Please reinstate gifting mogstore items like mounts and emotes

Now that we've passed the first Christmas since they implemented the new gifting system, I'm still thoroughly disappointed that we can't gift items like mounts, minions, and emotes. Had an instance where an FC mate wanted to buy another member the drink tea emote for Christmas, couldn't do it. I wanted to buy a friend a mount for Christmas, couldn't do it.

I get why it was done, to reduce RMT. And I get why the restrictions are in place, to prevent you from wasting non-refundable real life money on an item that the recipient might already have. But minions and mounts are public information based on the Lodestone, so they can at LEAST remove the restrictions there because you can check before you buy. Or there's this handy little thing called "communication" where you can, you know, talk to the recipient before you buy them something. Especially seeing as it forces you to be friends with people for at least 3 days before it allows you to gift them anything. Now in order to gift them anything that's restricted, you have to do the thing they were trying to prevent: real money trade. As in, give them the money to buy the thing themselves. Which defeats the purpose of a gift system.

It's just mega disappointing. In theory I like the direct-to-mogmail system better than the code system, it's just too narrowly applied for it to be of any use. Like, come on Square, I want to give you my money. Make it easier for me to do that and you'll make more of it.

That's the PR reason. What more likely is that there were too many chargebacks from people who fell for the 300 million gil scam that the payment processors gave a stern talking to SE.

Please read my whole post. I said that I understand that the change to the system as a whole (from codes to direct-to-mogmail) was made to combat RMT fraud, but the reason why these items in particular are restricted are "officially" because they don't want you to overpay.

This makes a depressing amount of sense. But it still doesn't explain why they can't implement a system that just doesn't allow you to purchase for them because they already own the item in question, especially for mounts and minions, when there's already a public system in place on the lodestone that tells you what a player does and doesn't have.

Serious question. Do you enjoy playing FF14?

If so, then stop complaining about the mogstore restrictions. Or maybe SE should just remove the restrictions and see how far things go. We can find out how long it'll take for the fraudulent charges leading to all those chargebacks to eventually take its toll on credit card companies, forcing them to stop providing service to the game.

I've wondered with this, if the exact problem isn't "whether people can check what their friend owns" but the consequences of not checking and buying something that they do own.

Can things like purchased mount whistles and emote books be discarded? If not, then I suspect that a duplicate would become a permanent dead weight in your inventory, unable to be either used or discarded.

And the same question for the job/story boosts. Does anyone know what happens if you try to use one when you're already past that point in the story? I do know that (having used a skip after playing partway through ARR on a character) it resets map completion, and probably general completion status, for dungeons you have already done. Maybe that's all that happens if you use a book that won't actually benefit you.

My reading of that statement is that fraudulent activity was the reason for stopping the old system, while avoiding doubling-up is the (official stated) reason for what can and can't be purchased under the new system that has replaced the problematic one.

So for story skips, cause I derped and bought a second Stormblood Boost for the same character, it just doesn't let you use it or discard it. It stops you from using saying 'you've already completed this story' and stays there taking up space. Which makes me confused as to why you can still buy job and story boosts if the stance is to prevent double purchasing of items a person may already have.

Codes were nice especially if you were gifting someone with alts. They could at least use the code on an alt if they already had the item. I don't think we'll be getting codes back but expanding what you can gift would be nice.

Normally I'm all for criticizing SE and their decisions with the game(so call me a hypocrite for this if you want), but this issue reaches out beyond the game itself.

You can criticize any other aspect of the game, but there's a valid reason for the current mogstore restrictions. The people who want them lifted have my sympathies, but they need to just accept it for what it is at the moment.

The difference is purchasing a gift for someone else who might already have it versus purchasing something for yourself. When doing the latter (such as the aforementioned boost), you only have yourself to blame if you bought something you can't use. With the former, it gets much more complicated, especially around gift-giving times when multiple people could potentially be buying the same gift for the same person.

The announcement specifically and explicitly points out that the reason involves the recipient being someone else. It's not only because of the "one use" thing.

Just do what I do give your friends your card info but make sure it is one with a low limit. You should have a low limit card anyways that you use solely for online stuff just incase your online accounts ever get compromised.

If I am willing to get someone I gift means o trust them and if they burn said bridge fine it is a minor inconvenience lesson learned.

They made the changes to mitigate a problem. No other solutions have been implemented as of yet. I can't see why they'd just reverse this policy, exposing them to fraudulent chargebacks.

Wasn't their a poster on either 4chan or w/e that would use a throw away account to buy a bunch if gifts via the gift feature then would charge them back the throw away account would get banned but his main kept the items.

Charge backs are a bitch.

Is it planned to bring back the gifting option? A friend has birthday and I'd really like to give her a clothing set gift code.
There is no use in blocking it. RMT has a lot of options which are way more faster than via mogry-station. It's just a dumb decision that doesn't solve the rmt problem.

Could always gift someone an item that's in-game.

Especially not when the banking industry has apparently doubled down on the idea that companies all need to redo their business models to reduce chargebacks, even though that's basically an "attack the victim" mindset (it's not SE who's trying to rip people off, it's the people that steal account details on a virtually daily basis in this day and age of data breaches).

One almost wonders if the party pooper banks would simply demand that modern e-commerce be done away with altogether, or restricted to prepaid top-up balances that you can only add to at a bank branch or via cards bought at a physical store (which would be a Final Days level cataclysm for XIV, unless SE were able to rapidly roll out Crysta cards, otherwise every non-Steam player who does not have a console license won't be able to reup their sub), if that's what it took to mitigate chargeback rates (which don't seem to be showing any sign of slackening, data breaches sure aren't).

At the least, though, it seems like the only way forward in the long run for SE is going to be having to force everyone to go through wallets for everything, either Crysta or Steam/PSN, and phase out the ability to use a credit card directly. But then there's the matter of people buying and charging back Crysta. How can they deal with that, unless again they force direct-vendor PC accounts to either move to console or start over from scratch with a Steam service account?

Then there's the uncomfortable thought that SE might be specifically in the soup because of being an Asian company not based in China (because of practically all the big payment processors at this point, outside of the PRC's, apparently being USA based companies, which more or less means that countries like Japan have increasingly less control of their own economies due to this practical dependence on American financial services) - perhaps paranoid, but you don't really see Blizzard struggling with this, do you?
