Yea! go back to the old way
.....
Totally recommend you make a housing alt on OCE and get one there if you're sincere about wanting something more than an apartment. There are over 5000 available plots.
If you're just "no, I want this specific plot, on this specific server" then yeah, that totally sucks for you.
Good luck waiting for a plot to open!
Housing does suck. But if they made apartments more viable then that would help with the housing just a bit. https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/477393
That thread covers what would be ideal and was originally created by Little Arrow.
1. Add an instanced "outdoor" porch:
This to me is possibly the biggest feature that could help players feel they're not missing out on not owning a home, but also not taking away from those that do. A small porch / outdoor area where people can decorate with outdoor furnishing would add more value to the seasonal events and foster good will with players. It wouldn't be as big as the small house yard, but it would at least give players an option.
2. Increase the floorspace (not the floors):
Currently the floorsize of an apartment is not terrible, but could be increased. I could be wrong, but it seems smaller than the basement of small houses. I think it should be increased to the size of the basement of small houses. (I personally believe this should be increased further to the first floor of a medium house) This would be a great quality of life change for apartments and still preserve the special feeling of small/med/large houses of having mult floors.
3. Increase the item space:
Personally, all houses should have an increase item size of at least 50-100. Again, this would allow players more options and higher value all the furnishings added to the game.
4. Provide an option to upgrade apartments to multiple floors in the future:
This is a shot in the dark, but maybe the apartments could be provided with upgrade feature to increase the floors to a small/med/large (penthouse!). Although the outdoor space would stay the same or increase only slightly (still keeping value to the houses), this would provide so many players with the fun of having a home without the disappointment of the very limited current housing system!

Honestly, I love gardening and if they would just let me have a balcony in my apartment that I could garden in, or even let me drop plots on my island sanctuary, then I wouldn't be so desperate for a home of my own. I used to have a medium (before the lottery) but lost it when RL hit me hard. Been trying to get a small just so I could garden again and it has been hell trying to get even a small plot on my server. But then again, I wasn't expecting Faerie to become the new Balmung of Aether when Balmung was removed. *sigh*
Ill trade you mine for the low price of a Peregrine Helm
Don't fall for the housing trap. Just get an apartment.
i have a small house they arnt all that great only the large houses are really worth it but theres so few so goodluck affording one or finding one for sale
1. Should be possible, not only with existing apartments but housing as well.
2. I *believe* there was already a mention about this kind of idea at a Fanfest, where they were toying around with making the insides bigger, i.e., a small house interior could be upgraded to a medium size (or something along those lines - I'm trying to go through Fanfests and look for it).
3. This is already planned after Dawntrail release, increasing glamours and inventory for housing. I don't remember how clear it was to drop more items on floors, but at least inventory is going up.
4. I think this might be an option (#2) but would be nice to have this implemented for all apartments, and be an option to players.
They should make all plots the same size and make it up to you if want to build a small to large home on it. Just make it the bigger the house is the less items you can have out in the yard.
And, in my opinion, the old method was even worse.
I'm fortunate enough to have a small house, and very fond of it - but I would never have obtained it via the old method. I wouldn't have had either the time or the motivation to plant myself next to a placard and click on it almost endlessly on the preposterously slim chance of winning the plot.
Just move to aussie server on the opposite side of planet with with 750 ping bro!
Just get one of these thousands free locked houses bro!
Just keep trying until you get completely burned out and leave forever, bro!
Just apartment is enough to enjoy housing, your greed is hurting the economy!
Any other argument I'm missing?
The housing mirage system notes is from the October Patch note reading, it's a comment Yoshi made that is translated differently between the FFXIV reddit discord and native Japanese speakers.
So until SE makes an announcement, it doesn't make sense for people to be thinking "yay smalls are all of a sudden going to be larges on the inside, every plot will get 400 interior slots and 400 storage slots".
Other native JP speakers have translated as the interior layouts will have more settings to choose from, for example a no pillar option, no center staircase in a large or side staircase in a medium, a blank space where you can create your own floors, smalls having a top second floor rather than a basement or one really tall floor.
Not to mention void builds which SE has reset once before and don't want people to build out there, so why not allow void builders the space to do what they are doing but inside the bounds SE needs for server stability.
The glamour system simply changes the look of what is being represented. I personally don't see how more storage space (aka more slots, smalls all getting 800 slots instead of 400) would tie into that when they struggle as is for server space.
It's not for me to kill anyone's hopium though, believe whatever you want as long as people don't spread misinformation and then harass the devs later when the misinterpretation is wrong.

Happy HousingQuote:
・パッチ7.x中を予定しているが柱がない家の内装をまるごと別のもの変える、全く別の広さを持った内装に変えるみたいな仕様を進めている
→ミラージュ的な設定?
Patch 7.x will see housing interior capable of setup without pillars, and a specification that changes how you change your house interior to something completely different from what we have right now (and also completely different in terms of spaciousness)
-> Something like a housing version of glamour settings?
・パッチ7.0でも新アクションが追加されローテーションも変わるジョブも多いと思う
This is false even at a non-subjective stand point. You don't get enough items to properly fill a large so you either have to chop off the basement or have a lot of empty space.
Smalls are unironically the best for using the space to its full potential without looking like part of your floorspace is going bald.
I have a small and I still have tons of slots left its full enough. It also took me ages to figure out what to decorate it with. I can't imagine doing anything larger just for me.
An FC though would benefit better with a medium or large. Multiple people using the same space.
And to address the housing sucking issue:
The lottery is way better than standing at a placard for 20 hours constantly clicking, only for someone to swoop in and hit it at the right time. The lottery is way more fair and while it will lower your chances, I would still rather put in a bid and walk away, than clicking on it, slowly dying.
Thank you for that! Every time I tried to look it up, I kept getting the same earlier translation of “changing the interior of a house with a completely different size but does not have pillars… mirage-like setting.” Good to have an alternative translation!
Honestly it would be awesome to have any size interior inside any size exterior. As the insides are instanced anyway, it’s certainly possible. But with this translation, it almost makes me hopeful that they’re going for even more customization of interiors than we thought. Old translation makes it sound like “ok you can have a large inside and a small outside.” New translation makes it sound like something that will allow us to control the layout a lot more… the spaciousness comment would still make me hopeful that size is involved. With the removal of the pillars being present in both translations, and the second one saying glamour instead of mirage, I’m wondering if it’s more a way of hiding or even changing or moving windows and such on the inside. Or even an interior glamour system like we had for the island exterior? Who knows?
I know whatever it is, it’s planned for 7.x, along with the interior item limit increases. But I really wish they’d give the housing enthusiasts at least a short segment in the midst of the Dawntrail hype to clarify not just that statement, but also what their vision for housing is going to be moving forward.
I’ve had a medium FC plot since 2019 and when the lottery first was introduced I was able to win a large. Thankfully square gave FC’s like 20 wards in the beginning. Then it took me a little over 2 years just to finally win a large for my private home which was also a medium. I mean it was a struggle but man when you win finally it’s like you hit the lotto irl.
I completely agree, it would be really cool if a small could select to have a large interior layout just for the space. Even if the slots to start are still the 200/200 (even though we're getting a slot increase per yoshi), because it would be a step in the right direction. The insides ARE instanced, just let us have it load an internal layout of our choice and then we'll use the slots we have to build.
I am really hoping for more info during the May media tour! Let's keep our fingers crossed!
Until they add instance housing ( not apartment ) i will not bother with it.
I dunno, I'm someone not struggling to find a house on my server and I see a whole lot of people rewarding SE month to month with their wallet despite this being such a "BIG" issue.
I find that behavior "broken" and "unfair" to their own values but to each their own. Totally fine if people want to wallow in misery while paying their monthly sub and rewarding SE.
I just got three personal larges on Bismarck and can confirm the ping is fine from NA at least. Come grab one of the open houses with a road to 80 alt if you're really that miserable while you wait for something to open on home base.
To get a house today is the best system ever, due to all got a fair shot and you do not need to camp for days at some spot trying to get one and or just being able to seel it right away as it was in the old old days to someone.
However I do agree to be able to expand the floor in eg. apartments and more item space is coming in DT.
At this point anyone that is willing to sub just to keep a house deserves whatever housing system they get. I have little sympathy for them.
While small does have the best item to space ratio, larges offer additional flexibility in design because of the much larger open spaces and the higher item limit. It really depends on what someone wants to accomplish with their house.
Broken? Yes.
Unfair? No. No one is being treated unfairly. Everyone has the option to transfer to a world where there are plots available if they want a house that badly.
I'm not someone struggling to find a house is my entire point. I had a Small, found out I didn't really use it to the point that it was demolished and I didn't even care. I was just slightly weirded out by the fact that I received no notification of it having been demoed. Once I decorated the house and garden, there was not much to do besides gardening and I didn't find that all too interesting, either.
There are plenty of free Smalls on Zodiark that I could grab at any point. Even in desirable locations (aka not the Goblet). I probably won't because the housing in this game is just not for me. We have an amazing FC house that has everything I need anyway.
That doesn't make it a fair system. Why should some people have a house just because they have been playing the game longer than other people who would also like a house? Why is the amount of Medium and Large houses several times smaller than the demand? They get dozens of bids every time, yet the Smalls sit there unwanted. There is zero reason for either of these situations besides "that's just how the game has always done it" and that just isn't good enough.
I'd like to see this for both houses and apartments.
Buy a plot of land/apartment, smallest size. Invest money/do quests/craft and/or gather to (slowly?) increase size, small -> medium -> large progression on house and yard separately, so you could have a large yard with a small house, if that's what you prefer, or a mansion with a small yard.
Similar progression for apartments, but probably have them smaller by default - or just make them into instanced houses and allow for gardening in them, and for FCs to use them as bases for workshops.
They should make apartments bigger. Also, the pillars along the walls are a little stifling, although I think this is a house problem as well. They could make a variety of apartment types like townhouses and penthouses, with exorbitant prices to match. Adding balconies would be very welcome, that just seems really nice to me. But I would be more than satisfied (currently) if they just added an additional room. Anything that could help flex a little more creativity, at least.
If you're really desperate for a house just make your own FC and buy one that way. The housing estate im on in Lich has at least 12 empty plots in my area and they've been empty for months.
