Nostalgia value has a lot to do with it. There's a lot of great music in XI though. I think Thanalans theme holds up pretty strongly against most of the starting zone themes.
I think my favorite is La Noscea. But have you heard the music for raid bosses? that stuff is freakin amazing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBf9H9pnF4Y
It gets me so pumped every time. =D
But if we're gonna recommend some musical taste: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMosUlU5Jg8 I would love to get into some epic Garlean Infantry battles with this type of song in the background.
NO WE CAN'T HAVE FFXI IN OUR FFXIV!!!!!
This is probably the best music to come from XI in awhile, and imo, Garuda's song completely trumps it.

Xiv is lacking in orchestra which is better than synth music ( my personal opinion ). What would be awesome is if they mixed orchestra into their new synthetic style music
Battle Themes are certainly not Mizuta's strong point. However, zone and scenario themes by Mizuta are easily amongst the best composed in video games.
Mizuta doing the zone music for 2.0. Uematsu doing the battle music, and both doing the scenario music.
Shame Uematsu is no longer a composer for the game anymore, though.
If by XI's "spirit", you mean the videogame-y, synthesizer-like quality to the music, then I honestly hope that doesn't make it over to XIV. With that said, I really don't want to rain on this parade, because all of you (OP included) are posting some excellent tracks. I'd definitely like more tracks like this, but using XIV's sound technology.
With that said, I think XIV has a great soundtrack, and it's only getting better. The composers (all of them!) are doing a terrific job, and I hope we hear more tracks in the future from each one. I'd also like to give a little shout-out to sound director Masayoshi Soken, who has done an excellent job ensuring that the new content has an inspired, cohesive soundtrack to go along with it. In my opinion, the man is a god!
FFXI' Original's music wasn't that good- but it got better and better with every expansion. I'm a fan of TOAU's music the most myself.
All of FFXIV's music is rock solid, though a few of the tracks have kind of a generic feel to them- Still well done though.
Will there be any music with FFXI's spirit in it?
I hope not because this is FFXIV.
We have Masayoshi Soken who composes the New Soundtrack (With his team), Nobuo Uematsu who composed the Original Soundtrack, and hopefully some other great Composers make some in the future!
I really like XIV's music, Orchestra or Synth music What matters most is If it fits into where it is being used, how do you say, If it has the "Harmony" with the situation that's going on. Well I don't know much about music, but that's just my opinion :D
if this is Masayoshi Sokens work (due to Wikipedia), i definetely hear some FFXI in it.

XI had far better Zone music, had a very...dream like quality to the soundtrack, very appropriate for an MMO in my opinion. I would say XIV's battle music stands on top, however
Also, much love to Kumi Tanioka. His other work is just as excellent:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJgj9Q6Hw6g
I would kill for a CC MMO is the ambient and dreamy atmosphere of the first game~
the adoulin theme isn't that great. you want a good XI song, Clash of Standards!! now that's my jam

Hmm.....if you can't tell that a lot of XIV's soundtrack is Synthesized then well..I guess you're just hating on XI's soundtrack for the sake of it as per usual of XIV community lol. By the way, Mizuta is a composer for XIV now too.
What? Did you only play FFXI to like..level 10 or something? lol. Mizuta's battle themes are actually more theme inspired than Nobuo's, even ones he collab'd on you can tell Mizuta is the main guy on it.

So while his field themes are amazing, his battle themes are actually a lot more fitting for their respective battles and locations compared to Nobuo's. Nobuo's FFIX's soundtrack is probably the only one I can honestly say where he's made a truly great fitting soundtrack.
Are they making an entire new sountrack for 2.0?
HOW COULD YOU FORGET THESE!? (So much nostalgia it hurts!!)
ROTZ Battle Theme #3
Used in COP
Also COP DON'T DENY THE EPIC FLUTE!!
I actually played XI up until the end of the first three storylines. I never really touched endgame at all, however.
I guess what I mean is, I didn't care for FFXI's battle music all too much. A lot of it sounds, more or less, the same (to me, at least). A few RotZ battle themes, the Kupo d'teat(sp) boss theme, and the ACP theme as well are really the only songs that stuck with me. And Tough Battle, I suppose.
I think Mizuta can do some fantastic battle music, as from what I've heard in XIII-2.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r12yof1g0o4
It retains his same style, but it has a much more exciting vibe going for it as well.
I still think that Mizuta's zone/scenario works have no change of being outdone anytime soon, I just don't care all too much for his FFXI battle themes.
The battle themes are fine in this game, especially things like the garuda theme, but the biggest problem with this games soundtrack aren't the works themselves, its the atmosphere they bring to the areas you are in. Listen to the pieces below from final fantasy XI and you will understand exactly what I mean.

Just listening to these pieces you can pretty much picture the areas that they represent, even if you have never played the game before. The ronfaure theme gives off a sort of medieval forest vibe, something that would be reminiscent of a robin hood tale, and the rolanberry fields theme is just sounds like it belongs in a peaceful meadow full of rolling hills. The Sanctuary of Zi'tah sounds like a desolate area thats been lost to time. These are just a few examples but you can pick out almost any piece from the ffxi ost and close your eyes and visualize an area similar to the one that it represents in ffxi even if you have never been there.
This is in extreme contrast with the ffxiv ost where if you were to listen to any of the pieces the average listener is either going to have trouble visualizing where the hell they belong or probably envision an area that is absolutely nothing like the area that it represents. That isn't to say the ffxiv ost is bad, its just incredibly out of place and doesn't add to the atmosphere of the area. Lets take thanalan for example, probably one of the best zone area themes in this game.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhHocGjORK8
Close your eyes and listen to this, its incredibly gentle, yet intense at the same time. In my mind it portrays something incredibly grand, something beautiful like watching the sunset from a cliff over the sea, and once the sun goes down fireflies start popping up all around you and its just incredibly serene in general, yet when you walk out of uldah and that theme starts playing what the hell do you see? Nothing, its a barren freaking wasteland outside of uldah. Granted, yeah there are cliffs over the sea, but thats such a small portion of the zone as a whole that its not something that is going to define it. The thanalan theme at best would have been best represented in la noscea, but only once the sun were to start going down, kind of like a night time thing.
Next we can move on to the La noscea theme.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R47oBAPVT84
the first instruments you hear from it are something you would predominately expect to hear if you were watching 2 people try to cross a desert. And even though its added to with a beautiful orchestra that crappy beat that starts off in the first half a second persists throughout the entirety of the piece. La noscea is predominately a bunch of wind blow cliffs by the sea, the main orchestra kind of represents that "sea" feeling but the fact that that beat is in the background throughout the entirety of the piece completely ruins the atmosphere of the area as a whole.
The problem aren't the pieces themselves, its the fact that they weren't made to cater the areas they are supposed to add depth to.
I agree that FFXI music is vastly superior to FFXIV but we need new FF tunes. La Noscea music is just bad.
I just want a battle theme like Ff 10's or 13's, Thanlans field music is better than everything in FF 11 Field music for me. I wish they would use the camp glory leve music for other things tho its so awesome. Castrum Nova trumps a lot of the stuff in XI as well.
Lol, I dunno man. Thanalan's a pretty theme and all, but it's... extremely out of place. The music that starts playing when you get out to like halatali and broken water is much more fitting. The music in the black shroud when you get a bit away from gridania is pretty good too, and so is the coerthas music.
The instanced dungeon music is god awful, and so is the la noscea battle music.
music placement really is kinda outta place. Limsa Lominsa Music is too grand constantly. Choco music is like HEY YOUR ON A CHOCOBO!!!! Freakin LOOK! CHOCOBO!
Just have to remember that music sets the tone , but with recent patches I'm sure they know already .
This thread is full of clashing opinions and nostalgia factor. Even the people trying to find logic behind the music are very opinionated.
I just need to HEAVILY disagree on this one. As soon as the very first notes hit my first reaction is "Faris?". No, sincerely, the very FIRST time i've heard this theme my first reaction was going "Wait, they took this out of FFV's pirate cave!" and-
Perhaps it's my pink-stained glasses but I really do think that this music gives perfectly off the pirate feel, even if not exactly the plains feel.
Three songs have stood out to me so far as having that Naoshi Mizuta (and hence FFXI) feel:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbIeM7p-ObE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1K9Uj6Qbgk
I think it just the music FFXIV launched with that is giving the heartaches lol
I was always reminded of XI with the goobue theme...
