Yet another review. Spoiler: Sold me happy and new, gave me depressing broken record.

Since you can already tell I am not too pleased with my purchase this expansion -- the first time ever for me in a mainline Final Fantasy -- I'll start off with what I liked.

Graphics: wonderful
Battle mechanics: huge improvement, very fun
Landscapes: cool, varied, interesting, beautiful
Themes: mmm I'm not a huge fan of so closely mirroring Mayan/Incan legends and real world lore but it was well done. The FF9 theme.. have to save that part for later
vocals: amazingly well done

On it's own as some random freemium MMO, I wouldn't have anything to complain about but I wouldn't pay more than $20 on lifetime premiums before moving on either.

First of all I'm going to be brutally honest, knowing that many will be too scared to voice this opinion, but Square, there is a line between catgirl and furry and you done crossed it and she had no other redeeming qualities. Now for a few sure great, do your thing not trying to stop ya but I mean lets be real the appeal is not broad. Wuk Lamat is perhaps the worst character ever conceived not just in appearance but in a complete lack of substance.

Yet that lack of substance is not to blame on character design, but holistically exists to the entire franchise lately. You can't be friends with everyone. You can't just constantly nonstop re-use this pattern:
- We're the "good guys" we don't believe in fighting
- We're going to unite the tribes!
- Anyone standing in our way is gonna die
- Yey bad guys are all converted or dead! Let's dance
- By the way, everyone interesting is going to die to give the story weight, because we have no real stakes.

this is most definitely NOT NEW. and NOT happy go lucky. after the llamas, which had some funny moments, everything was just constantly shoving down your throat how you are the arbiters of what is natural and not, and boy everyone is gonna die - in fact YOU go be the one to genocide them WoL

This is supposed to be a fantasy game not a constant lecture in entropy. I thought Endwalker was well done but not if you can't let go of that constant freaking nihilism. It wasn't enough to destroy the stories like this, but it's been creeping more and more and more into every FF release since ff10. Good grief! get over yourself whoever has a crush on the heat death of the universe. get a room already. We have reality for that crap. This world is for us to feel like epic, adventuring, fate destroying legends. Fantasy. Escapism.

Hear, Think and Feel what I'm saying cause you are losing the plot and pandering to a loud 2% of your player base. I rarely speak up but when I do, you can bet your butts that if you A/B test my mentality vs lets make bahamut a ... well never mind just you will make more money, better stories and happier fans.

If you started out saying to yourself the game will definitely..
- not let me explore beyond the story
- act like deep bonds exist between ppl who just met
- put those bonds ahead of family ties and decades long rivals
- make 1 dimensional NPCs that you can easily forget next expansion filling every town
- make a huge deal out of collecting random garbage
- acknowledge that you're the WoL and could solve things instantly, but let 1000 ppl die anyway

then you would be 100% correct in every situation

oh but the WoL wouldn't just step in and assert an actual moral value or put down the obvious evil plot. that would be taking the offensive!
what would the world think if our 500th girl boss actually had a reason to affirmatively take action beyond lets all hug?

worst of all, you had all the cards to play for a great time but you just held on to your formulaic rules so tight that all creativity possible is gone, all depth is gone and I found myself actively wishing I could play against the party because you basically made us evil. guess i'm team zodiark now. smh.

what even was that? some of the map music is good..but the main theme.. what is even going on ??! did you hire actual alley cats to sing it off pitch on purpose?

That aside, I agree that XIV’s story has become a “depressing broken record”.

We’ve ended up with this strange and seemingly unintentional juxtaposition: struggling, suffering, sacrificing, killing, and dying for a better future—a future where, you would assume, there will be less need for people to struggle, suffer, sacrifice, kill, and die—is presented as a good and noble thing, but any society that manages to distance itself “too much” from those things (pain, conflict, death, etc) is presented as unnatural, indolent, and a cancer that will doom itself/the world/the universe if it isn’t destroyed. Unless the intended lesson is “pain and death, in and of themselves, are the source of virtue and meaning”, I can’t tell what they’re trying to say.

None. None times.

You can go ahead and shout your opinions from the rooftops, but you're in the lore subforum, so I'm gonna hit you with that. We have never come back from the dead. That's not what the Echo does, that's not what healer rez spells do. We've bounced back from nearly dying a fair handful of times just in the MSQ, but at no point where we in a stage where we could medically be called dead. Nor has anyone else we've 'revived', although a few of them got into some real rough situations.

That is the divide between our healer spells and regulators: regulators fix death. And while at the time in the throne room that was was a 'whoa what just happened' moment, we later learned that the way it does this is really, really bad. Which itself isn't tremendously surprising; this game has always been anti-necromancy in all its forms, it may well be the most concrete and unchanging moral stance the game ever takes, so you can't be that surprised when a new form of raising the dead turns out to be something we have to stop.

The way regulators work, that's purely the writer's choice to throw so much plot at them that it was intractable

- walk there and click
- become the arbiter of death and click
- stand there and do nothing while obvious bad things unfold around you, and click

I feel like I'm watching a Liftetime movie every time Wuk Lamat speaks - and really a lot of the story even not focused around her feels the same. It's all plot armor. In real life her ideals would get squashed in two seconds.

The way Bakool Ja Ja actually had inner conflict, an ornery streak, dad jokes, "good ol days" warrior nostalgia and knew there were good and bad sides to both the conqueror and the pacifist, that was the most interesting thing in the whole plot imo. but it got barely a look. yoshi p even said that it took them by surprised he was popular, yet what are we doing but running around in his footsteps?

How cool it could have been if we were joining at the time of that first conquest instead. It still would have been more unite the tribe story which is their only play apparently... but at least it would have been cool and not a bunch of spoiled rich kids crying about their feelings.




Though that voice actress is on point, I will give them that.
At this point I wish they would use a regulator to bring back Minfillia and have her do that voice instead though.

None of those examples are death. Some of them are very weird, but they aren't death, and the story underlines why they're not. Also, your 'evidence' for the fight against Lahabrea is someone's video title; it's exactly as not-death as everything else, that is not some kind of extra proof.

What, did you want a society to have just cheated death, and for us to respond with 'cool!' and the story about that element to have absolute no moral conflict or weight?

No you fully die when lahabrea kills you, if you dont want to accept the sound effects and lighting's meaning thats on you

and you died in the other timeline that graha went through - as did whole civilizations.

and others have died besides us -- plus originally I'm including every time you wipe in a raid.

That was not confirmed at all and the fact that Hydaelyn spoke to the Warrior of Light - "Surrender not, my child. Look thee into the light and receive the power to banish darkness". I mean, there isn't too much explanation required here - she certainly isn't talking to herself and it's a bit difficult to give power to defeat a foe to someone who is dead.

In fact the wiki description of the event in question says this:
"but the adventurer was defeated in battle by Lahabrea. Hydaelyn intervened once more and bestowed the adventurer with as much strength as she could to help them overpower the Asican paragon"
"defeated in battle" - not "killed in battle".

In fact, we see exactly what happens when Hydaelyn's chosen actually die with Ysayle.

I agree with your point about every actually interesting NPC we meet being killed off. That annoyed the absolute hell out of me in Dawntrail. The only NPC I liked who has NOT been killed off immediately is Shale.

This is an interesting complaint to me, because one that really manifested in Endwalker especially (but was also leveled quite accurately at Stormblood and Shadowbringers) was the remarkable bloodlessness of it; that despite the mortal peril and stakes of it all, there weren't really a lot of deaths.

Now Dawntrail actually does have a fair amount of deaths, and yet we're complaining about that too. I know it's unlikely to be the same people complaining, but how is there a balance to be found here? Or is there not a balance, and the community at large is ultimately happy with a Shadowbringers-style claim of mortal stakes, but the only deaths are nobodies that existed for at most three scenes beforehand?

It was sold to us as a fun, chill, vacation with new modes of storytelling.

They used beat up refurbished story elements, half of it was us watching things we could have easily prevented, half of it was us being forced to do the bad things ourselves

I was a huge fan of Shadowbringers and Endwalker story. They at least meant something. The deaths in Dawntrail you could see a million miles ahead.

Whether you want to say we are on the brink or past the pall, not really a huge issue but if we were just KO then a regular old res would do the trick wouldn't it. But look take that scene however you want -- the point remains they could have applied the same logic to electrope just fine.

They already say electrope's autolife just converts ambient electric aether into the different elements -- just like our crystals -- but for SOME reason that has nothing to do with its usage. Instead it sucks up souls? the heck logic is that?

Fact is the writers just chose to make it depressing instead of optimistic. If they felt like it they could have used any number of plot devices to be lighthearted instead of depressing. I was sold a vacation and I am sick of feeling guilty for progressing story.

We are the killer of dreams and civilizations. We could have stopped Zoraal Ja about 50 different times, a few of which we even seem aware of this but.. wouldn't want to step on any toes you know. Gotta let character development happen at risk of many civilian causalities - or else poor rich kids wont have enough life experience.

It isn't just so many died, but we killed them, directly or by sitting and letting things unfold. It is our fault that Bakool Ja Ja woke up the bird. It is our fault that Gulool Ja Ja, and it is our fault Cahciua died, twice, that Namikka died and anyone that was separated by the distortion. It is our fault the city was attacked because we had about a bajillion and one chances to stop it and knew dang well who the two problem kids were.

Could have thumped them on the head and moved on, but no. nope. We're just soooo neutral we wouldn't do that, but somehow we take it on ourselves to then extinguish a whole race. How are they any less than the Omicrons even? They did not think this through for nothin'.

I think you're confused about electrope. Electrope is totally separate from the regulators and the Endless.

Still at least from my first play through... its weird, so they need souls to fix you soul after you would have died, but only if its unnatural causes, they cant heal some sicknesses or old age.
Good that sets a limit and just makes sure you live your live till the end, ok, fair... but why souls? And whats the limit? the third raid said he did some damage that could not just be healed, so... theres a limit to your resurrection?

Yeah, get sliced in two and you're dead. Teledji Adeledji can attest to that much.

A person has three types of aether: body aether (corporeal), soul aether, and then the memory aether that is Eorzeans/Etheryians used to think was kind of stuck to the soul aether.

But even back in Shadowbringers we learned that corporeal aether and soul aether and memory aether can all be handled differently, if you're careful. We put both the Crystal Exarch's soul AND memories into his soul shard and trucked it back to the Crystal Tower on the source, which is why the tower was able to let us in (it recognized the blood of the Allagan royal line in the soul crystal container thingy.)

Emet-Selch, Hermes, and Hythlodaeous had their memory aether fucked around with but kept their soul aether perfectly intact thanks to Kronos. The Forum members, too, locked their memory aether under a binding spell without touching their soul aether. Those spells all dissolve in the aetherial sea so you get your missing memories back... IF the soul ever makes it there.

The unnatural problem with Alexandria is that they broke the cycle with the aetherial seal. The memory aether is stripped away from the souls, then stored in the cloud. Instead of locking away bad memories, they stole them and uploaded them. The Endless are all unplugged, but are those memories still intact in the unplugged storage? Can those souls ever be reunited with their lost memories in the aetherial sea? So many questions.

If you haven't picked up in the whole story so far the importance and power of souls, then I don't know what else to say. Life need a soul. The Alexandrians are siphoning souls from Etheirys and using them to bestow extra lives. If you can't see how this is bad then I don't know what to say.

Also stop saying we killed people. We did not. They were already dead. We interacted with ghosts of the long dead that were draining the life force of the planet to give them form. Cahciua died long before we even got there. Letting them stay like that means consigning the star to die, thus everyone in existence.

You also cannot say that we indirectly killed people by letting Zoraal Ja live at the start. We are not an executioner, deciding who deserves life dependent on what they might do. In fact there was not much foreshadowing to Zoraal Ja going so crazy. In the dungeon we meet him he's basically "lol, you can climb up the mountain this other way". He wasn't much harm until he completely lost it, but we are not there to judge who may do bad things in the future.

But you keep stating inaccuracies and then doubling down when you are told the truth of things.

Final Fantasy III: Xande, in his search of eternal life, is willing to sacrifice the entire world to the World of Darkness. The Warriors of Light straight up DIE, and are only brought back to life because Doga and Unei sacrifice themselves to revive them.
Final Fantasy IV: A man is controlled by a being comprised of pure hatred to commit literal genocide. Had Cecil and his crew not stepped in, the world would have been totally destroyed.
Final Fantasy VI: The world is literally destroyed.....
Final Fantasy VII: Had Cloud not overcome his past trauma and confronted Sephiroth (Who literally killed the last surviving member of an entire race), and the spirit of Aerith not assisted in the summoning of Holy, the entire world would have been destroyed.
Final Fantasy X: The world is in a constant cycle of building and destruction in a system devised by Yu Yevon where one companion of the summoner, who has to sacrifice him/herself as part of all this, becomes the very creature destroying the world.
Final Fantasy XI: A Galka talekeeper who was betrayed by traveling companions becomes the Shadowlord, who starts a war intent on destroying humanity. A couple 10000+ year old siblings from an ancient civilization seek to open the path to the gods at the expense of the world. Others from that same ancient civilization seek to unshackle the God of Destruction in order to usurp his power, unleashing an angry diety upon the world that is eager to get revenge on the very civilization that shackled him in the first place.
Final Fantasy XII: Humanity has already become enslaved to Fal'cie, nearly all-powerful beings, and are essentially glorified livestock.

Which Final Fantasy games DON'T have nihilistic plots?

No it wasn't... it was sold to us as a "Summer Vacation". Yoshi-P was constantly hinting that things were going to get kinda dark at every fanfest. That was never hidden. If you didn't pick up on that, then I would suggest working on recognizing subtle hints, because Yoshi-P's hints weren't even subtle...

Dawntrail lived up to the "Summer Vacation" advertisement in every sense of the phrase:

1: We went to a tropical island nation where we engaged with the locals in entertainment.

2: We had a much lighter story than the previous 4 expansions.

3: Our characters took a "Summer Vacation" from being the main character of the story.

Have buyer's remorse all you like, but don't try to play it off like they advertised something different than what we got.

Now, even as one who enjoyed Dawntrail, I will agree that it was probably the weakest showing of story-telling that the CBU3 team has put forth for us. I chalk that up to partial expectation bias, but also to the fact that this expansion is DEFINITELY the beginnings of setup for a new over-arching plot like the Hydaelyn/Zodiark plot. That requires a certain level of world building that comes across badly at first until you see the payoff. The bigger the eventual payoff, the more world building that's necessary. While I think this was a weak expansion story-wise, I have faith in the CBU3 team to build this story into something grand akin to what they've already given us in the past.

That requires a certain level of world building that comes across badly at first until you see the payoff. The bigger the eventual payoff, the more world building that's necessary. While I think this was a weak expansion story-wise, I have faith in the CBU3 team to build this story into something grand akin to what they've already given us in the past.

1. Did we play the same expansion? What was entertaining about all that talking to the locals? To me it felt more like a tourist brochure with a bunch of meaningless, boring information.

3. We were just a nodding, smiling maid for Wuk Lamat. Not even Krile, Alisaie or even Alphinaud behaved normally towards us. It was as if we were strangers. If someone behaved like that in real life, even though you've known each other for years, that would give me pause.

So, if you like that kind of thing, then I'm happy for you and enjoy the rest of this expansion to the fullest. But when I think of vacation, I think of sun, beach, water or even mountains. Swimming and sitting around the campfire with good friends, telling stories, grilling and eating together. Maybe even camping in tents and playing beach ball or other activities. This wasn't a vacation, not even close, this was disrespectful. We saved the world only to be used by a spoiled princess.

in raids we never die we fall faint but ya I can get why you think die die but it's also a way to well be a MMO. the main character doesn't die at all due to the echo or something else but never we die we get close oh hell ya we do I will not deny it.


also last thing we are exploring a completely new area so completely new lore to discover was it will done weeeell depend but I think you get clouded by your personal preference not gonna lie with you

Dawn trail and the Community promised me a vaction. Relaxing sunlight, surfing on the beach, babes running along the sands like i was watching an episode of baywatch. I was promise no world ending threats just me and.....wait wait something wrong...I feel like im forgetting something important like im repressing....oh no.....

Thats right if your reading this post I just want you to know....No i did not enjoy the msq. Its tone death, lack of interesting race. Wuk ofcourse, terrible va acting, toxic positive community. Theres more but rather I wanna talk about something I really did like.

The locals I find some more interesting than others, the music, the dungeons, and i really cant explain why the arcadian raid is just so amazing. Theres too much to gush about.

Overall no hell no doubly hell no DT is not the beach episode we were promise its just boring sad excuse of expansion.....

Where exactly did I say that it was "entertaining"? "Engaging in entertainment" and finding something "entertaining" are totally different things. We engaged in entertainment with the locals. If you didn't like that entertainment, that's perfectly fine, as what one finds entertaining is subjective. Disliking the entertainment, however, does not make it less "entertainment".

You're reading something in my words that simply is not there. All I said was that they promised a "summer vacation" and delivered a "summer vacation" in 3 different ways. That's an irrefutable fact. Whether or not you enjoyed that summer vacation is subjective.

Ever taken a summer vacation to Disney World? I have. Twice, even. I enjoyed it the first time, but the second was awful. No one in my family enjoyed their time at Disney World the 2nd time. That didn't make it less of a vacation, though.
