Since Jumping is confirmed, can we fall off a cliff, take damage, etc?

One major difference between FFXIV world and other MMO worlds is jump and falling off ledges. In other MMOs, you basically can jump and fall anywhere, into the water, off a cliff, everything is open.

So in FFXIV, has this been confirmed: would all the invisible walls be taken out, therefore, we can jump off a cliff of La Noscea , into the sea? Everytime I'm fishing, I get this urge to just jump, and this has always been my dream.

Jump in combat is confirmed. You can jump during combat to stop your cast.

Yes, It's been confirmed we can Jump in combat.

Level DRG and you can do it now.

This is one of the main reasons that people were against jump to begin with...

The jumping advocates thought it breaks immersion not being able to jump, so the Devs added in jumping but with very little gameplay value to it (I understand the 2.0 maps will have small obstacles and short cliffs you can navigate via jumping, but that's pretty much it).

We will still have invisible walls on huge cliffs, and other large obstacles. Before jumping, those weren't immersion breaking, but they will be afterwards.

"Be careful what you ask for" is the lesson here, I suppose.

I hope fall damage is implemented alongside jumping. I don't t want walls everywhere (invisible or otherwise). Give me freedom to explore the world at my own peril.

I agreeee, I want it to happen that if I was on auto-run, and I got to a cliff, I would fall because I wasn't paying attention. Which happens often to me in other MMOs. I don't want to be stuck at invisible wall.

I would agree, but I'd say the chance of the devs going down that road are slim to none. Better to just get used to the ideas of invisible walls, because that's what we are getting.


Try playing Demon's/Dark Souls if your really want your fill of dangerous exploration :)

Yeah lol its a FANTASY world...realistic and fantasy is kind of an oxymoron. I thought the whole point of playing MMO is to do as many things as possible you can't do in reality.

No thanks. Sorry, while I have no issue with jumping being introduced (I'm fairly ambivalent), this is a feature a I can do well without.

Autorun > afk to make coffee > return with coffee > you've broken your legs AND your Chocobo~<3

As far as I've heard, mounts won't be able to jump due to the complexity of the animation involved and other environmental issues. Not sure if it was totally ruled out, though.

The realistic comment is regarding that FF games (especially late era) uses a more realistic approach to Fantasy design -- so it's easy to understand what he was referring to. It's a fantasy world but there are genres in fantasy that favors realism.

Also doesn't make any sense. Complexity of animation what? Every MMO out there has mounts that can jump. And instead of just a chocobo, they have multiple mounts that need animation, tigers, horses, skeletal horses, dragon,

chocobo-like bird like below.

Most people would be too lazy to jump off a small safe cliff...hell some people are too lazy to jump at all!

It doesn't make sense because you don't understand it. Most MMOs don't have mount/dismount or even varied animation per race and gender -- this leads to more complex issues revolving around the different animations that need to be played and worked together.

It's not impossible to do but it will get glitchy given the graphical detail in this game. Do you think a lot of modern games lack certain aesthetics for the sake of it?

That's an attack animation, they've already confirmed you can't jump in combat.

There are no plans for using the jump for any elements of gameplay it’s just there for those that want to jump. You won’t be able to jump to avoid Ifrit’s attacks or anything.

You can jump in combat. it just wont do anything other then interrupt your spell. Hes just saying you can't avoid attacks with it.

Are you sure they didn't mean dragoon jump? Like anyone can jump?

Im pretty sure he was talking about normal jumps not benefiting the player in combat. DRG jumps will still have their normal effects

The logic here is that I play a MMO to do exactly what I cant and dont do each day IRL :o I can't cast magic in reality but I can in MMO. I can't fly in reality with wings but I can in mmo, I think that is the point folks are trying to get across.

I see your point entirely...but it defeats the purpose of why a lot of people play mmo :o

Let's face it: The only thing in MMO history jumping off a cliff to your doom has gotten anyone is an achievement in WoW.
People don't need to commit digital suicide, nor do they need the freedom to do so.

Accidentally falling off a cliff, dieing, and thus being pissed off because you have to return to a place most likely far off from where you were originally as well as deal with gear damage from accidentally falling is not freedom of any sort either.

So really, what are you all missing here?

I think you should be keenly aware that none of our characters are going to sprout wings in 2.0 so we wont be able to fly into the sky just before meeting our demise at the bottom of a cliff.

Being able to cast magic or be a dragoon in the game and obviously not being able to be those in real life has nothing to do with the fact that you wish to throw yourself off a cliff. Most people don't wish to die in real life... I have a feeling the fake people of Eorzea don't wish to die either.

It's sad that I have to explain this.

What's not to understand? The game he's referencing has hundreds of mounts which need animations for 10 races (soon 11). XIV has 2 mounts for 5, more if you count variations per race which are insignificant aside from midland/highland hyur.

Probably should have been more specific... I'm looking forward to jumping in the world etc.. Can't wait to see people bunny-hop in Ul'dah..

But at the same time, with PvP coming down the pike, I'd hate to see it have an in-combat effect aside from cancelling a spell.

But anyway..haha yeah in Lineage II and Aion I would jump off cliffs all the time. Sometimes I would reach 0HP sometimes I would just take a little damage. It was funny and if I "died" I never got upset or mad....me and my friend would almost cry laughing LOL just as funny as when we get one shotted by mobs :D

Also in FFXIV you can't "die" you just get K.O. knocked out. Of course no one wants to die! Well actually you are "defeated" haha :o I think only NPC's in story line can "die"

As for wings - well...we never know! But I said in the MMO I played...not XIV. In Aion I had wings ^^ Ether Saga too!

My whole point is comparing reality to a fantasy game is funny. Again, I said I understood your point so no need to go into detail. In the end it is Yoshi's game, not ours...he SHOULD and will make it the way he wants, and I think thats great <3 :)

Be that as it may, one needn't have varied mount/dismount for race and gender though. That kinda variation is not compulsory. It's all about priorities. If S.E can't make varied animations for race and gender, then they just don't do it. That simple. Chocobos already scale according to heigh of character, so animation can be uniform for each race.


To prove it's possible. Archeage has multiple different mounts, multiple different mount animations (depending on which side you mount from) and different jump/winnie animations for each mount, along with mounted combat, and it certainly never presented a visual problem to people playing that game. So it's definitely nonsense to say S.E. can't add jump to a chocobo if they wanted.

And if you want to talk about glitchy, look no further than the knockback/draw-in animations in this game, or lackthereof.

Oh nevermind, i forgot you don't actually play so wouldn't know.

Something that I always loved about FFXI for its time was that the world felt dangerous. There was a general fear for me, a nervous feeling if you will, that occurred when my character was outnumbered, outmatched, and close to death. It's that feeling you get when your being chased by something for the first time, like when I tried to run to Jueno only to be hunted by those damn saber cats in jugner forest!

I honestly think that ANY video game is loosing out on these "feelings" when the player is surrounded by invisible walls. The threat of falling was missing from many areas of FFXI, and invisible walls were used far too often (to its credit it is an old game.)

Ever fall from some place high in a game and think "oh gawd." A sudden jolt of vertigo hits you, but then you realize its only a game? Those are the kinds of things that make games in general more intriguing to me as a player. Running into hairy situations that become that much more adrenal pumping when you add another layer of danger.

Regardless I am aware that this might be impossible for the dev team to implement. I'll still enjoy the game otherwise.

As for mounts being able to jump, I'm sure you've seen the new screenshots that show the party of adventurers jumping about while on chocobos! :)

In short: We will have invisible walls on high cliffs/walls/etc.
