeeeenty of time to learn, but it's never to late to tell them anyway! :)

Ima be honest. By the time you're almost in ew i'd expect you to know how to play the game. The game is hyper formulaic so if you know one dungeon you know them all. Two packs x2 into a boss with the occasional forced small pull. Watch a guide or something about how to tank but don't waste three peoples time and call them toxic. While their behavior isn't the best either yours is just as bad for refusing to play the game as designed. Not everyone wants to spend 40 minutes in a dungeon. If anything though you were failed by the forced babying of the community that isn't allowed to tell you how to fix those bad habits on threat of report.

Lol most of the time people won't to listen to you. Or worse, sometimes they may even report you for being "toxic". Unfortunately giving advice to people is borderline against TOS in this game because everyone is sensitive.

To the day I remember that Perfect Legend healer in Vanguard i guess. As soon as the dungeon started, they started running and pulled everything. When the tank was done typing "first time", the Perfect Legend had already died gracefully on the next wall.
You would think that with level 100 this guy should have learned the very basic fact not to pull while the tank is not even moving, but no.

Or maybe there is an achievement for the title Perfect Fool that I'm not aware of? In this case I stand corrected :D

Majority of responses is "don't you DARE to disrespect my time being bad". The elitists that swear on someone sugarcoating as "giving incentives to get better".

Those that justify their bad habit of pulling everything, not even bringing to tank (he must know how to play tank by now and yada yada yada) and when he dies (I refuse myself to heal those, that's a waste of MP, it's better for me stay behind tank and when everything melts away start a vote kick on that guy who went Narnia) he have the audacity to blame healer and tank. It's always like that. Never is his fault. Impressive.

When I tank, if DPS pull and die, its their fault.

After all, I'm *never* not attacking the tanks target. What were those DPS attacking, and why wasnt it the tanks target?

They have to learn what mits to use and when. I mean you don't just dump everything on the first set of things you pull. You learn what to match together with what, like putting Nebula with HoC and then next set a Rampart with Reprisal and maybe an Arm's Length if they're particularly spicy. Also how to effectively use your invuln when pulling so you weave that in as normal mitigation and not just an oh-crap button.

And healers need to learn that throwing stones, lasers, and whatever else is *not* their primary job, they need to learn that they are *not* dps, and that if the tank dies it *is* your fault.

We can do this tit for tat thing all day. Im tired of dying because the healer wanted to fling a little stone.
