Would people play a 'Spellblade/Mystic Knight' themed DPS Job?

Something along the lines of the Mystic Knight from FF5 or Beatrix from FFIX.

A swordsman that imbues their weapons with elemental and non-elemental damage to apply elemental status effects, debuffs and deal damage with iconic Final Fantasy abilities like Climhazzard.

The Spellblade abilities themselves also increase damage based on Elemental weaknesses inflicted by other abilities.

1. Hitting an enemy with an ice imbue would cause an ice weakness.
2. Hitting that Ice Weakness with a Fire imbue would deal extra damage and apply a Water Weakness.
3. Hitting the Water Weakness with a Lightning ability would Shock the enemy and apply a DoT and make them weak to earth ect ect.

A simple combo that could be expanded apon with OGCD abilities to instantly apply certain weaknesses at the right time, to deal devastating elemental combo attacks.

I spent years hoping they would add Mystic Knight to the game. Or if not that, Rune Knight. One of the two.

We've heard a lot about the Corvosi Unyielding Blade, which seems to fit along these lines. You could use Meliadoul's outfit as inspiration for the Artifact set, especially if it used a Scouting base. The biggest difficulty would be finding a suitable weapon (that is ideally visually distinct), given how many variations of swords we have. I think the three possible variations would be dual wielding, a twinblade, or some sort of transforming weapon like a Fusion Sword or Switch Axe. And who knows, perhaps this is our one hope of seeing Runic in the game.

I'd expect a caster first, of course.

If they hadn't deliberately and consistently removed all the elemental damage/resistance mechanics that used to exist in FFXIV it would be more likely.
But as things are now? Not very likely.

• Thunder Blade - Melee weaponskill chain deals 1.0x damage but apply a DoT to the target. DoT stacks up to three times, maybe.
• Drain Blade - Melee weaponskills absorb some of the damage dealt as HP, but some use-limiting criteria needs to be set so this can't be kept up for more than one or two combos.

Then they would be melee DDs whose rotating elements have the MP bar going up and down in a way that feels very familiar to BLM players. And more powerful, build-up-to-these imbuements like (Burst/Flare/Flood) Blade might be Spells or Weaponskills on their own, imbuing the weapon and performing a finishing strike in one action. (Edit: Flare Blade could be a finisher that uses all MP under Fire Blade, expected to consume the last 10% left over after three weaponkill chains.)

I imagine you'd be able to get enough people interested in it. The trick is finding a good gear class for it and distinguishing it aesthetically and gameplay-wise from existing jobs (especially, DRK, NIN, SAM and RDM).

Best guess, though, its being a Mystic Knight could only carry it so far, and you'd likely have to instead incorporate those aspects into a related original job.

Take, for instance, a Scouting-class with dual scimitars (too many swords already, I know), a Staff, or a Bladestaff (perhaps with a blade on each side).

Actually, let's go with the last by way of example, and use it as the excuse for differentiating stabs (front blade), slices (back blade), and whirls (both strike), since that'd in turn give reason for a fun unique mechanic like enchanting the front and back blades separately.

Okay, so we have our silhouette and a core gimmick. But we'd still need to synergetic aesthetics, a place of origin, etc.

Let's say the job came from... Thavnair, as they've got quick elemental imbuements aplenty, along with good use of magical/artifact weapons, related seals and scripts, and would likely have reason enough to develop a martial art around that.

Okay, now, how does the Thavnairian aesthetic intersect with Scouting? More than likely light, probably open-chested tunics, loose pants, and/or wraps, etc. It's simultaneously direct but slightly ornate, slightly showy. And if we're to have a Mystic Knight but not make it a Maiming or Fending class, there'd have to be something foreclosing that possibility.

For instance, lets say that a second aspect of this Scouting "MSK" is that it's a master of distraction, opposite NIN's mastery of stealth, able to offer defensive support opposite NIN's offensive support. It has quick attacks, alternatingly flurries of stabs or whirls of sweeping strikes, has Ice, Fire, and Wind magic, with Lightning and Water being possible by combination (melting Ice for water, and creating imbalances between enemies' heat and then adding wind to create lightning)... Perhaps it's even able to leave an ice-dummy or an ally to lock a targeted mechanic to a particular baited position or to provide allies with a burst of speed via wind magic. Atop this, maybe it has specific wards that it can use to either suppress incoming magic damage or to allow for a deeper combo on an enemy (preventing elements from dissipating or combining for a time, allowing them to stack higher).

...From all that, maybe something like a... Dervish?

That's just one spitball way of routing to something likely able to be sufficiently fleshed out while playing on and amping up old MSK (MYS?)Mystic Knight aspects. But hopefully the example seemed sufficiently fun.

I wasn't advocating for that, or any other, acronym for Mystic Knight or Spellblade; it was just a quick shorthand to as not to use the full name in the last line and therefore make clear that that was NOT the name I was proposing for the final product, for those who'd skip most of the post.

Realistically they could just make everything deal magic damage and have the elements be the core of the job's gameplay identity. (As in, the elements would be enhancing your abilities. Whether it's raw potency, debuffing the enemy and making another element more powerful with said debuff, building towards a much stronger burst potential, etc)

They might. New jobs always get played at lot at release. The elemental resistances had been removed as was mentioned but making enemies weak to the next element you use could work. Basically it would boil down to: apply the appropriate debuff and then go in the phase.

This. Elemental Vulnerability/Resistance mechanics would be a mechanic available to everyone. If it's a mechanic within a single job's kit, it'd be no more reliant on any additional/special gamewide undermechanic than Ninjutsu is.

Well final fantasy 14 took out elemental weaknesses but could be stuff life fire puts burning dot, ice puts slow, lightning has chance to stun (obviously they would work in all cases but just ideas) however I'd give it a shot if it was a tank

I'm neutral to if we get such a job or not... but since my brother doesn't visit these forums I will speak for him. My brother is desperate for a "Spellslinger" job / class. Basically Red mage, but more of the focus on melee, and a short window for range / magic. It also for some reason has to be a sword preferably 1handed. As enhancement shaman from wow, Death Knights and or Paladins "is not the same". Oh and the magic has to be exclusively like elemental like arcane / fire / ice / lightning kinda of stuff.

What you described as wanting is just Red Mage/Ninja.

Yes. We currently don't have a job with a whip or a (blitz)ball or a chain etc. We DO already have 5(!) jobs with swords though (if you count gunblades). 3 of which are tanks. So there is only 1 tank that doesn't use a sword. It's clear that they don't focus on creativity.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with wow or not but i always thought 14 would be great with an enhancement style of job. a Magic melee fighter how does really heavy attacking. and from what read that you posted its pretty similar (if you look at the shamans shock spells they do DOT for fire, SLOW for ice) and in regards to what you said about water weakness with lightning ability there was a talent for shaman in bfa that left a puddle of lightning on the ground after you used thunder crash and i think something like that would be a cool interaction if you use the water weakness with shock so you have consistent AOE.

If you want a tank weapon, you could go with a big pillar.

Outside of the easy answer of "some people will probably play any new job outside of the extremely low chance that it's actually near-unplayable"...

I think the general concept behind a Spellblade/Mystic Knight, with infusing elements into a weapon, is neat and I'd be interested in seeing it explored. I agree that we have too many swords, and I think the one suggestion of "fire/ice and thunder but with a sword" is pretty boring because that's just Black Mage but as a melee.

The original idea of creating elemental weaknesses will probably not happen purely because the design of the game doesn't align with element weaknesses, but I can see those being things attached to the player rather than the enemy - when you're Ice-imbued, using a Fire move swaps you to an Water-imbue, and so on. It seems like it could be an interesting system - I think it might be a bit more involved than the current job design seems to aim for, but having different paths you could potentially go down for different effects (even if there's a proper optimal rotation for 99% of scenarios) - or even just generally the aesthetic/job fantasy of flowing from element to element with different effects/job mechanics in each element phase - would be fun.

I don't mind lil clipping, I can't think of any game that doesn't perfect on an online setting where there's zero just want it to look cool and have decent animations

I'd rather have one class invented by the player character, like going from summoner to exclusively using permanent trances as stances as the class mechanic. Could be a Ranged/magic/melee DPS where Ifrit is melee, Garuda is ranged and Ramuh is magic, or something like that.
With all the options, it could conceivably be a class that is anything and everything at the same time, with different kits based on trance so you'd only need one new job for an expansion since it could fulfil all aspects of the trinity. Too bad SE doesn't support thinking on company time, so put some nostalgia bait in instead and rake in the cash.

Anyway, i'm gonna call it now: the next job uses a whip, swordwhip or both.
