How would you react to your WoL being referred to with gender-neutral pronouns?
How would you react to your WoL being referred to with gender-neutral pronouns?
I wouldn’t be against the option because I support people who don’t go by the traditional he/she pronouns but my WOL is distinctly a male so I personally prefer keeping my pronouns as he/him
There would be another sundering
I'd rather not deal with American moral imperialism in my video games.
My warrior of light is female. She will be referred to as such.
I wouldn't like it just because it cuts corners.
GW2 started doing this when they previously referred to the main protag as he or her in voiced lines, but switched to they/them to avoid having to have the actors read the same lines twice depending on your character's pronoun.
If there was an option, that'd be fine, but for the sake of not setting a precedent for cutting corners, I'd prefer they keep it as is.
I'd be about as annoyed as people prefering they/them when someone uses what they think the other is presenting as rather than they/them.
Assuming this isn't a troll thread . . . .
A blanket change would not be well received. Most players I know have no issues with people wanting their pronouns to be what they want (or have any issues with devs putting options in the game to do so) but don't force us to adopt pronouns that we don't use ourselves as it's no different to how you feel about the current pronouns/gender settings.
I have no issues if the devs add the option to have pronouns set by the player (akin to how BG3 works) though that may take quite a bit of dev time to go through and change all current content (not sure if any VA cutscenes refer to our gender?) If so, they would also need to be re-done which I can't see happening personally from a business/development point of view.
The VA question is more Interesting in regards to German and French.
The difference here is, online, you have no idea what the person on the other side of the screen looks like, so using gender neutral language is the safest bet until shown otherwise.
When you can actually see the person, it is a different situation. You can guess someone's gender identity just by the way the looked (traditionally anyway), so using gender neutral pronouns, for most people, is just weird. It would be the same case here.
As others have pointed out, just reducing all voice lines to they/them just causes the same issue as just having he/him or she/her, just the other way around. You could appease more people if a third set was added for gender neutral (and giving the player a choice as to which one of the 3 they use, regardless of the sex of their character), however, how soon would it be before others come along and ask for their pronouns to be added?
To make it clear. I would have no issues with having an option for gender neutral for those that want it, as long as people realise there has to be a line drawn and you cannot get everyone's pronouns in the game.
Obviously it shouldn't be forced on people.
But there's nothing wrong with giving players the option to change it, if they want to.
I am male IRL but my character is not, random FC members call me she, the game calls me she, strangers in parties call me she. It never bothers me. Seems like a pointless change that would just make the annoying loud transphobes here more loud and annoying. Could make it like an option I guess.
It would be extremely jarring and obvious. While you *can* use "they" to refer to anyone of known, unknown, or ambiguous gender because that's what the word is there for, using it repeatedly is weird and unnatural sounding. Several games do this to save dev time or because their main character is purposely ambiguous, and it doesn't make it less unnatural there. The better ones simply avoid having many lines that refer to the main character, but that also gets awkward after several hours.
If it's an option, I don't mind. But my char is a "she", and I wouldn't like the neutrality to be forced on her.
Wouldn't mind the option, but wouldn't like it to be forced on me.
I would be against it. I am a gay man who is both male in the real world and in favour of playing men in video games. I expect my characters to be referred to as such and I have no interest in eroding away outright references to either men or women.
I don't think people would have cared if it started out that way. But given they've spent 10 years personalizing the pronouns to your character, to switch to they/them now would make them look cheap and lazy.
Go outside, touch grace.
Sounds like a waste of time and coding for something you can be referred as by the rest of the players, incurring absolutely no cost whatsoever.
Just do it like bob kelso and call all the male character Dave and females debby or slagathor if they want that.
I lean toward the latter since their RP profile comes up in Google and it was last edited back in 2019 and the OC has lesbian as their sexuality. Looking at the lodestone the character doesn't do much outside of RP by the looks of it. However, they only started posting again during the VA debacle after two years of inactivity.
As an option? Sure, why not.
Mandatory for everyone? This late into the game's life, it would be very jarring.
I probably wouldn't notice or care to be honest, it isn't something I pay any attention to. Most of the time my WoL seems to just be referred to as "my friend" "our champion" "hero" w/e else. Pretty sure the Scions don't even know her name.
They use your name plenty when it's not voiced. There's no way they could voice every single possibility for a player name. (And, considering some of the things people will name their characters, there's plenty of reason they wouldn't want to.)
I don't want american politics in my game so I will unsubscribe harder than ever.
The last time pronouns came up I was in favor of expanding the list and letting you pick regardless of gender, but forcing one set on everyone is something that would annoy me.
I would quit the game asap
