Van Darnus's Song's Latin Lyrics

Could I have it? At least one among the player base would be very appreciative if one of the moderators asked the music department in Tokyo to provide us with the text to the song that sounds in the background of the final fight against van Darnus.

I second this.

I keep hearing "Extension, extend!" then a bunch of words. I'm sure they'll get the lyrics out soon, they did for the other primal songs.

I know they say Dalamund at one pint. That's about it.

I understand some latin but the voice recording is really fuzzy and it's hard to tell.

My nephews are learning latin, but I doubt they could help with this yet, lol... Its also pretty hard to hear the words clearly.

I think I hear the Imperium/Imperio part. Can't even hear the Dalamud. And I do Latin quite well, at least on the receiving end. The recording sounds distant and has an "old jukebox" or "period radio" quality that's rather disconcerting.

I've listened to this at least a hundred times since patch day. Now I can memorize the lyrics! It can live right next to Liberi Fatali and One-Winged Angel.

One of the best Final Fantasy battle themes ever!

I have to agree. I am not really an opera style loving person but this is up there in the realms of epic and among my favorite boss battle themes.

Even though it isn't Uematsu writing anymore, I think all of the music so far has followed the trend Final Fantasy was expected to go before XII and XIII went completely in a different direction.

I won't spoil anything, but this battle SCREAMS Final Fantasy from the highest mountain in Coerthas! It is everything I could have ever asked for as a fan, and I am deeply grateful. XIV is quickly becoming a stronger Final Fantasy title than anything else in the past decade, even though the one-player titles are arguably easier to pick up.

And i hope they stick with it. The music of FFXIII-2 was fantastic, something different but it worked very well. I just hope SE wont listen to the "OMG this is different than my childhood FF music U SUCK NAOW QQ"

Am I insane, or are there some -really heavy- references to Adams, Nyman, and other really modern operatic composers being made in this track? My operatic minimalism recognition is a bit rusty, but it seems like the sound team is definitely pulling from an extremely wide - and extremely classical - pool of inspiration.

This was also my favourite thing about FF13's soundtrack - the influence of Debussy and Ravel, and of French impressionism in general, was unmistakable; I love being able to trace musical influences, and the music nerd part of me goes off on an unending squee tangent when it's to something relatively unknown these days. There's a lot of familiar organ toccatas and baroque choral influences, and a lot of modern rock, that are fairly common in VG music, but I love composers - like Mitsuda with his Celtic and world influences, and the FFXIV sound team - that go really far afield and compose things like this that sound really unique as well as incredibly epic.

I -love- this track, I love the XIV sound team; as much as I loved the original ST I'm beyond thrilled to hear the sound team will be doing a significant amount of work for 2.0's background tracks.

The other day I went on a rant at work and Bayohne called me crazy, because I was looping the Darnus song and swore that they were saying “Imperium, imperium, imperium ave.” Vindication is oh so sweet, because it seems players picked up on this as well!

It just so happens that there is a very good reason for this!

Grammatically the lyrics we introduced are correct:

Ave imperium!

However, what is actually sung is:

Imperium!
Imperium!
Imperium ave

“Imperium ave” is grammatically not really a natural expression; however, Latin is an extremely ambiguous language and it seems when Latin is sung anything goes, making this inversion okay!

Being a linguist, this kind of stuff gets me quite excited :P

Square-Enix sure does love their Latin, eh? :)

I knew it was "Imperium Ave" from the start, but I didn't bother saying anything because I knew that "Ave Imperium" was still grammatically correct. Really, as long as its all within its same sentence, you can jumble the words as much as you want and its still correct.

If only i could of taken two years for Latin I, I was forced to take it in 1 year ><. I remember in Latin III, where Cicero wrote a sentence that was a page and a half long.

Bayohne and Camate... I just wanted both of you to know that your reply to my wishful post almost brought tears to my eyes. Not really because of the lyrics, which are great, but rather because this marks the first time a post of mine is ever replied to by a moderator. I never lost the hope, but it was dwindling low.

Imperium ave is correct; in latin, very frequently, if the declensions are right, the order is extremely flexible.

Well, not exactly. In Latin, given the strict declension system--which always tags words letting the listener or reader know what their functions are--the order of the words in a sentence is much more flexible than, say, in English. One can see the vestiges of this in modern Latin-derived languages as well, but not to such a degree.

Poetry (including lyrical poetry, like in this case, or poetry to be sung) usually concedes itself the (well, poetic) license to be more flexible in its syntactical order than colloquial language. Of course, this also happens in English wherever poetic language comes into play, even outside of formal poems: "Paradise Lost" and "There but for the grace of God go I" are only two examples. It is a fact that increased poetical flexibility is common in many languages.
