That's a flat out lie from Yoshi P. Most of the netcode we have right now is actually revamped in 2.0.
The real reason is because they want to minimize server costs and server overhead. It's pure business 101: cost-cutting.

Servers are not so much the issue anymore, the main problem is cross server bandwidth and latency. The more goodies they add (clothes, customizations, dyes, etc.), the more bandwidth they need and as you can only slap so many fiber channel cards into a server, there is the true server limitations.That's a flat out lie from Yoshi P.
