Well, they've also been upgrading the game itself over the years. I mean, look at 7.0. It's slated as huge update.
Are you roleplay talking??
So why do they constantly making up excuses about limited data space? For example when asked for more glamour plates.
The reality is they are already pushing the outdated engine to its limits. Everytime they are asked about a feature its always "cant do, something something 1.0 code"
That's a flat out lie from Yoshi P. Most of the netcode we have right now is actually revamped in 2.0.
The real reason is because they want to minimize server costs and server overhead. It's pure business 101: cost-cutting.
This is a budget McDonald's online video game. Don't expect quality.
Servers are not so much the issue anymore, the main problem is cross server bandwidth and latency. The more goodies they add (clothes, customizations, dyes, etc.), the more bandwidth they need and as you can only slap so many fiber channel cards into a server, there is the true server limitations.
And all comes down to the engine being a hot mess. Either they are using the "server bandwith" as an excuse cause they cant find a way to add more customization without breaking the game, or the engine is so bad that adding more customization ddos' their own servers. Or, an that could be equally true, dont want to spend ressources on that cause people will eat up their excuses anyway. It shouldnt make a difference if there are 100 or 500 hairs because on the serverside the characterdata should just point to an ID and the client loads the hair with the ID. ANd for a database it doesnt matter if the hairfield says 100 or 325
Shinkuno: a new engine is a HUGE investment and will be horribly expensive and time consuming to port the game to. Its a logistical nightmare.
Vel thinks Mao should not worry overmuch, as there are improvements and upgrades on the way. Vel says Mao should just sit back, have fun, and let the SE devs do the driving.:)
Oh yes.
Vel also thinks Gaius is a silly rabbit, who posts way too often and makes little sense.
So there.

Vel thinks this is actually a wonderful idea, will do this more often just to make Gaius' day.Quote:
bro you literally write nonsense like this lmao
Vel wonders if this means Vel is getting on Gaius nerves? Vel is good at doings, not so good at understandings :)Quote:
pls go learn spiking neural networks before you ever say another word in your life
The game is constantly at the risk of breaking. The recent changes to wings being visible in combat is a good indication for this. Instance servers are barely functional.
Except they've also announced that FFXIV was approved for a major infrastructure update that will begin in 7.0 and take 3-4 years to complete.
What can't be done now may be possible when that's completed.
Another issue they have to consider is what player clients are capable of handling. Not everyone has a high end PC gaming machine. They can do all the upgrades in the world to their infrastructure and it doesn't mean squat if players aren't likewise upgrading their clients to handle the changes.
PC will have minimum/recommended system requirements updated for 7.0. They have promised PS4 support through at least 7.0 but have made no promises past that. I expect that means that the game will be seeing some really helpful QoL changes as soon as PS4 support is dropped. I know they're keeping an eye on how many players are moving from PS4 to PS5.
That's the hilarious part, people think this whole "major graphical update !!" will be anything more than adding a few details via adding items, and some shaders like graphics (that already have existed for years thanks to mods and the one program we dont talk about)
But hey, it only took them like 10 years to do what modders do right ? And they'll probably manage to mess it up too and it'll be such an underwhelming mess than people will stick to the program we dont talk about, hooray !
i find your lack of faith....disturbing.Quote:

The fact that the word "faith" is used at all in a capitalist economy where the corporation's incentive is to maximize its profits and not be the customer's friend...
That's what's disturbing.
Imagine unironically seeing placing FAITH in a CORPO as a good thing.
At this point I think gamers, and really just consumers in general, have only themselves to blame because most of them are THIS stupid and gullible!!!
Or maybe it's not such a bad thing since people are all getting a high from being such loyal paypigs
"Square can't do what modders have been doing for years" is such an asinine thing to me.
Imagine thinking that a mod, even just a reshader, which is completely client side, and only affects the stability of the software on a client side basis, has the same impact as a server side reshader, which again, is server side and actually gets recognized by the game and goes out to millions of people.
Am I defending Square and saying that it's okay if they don't have this? Nah, I'm a realist. There will probably be bugs and crashes upon release. And it'll be frustrating. That's the state of games nowadays, unfortunately. It really sucks. But I'm also not so silly as to think that just because a modder has been able to do it that it really is a simple task when it comes to implementing it server side and only a buffoon could mess it up.
You can't just copy and paste a client side mod into server side and have it work. So the notion that "modders have been doing it for years" literally holds no weight whatsoever.
Did you just unironically say shading is done serverside? My god no wonder Square gets away with all the shit, you guys are so technically illiterate. NOTHING on the graphic side has any impact on the server. No viera hats, no shading, no high res textures. All that has no affect on the server AT ALL. Stop the "Well akshually mods can only do it cause its client side"
???
Why would be server responsible for that? Do you just send raw frame + metadata, which for 1080p is ~8MB per single frame to the server, which does postprocessing and sends you improved 8MB frame??? With 60 frames, that's 480MB bandwith up and down per client, which is straight up impossible with even best customer-grade available internet connection, not speaking about the fact that you would be throttled by another parts of your PC unless you're playing on NASA PC. What the fuck are you talking about. This is not how it works. This is not how any of this works.

Half fitting real world analogy would be electric car without battery, which needs to be plugged 24/7 using extension cords that leads all the way to your house.
Shaders and the like even from SE's perspective wouldn't necessarily have impact on them at all from server-side. It would just be client-side rendering that has an impact.
That being said, yes it is an asinine thing to say, as shaders is just post-processing so it cannot fix or change vertex/polygon count on 3D models. So there are absolutely things that SE can do that shaders cannot do. That also said, it won't magically resolve every woe, and nor will it really eliminate the shader entirely, since they will like aim to resolve different things. At best shaders can only 'simulate' this.
But seeing as this game runs across multiple platforms it's borderline insane to make mockery of it considering 1 platform cannot do this in any capacity.
But anyone saying that the graphical update can and will only do everything that shaders already do is just... Naïve at best
I'd say it's already broken in most ways, Mao ^^
Game as a whole ? nah ? The Engine ? Yes and no, the engine is really just limping along on life support. But it will last until they try to push it over the edge and that hopefully wont happen.
99.9% of the time, when the question is "Why... ?!?"
the answer is "Money".
Don't worry when they've reached the limits you can expect them to just recycle all sorts of assets and mechanics for another 10 years. We're more likely to get a completely different MMO than an upgrade to FFXIV's engine.
